Ion-Specific Ice Recrystallization Provides A Facile Approach For The Fabrication Of Porous Materials, Shuwang Wu, Chongqin Zhu, Zhiyuan He, Han Xue, Qingrui Fan, Yanlin Song, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Jianjun Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Ice recrystallization is of great importance to both fundamental research and practical applications, however understanding and controlling ice recrystallization processes remains challenging. Here, we report the discovery of an ion-specific effect on ice recrystallization. By simply changing the initial type and concentration of ions in an aqueous solution, the size of ice grains after recrystallization can be tuned from 27.4±4.1 to 277.5±30.9 mm. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the ability of the ion to be incorporated into the ice phase plays a key role in the ultimate size of the ice grains after recrystallization. Moreover, by using recrystallized ice crystals …

Kinetic Study Of Conjugated Polymer Packing And Agglomeration, Skye R. Travis May 2017

Kinetic Study Of Conjugated Polymer Packing And Agglomeration, Skye R. Travis

Honors Theses

Although organic electronic materials are flexible, cheap to fabricate, and molecularly tunable, their performance has generally been less efficient than that of their inorganic counterparts. Chemical doping has been attempted as a method to increase the efficiency of organic materials. During this process, an organic material, typically a conjugated polymer, is exposed to an oxidant/reductant, called a dopant. Electron transfer between host polymer and dopant molecules increases the charge carrier density in the doped host material, making it a more efficient conductor. The effects of doping using 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) on low molecular weight poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (LMW P3HT) in varying ratios of …

Homogeneous Ligand-Centered Hydrogen Evolution And Hydrogen Oxidation : Exploiting Redox Non-Innocence To Drive Catalysis., Andrew Z. Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogen is a promising carbon-free fuel / energy carrier and is an essential building block for many industrial and agricultural processes. Rising energy demands have ignited interest in the development of carbon-free and carbon neutral energy sources. In this context, hydrogen is an attractive candidate—being energy-dense, carbon-free—and easily accessible through a two-electron reduction of water. Accordingly, many electrochemical homogeneous catalyst systems have been studied, with a focus on understanding the mechanism of hydrogen evolution proceeding through metal-hydride intermediates. However, there has been a renaissance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst design, with many groups implicating ligand redox non-innocence as a …

Ab Initio And Semi-Empirical Calculations Of Cyanoligated Rhodium Dimer Complexs, Yazeed Asiri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Molecular modeling, using both ab initio and semi-empirical methods has been undertaken for a series of dirhodium complexes in order to improve the understanding of the nature of the chemical bonding in this class of homogeneous catalysts. These complexes, with carboxylamidate and carboxylate ligands, are extremely functional metal catalysts used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The X-ray crystallography shows anomalies in the bond angles that have potential impact on understanding the catalysis. To resolve these issues, minimum energy structures of several examples (e.g. Rh2(NHCOCH3)4, Rh2(NHCOCH3)4NC, Rh …

In Situ Electron Microscopy Of Plasmon-Mediated Nanocrystal Synthesis, Peter Sutter, Ying Li, Christos Argyropoulos, Eli A. Sutter

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Chemical processes driven by nonthermal energy (e.g., visible light) are attractive for future approaches to energy conversion, synthesis, photocatalysis, and so forth. The growth of anisotropic metal nanostructures mediated by excitation of a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a prototype example of such a reaction. Important aspects, notably the growth mechanism and a possible role of plasmonic “hot spots” within the metal nanostructures, remain poorly understood. Here, we use in situ electron microscopy to stimulate and image the plasmon-mediated growth of triangular Ag nanoprisms in solution. The quantification of the time-dependent evolution of the lateral size and thickness of …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on the development of shape-controlled synthesis of Cu NM, Cu-based bimetallic and trimetallic nanostructures, and their electrocatalytic properties for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Copper nanomaterials (Cu NM) with specific surface facets can tailor their catalytic activity. Understanding reagents responsible for Cu NM growth is important for morphology-controlled synthesis of the nanostructures. This research studies the halide influence on Cu NM growth and morphology in an oil-based synthesis. The morphology of the Cu NM varies with the halide type (i.e., Cl-, Br-, I-), and the halide concentration. Additionally, the type of Cu precursor also influenced the morphology of …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The determination of diffusion coefficients is of fundamental importance to the understanding of electrochemistry and sensors. Developing a method by which diffusion coefficients of Red/ox active analytes can be determined quickly and elegantly, would be a great advancement over presently accepted methods. This dissertation reports the reviving electrochemical time of flight (ETOF), and developing a method that allows for empirical determination of diffusion coefficients from a single measurement. ETOF is a generate and detect experiment where the time an electrochemically generated species takes to transit a known distance is measured and related to the diffusion coefficient of the species. The …

Reconstruction Of Distributions Of Nanoparticles Or Electroactive Nano-Components In Electrochemical Arrays Based On Chronoamperometric Data, Alexander Oleinick, Oleksii Sliusarenko, Irina Svir, Christian Amatore

Journal of Electrochemistry

The main scope of this work was to elaborate and test a simple mathematical and numerical procedure for reconstructing the probability density distributions f(ρ) characterizing the distribution of electroactive or electrocatalytic nano-components present or deposited on the electrochemically-inert surface of a planar conductor based on the time-dependent chronoamperometric responses of the corresponding electrochemical array. The mathematical and numerical validity of the procedure was established for three types of arrays (one periodical, two involving random dispersions) involving near-spherical nano-components dispersed on a flat surface. Indeed, altogether, these three types represent most 2D-experimental electrochemical nano-arrays used for analytical or electrocatalytic purposes. This …

Impact Of Nafion Loading And Anion Adsorption On The Synthesis Of Pt Monolayer Core-Shell Catalysts, Lijun Yang, Dustin Banham, Elod Gyenge, Siyu Ye

Journal of Electrochemistry

Carbon supported palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were used as a model core material for the synthesis of platinum (Pt) monolayer core-shell catalysts using rotating disk electrode method and a copper (Cu) under potential deposition technique. The impact of Nafion on the synthesis process was revealed by electrochemical testing with various Nafion contents. The existence of Nafion influenced the Cu under potential deposition, galvanic replacement and eventually the oxygen reduction reaction activity of the core-shell catalyst. However, as long as the Nafion content was less than 5 wt% in the test film, adding Nafion could help to bind catalyst onto the surface …

Comparison Of Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity Of Pt-Alloy Nanocubes, Yongan Tang, Lin Dai, Shouzhong Zou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Alloying Pt with the first row non-noble transition metals has been demonstrated to increase the catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is the cathode reaction of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and metal-air batteries. However, how much the ORR activity improvement comes from the alloying elements remains controversial. In this paper, the nanocubes of PtMn, PtFe, PtCo, and PtNi with the similar size and composition were prepared and their ORR activities were explored, in order to investigate the effects of alloying elements on the catalytic activity. The use of cubic shape particles minimizes the contribution to …

Electrografting Of Mono-N-Boc-Ethylenediamine From An Acetonitrile/Aqueous Nahco3 Mixture, Hamzah Hisham, Denuault Guy, Bartlett Philip, Pinczewska Aleksandra, Kilburn Jeremy

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrografting of primary amines to carbon electrodes is now widely employed for electrode modification. Using a mixture of acetonitrile and 0.1 mol⋅L-1 aqueous sodium hydrogen carborate (NaHCO3) in the ratio of 4:1, the efficiency for coupling of mono-N-Boc-ethylenediamine (EDA-Boc) on the surface of glassy carbon was significantly improved as compared with that obtained using acetonitrile alone. In the presence of NaHCO3 the initial current determined in the cyclic voltammogram became higher, and the layer of attached amine was formed more rapidly, accordingly, the electrode was passivated more rapidly. The resulting film of EDA-Boc was shown …

Once a solution of bromophenol blue is placed in a concentrated basic solution, the color fades from a blue/violet color to clear solution with a pH of 4.6 or greater. The rate law of the reaction is analyzed through the use of a small footprint visible-near-infrared spectrometer (Vis-NIR) with a diode array detector. An absorbance wavelength of 590 nm as a function of time was collected using Ocean Optics OceanView software. The results contained in the data collection file are exported to a spreadsheet for further …

Oxidation Of Substituted Catechols At The Air-Water Interface: Production Of Carboxylic Acids, Quinones, And Polyphenols, Elizabeth A. Pillar, Marcelo I. Guzman Apr 2017

Oxidation Of Substituted Catechols At The Air-Water Interface: Production Of Carboxylic Acids, Quinones, And Polyphenols, Elizabeth A. Pillar, Marcelo I. Guzman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic activities contribute benzene, toluene, and anisole to the environment, which in the atmosphere are converted into the respective phenols, cresols, and methoxyphenols by fast gas-phase reaction with hydroxyl radicals (HO(•)). Further processing of the latter species by HO(•) decreases their vapor pressure as a second hydroxyl group is incorporated to accelerate their oxidative aging at interfaces and in aqueous particles. This work shows how catechol, pyrogallol, 3-methylcatechol, 4-methylcatechol, and 3-methoxycatechol (all proxies for oxygenated aromatics derived from benzene, toluene, and anisole) react at the air-water interface with increasing O3(g) during τc ≈ 1 μs contact time and contrasts their …

Regiospecific P-Bromination Of Activated Aromatic Systems – Greener Approach, Elnaz Jalali

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The halogenated derivatives of heterocyclic compounds (haloarenes) are highly utilized in many fields of chemistry, including drug discovery, medicinal, and material chemistry. There are a variety of ways to functionalize an aromatic system and introduce halogen substituent into the ring. However, electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) has been the focus of growing attention, particularly for electronrich substrates.

Electrophilic aromatic bromination protocols are one of the most important electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. However, preparation of bromoarenes classically recommends the use of highly oxidative agents along with utilizing various metal catalysts in a halogenated solvent. The corrosive and toxic nature of these reagents …

Tio2/Pdms Buoyant Photocatalyst For Water Remediation And Cu‑Rbs Organic/Inorganic Hybrid For Thermoelectric Applications, John R. Bertram

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Two novel materials have been developed: TiO2/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) beads as buoyant photocatalyst materials for water remediation, and copper rhodamine‑B silane (Cu‑RBS) as an n ‑type organic/inorganic hybrid for thermoelectric applications. The approach to incorporate TiO2 into low‑density PDMS beads addresses many of the challenges traditionally encountered when creating buoyant photocatalysts, an area which is crucial for wide‑spread remediation of water resources, including natural bodies of water. The performance and reusability of the buoyant photocatalyst materials, demonstrated by using methylene blue as a model degradation target, is strong enough for environmental application. The use of a kinetic model and the introduction …

Theoretical Study Of Ozone Forming Recombination Reaction And Anomalous Isotope Effect Associated With It, Alexander Teplukhin

Dissertations (1934 -)

The ozone forming recombination reaction stands out among many chemical processes that take place in the atmosphere. This reaction is responsible for the reconstruction of ozone layer, which protects life on Earth from harmful ultra-violate radiation and is a source of so-called anomalous isotope effect in ozone. The reaction was intensively studied, but at a very basic level. There were only couple of papers where the recombination rate coefficient was computed and found to roughly agree with the experimental data. In this dissertation, the recombination process in ozone is approached using new and efficient method, which includes several modern techniques. …

On The Structure And Properties Of S-Nitrosated Cysteine Models: A Computational Study, Dmitry Khomyakov Apr 2017

On The Structure And Properties Of S-Nitrosated Cysteine Models: A Computational Study, Dmitry Khomyakov

Dissertations (1934 -)

S-Nitrosation of cysteine (Cys) residues, a covalent modification of its S atom by NO group, is a major post-translational modification of proteins. Despite the importance of S-nitrosoproteins in numerous physiological processes, lability of the S-nitrosothiol (-SNO) group hinders the research progress. In this work, computational chemistry methods were applied to S-nitrosated cysteine (CysNO) models to gain a deeper insight into its structure and properties. First, we obtained the most accurate at the moment computational estimation of the molecular structure and properties of CH3SNO model molecule using Feller-Peterson-Dixon (FPD) ab initio protocol. The S–N bond length in cis- CH3SNO is calculated …

Computational Modeling Of S-Thiolation Reaction: Toward Discovering The Enzymatic Mechanisms Of Endogenous Hno Formation, Elena Ivanova Apr 2017

Computational Modeling Of S-Thiolation Reaction: Toward Discovering The Enzymatic Mechanisms Of Endogenous Hno Formation, Elena Ivanova

Dissertations (1934 -)

S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs) have long been proposed as potential sources of the elusive endogenous nitroxyl (HNO) via S-thiolation reaction with thiols. It is however not clear how S-thiolation can compete with the trans-S-nitrosation pathway commonly observed in vitro. Based on the insights into the highly unusual, antagonistic chemical nature of RSNO molecules, we hypothesize that, while difficult in vitro, S-thiolation could easily lend itself to enzymatic catalysis. To explore this possibility, we adopted a bottom-up computational approach that aims to identify possible catalytic mechanisms able to steer the RSNO + thiol reaction toward HNO production. Inspired by recent discovery of small …

Reactivity Of Ketyl And Acetyl Radicals From Direct Solar Actinic Photolysis Of Aqueous Pyruvic Acid, Alexis J. Eugene, Marcelo I. Guzman

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The variable composition of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) contributes to the large uncertainty for predicting radiative forcing. A better understanding of the reaction mechanisms leading to aerosol formation such as for the photochemical reaction of aqueous pyruvic acid (PA) at λ ≥ 305 nm can contribute to constrain these uncertainties. Herein, the photochemistry of aqueous PA (5-300 mM) continuously sparged with air is re-examined in the laboratory under comparable irradiance at 38° N at noon on a summer day. Several analytical methods are employed to monitor the time series of the reaction, including (1) the derivatization of carbonyl (C═O) functional …
