Antibacterial Activity Of Conjugated Electrolytes, Thomas S. Corbitt Jun 2011

Antibacterial Activity Of Conjugated Electrolytes, Thomas S. Corbitt

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A series of water soluble, cationic, anionic and zwitterionic conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with main chains based on an arylene ethynylene repeat unit structure with tetraalkylammonium and/or alkylsulfonate side groups were found to exhibit significant antibacterial activity. A number of these complexes also showed pronounced light-induced modulation of their effectiveness, with either biocidal enhancement or suppression, depending on such properties as singlet oxygen sensitization potential and lipophilicity. These collected studies examine the biocidal activity of the CPEs, as determined by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) and Flow Cytometry, correlating this activity with the photophysical properties of the polymers. We demonstrate biocidal …

Maxwell's Equations, Part Ii, David W. Ball Jun 2011

Maxwell's Equations, Part Ii, David W. Ball

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This is the second part of a multi-part production on Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism. The ultimate goal is a definitive explanation of these four equations; readers will be left to judge how definitive it is. A note: for certain reasons, figures are being numbered sequentially throughout this series, which is why the first figure in this column is numbered 8. I hope this does not cause confusion. Another note: this is going to get a bit mathematical. It can’t be helped: models of the physical universe, like Newton’s second law F = ma, are based in math. So are Maxwell’s …

Electrochemistry Of Technetium Analogues Rhenium And Molybdenum In Room Temperature Ionic Liquid, Pauline Nancy Serrano Jun 2011

Electrochemistry Of Technetium Analogues Rhenium And Molybdenum In Room Temperature Ionic Liquid, Pauline Nancy Serrano

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Rhenium was used as an analog for Technetium to study the electrochemical redox properties because the two elements share the same stable oxidation states in aqueous solutions. However, Tc-99 is radioactive and is not readily available for experimentation purposes. Molybdenum is also of interest because when Mo-99 is irradiated, the decay products are Tc-99m and Tc-99. Approximately 30% Tc-99m is eluted from the Mo columns for radiopharmaceutical use with the remaining Mo-99 source decaying to Tc-99 which is discarded as radioactive hospital waste. Currently there are no viable procedures for the reclamation of the radioactive Tc-99 from either fission streams …

Effect Of Pore Size On Pseudo-Capacitive Performance Of Nio In The Mixed Electrolyte Of Koh And Hexacyanoferrate, Wen Wu, Meng-Yan Hou, Dan-Dan Zhou, Yong-Yao Xia

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, five kinds of NiO samples with different pore size distributions were synthesized .The electrochemical capacitance of the samples were characterized in 3 mol/L KOH solution with and without hexacyanoferrate addition. Electrochemical test results indicated the NiO sample with an optimum pore size of about 15 nm shows high Coulombic efficiency of the N4(NiO) electrode as the redox reaction of hexacyanoferrate ions would be limited in the pore, thus prevent ion diffusion into the bulk electrolyte solution .

The Flip-Flop Behavior Of Acetonitrile At Au Electrode Surface Investigated By Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy, Zhi Huang, Xin Tang, Gang-Hua Deng, En-Cai Zhou, Hong-Fei Wang, Yuan Guo

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical interface between liquid acetonitrile and polycrystal gold electrode is investigated by in situ infrared visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG-VS). The structure of acetonitrile adsorbed at polycrystal gold electrode surface is studied as a function of electrode potential. The SFG spectra of CH3 group indicate acetonitrile orients in response to the electrode potential. The SFG signal of CH3 group turns lower as the electrode potential changes from -700mV to 300mV, and vanishes around the 300mV(pzc), then becomes a negative signal above 500mV, which indicates that the orientation is predominately with the CH3 group toward the …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

IR-UV double resonance spectroscopy has been used to characterize hindered internal rotor states (n(K) = 0(0), 1(1), and 1(0)) of the CN-Ne complex in its ground electronic state with various degrees of CN stretch (nu(CN)) excitation. Rotationally resolved infrared overtone spectra of the CN-Ne complex exhibit perturbations arising from Coriolis coupling between the closely spaced hindered rotor states (1(1) and 1(0)) with two quanta of CN stretch (nu(CN) = 2). A deperturbation analysis is used to obtain accurate rotational constants and associated average CN center-of-mass to Ne separation distances as well as the coupling strength. The energetic ordering and spacings …

Short intense laser pulses of visible and infrared light can dramatically accelerate crystal nucleation from transparent solutions; previous studies invoke mechanisms that are only applicable for nucleation of ordered phases or high dielectric phases. However, we show that similar laser pulses induce CO2bubblenucleation in carbonated water. Additionally, in water that is cosupersaturated with argon and glycine, argon bubbles escaping from the water can induce crystal nucleation without a laser. Our findings suggest a possible link between laser-induced nucleation of bubbles and crystals.
