Study On The New Technique Of Cu Micro-Plating Based On Ceramics, Zhi-Jun Gu, Xiong-Chao Zhao, Qi-Long Guo, Yan-Ping Hong, Qun-Shan Deng, Ren-Huan Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

By combing the computer processing system (including the design of the line and the pattern, the choice of the scanning area and the treatment of the activation) with the electroless-plating technology, this article provides a new approach for the micro-plating based on the ceramics. The copper film based on ceramics with good properties can be obtained under the mild operating conditions. The line resolution is 35 μm and the wiring speed is 50 mm/s. The results had also showed that the quality of the copper plating is closely related to the roughness of the ceramic substrates.

The Mechanism Of The Improvement On Cycling Performance And Thermal Stability Of Lini0.8Co0.2O2 By Ti-Doping, Han-San Liu, Jie Li, Zheng-Liang Gong, Zhong-Ru Zhang, Yong Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Improved cycling performance and enhanced thermal stability were observed for Ti-doped LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 cathode materials. The mechanism of these positive effects was investigated in this work. The improved cycling performance of Ti-doped cathodes is ascribed to the suppression of phase transitions and lattice changes during cycling, and the decrease of interfacial reaction activity between the cathode and electrolyte. The enhanced thermal stability of Ti-doped cathodes is attributed to the suppression of thermal decomposition reaction of delithiated cathode material, which will produce heat and oxygen gas as the cause of electrolyte decomposition and combustion reaction.

Preparation And Electrochemical Property Of Aao Nano-Channels Filled With Nio, Chi Gu, Jun-Mei Yan, Yong Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The AAO template with nano-channels was synthesized and filled with transient metal-oxide NiO by sol-gel method, and their electrochemical properties were primarily studied. The results showed that the porous nano-channels were well defined with the diameter about 50nm. The nano-structured NiO was filled into the template's nano-channels successfully. Cyclic voltammetry studies show that the NiO in AAO template has good cycle stability. It was suggested that the AAO-metal-oxides composites could be used as novel anode materials for Lithium ion battery.

Preparation Of Poly (Bromophenol Blue) Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode And Its Electrocatalytic Activity, Wei Chen, Hong-Bin Luo, Xin-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

A film of poly (bromophenol blue) was formed on a glassy carbon electrode by using cyclic voltammetry. A stable film could be obtained with a potential range from -1.0 V to +1.8 V (vs.Ag/AgCl). The experimental results showed that the poly (bromophenol blue) modified glassy carbon electrode could catalyse the oxidation of ascorbic acid. It decreased the oxidation potential by about 270mV but increased the peak current. Meanwhile, this electrode showed a good linear current response for the ascorbic acid range from 2.5 to 250 (g/mL).

Planar-To-Tubular Structural Transition In Boron Clusters: B20 As The Embryo Of Single-Walled Boron Nanotubes, Boggavarapu Kiran, Satya S. Bulusu, Hua-Jin Zhai, Soohaeng Yoo, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang Jan 2005

Planar-To-Tubular Structural Transition In Boron Clusters: B20 As The Embryo Of Single-Walled Boron Nanotubes, Boggavarapu Kiran, Satya S. Bulusu, Hua-Jin Zhai, Soohaeng Yoo, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Experimental and computational simulations revealed that boron clusters, which favor planar (2D) structures up to 18 atoms, prefer 3D structures beginning at 20 atoms. Using global optimization methods, we found that the B20 neutral cluster has a double-ring tubular structure with a diameter of 5.2 Å. For the B20- anion, the tubular structure is shown to be isoenergetic to 2D structures, which were observed and confirmed by photoelectron spectroscopy. The 2D-to-3D structural transition observed at B20, reminiscent of the ring-to-fullerene transition at C20 in carbon clusters, suggests it may be considered as the embryo …

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix: Quaterly Report October-December 2004, Spencer M. Steinberg

Separations Campaign (TRP)

We have conducted a large number of experiments to determine the possible reaction of iodate with sphagnum peat moss. These experiments indicate that the natural organic material reacts with iodate resulting in the formation of organically bound iodine and/or iodide in solution.

In the last quarter, we have conducted a number of experiments at various pHs and several temperatures (70oC, 60oC and 40oC). The reaction of iodate with peat follows pseudo first-order kinetics, although the reaction rate does appear to decrease significantly with reaction time. As noted in a previous report organically bound iodine appears to go through a maximum …

Temperature And Ph Dependence Of The Cyclization Of Creatine: A Study Via Mass Spectrometry, Brian J. Diamond Jan 2005

Temperature And Ph Dependence Of The Cyclization Of Creatine: A Study Via Mass Spectrometry, Brian J. Diamond

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The creatine to creatinine cyclization is of significant biological importance, providing energy for muscle cells and indicating proper renal function. From a chemical perspective, the rate at which creatine cyclizes to form creatinine has interested researchers since the late 1920s, but the cyclization is poorly understood both energetically and mechanistically. Mass spectroscopy was used to determine the rate of creatine cyclization as a function of temperature and pH. Using these values, the energetic parameters, activation energy and Arrhenius factor, were determined as a function of pH to better understand this reaction and ultimately determine the mechanistic process for this reaction. …

Yba2cu3o7 Electro-Magneto-Optic Effects In Ba L2,3 X-Ray Absorption Near Tc, Juana Vivó Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The onset of electro magneto-optic effects, observed at the Ba L2,3 edges synchrotron X-ray absorption by a YBa2Cu3O7 single crystal, 10 K above the transition temperature to superconductivity, Tc ~ 92 K is used to identify the role played by the Ba donor layer in the transition to superconductivity in the CuO2 layers. Negative permeability leads to Faraday rotation of the transmitted beam below T = 112 to 56 K for the 22 μm thick single crystal (c-axis orientation of 8π/18 relative to εX-rays) and sharp changes in the density of empty final states lead to zero transmitted radiation in …

Predicted Properties Of Microhollow Cathode Discharges In Xenon, J. P. Boeuf, L. C. Pitchford, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A fluid model has been developed and used to help clarify the physical mechanisms occurring in microhollow cathode discharges (MHCD). Calculated current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and gas temperatures in xenon at 100 Torr are presented. Consistent with previous experimental results in similar conditions, we find a voltage maximum in the I-V characteristic. We show that this structure reflects a transition between a low-current, abnormal discharge localized inside the cylindrical hollow cathode to a higher-current, normal glow discharge sustained by electron emission from the outer surface of the cathode. This transition, due to the geometry of …

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg, Gary Cerefice, David W. Emerson Jan 2005

Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg, Gary Cerefice, David W. Emerson

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of nuclear waste. Iodine-129, a long-lived fission product formed by both commercial nuclear power generation and nuclear weapons production, is released when reprocessing nuclear fuel. Since iodine can be concentrated in the human thyroid, any uncontrolled release of iodine may result in an increased rate of thyroid cancer in the exposed population. For this reason, recovery of iodine is important for implementing any nuclear transmutation strategy.

The stability of the association of iodine with FCC and NOM products are studied. Product …

Development, Fabrication And Study Of Fullerene-Containing Carbon Material (Fcc) For Immobilization Of Iodine: Final Report 2005, Michael Savopulo, Boris E. Burakov

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Immobilization of highly radioactive and long-lived isotope of 129I, which is a fission product in spent nuclear fuel, requires development of new durable host-materials.

Iodine is a very volatile chemical element, and even its chemically strong compounds such as AgI and CuI are not stable under ultraviolet irradiation or oxidizing conditions. Therefore, development of host materials for iodine immobilization is based on unusual approach – the search and testing of new compounds which were not studied before in respect of iodine sorption and strong fixation.

Although FCC material demonstrated high loading capacity to iodine sorption it is necessary to …

Evaluation Of Fluorapatite As A Waste-Form Material, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers, Dale L. Perry Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Fluorapatite As A Waste-Form Material, Dennis W. Lindle, Oliver Hemmers, Dale L. Perry

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Argonne National Laboratory has proposed a new extraction procedure to handle TRISO-coated fuels, the Fluoride Extraction Process, or FLEX. The FLEX process is designed to separate the uranium in the fuel from the actinides and most fission products by taking advantage of the unique properties of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). In the FLEX process, the used TRISO fuel is reacted with zirconium fluoride salt, forming UF6 and the fluoride salts of the actinides and fission products. At process temperatures, the UF6 volatizes into a gas, and is released from the molten salt mixture. This leaves behind the …

Development Of Fluorapatite As A Waste Form: Final Report #280204-1, Boris E. Burakov Jan 2005

Development Of Fluorapatite As A Waste Form: Final Report #280204-1, Boris E. Burakov

Separations Campaign (TRP)

In the framework of Agreement #280204 (first year) it was necessary to review methods of apatite synthesis; identify optimal procedure of precursor preparation; obtain and study first fluorapatite samples. Although, some apatite-based ceramics were successfully synthesized using co-precipitated precursors and sintering method, there are still a lot of uncertainties related to optimal apatite doping with different radionuclides and non-radioactive elements. It is necessary to provide complete incorporation of waste elements into apatite crystalline structure avoiding formation of separate phases of radionuclides. Also, it is important to note that real waste streams might contain radionuclides with essentially different chemical features such …

Anion And Cation-Yield Spectroscopy Of Core-Excited Sf6, Maria Novella Piancastelli, Wayne C. Stolte, Renaud Guillemin, A. Wolska, M. M. Sant'anna, Dennis W. Lindle

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We report an extensive study on total and partial-ion-yield spectroscopy around both the S 2p and F 1s thresholds in SF6. All positive and negative single-ion channels have been measured. Below the F 1s threshold we detect a large variation in relative intensity of the resonant structures according to the specific channel monitored, indicating selective fragmentation. Above threshold, at variance with previous cases described by us, we detect high-intensity structures related to shape resonances not only in the cation channels but also for the anions. We discuss the applicability and limits of a model we …
