Energy-Efficient Computational Chemistry: Comparison Of X86 And Arm Systems, Kristopher Keipert, Gaurav Mitra, Vaibhav Sunriyal, Sarom S. Leang, Masha Sosonkina, Alistair P. Rendell, Mark S. Gordon

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The computational efficiency and energy-to-solution of several applications using the GAMESS quantum chemistry suite of codes is evaluated for 32-bit and 64-bit ARM-based computers, and compared to an x86 machine. The x86 system completes all benchmark computations more quickly than either ARM system and is the best choice to minimize time to solution. The ARM64 and ARM32 computational performances are similar to each other for Hartree-Fock and density functional theory energy calculations. However, for memory-intensive second-order perturbation theory energy and gradient computations the lower ARM32 read/write memory bandwidth results in computation times as much as 86% longer than on the …

Fused-Molecular Systems For Organic Light Emitting Diodes, Avinash Jami Oct 2015

Fused-Molecular Systems For Organic Light Emitting Diodes, Avinash Jami

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are electronic devices made by sandwitching organic light emissive materials between two electrodes. When voltage is applied across the two conductors, a bright light is generated. The color of the emitting light depends on the band gap of the semiconducting material. The work described here focuses on designing and synthesizing narrow band gap molecular systems derived from fused-arene derivatives for producing organic blue light emitting diodes. Three molecular systems derived from anthracene, pyrene, and carbazole, were designed and synthesized. Two molecular systems of anthracen-9-ylmethyl anthracene-9- carboxylate and pyren-1-ylmethyl 4-bromobenzoate were synthesized through Steglich esterification reaction …

Gas-Phase Electron Diffraction From Laser-Aligned Molecules, Jie Yang, Martin Centurion Aug 2015

Gas-Phase Electron Diffraction From Laser-Aligned Molecules, Jie Yang, Martin Centurion

Martin Centurion Publications

Electron diffraction is a valuable tool to capture structural information from molecules in the gas phase. However, the information contained in the diffraction patterns is limited due to the random orientation of the molecules. Additional structural information can be retrieved if the molecules are aligned. Molecules can be impulsively aligned with femtosecond laser pulses, producing a transient alignment. The alignment persists only for a time on the order of a picosecond, so a pulsed electron gun is needed to record the diffraction patterns. In this manuscript, we describe the alignment process and show the changes in the diffraction pattern as …

Plotting The Van Der Waals Fluid In Pseudo-3d And The Maxwell Construction, Carl W. David Jul 2015

Plotting The Van Der Waals Fluid In Pseudo-3d And The Maxwell Construction, Carl W. David

Chemistry Education Materials

The van der Waals (from his thesis of 1873) equation is a cubic in the molar volume. Plotting the equation in pseudo 3 dimensions is quite simple to do, but including tie lines is quite difficult. Employing the solutions to the cubic van der Waals equation, the tie lines are readily available and can be easily incorporated into the aforementioned 3D plots.

A Lego® Brewster Angle Microscope For Quantitative Monolayer Film Analysis, Nicholas Benz Jul 2015

A Lego® Brewster Angle Microscope For Quantitative Monolayer Film Analysis, Nicholas Benz

Physics

In order to study single-molecule thick films and their phase behavior we built a Brewster Angle Microscope (BAM). BAM’s are inherently expensive due to their accuracy and precision. We built a fully functional BAM using Lego® Mindstorm® kits for the fraction of the price of a commercial BAM. And by utilizing the 10µm patented Lego® tolerance, comparable accuracy was attained. The BAM was mounted to a Langmuir-trough and will be used for laboratory experiments for optics and physical chemistry along with research on lung surfactant and on liquid crystals.

Titanium Trisulfide Monolayer: Theoretical Prediction Of A New Direct-Gap Semiconductor With High And Anisotropic Carrier Mobility, Jun Dai, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

A new two-dimensional (2D) layered material, namely, titanium trisulfide (TiS3) monolayer, is predicted to possess novel electronic properties. Ab initio calculations show that the perfect TiS3 monolayer is a direct-gap semiconductor with a bandgap of 1.02 eV, close to that of bulk silicon, and with high carrier mobility. More remarkably, the in-plane electron mobility of the 2D TiS3 is highly anisotropic, amounting to about 10,000 cm2 V−1 s−1 in the b direction, which is higher than that of the MoS2 monolayer, whereas the hole mobility is about two orders of magnitude lower. …

Femtosecond x-ray laser pulses are used to probe the CO oxidation reaction on Ru initiated by an optical laser pulse. On a timescale of a few hundred femtoseconds, the optical laser pulse excites motions of CO and O on the surface allowing the reactants to collide and, with a transient close to a picosecond (ps), new electronic states appear in the O K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum. Density functional theory calculations indicate that these result from changes in the adsorption site and bond-formation between CO and O with a distribution of OC—O bond lengths close to the transition state (TS). After …

Wigner High-Electron-Correlation Regime Of Non-Uniform Density Systems: A Quantal-Density-Functional-Theory Study, Douglas Mortimer Achan Feb 2015

Wigner High-Electron-Correlation Regime Of Non-Uniform Density Systems: A Quantal-Density-Functional-Theory Study, Douglas Mortimer Achan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Wigner regime of a system of electrons in an external field is characterized by a low electron density and a high electron-interaction energy relative to the kinetic energy. The low correlation regime is in turn described by a high electron density and an electron-interaction energy smaller than the kinetic energy. The Wigner regime of a nonuniform electron density system is investigated via quantal density functional theory (QDFT). Within QDFT, the contributions of electron correlations due to the Pauli exclusion principle, Coulomb repulsion, and correlation-kinetic effects are separately delineated and explicitly defined. The nonuniform electron density system studied is that …

New Methods For Measuring Transient Interactions Between Proteins And Curved Membranes, Philip P. Cheney Jan 2015

New Methods For Measuring Transient Interactions Between Proteins And Curved Membranes, Philip P. Cheney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Variations in the physical deformation of the plasma membrane play a significant role in the sorting and behavior of the proteins that occupy it. Determining the interplay between membrane curvature and protein behavior required the development and thorough characterization of a model plasma membrane with well defined and localized regions of curvature. This model system consists of a fluid lipid bilayer that is supported by a dye-loaded polystyrene nanoparticle patterned glass substrate. As the physical deformation of the supported lipid bilayer is essential to our understanding of the behavior of the protein occupying the bilayer, extensive characterization of the structure …

Note: Improved Line Strengths Of Rovibrational And Rotational Transitions Within The X3Σ⁻ Ground State Of Nh, James S.A. Brooke, Peter F. Bernath, Colin M. Western

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Recently, a line list including positions and transition strengths was published for the NH X3Σ− rovibrational and rotational transitions. The calculation of the transition strengths requires a conversion of transition matrix elements from Hund’s case (b) to (a). The method of this conversion has recently been improved during other work on the OH X2Π rovibrational transitions, by removing an approximation that was present previously. The adjusted method has been applied to the NH line list, resulting in more accurate transition strengths. An updated line list is presented that contains all possible transitions with v′ and …

Molecular Interactions With Ice: Molecular Embedding, Adsorption, Detection, And Release, K D. Gibson, Grant G. Langlois, Wenxin Li, Daniel Killelea, S J. Sibener

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The interaction of atomic and molecular species with water and ice is of fundamental importance for chemistry. In a previous series of publications, we demonstrated that translational energy activates the embedding of Xe and Kr atoms in the near surface region of ice surfaces. In this paper, we show that inert molecular species may be absorbed in a similar fashion. We also revisit Xe embedding, and further probe the nature of the absorption into the selvedge. CF4 molecules with high translational energies (≥3 eV) were observed to embed in amorphous solid water. Just as with Xe, the initial adsorption rate is …

Does A Plastron Improve Heat Transfer?, Madani A. Khan, Jeffrey Alston, Andrew Guenthner

STAR Program Research Presentations

Superamphiphobic surfaces strongly repel both water and oils. In this work, aluminum coupons are processed by sanding with various grit of sand paper to impart microscale roughness. Subsequent submersion of the aluminum substrate in boiling water grows nanoscale grass-like structures. The oxide layer of Al is slightly soluble in water. During a fast diffusion/equilibrium, Al2O3 nanograss grows on the surface. A low energy coating is then deposited on the surface. The micro and nanoscale features create re-entrant structures that trap air enabling contact liquid to be in a Cassie-Baxter state. Superamphiphobicity of the samples were confirmed by …

Isotropic Oscillator Under A Magnetic And Spatially Varying Electric Field, David L. Frost Mr., Frank Hagelberg Aug 2014

Isotropic Oscillator Under A Magnetic And Spatially Varying Electric Field, David L. Frost Mr., Frank Hagelberg

Undergraduate Honors Theses

We investigate the energy levels of a particle confined in the isotropic oscillator potential with a magnetic and spatially varying electric field. Here we are able to exactly solve the Schrodinger equation, using matrix methods, for the first excited states. To this end we find that the spatial gradient of the electric field acts as a magnetic field in certain circumstances. Here we present the changes in the energy levels as functions of the electric field, and other parameters.

Hydration Of The Sulfuric Acid−Methylamine Complex And Implications For Aerosol Formation, Danielle J. Bustos, Berhane Temelso, George C. Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

The binary H2SO4−H2O nucleation is one of the most important pathways by which aerosols form in the atmosphere, and the presence of ternary species like amines increases aerosol formation rates. In this study, we focus on the hydration of a ternary system of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), methylamine (NH2CH3), and up to six waters to evaluate its implications for aerosol formation. By combining molecular dynamics (MD) sampling with high-level ab initio calculations, we determine the thermodynamics of forming H2SO4(NH2CH3)(H …

Dipole Bound Excited States Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Containing Nitrogen And Their Relation To The Interstellar Medium, Mallory L. Theis Apr 2014

Dipole Bound Excited States Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Containing Nitrogen And Their Relation To The Interstellar Medium, Mallory L. Theis

Honors College Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most abundant type of molecule present in the interstellar medium (ISM). It has been hypothesized that nitrogen replacement within a ring is likely for PAHs present in the ISM. Additionally, electrons, protons, and hydrogen atoms are readily added to or removed from PAHs creating a truly diverse set of chemistries in various interstellar regions. The presence of a nitrogen within a PAH (called a PANH herein) that is additionally dehydrogenated leads to a neutral radical with a large dipole moment. It has recently been shown through the use of high-level quantum chemical computations for …

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a quark-gluon plasma which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect. The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this Letter, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with …

Investigation Of Major Intermolecular Interactions In 7,8-Dihydrobenzo(K)Phenanthridin-6(5h)-One Crystal Using Quantum Calculations And Crystallographic Visualization Programs, Zhiwei Liao, Tonglei Li, Mingtao Zhang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Currently, tablets and capsules are the most common ways of delivering drugs. The active pharmaceutical ingredients and excipients used to make those tablets and capsules are in their crystalline form generally. However, a single molecule can form multiple different crystal structures because of different packing arrangements of the molecules. These different crystal structures have identical chemical composition but different properties such as solubility, density, stability, etc. This phenomenon is called polymorphism. Occurrence of polymorphism could be a disaster for both patients and pharmaceutical companies, as the drug could lose its efficacy due to changes in properties. Studying intermolecular interactions in …

On The Origin Of Mode- And Bond-Selectivity In Vibrationally Mediated Reactions On Surfaces, Daniel Killelea, Arthur L. Utz Oct 2013

On The Origin Of Mode- And Bond-Selectivity In Vibrationally Mediated Reactions On Surfaces, Daniel Killelea, Arthur L. Utz

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The experimental observations of vibrational mode- and bond-selective chemistry at the gas–surface interface indicate that energy redistribution within the reaction complex is not statistical on the timescale of reaction. Such behavior is a key prerequisite for efforts to use selective vibrational excitation to control chemistry at the technologically important gas–surface interface. This paper outlines a framework for understanding the origin of non-statistical reactivity on surfaces. The model focuses on the kinetic competition between intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) within the reaction complex, which in the long-time limit leads to statistical behavior, and quenching, scattering, or desorption processes that restrict the …

Why Do Molecules Echo Atomic Periodicity?, Ray Hefferlin, Jonathan Sackett, Jeremy Tatum May 2013

Why Do Molecules Echo Atomic Periodicity?, Ray Hefferlin, Jonathan Sackett, Jeremy Tatum

Franck–Condon factors are investigated for sequences of free

main-group diatomic molecules. Theory-based Condon loci

(parabolas) and Morse-potential loci are plotted on Deslandres

tables to verify if they, indeed, follow the largest Franck–Condon

factors. Then, the inclination angles of the Condon loci

are determined. Thus, entire band systems are quantified by

one variable, the angle. For all available isoelectronic sequences,

this angle increases from a central minimum toward

magic-number molecular boundaries. The theory for the Condon

locus gives the angle in terms of the ratio of the upperstate

to the lower-state force constants. It is concluded that

the periodicity is caused …

Fundamental Studies And Applications Of Strong Field Ionization, Lu Yan Jan 2013

Fundamental Studies And Applications Of Strong Field Ionization, Lu Yan

Wayne State University Dissertations

In an intense laser field, atoms and molecules experience tunneling ionization directly to the continuum. We used this method to study several aspects and applications of strong field ionization (SFI) in atoms and molecules. One study used SFI to probe the photofragments produced by photodissociation using DC sliced imaging. The photodissociation mechanism of two polyatomic molecules (sulfur dioxide and nitromethane) were investigated. In a second study, we show the strong field ionization rate depends on the sign of the magnetic number distribution. We detect the signal of sequential double ionization of argon dications by a pump-probe method to investigate the …
