Journal of Electrochemistry
In this work, the concrete samples polluted by chloride ion were electrochemically treated using galvanostatic technique, and the distributions of chloride ion concentration and pH value in the polluted concretes were in-situ monitored by embedding a combined pH/Cl- probe during the electrochemical chloride removal. The corrosion behaviors of reinforcing steel in the concrete were simultaneously studied by using linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques (EIS). The micro environment of the concrete and corrosion rate of steel were explored during the electrochemical chloride removal. It was indicated that the Cl- concentration in the concrete pore solution decreased with …

Detection Of Glucosamine Hydrochloride By Ion Chromatography With Integrated Pulsed Amperometric Detector, Yan-Qun Fan, Qing-Yang Chen, Jin-Mei Xia, Jian-Zhong Xu, Xun Xu, Chen Xu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Factors (integral potential, concentration of NaOH and flow rate) affecting detection of Glucosamine hydrochloride by ion chromatography with integrated pulsed amperometric detector were studied. As the integral potential increased, the detection signal first increased and then decreased, while the detection background and noise increased directly. The suitable integral potential should be 0.1 V. With the concentration of NaOH increased, the retention time descended sharply, while the integral area increased quickly before they are coming back into balance. The number of theoretical plates increased firstly and then decreased. The optimum concentration of NaOH was 50 mmol·L-1. As the flow …

Preparation Of A New Laccase Biosensor Based On Bimetallic Pt/Au Particles And Chitosan/Silica Sol-Gel Hybrid Films For Determination Of Catechol, Tong-Fang Lou, Jian-Ying Qu, Huan-Huan Xing, Xue-Ping Du, Ying Dong
Journal of Electrochemistry
A novel laccase (Lac) biosensor was fabricated successfully by means of entrapping Lac into bimetallic Pt/Au particles and chitosan/silica (CS-SiO2) sol-gel hybrid films, and then applied to determine catechol (CC) concentration. The experiment results showed that the biosensor can electrocatalyze the reduction of CC, and the peak current increased linearly with the concentration of CC in the range of 8×10-7 ~ 1×10-4 mol·L-1 (r = 0.9993) with a detection limit of 7.9×10-8 mol·L-1 by cyclic voltammetric response. The biosensor exhibited good sensitivity, stability and reproducibility, with a broad linear range for potential applications.

Aromatic organic molecules which have unpaired electrons play an important role in a variety of applications in the fields of organic synthesis, organic magnets, and biological activity of organic compounds. Several studies have been published on σ- type carbon-centered mono- and biradicals. Reactive intermediates with three formally unpaired electrons are known as triradicals. They can be defined as species with three electrons distributed in three degenerate or nearly degenerate orbitals, based on Salem's definition of biradicals from the electronic structure point of view. Very little is known about the reactivity of carbon-centered σ,σ,σ- triradicals due to the complexity of studying …

Design And Development Of A Novel Glucose Biosensor Based On The Ferrocene-Functionalized Fe3O4 Nanoparticles/Carbon Nanotubes/Chitosan Nanocomposite Film Modified Electrode, Hua-Ping Peng, Dai-Jun Zha, Wei Chen, Ai-Lin Liu, Xin-Hua Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
A novel platform for the fabrication of glucose biosensor was successfully constructed by entrapping glucose oxidase (GOD) in a ferrocene monocarboxylic acid-aminated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles conjugate (FMC-AFNPs)/chitosan (CS)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposite. The formation of FMC-AFNPs could effectively prevent the leakage of ferrocene and retain its electrochemical activity. This GOD/FMC-AFNPs/CS/MWNTs matrix provided a biocompatible microenvironment for retaining the native activity of the immobilized GOD. Moreover, the presence of MWNTs enhanced the charge-transport properties of the composite and facilitated electron transfer between the GOD and the electrode for the electrocatalysis of glucose. Under the optimal conditions the designed …

Spontaneous Formation Of One-Dimensional Hydrogen Gas Hydrate In Carbon Nanotubes, Wenhui Zhao, Lu Wang, Jaeil Bai, Joseph S. Francisco, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
We present molecular dynamics simulation evidence of spontaneous formation of quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) hydrogen gas hydrates within single-walled carbon nanotubes (SW-CNTs) of nanometer-sized diameter (1−1.3 nm) near ambient temperature. Contrary to conventional 3D gas hydrates in which the guest molecules are typically contained in individual and isolated cages in the host lattice, the guest H2 molecules in the Q1D gas hydrates are contained within a 1D nanochannel in which the H2 molecules form a molecule wire. In particular, we show that in the (15,0) zigzag SW-CNT, the hexagonal H2 hydrate tends to form, with one H2 molecule …

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
Photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations are used to investigate the structures and chemical bonding of the B25 − cluster. Global minimum searches reveal a dense potential energy landscape with 13 quasi-planar structures within 10 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(d) level of theory. Three quasi-planar isomers (I, II, and III) are lowest in energy and nearly degenerate at the CCSD(T) level of theory, with II and III being 0.8 and 0.9 kcal/mol higher, respectively, whereas at two density functional levels of theory isomer III is the lowest in energy (8.4 kcal/mol more stable than I at PBE0/6-311+G(2df) level). Comparison with …

Ferroelectric Hexagonal And Rhombic Monolayer Ice Phases, Wen-Hui Zhao, Jaeil Bai, Lan-Feng Yuan, Jinlong Yang, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
Two new phases of water, the mid-density hexagonal monolayer ice and the high-density flat rhombic monolayer ice, are observed in our molecular dynamics simulations of monolayer water confined between two smooth hydrophobic walls. These are in addition to the two monolayer ices reported previously, namely, the low-density 4∙82 monolayer ice and the high-density puckered rhombic monolayer ice (HD-pRMI). Stabilities of the structures are confirmed by ab initio computation. Importantly, both new phases and the HD-pRMI are predicted to be ferroelectric. An in-plane external electric field can further stabilize these ferroelectric monolayer ices.

We have performed a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers MX2/MoS2 (M = Mo, Cr, W, Fe, V; X = S, Se). For M = Mo, Cr, W; X = S, Se, all heterobilayers show semiconducting characteristics with an indirect bandgap with the exception of the WSe2/MoS2 heterobilayer which retains the directbandgap character of the constituent monolayer. For M = Fe, V; X = S, Se, the MX2/MoS2 heterobilayers exhibit metallic characters. Particular attention of this study has been focused on engineering the bandgap …

We perform a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic properties of van der Waals (vdW) trilayers via intercalating a twodimensional (2D) monolayer (ML = BN, MoSe2, WS2, orWSe2) between a MoS2 bilayer to form various MoS2/ML/MoS2 sandwich trilayers. We find that the BN monolayer is themost effective sheet to decouple the interlayer vdW coupling of the MoS2 bilayer, and the resulting sandwich trilayer can recover the electronic structures of the MoS2 monolayer, particularly the direct-gap character. Further study of the MoS2/BN superlattices confirms the effectiveness of …

Although CO2 and SiO2 both belong to group-IV oxides, they exhibit remarkably different bonding characteristics and phase behavior at ambient conditions. At room temperature, CO2 is a gas, whereas SiO2 is a covalent solid with rich polymorphs. A recent successful synthesis of the silicon-carbonate solid from the reaction between CO2 and SiO2 under high pressure [M. Santoro et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 108, 7689 (2011)] has resolved a long-standing puzzle regarding whether a SixC1−xO2 compound between CO2 and SiO2 exists in nature. Nevertheless, the detailed …

Surface Complexation Of Monosubstituted Organoarsenicals On Hematite: Atr-Ftir Investigations, Md Abdus Sabur
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Little is known about the surface chemistry of organoarsenic compounds with iron-containing materials commonly found in geosorbents and arsenic removal technologies. In this thesis, these organoarsenicals include aliphatic and aromatic arsenicals that historically have been used as herbicides, pesticides and in the poultry feed industry, respectively. Attenuated total internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been used to study the surface interactions of organoarsenicals at the molecular level under various environmentally-relevant conditions. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters extracted from these molecular level experiments provide trends that are not observed in any published bulk experiments. Apparent initial rates of adsorption and desorption …

Phosphate Esters, Thiophosphate Esters And Metal Thiophosphates As Lubricant Additives, David W. Johnson, John E. Hils
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Phosphate esters, thiophosphate esters and metal thiophosphates have been used as lubricant additives for over 50 years. While their use has been extensive, a detailed knowledge of how they work has been a much more recent development. In this paper, the use of phosphate esters and thiophosphate esters as anti-wear or extreme pressure additives is reviewed with an emphasis on their mechanism of action. The review includes the use of alkyl phosphates, triaryl phosphates and metal containing thiophosphate esters. The mechanisms of these materials interacting with a range of iron and steel based bearing material are examined.

Utilization of sunlight requires solar capture, light-to-energy conversion and storage. One effective way to store energy is to convert it into chemical energy by fuel-forming reactions, such as water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen. Ruthenium complexes are among few molecular-defined catalysts capable of water splitting. Insight into the mechanism of their action will help to design future robust and economically feasible catalysts for light-to-energy conversion. Mechanistic insights about the design of such catalysts can be acquired through spectroscopic analysis of short-lived intermediates of catalytic water oxidation. Development of time-resolved approaches through stopped flow UV-Vis Spectroscopy to follow the catalysis of …

Halides are incorporated into aerosol sea spray, where they start the catalytic destruction of ozone (O3) over the oceans and affect the global troposphere. Two intriguing environmental problems undergoing continuous research are (1) to understand how reactive gas phase molecular halogens are directly produced from inorganic halides exposed to O3 and (2) to constrain the environmental factors that control this interfacial process. This paper presents a laboratory study of the reaction of O3 at variable iodide (I–) concentration (0.010–100 μM) for solutions aerosolized at 25 °C, which reveal remarkable differences in the reaction intermediates …

The present report describes the X-ray structural and theoretical studies of some new pinacolboronate esters, and it also outlines the use of the target structures in Suzuki coupling reactions to produce new aromatic or heteroaromatic esters and amides. X-ray structural analysis of the studied compounds revealed that the pinacolborane ring's position with respect to the benzene ring varies, depending on the particular environment. An ortho-positioned carboxylic ester (methyl ester) causes a nearly perpendicular orientation of the pinacolborane unit with respect to the benzene ring, whereas an ortho-positioned amide (N,N-dimethylamide) causes the pinacolborane unit to orient itself nearly coplanar. A plausible …

Several subsurface water plumes are found at the Hanford U.S. DOE site. These plumes contain many different types of hazardous components including radioactive iodate (IO3-) and iodide (I-), which may have deleterious health effects. To selectively uptake IO3- and I-, inorganic layered double hydroxide (LDH) compounds were synthesized and tested. LDHs are mixed transition metal hydroxides that contain positively charged layers that undergo anion exchange. When LDHs are submerged in the plume water, they can selectively uptake IO3- and I- and remove them from the plume. Raman spectroscopy …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
New method for the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and Fourier transform mass spectrometry (MALDI-FTMS) analysis of low molecular weight polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) was developed and then applied to the characterization of commercially available chewing gum. The optimization of MALDI analysis of PVAc was achieved by investigating the influence of sample preparation variables such as the choice of solvent and choice of matrix-analyte ratio. It was demonstrated that the use of ethyl acetate as a solvent and 2,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid as a matrix yielded the highest signal intensity for the pure polymer sample. The application of TOF technique did not …

One way to improve fuel efficiency in today’s jet aircraft engines is to create an environment for higher operating temperatures and speeds. New and improved lubricants and bearing materials must be developed to remain stable in these elevated operating temperatures. Three lubricants, with varying amounts of tricresyl phosphate added as an anti-wear/extreme pressure additive were tested on two different stainless steels at varying temperatures ranging from 300 °C to 350 °C in vacuum. Significant decomposition of the lubricant base-stocks and the phosphate ester additive did occur in most of the trials resulting in the formation of carboxylic acids and phenols. …
