Achieving Warranted Acceptance Of Biotechnologies, Emily Grayek, Baruch Fischhoff

Level 3

The U.S. has faced long-standing shortages of generic drugs, causing negative health effects and spikes in drug costs. To address these shortages, investments in critical technologies and policies to support their adoption will be needed. The success of these technologies and policies depends on public acceptance. We studied public acceptance using the mental model approach, which identifies gaps in understanding that can be addressed with communications. We began with semi-structured interviews with experts in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Based on these interviews, we developed and conducted surveys of the general public, physicians, and pharmacists. Similar strategies could be applied to improve communications …

Quality Reborn, Anders Vinther

Level 3

It is time for Quality leaders to not only fulfill the traditional role of ensuring cGMP compliance within the company but also take the Quality profession to the level of business leadership like Deming did in Japan after World War II. FDA has recently stated that they have low confidence in quality management maturity of the pharmaceutical industry.

For quality leaders to also become good business leaders we must educate them in ways that are different from what we currently do. The education should be in the 6 areas

  • Visibly Demonstrating Responsibility of Quality
  • Risk-Informed Decision Making and Communication
  • Engaging …

Force Field Development Of Β-Lactam Class Antibiotics, Trevor Heinzmann Feb 2020

Force Field Development Of Β-Lactam Class Antibiotics, Trevor Heinzmann

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a computational chemistry technique used to observe how a molecular system behaves as time passes. MD is based on solving Newton’s equations of motion. This requires the use of force fields to describe the potential energy function of each different molecule type in molecular system. In order to develop a force field, charges, bonds, angles, and dihedrals must be parameterized to fit quantum mechanics (QM) data. By basing the force field on QM data, MD simulations have higher accuracy while still using the low computational cost of molecular mechanics. This project focuses on developing well-fit …

The Effects Of Cannabidiol And Delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Concentration On Breast Cancer Cells, Dorothy Agyemang

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are phytocannabinoids that have a potential impact on cancer treatments. Studies have shown that certain cannabinoids cause cancer cells to die, but only with the right concentration, which has not been well documented. The purpose of this study is to determine the exact concentration of CBD and THC needed to kill MCF-7 breast cancer cells. In this experiment, the initial treatment group will be treated with CBD or THC at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 micromolar. These concentrations were arbitrarily chosen because there is not an established baseline. Cell metabolic activity will …

Progress Toward Phidianidine Analogues Containing A 1,2,3-Triazole Ring, David Laws Iii, Dillon King, Bryan H. Wakefield

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Phidianidines are a class of compound that has been extracted from the sea mollusk Phidianis militaris. These compounds have been shown to exhibit a variety of useful properties such as antihistamine effects, anti-cancer activity, agonism of the µ-opioid receptor and neuroprotection. The biological activities are thought to be caused by the 1,2,4- oxadiazole ring found within the molecule. The goal of this project is to synthesize analogues of phidianidine that contain a 1,2,3-triazole instead of the 1,2,4 oxadiazole ring using a method that will allow for other regions of the molecule to be changed. This will help to elucidate …

Synthesis Of A Small Molecule Nitrosocysteine Inhibitor To Reduce The Activity Of Caspase-1, Catherine A. Shamblen, Caitlin E. Karver Jul 2016

Synthesis Of A Small Molecule Nitrosocysteine Inhibitor To Reduce The Activity Of Caspase-1, Catherine A. Shamblen, Caitlin E. Karver

DePaul Discoveries

Caspase-1 is an enzyme that is overactive in autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases cleaving pro-interleukin-1β to the cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β), which leads to inflammatory symptoms. The inhibition of caspase-1 will cause a decrease in the concentration of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), resulting in the reduction of inflammatory symptoms. Recent research has revealed that the appending of a nitric oxide (NO) or nitroxyl (HNO) donating group to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) reduced, or avoided, the side effects caused by currently available treatments. A small molecule based on a known caspase-1 inhibitor with a nitrosocysteine appended on was synthesized to look at the effect of …

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

Gallic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring plant phenol known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In this work, we probed the molecular self-assembly of GA for the development of GA based nanocomposites for potential device fabrications and enhanced antioxidant applications. We found that the formation of GA nanostructures was pH dependent. Further, we examined the interactions of selenite with GA and subsequently examined the biomimetic formation of selenium (Se) nanoparticles. We found that in the presence of selenite, the yield of nanofibers was significantly higher, and selenium nanoparticle coated nanofibers were formed. The ability of the nanocomposites to scavenge …

Preparation Of An Electrophilic 3-Methylindole Derivative: Difficulties In Forming A Stable, Suitable Material For The Preparation Of Tryptophan, Jason Boggs, Mariah Mcmasters, Robert W. Curley Jr., Michael J. Panigot

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In an attempt to prepare stereoselectively beta-deuterated tryptophan, N-protected indole-3-methanol compounds were prepared with model studies being done on undeuterated material. Conversion of these compounds to electrophilic species proved exceptionally difficult and resulted in very low yields or recovered starting material only. A summary of the current results utilizing N-tosyl indole-3-methanol will be presented as well as efforts using N-Boc indole-3-methanol.
