- β-lactams are essential structural components of many antibiotics and widely studied due to their biological importance and synthetic versatility.
- The Ugi reaction is a multicomponent reaction, involving a primary amine, carboxylic acid, isocyanide, and an aldehyde or a ketone, that rapidly generates α-acetamido carboxamide derivatives (Ugi adducts).
- The synthesis and characterization of four oxindole-based β-lactam derivatives:
- 1-Benzyl-N-(tert-butyl)-2-oxo-3-(2-oxoazetidin-1-yl)indoline-3-carboxamide (4a).
- N-(tert-butyl)-2-oxo-3-(2-oxoazetidin-1-yl)-1-phenylindol-3-carboxamide (4ab).
- N-(tert-Butyl)-2-oxo-3-(2-oxoazetidin-1-yl)indoline-3-carboxamide (4d).
- N-(tert-butyl)-1-methyl-2-oxo-3-(2-oxoazetidin-1-yl)indol-3-carboxamide (4e).
- The coordination of the four Ugi adducts with Cu (II) and Ni (II) at different pH points to enhance their stability and improve biological activity.
Synthesis Of Benzophenone-O-Glycosides Under Basic Conditions, Samuel Burns
Synthesis Of Benzophenone-O-Glycosides Under Basic Conditions, Samuel Burns
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022
Type 2 diabetes is a growing health concern worldwide characterized by high blood sugar. Anti-diabetic therapy aims at correcting this sugar imbalance by inhibiting the enzyme α-glucosidase which is responsible for cleaving carbohydrates and starch into glucose. Benzophenone glycosides are a class of biomolecules with α-glucosidase inhibitory properties that have garnered some attention. It can be found and isolated from some traditional medicinal plants which was not done for this project. Once isolated, new derivatives can be synthesized by manipulating protecting groups of the starting material to get the benzophenone. The benzophenone can then undergo glycosylation with the protected sugar …
Data For "Subtype-Selective Positive Modulation Of Sk Channels Depends On The Ha/Hb Helices", Miao Zhang, Meng Cui
Data For "Subtype-Selective Positive Modulation Of Sk Channels Depends On The Ha/Hb Helices", Miao Zhang, Meng Cui
Pharmacy Faculty Data Sets
In the activated state of small-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium (SK) channels, calmodulin interacts with the HA/HB helices and the S4-S5 linker. CyPPA potentiates SK2a and SK3 channel activity but not the SK1 and IK subtypes. Here, we report that the subtype-selectivity of CyPPA relies on the HA/HB helices. Mutating residues in the HA (V420) and HB (K467) helices of SK2a channels to their equivalent residues in IK channels diminished the potency of CyPPA. CyPPA elicited prominent responses on mutant IK channels with an arginine residue in the HB helix substituted for its equivalent lysine residue in the SK2a channels …
Automation Of Karl Fischer Titration For Animal Pharmaceutical Product Testing At Elanco Animal Health, Elizabeth L. Grubbs
Automation Of Karl Fischer Titration For Animal Pharmaceutical Product Testing At Elanco Animal Health, Elizabeth L. Grubbs
Annual Student Research Poster Session
Ever wonder what doing research looks like in the context of working in industry? This summer I had the opportunity to work at Elanco Animal Health, the world’s third largest animal pharmaceutical company (and growing!) I worked in the Quality Control laboratories where products are tested before they are sent out the door. I did research to automate a process that checks for the water content of various animal health products. The water content of these products is important for many reasons including expiration dates and FDA requirements. The process that I automated is called Karl Fischer titration and is …

There has been an increase in use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the United States because they are less expensive and believed to be more effective with less adverse effects in comparison to traditional pharmaceutics. Therefore, sales have increased in the US, despite articles and case studies demonstrating the dangers, such as injury and death, related to TCM, stemming from improper labelling, toxic contaminants, and, in some cases, the presence of pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this study was to perform a survival experiment to demonstrate the importance of proper herbal brewing technique and to conduct a molecular and …

Cancer chemotherapy results in systematic damage as the drugs used are also toxic to benign tissue. Sensitizing a cancer cell to therapy by interfering with the DNA repair mechanisms would decrease overall toxicity, as the necessary dosage of chemotherapy drugs would be lowered. The Hartman lab developed a peptide (8.6) that binds with a KD of 1 μM to the C-terminal domain of breast cancer associated protein (BRCA1), blocking homologous recombination. The crystal structure of the peptide shows the tyrosine and threonine residues are close together, suggesting that by cyclizing these positions, the peptide may already be constrained into its …
