Small Molecule Analog Studies Of Paramagnetic Dmso Reductase Enzyme Family Intermediates, Khadanand Kc

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Pyranopterin molybdenum and tungsten enzymes are expressed in numerous organisms from all domains of life. These enzymes catalyze a variety of atom, hydride, and electron transfer reactions. The enzymes are of great importance in the biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur. In recent years, chemists have investigated applications for some of these enzymes as industrial biocatalysts. The dimethylsulfoxide reductase (DMSOr) enzyme family is the broadest family of pyranopterin Mo enzymes. The first coordination sphere of the Mo or W-containing active site for each member of this family is made up of 4 sulfur donors from the two pyranopterin dithiolenes …

Mapping Of The Chromium And Iron Pyrazolate Landscape, Jessica Maria Lopez Oct 2018

Mapping Of The Chromium And Iron Pyrazolate Landscape, Jessica Maria Lopez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this project is to synthesize the first family of polynuclear chromium pyrazolate complexes. Complexity in analysis of the experimental magnetic data of multinuclear complexes arises from their (2S +1)N microstates, where S is the spin of each metal center and N is the number of metal centers. For example, high-spin (HS)-FeIII3 has 216 microstates and HS-FeIII8 ≈ 1.7x106 microstates (S= 5/2). However, complexes with chromium(III) S = 3/2 will have a noticeable reduction of microstates. Mononuclear complexes with formula [mer-CrCl3(pzH*)3] (pz*H = pyrazole, 3-Me-pzH, …

Oxygen Reduction Reaction By Copper Complex Based Electrocatalysts, Congling Zhang May 2015

Oxygen Reduction Reaction By Copper Complex Based Electrocatalysts, Congling Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

My research focuses on catalysis of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by a series of Cu(II) [copper with positive two valence] -1,2,4-triazole complex-based electrocatalysts at the cathode of PEMFC (polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell), an efficient and environmental friendly energy conversion system compared to internal combustion engines in use today. The sluggish kinetics of ORR considerably limited the performance of PEMFCs. Understanding of ORR mechanism is important for developing affordable, active and durable ORR catalysts for such devices.

The first part of my work focused on improving the ORR performance of Cu(II)-1,2,4-triazole complex-based catalysts in an acidic environment by exploring synthesis …
