Strategies for the functionalization of abundant, small molecules into products with added value provide a powerful approach to address environmental sustainability issues. Dinitrogen (N2), and carbon oxides (CO, CO2), are examples of the ample, yet, underutilized atmospheric feedstock of nitrogen and carbon building blocks to produce a variety of chemicals. Although, potentially valuable, small molecules are inert under most conditions, and as such, their industrial activation often requires heterogeneous catalysts operated under high pressures (200 atm) and temperatures (450-600 ºC).
To this end, great efforts in synthetic inorganic chemistry have been devoted to the generation of well-defined and highly reactive …
A Hydrogen-Bond Stabilized Mechanism Of Oxygen Evolution In Photosystem Ii: A Proposed Computational Experiment, Christopher King
A Hydrogen-Bond Stabilized Mechanism Of Oxygen Evolution In Photosystem Ii: A Proposed Computational Experiment, Christopher King
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
The ability of plants to take in water and release oxygen into the atmosphere is crucial to the survival of life on Earth. During photosynthesis, water is oxidized to O2 (dioxygen) at the Oxygen Evolving Complex (OEC) of Photosystem II. Structurally, the OEC resembles a box with an open lid, consisting of metal atoms (four manganese and one calcium) bridged by oxygen atoms. The mechanism of action of this complex, however, is not well understood. Various mechanisms have been proposed in recent years to explain how the OEC oxidizes water to dioxygen, but all of these mechanisms contain gaps …

Improved sensing strategies are needed for facile, accurate and rapid detection of aromatic and nonaromatic explosives. Density functional theory was used to evaluate the relative binding interaction energies between halogen-containing sensor model molecules and nitro-containing explosives. Interaction energies ranged from –18 to –14 kJ/mol and highly directional halogen bonding interactions were observed with bond distances ranging between 3.0 and 3.4 Å. In all geometry optimized structures, the sigma-hole of electropositive potential on the halogen aligned with a lone pair of electrons on the nitro-moiety of the explosive. The computational results predict that the strongest interactions will occur with iodine-based sensors …
Increased Utility Of Ph Sensitive Indicators As High Concentration Co2 Detectors Through The Use Of Polyelectrolyte Complexes As Stabilizing Media, Camden James Johnson
Increased Utility Of Ph Sensitive Indicators As High Concentration Co2 Detectors Through The Use Of Polyelectrolyte Complexes As Stabilizing Media, Camden James Johnson
All Master's Theses
Development of plastic materials which produce visible color change when exposed to different environments has recently attracted attention for many biomedical applications.1,2Many biomedical devices are packaged under high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) which can lower the pH of the packaging environment. This is similar to the CO2 chemistry responsible for ocean acidification.3 Dye molecules that are sensitive to environmental changes in pH (known as pH indicators) can be encapsulated in plastics and produce a visible color change when a medical device is removed from the sterile CO2 environment. Plastics made from large …

Abstract: Phosgene in the atmosphere is produced via the degradation of carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloroform, and a number of chlorine‐containing very short lived substances (VSLS). These VSLS are not regulated by the Montreal Protocol even though they contribute to stratospheric ozone depletion. While observations of VSLS can quantify direct stratospheric source gas injection, observations of phosgene in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere can be used as a marker of product gas injection of chlorine‐containing VSLS. In this work we report upper troposphere/lower stratosphere measurements of phosgene made by the ACE‐FTS (Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer) instrument and compare with results …
The Synthesis Of Ferrocene-Based Ionic Liquids, Stephen Petrochko
The Synthesis Of Ferrocene-Based Ionic Liquids, Stephen Petrochko
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Ionic liquids are compounds which are held together through ionic interactions, and can be classified as salts. However, while most salts have very high melting temperatures, ionic liquids are a class of compounds that can melt at very low temperatures, often at room temperatures. Ionic liquids can have optimal electronic properties for electrochemical applications, particularly for the easy transport of charges. Some new materials are being explored for the development of ionic liquids; one of these materials is ferrocene. Varying the substituents which are attached to ferrocene may produce a material that can be used as an electrolyte in energy …
Facial Rhenium Tricarbonyl Complexes With Modified Dii Ligands, Dominick Vitale
Facial Rhenium Tricarbonyl Complexes With Modified Dii Ligands, Dominick Vitale
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Over the course of this semester, promising preliminary research into a novel area of inorganic chemistry has been underway. Multiple different bis(arylimino)isoindolines (BAI), a compound made from the disubstitution of diiminoisoindoline with aryl amines to form planar tridentate ligands, were tested to determine if the structure could be forcefully bent to fit a facial binding mode. It was theorized that the bending of the usually planar chelate would cause an electronic change, destabilizing the orbitals. Different synthetic techniques were explored allowing the formation a new BAI, 1,3-bis(3-pyrazolylimino)isoindoline which was characterized via X-ray crystallography, as well as a few previously characterized …

X-Ray Crystal Structure Of Au36(Sph-Pch3)24 Nanomolecules, Vigneshraja Ganeshraj
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Au36(SR)24 is one of the most comNanomolecules (NM) in gold NM field and crystal structures of Au36(SR)24 with different thiolate protecting ligand such as tert-butylbenzene thiol, thiophenol and cyclopentane thiol have been reported. It has been predicted that aromatic thiol protected Au36(SR)24 NM have same core structures like the other reported Au36(SR)24 NMs. Due to the steric and electronic conjugation effects the staples on the gold core exhibit minor changes in the bond length without affecting the gold core. By varying the Gold:Thiol ratio the NM size can be controlled. Herein, we report the synthesis, isolation and characterization of two …

The Dynamic Nature And Biophysical Characterization Of Isu1, Fe-S Cluster Assembly Scaffold Protein In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, And Its Significance To Human Disease, Brianne Elizabeth Lewis
Wayne State University Dissertations
Mitochondrial Fe-S cluster biosynthesis is accomplished within yeast utilizing the biophysical characteristics of the “Isu1” scaffold protein. As a member of a highly homologous protein family, Isu1 has sequence conservation with orthologs and a conserved ability to assemble [2Fe-2S] clusters. Regardless of species, scaffold orthologs can exist in both “disordered” and “structured” conformations and is directly related to conformations utilized during Fe-cofactor assembly. During assembly, the scaffold directs the delivery and the utilization of both Fe(II) and sulfide substrates in order to produce [2Fe-2S] clusters, however Zn(II) binding can alter the activity of the scaffold with stabilizing the protein in …

There is no debate of the affect that solid-state lighting has had on the world we live in. Throughout the centuries, lighting has continued to improve from kerosene lanterns to white light emitting diodes. Even though lighting today is sufficient there is still much room to improve color rendering index and efficiency. An active area of research to improve today's lighting technology is by doping inorganic phosphors with luminescent ion centers. There have been numerous reports of inorganic phosphors showing a variety of emission color and luminescence. In this thesis we discuss two new inorganic phosphors codoped with Eu2+ …
In Situ Infrared Spectroscopic Study Of Iron-Catalyzed Hydromagnesiation Of Vinyl Arenes, Jessica Ann Rogers
In Situ Infrared Spectroscopic Study Of Iron-Catalyzed Hydromagnesiation Of Vinyl Arenes, Jessica Ann Rogers
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Iron catalysis, especially homogeneous catalysis, has been a resurging topic of organometallic chemistry research. Discussions of past and present mechanistic analyses for homogeneous iron catalysis will be discussed in Chapter 1. As an expansion of homogeneous iron catalysis, in situ infrared spectroscopy will be used to develop a full mechanistic study of iron-catalyzed hydromagnesiation of vinyl arenes. The kinetic analyses by both initial and observed rate measurements indicate complex concentration dependencies on the (PDI)iron catalyst as well as sacrificial Grignard reagent and styrene. These complexities are not limited to non-linear catalyst and Grignard initial rate and inhibition by styrene/Grignard at …
Photoluminescent Zirconium Complexes For Visible Light Photoredox Catalysis, Yu Zhang
Photoluminescent Zirconium Complexes For Visible Light Photoredox Catalysis, Yu Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early transition metals like zirconium are attractive candidates for the design of luminescent molecules based on earth-abundant elements. Here, a series of zirconium complexes carrying two pyrrolyl-based ligands have been synthesized and characterized. These complexes are photoluminescent upon excitation with visible light and exhibit remarkably long emission lifetimes of hundreds of μs in solution at room temperature. Computational studies using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) were conducted to identify the nature of the luminescent excited states as mixed intra-ligand/ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (ILCT/LMCT) states. The electrochemistry studies revealed multiple reversible redox events for each zirconium complex. Furthermore, the excited state of the …
Oxidative Depolymerization Of Lignin To Low Molecular Weight Aromatics, Yang Song
Oxidative Depolymerization Of Lignin To Low Molecular Weight Aromatics, Yang Song
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
To date, most lignocellulosic biorefinery strategies have focused on optimizing conversion of cellulose to ethanol, leaving lignin as an underutilized biomass constituent. Lignin is engineered by nature with the intent to protect plants from chemical and biological attack; this leaves lignin with high structural irregularity and recalcitrance, rendering conversion of the lignin macromolecule to valuable products particularly challenging. Nevertheless, given that the economics of cellulosic ethanol production are strongly dependent on the value that can be obtained for the lignin co-product, the successful valorization of lignin is a crucial step in the transition towards a bio-based economy.
This thesis focuses …

Three-Dimensional Nanotube Arrays For Solar Energy Harvesting And Production Of Solar Fuels, Wipula P. R. Liyanage
Doctoral Dissertations
"Over the past decade extensive research has been carried out on photovoltaic semiconductors to provide a solution towards a renewable energy future. Fabricating high-efficiency photovoltaic devices largely rely on nanostructuring the photoabsorber layers due to the ability of improving photoabsorption, photocurrent generation and transport in nanometer scale. Vertically aligned, highly uniform nanorods and nanowire arrays for solar energy conversion have been explored as potential candidates for solar energy conversion and solar-fuel generation owing to their enhanced photoconversion efficiencies.
However, controlled fabrication of nanorod and especially nanotube arrays with uniform size and shape and a pre-determined distribution density is still a …
Metallic Systems At The Nano And Micro Scale: Bimetallic Nanoparticles As Catalysts And Mcraly Bond Coats In Thermal Barrier Coatings, Kenneth Kane
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation is split into two parts. The first part will be focused on changes in material properties found at the nanoscale, as miscibility and electronic structure can change significantly with size. The formation of classically-immiscible bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) becomes favorable at the nanoscale and novel catalytic properties can emerge from the bimetallic alloying. The formation of alloyed and non-alloyed BNPs is achieved through pulse laser ablation (PLA) and a significant increase in catalytic activity is observed for both. Recently discovered, the increased activity in the non-alloyed BNPs, deemed multicomponent photocatalysis, is examined and the proposed mechanism discussed. The second …
