Structure-Function Relationships Affecting The Sensing Mechanism Of Monolayer-Protected Cluster Doped Xerogel Amperometric Glucose Biosensors, Luke T. Dipasquale, Nicholas G. Poulos, Jackson R. Hall, Aastha Minocha, Tram Anh Bui, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A systematic study of the structure–function relationships critical to understanding the sensing mechanism of 1st generation amperometric glucose biosensors with an embedded nanoparticle (NP) network is presented. Xerogel-based films featuring embedded glucose oxidase enzyme and doped with alkanethiolate-protected gold NPs, known as monolayer protected clusters (MPCs), exhibit significantly enhanced performance compared to analogous systems without NPs including higher sensitivity, faster response time, and extended linear/dynamic ranges. The proposed mechanism involves diffusion of the glucose to glucose oxidase within the xerogel, enzymatic reaction production of H2O2 with subsequent diffusion to the embedded network of MPCs where it is oxidized, an event …

Quantitative Analysis Of Heavy Metals In Children’S Toys And Jewelry: A Multi-Instrument, Multi-Technique Exercise In Analytical Chemistry And Public Health, Lauren E. Finch, Margot M. Hillyer, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

For most chemistry curricula, laboratory-based activities in quantitative and instrumental analysis continue to be an important aspect of student development/training, one that can be more effective if conceptual understanding is delivered through an inquiry-based process relating the material to relevant issues of public interest and student career trajectories. Laboratory experiences that actively engage students in this manner can be difficult to identify and execute. A special topics, project-based laboratory module is presented here that utilizes multiple techniques and instruments to investigate toxic metal content (lead, cadmium, and arsenic) in children’s toys and toy jewelry. The module effectively illustrates a considerable …

Investigation Into The Biological Importance And Function Of Proinsulin C-Peptide, Christina L. Newsome Jan 2015

Investigation Into The Biological Importance And Function Of Proinsulin C-Peptide, Christina L. Newsome

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The C-peptide of insulin was thought to be biologically inactive, but recent studies have shown that the C-peptide causes multiple molecular and physiological effects. Evidence has shown that C-peptide binds to a cell surface receptor, probably a G-protein coupled receptor, and that the COOH-terminal pentapeptide is essential for binding and constitutes an active site. For a further understanding of the detailed nature of the physiological effects of C-peptide, the receptor structure needs to be determined. We designed an affinity column using C-peptide to try and gain a better understanding of the biological effects by examining what proteins the affinity column …

On The Nature Of Excited States In Ruthenium Complexes: Towards Renewable Energy, Ryan A. Thomas Jan 2015

On The Nature Of Excited States In Ruthenium Complexes: Towards Renewable Energy, Ryan A. Thomas

Wayne State University Dissertations

The 77 K radiative properties (spectra, quantum yields and lifetimes) of ruthenium-polypyridyl complexes are investigated to better understand the effects of electronic mixing on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (3MLCT) excited state properties and how metal-centered (3MC) excited states affect the properties of potential ruthenium photosensitizers. The radiative rate of relaxation (kRAD) determines the maximum possible excited state lifetime when all other relaxation pathways are blocked (kn = 0 for all n  RAD). Thus, the excited state will relax only by means of an emission characteristic of the polypyridyl chromophore. kRAD is expected to increase as the excited state energy increases while the value …

Low-Level Mercury Causes Inappropriate Activation In T And B Lymphocytes In The Absence Of Antigen Stimulation, K. L. Weigand, J. L. Reno, B. M. Rowley Jan 2015

Low-Level Mercury Causes Inappropriate Activation In T And B Lymphocytes In The Absence Of Antigen Stimulation, K. L. Weigand, J. L. Reno, B. M. Rowley

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The immune system primarily utilizes two cell types for adaptive immunity: T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes. T lymphocytes are activated when antigen presenting cells (APCs) present antigen to membrane-bound T cell receptors. B lymphocytes are activated when an antigen binds to receptors embedded in the plasma membrane. In both T and B cells this antigen binding crosslinks the receptor complexes and initiates the signal transduction cascade. These cascades frequently consist of a series of intracellular molecules becoming phosphorylated in a step-wise fashion. Once activated, these cells differentiate into effector cells that clear out the stimulating antigen. Mercury, which is a …

Platinum compounds with trans geometry were less studied …

Synthesis Of Cryptands For Eu2+-Containing Complexes, Chengcheng Wang Jan 2015

Synthesis Of Cryptands For Eu2+-Containing Complexes, Chengcheng Wang

Wayne State University Theses

Eu2+-containing complexes have considerable applications in synthetic chemistry, medical diagnosis, and materials science. However, Eu2+ is easily oxidized in solution when exposed to air. Allen and coworkers have demonstrated that Eu2+ can be stabilized by functionalized cryptands. Based on this idea, I focused my research on synthesizing cryptands. The progress towards synthesizing several modified cryptands is described in the thesis. The Eu2+-containing complexes of these cryptates have potential applications as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, luminescent materials, and magnetic materials.

Mixed Ligand Approach To Design Heterometallic Single-Source Precursors For Low-Temperature Preparation Of Oxide Materials, Craig Matthew Lieberman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There is a considerable interest in the use of metal oxides for development of novel high-technological materials such as gas sensors, multiferroics, and electrocatalysts. In particular, the design of complex oxides, which incorporate more than one type of metal atom, is focused on enriching chemical and physical properties of the target materials and allowing for increased functionality. In order to replace the harsh conditions associated with traditional synthetic routes that often require high temperatures and/or pressures, new soft chemistry methods for the preparation of mixed-metal oxide materials have been developed. One of the most promising directions is the emergence of …

Reactions Of Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene And Lewis Bases To Produce [Pon]3: Methanesulfonic Acid And Dimethylformamide Reactions With [Pcl2n]3, Savannah R. Snyder Jan 2015

Reactions Of Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene And Lewis Bases To Produce [Pon]3: Methanesulfonic Acid And Dimethylformamide Reactions With [Pcl2n]3, Savannah R. Snyder

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Several chlorine/oxygen exchange reactions of [PCl2N]3 were investigated with the goal of forming [PON]3, a precursor to PON materials. The reaction of MeSO3H and Et3N with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene ([PCl2N]3) has been claimed to produce a [PON]3 single molecule. This reaction could not be reproduced. Only partially oxygenated phosphazenes have been obtained. Similarly, in the reaction of [PCl2N]3 and dimethylformamide (DMF) both partial and full oxygenation occurs. Stoichiometry appears to be crucial in determining the species that is produced in both reactions. These products were …

This research focused on the following three areas: optimizing synthesis conditions for maximum radiofrequency induced magnetic hyperthermia, designing a simple and modifiable surface functionalization method for specific or broad biological stability, and in vitro and in …

Ferrocene-Fused Derivatives Of Acenes, Tropones And Thiepins, Bidhya L. Maharjan Jan 2015

Ferrocene-Fused Derivatives Of Acenes, Tropones And Thiepins, Bidhya L. Maharjan

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

This research project is concentrated on tuning the properties of small organic molecules, namely polyacenes, tropones and thiepins, by incorporating redox-active transition metal centers π-bonded to terminal cyclopentadienyl ligands. Organometallic-fused acenequinones, tropones, thiepins and cyclopentadiene-capped polyacenes were synthesized and characterized. This work was divided into three parts: first, the synthesis of ferrocene-fused acenequinones, cyclopentadiene-capped acenequinones and their subsequent aromatization to polyacenes; second, the synthesis of ferrocene-fused tropones, thiotropones and tropone oxime; and third, the synthesis of ferrocene-fused thiepins. Ferrocene-fused quinones are the precursors to our target complexes. Our synthetic route to ferrocenequinones involved two-fold aldol condensation between 1,2-diformylferrocene and naphthalene-1,4-diol …

Investigation Into The Competitive Partitioning Of Dissociated H2 And D2 On Activated Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Wilson D. Shafer Jan 2015

Investigation Into The Competitive Partitioning Of Dissociated H2 And D2 On Activated Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Wilson D. Shafer

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

The Fischer-Tropsch process, discovered in the early to mid-1920s, still has researchers disputing the C1 monomer, and the rate-determining step. A tremendous amount of work, over the years, has focused on how hydrogen plays a role in the pseudo-polymerization of chain initiation and propagation, in an attempt to reveal the mechanism. These investigations attempted to elucidate the debated issues through studying the kinetic isotopic effect (KIE) for CO hydrogenation by switching the syngas from CO/H2 to CO/D2 during a steady-state period. Applying this switching step could result in a deviation in the rate of CO hydrogenation, indicating …
