[M3(Μ3-O)(O2cr)6] And Related Trigonal Prisms: Versatile Molecular Building Blocks For 2-Step Crystal Engineering Of Functional Metal-Organic Materials, Alexander Schoedel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Metal-organic materials (MOMs) assembled from metal-based building blocks and organic linkers have attracted much interest due to their large pore dimensions and their enormous structural diversity. In comparison to their inorganic counterparts (zeolites), these crystalline materials can be easily modified to tailor pore dimensions and functionality for specifically targeted properties.
The work presented herein encompasses the development of a synthetic 2-step process for the construction of novel families of MOMs or 'platforms' and allow us exquisite design and control over the resulting network topologies. Examples of cationic mesoporous structures were initially exploited, containing carboxylate based centers connected by metal-pyridine bonds. …

Multi-Technique Quantitative Analysis And Socioeconomic Considerations Of Lead, Cadmium, And Arsenic In Children's Toys And Toy Jewelry, Margot M. Hillyer, Lauren E. Finch, Alisha S. Cerel, Jonathan D. Dattelbaum, Michael C. Leopold

A wide spectrum and large number of children’s toys and toy jewelry items were purchased from both bargain and retail vendors and analyzed for arsenic, cadmium, and lead metal content using multiple analytical techniques, including flame and furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy as well as X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Particularly dangerous for young children, metal concentrations in toys/toy jewelry were assessed for compliance with current Consumer Safety Product Commission (CPSC) regulations (F963-11). A conservative metric involving multiple analytical techniques was used to categorize compliance: one technique confirmation of metal in excess of CPSC limits indicated a “suspect” item while confirmation on two …

A modular system of lanthanide(III)-containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) conjugates was synthesized and characterized to investigate the influence of length and density of PEG on water-exchange rates of lanthanide(III)-containing complexes. The water-exchange rates of lanthanide(III)-containing complexes contribute to the efficiency of these complexes as T1-shortening and paramagnetic chemical exchange saturation transfer (PARACEST) contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Because the mechanism of these two MRI methods is vastly different, there is …

Probing Proteasome Inhibition By Metal Copmplexes As A New Route For Anticancer Therapy, Dajena Tomco
Wayne State University Dissertations
The scope of this thesis is focused towards the development of metal-containing coordination compounds as potential therapeutic agents. Efforts of this research involve the design, synthesis, and purification of these complexes, as well as their evaluation by spectroscopic, spectrometric, and electrochemical characterization. The antineoplastic properties of these metal-containing pro-drugs are tested against the inhibition activity of the 26S proteasome. Selected metal ions ranging from transition to main group elements have been incorporated in various ligand systems containing phenolate and pyridyl donor sets. The mechanistic behavior of these complexes in solution has been thoroughly investigated along with their in vitro anticancer …

The silicon-based microelectronic industry has made remarkable technological advancements. Among these, new generation consumer electronics, telecommunication devices, and high performance data processing smart devices are of special interest. At present, electronic components existing on a single silicon chip grow rapidly, and soon the miniaturization process of electrical components will face limitations due to heat dissipation. Therefore, as an advanced alternative for silicon-based electronic components, the investigation of nanoscale molecular electronic devices is of great importance. This dissertation research is focused on …

The MOSFET, or metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor, are the sole entities responsible for processing in microchips of everyday electronics, yet they have become extremely small. How can one manufacture such a small, powerful product? By using the simple process of pushing ions away with a nearby electric charge, a switch can be compressed down to unimaginable sizes.

Modified Seed Growth Of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles In Benzyl Alcohol: Magnetic Nanoparticles For Radio Frequency Hyperthermia Treatment Of Cancer, Stanley E. Gilliland Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Iron oxide nanoparticles have received sustained interest for biomedical applications as synthetic approaches are continually developed for precise control of nanoparticle properties. This thesis presents an investigation of parameters in the benzyl alcohol synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles. A modified seed growth method was designed for obtaining optimal nanoparticle properties for magnetic fluid hyperthermia. With a one or two addition process, iron oxide nanoparticles were produced with crystallite sizes ranging from 5-20 nm using only benzyl alcohol and iron precursor. The effects of reaction environment, temperature, concentration, and modified seed growth parameters were investigated to obtain precise control over properties …
Electron And Ion Spectroscopy Of Metal Hydrocarbon Complexes, Sudesh Kumari
Electron And Ion Spectroscopy Of Metal Hydrocarbon Complexes, Sudesh Kumari
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Metal-hydrocarbon complexes were prepared in a laser-vaporization molecular beam source and studied by single-photon zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) and mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy. The ionization energies and vibrational frequencies of the metal complexes were measured from the ZEKE and MATI spectra. Metal-ligand bonding and low-lying electronic states of the neutral and ionized complexes were analyzed by combining the spectroscopic measurements with quantum chemical calculations and spectral simulations.
In this dissertation, the metal complexes of mesitylene, aniline, cyclooctatetraene, benzene, ethene, and propene were studied. For each complex, different effects from metal coordination have been identified. Although metal-bis(mesitylene) sandwich complexes …
Salen Aluminum Compounds In The Dealkylation And Detection Of Organophosphates, Rahul R. Butala
Salen Aluminum Compounds In The Dealkylation And Detection Of Organophosphates, Rahul R. Butala
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The focus of this dissertation is the use of aluminum Schiff base compounds, Salen(tBu)AlBr (SAB), in the dealkylation and detection of organophosphates (OPs). Three SAB compounds, Salen(tBu)AlBr (1), Salpen(tBu)AlBr (2), and Salophen(tBu)AlBr (3) were used to dealkylate a variety of trialkyl OPs. These reactions lead to unique organic-soluble aluminum phosphate compounds containing six-coordinate aluminum. Examples include [salen(tBu)AlOP(O)(OCH3)2]n (4), [salen(tBu)AlOP(O)(OCH2CH3)2]n (5), [salen(tBu)AlOP(O)(OPh)2]n …
