Mechanism Of Sila- And Germafluorenes For Biological Applications, Shelby Jarrett Jun 2022

Mechanism Of Sila- And Germafluorenes For Biological Applications, Shelby Jarrett

Dissertations

2,7-disubstituted silafluorenes and germafluorenes, originally designed for OLED applications, are a class of fluorescent dyes that have gained recent interest as probes for bioimaging and as biosensors to monitor cellular dynamics and interactions. Desirable biological probes absorb in the visible region, have high extinction coefficients, high quantum yield and excellent photostability. Here, their spectral properties are investigated under aqueous conditions for relevant biological applications. These molecules display intense blue fluorescence in the solid state and in solution, have high extinction coefficients, and exhibit appreciable solubility in aqueous solution. To better understand potential applications, the mechanism of fluorescence was investigated. It …

Capabilities And Limitations Of The Spin Hamiltonian Formalism In Single Molecule Magnets, Philip Ferko Jul 2019

Capabilities And Limitations Of The Spin Hamiltonian Formalism In Single Molecule Magnets, Philip Ferko

Dissertations

The rational design of molecular magnetic materials is an ongoing effort involving physics, materials science, and chemistry. A common approach to design of complexes and interpretation of magnetic data is the spin Hamiltonian formalism. In this approach, magnetic data is interpreted through constants extracted from the parameterization of data. In design, certain structural motifs are pursued, rationalized by the minimization or maximization of terms in the spin Hamiltonian. In this work, monometallic complexes were prepared to simplify magnetic behavior and allow the examination of specific factors that influence single molecule magnetism like coordination geometry, ligand identity, symmetry, and spin-orbit coupling. …

The synthesis and crystal structures of two tris(trialkylsilyl)silyl bromide compounds, C9H27BrSi4 (I, HypSiBr) and C27H63BrSi4 (II, TipSiBr), are described. Compound I was prepared in 85% yield by free-radical bromination of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyl-2-(trimethylsilyl)trisilane using bromobutane and 2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) as a radical initiator at 333 K. The molecule possesses threefold rotational symmetry, with the central Si atom and the Br atom being located on the threefold rotation axis. The Si—Br bond distance is 2.2990 (12) Å and the Si—Si bond lengths are 2.3477 (8) Å. The Br—Si—Si bond angles are 104.83 (3)° and the Si—Si—Si bond angles are 113.69 (2)°, reflecting the steric hindrance …

Development Of Rules Of Attraction For Intercalated Guest Molecules Inside Of A Hydrogen Bonded Framework, Matthew Fischer Apr 2018

Development Of Rules Of Attraction For Intercalated Guest Molecules Inside Of A Hydrogen Bonded Framework, Matthew Fischer

Dissertations

Supramolecular chemistry has synthesized large and small molecules which host guest molecules for several decades. What started as a way to mimic of enzymes in nature, has exploded into a sea of materials such as porous coordination polymers, low-density metal-organic frameworks, inclusion compounds, and hydrogen bonded frameworks. We previously designed a layered framework consisting of a metal complex with coordinate covalent ligands. These ligands have peripheral carboxylic acid groups which hydrogen bond to organic pillars containing terminal amines. The layered structure is separated by these pillars, which are closed-packed, creating 1-dimensional channels able to co-crystallize molecules. There is interest in …

Steric Effects On The Formation Of Manganese Oxide Clusters And 2-Dimensional Ammonium Formate Architectures, Carl Oberle Apr 2018

Steric Effects On The Formation Of Manganese Oxide Clusters And 2-Dimensional Ammonium Formate Architectures, Carl Oberle

Dissertations

It has been demonstrated by the Beatty group that altering the identity of the ortho-substituent of a dianiline counterion affects the assembly and dimensionality of a cadmium-chloride layer from 2-D to 0-D. This work seeks to extend this finding to metal oxide and organic hydrogen-bonded materials. By systematically increasing the ortho-substituent’s size on the benzoate building block of reported manganese oxide clusters, of formula MnxOy(O2C-R)zLw (where R = Alkyl, L = neutral monodentate ligand), we aim to impact the self-assembly of these materials relative to their parent …

After activation by chloride abstraction utilizing NaBArF as an activator (BArF = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate), a complex of the general formula [RuCl2 (PHOX)2 ] was utilized as a catalyst in propargylic substitution reactions, where PHOX is a phosphinooxazoline ligand. Oxygen and nitrogen-centered nucleophiles could be employed in the substitution of a propargylic acetate to obtain the corresponding propargylic substitution products in 87% to 9% isolated yields (45 °C, 16 h reaction time, toluene solvent, 1-2 mol% catalyst loading, 1-2 mol% activator).

Cadmium Chloride Dimensionality Changes From Ortho-Substituted Anilines, Stephanie Cernicek Jul 2017

Cadmium Chloride Dimensionality Changes From Ortho-Substituted Anilines, Stephanie Cernicek

Dissertations

Inorganic-organic hybrid metal halide materials have been of great interest recently due to the useful properties offered by such a combination. The inorganic portions usually consisting of MX62- subunits, (M = Pb, Sn, Cd, Cu; X = Cl, Br, I) most often form 2-D perovskite layers where the metals are bridged by corner sharing halides. The organic portion, usually consisting of primary amines or anilines provides a template for the inorganic framework and in some cases, dictates the dimensionality (2-D, 1-D, 0-D) of the network. These materials have various applications in host-guest chemistry catalysis, and gas storage, or …

Syntheses, Structures And Magnetic Properties Of Cyano-Bridged Transition Metal Compounds, Uma Prasad Mallik

Dissertations

To investigate the hypotheses, that systematically changing the electronic and relative sizes of tricyanido building blocks will tune magnetic properties of their cluster derivatives, we prepared two new tricyanido pyrazolylborate complexes, [NEt4][(Tp*Me)Fe(CN)3]·H2O and [NEt4][(Tp*Bn)FeIII(CN)3]·H2O·MeOH, and investigated their self-assembly. The new building blocks were prepared, structurally characterized, and their coordination chemistry explored to prepare small molecule-based magnetic materials.

Three bent trinuclear ferromagnetic cluster derivatives of {[(Tp*Me)FeIII(CN)3]2[NiII(L)2]}·n(solvent) [L = …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

New iron(II) and iron(III) complexes bearing bis(imino)pyridine ligands were synthesized and successfully applied to the Mukaiyama aldol reaction. The two complexes [FeCl2 L] (L = bis(imino)pyridine ligand, 55% isolated yield) and [LFe(μCl)3FeCl3] (76%) were obtained employing FeCl2 and FeCl3 iron sources, respectively, and characterized by elemental analyses, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy and, one example, by X-ray diffraction. The two new iron complexes were subsequently employed as catalysts in the Mukaiyama aldol reaction after abstraction of two chlorides by AgSbF6 to obtain the aldol products in 43% to virtually quantitative yield (CH2Cl2 solvent, room temperature, 3.5 to 16 h reaction time). …

This paper reports extensions of the well-established field of phosphine–borane chemistry. Linked clusters, for example, {[(PPh3)2(CO)OsB4H7-3-BH2-PPh2]2 [(Fe(C5H4)2]}, are formed in reactions of rigid backboned bidentate phosphines with {2,2,2-(PPh3)2(CO)-nido-2-OsB5H9]. Reaction of bidentate phosphines with the unsaturated clusters [8,8-PPh3)2-nido-8,7-RhSB9H10] and [9,9-(PPh3)2-nido-9,7,8-RhC2B8 H11] leads to the isolation of novel species such as {1-(PPh3)[1,3-(µ-dppm)]-closo -1,2-RhSB9H8},with a dppm molecule bridging adjacent metal and boron vertices in the cage, [1,1-(ç2-dppe)-3-(ç1-dppm)-closo-1,2-RhSB 9H8], a mixed ligand system, and {9,9-ç2-[(ç2-BH3)PPh2PCH2 PPh2]-nido- 9,7,8-RhC2B8H11} which contains a bidentate dppm BH3 moiety. The formation of bidentate phosphine-linked main group transition-metal moieties such as [BH3PPh2(CH)nPPh2IrCp*Cl2] is also described as is an example of …
