Synthesis Of A Phenyl Substituted Zinc Dipyrrin Complex For The Purpose Of Analyzing Aromatic Substitutions On The Characteristics Of Compounds Of This Class, Kole Owen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The field of photochemistry is as innovative in development as it is broad in application. However, utilization of energy from the sun’s electromagnetic radiation remains secondary to the combustion of fossil fuels for the global energy consumption. This is neither a sustainable nor renewable system, and it has contributed to a major decline in the health of our global environment as the greenhouse gases emission has led to an incline in global temperatures and ocean acidity. To develop effective ways to utilize solar energy, experimental effort is being directed towards the understanding of photosensitizers, molecules which absorb solar radiation and …

Investigating The Role Of Charge Separation In Triplet State Formation In Zinc Dipyrrin Photosensitizers, Irene Y. Dzaye May 2021

Investigating The Role Of Charge Separation In Triplet State Formation In Zinc Dipyrrin Photosensitizers, Irene Y. Dzaye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

About 85% of the world’s energy is derived from non-renewable sources—coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Solar photocatalysis is one way to potentially generate cheap renewable fuels by harnessing energy from the sun using a photosensitizer and converting it into chemical energy. The efficiency of a photosensitizer depends on its capacity to form a prolonged triplet excited state. Zinc dipyrrin complexes have the potential to be efficient sensitizers for reductive photochemistry, but their ability to form long-lived triplet excited states still needs extensive research. The overall aim of this research is to probe the role charge separation plays in the formation …

Synthesis Of A Zinc Dipyrrin Complex For Photocatalytic Reduction Of Co2, Sylvia Meredith May 2021

Synthesis Of A Zinc Dipyrrin Complex For Photocatalytic Reduction Of Co2, Sylvia Meredith

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Zinc dipyrrin complexes have the potential to act as cheap, effective photosensitizers. Synthesizing and studying different types could lead to more efficient solar energy harvesting processes, especially the production of solar fuel. Here, two attempts to synthesize 1,3,7,9-tetraphenyl-5-mesityldipyrromethene are reported and discussed. According to 1H NMR, the first synthesis attempt was not successful. The second synthesis attempt was not purified effectively, so 1H NMR produced inconclusive results. Further purification strategies or alternate synthesis methods are required.

Deposition Of Platinum Particles On Surface-Modified Carbon Ultramicroelectrodes, Caitlin Millsaps May 2019

Deposition Of Platinum Particles On Surface-Modified Carbon Ultramicroelectrodes, Caitlin Millsaps

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Nanoparticles are used as electrocatalysts due to their large surface area-to-volume ratios. Most studies of nanoparticle electrocatalysis are performed on collections of particles on a support, which represent ensemble average behavior influenced by spatial distribution of the nanoparticles. Therefore, recent emphasis has been placed on analyzing electrocatalytic behavior of single particles. The focus here is to develop carbon ultramicro- and nanoelectrode platforms for studying the electrocatalytic properties of single metal nanoparticles. Ultramicroelectrodes were prepared using chemical vapor deposition of carbon in pulled quartz capillaries. Electrode diameters were determined by cyclic voltammetry. Electrodes were modified using a soft nitriding technique to …

Gas Chromatography Analysis Of Co2 Reduction Photocatalysis With Zinc Dipyrrin Complexes, Alex Day

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Bis(1,3,7,9-tetramethyl-5-mesityldipyrrinato)zinc(II) (ZnDPY) was synthesized in the lab by the McCusker group and a procedure was created to analyze its ability as a photosensitizer, a molecule that provides the energy for the reaction to occur by capturing light energy and turning it into a form that can be used by the photocatalyst. While more work is needed, preliminary steps have been made to create a process that can analyze the amount of carbon monoxide produced by a photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction with ZnDPY as the photosensitizer. Progress has been made via the setup of a reaction apparatus, targeted gas chromatography …

Development Of Granulated Adsorbent For Clean-Up Of Water Contaminated By Cesium, Esther Alorkpa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted on sol-gel synthesis of an adsorbent (phosphotungstic acid embedded in silica gel, H-PTA/SiO2) of radioactive cesium. A novelty of this work is covalent bonding of PTA to the surface of solid support that prevents leaching from the surface of the material. The sample was granulated with a binder, aluminium oxide (γ-Al2O3). Solid-state NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy were used to confirm the presence of Keggin units of PTA in the bound materials. Thermal analysis of H-PTA/SiO2 - γ-Al2O3 (50 %) showed that the water content in the …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zinc(Ii) Dipyrrin Photosensitizers, Norah Alqahtani Aug 2018

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zinc(Ii) Dipyrrin Photosensitizers, Norah Alqahtani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction transforms CO2 to useful chemicals and fuels, reducing CO2 emissions and making fossil fuels more renewable. Due to a lack of earthabundant sensitizers, we want to design new earth-abundant sensitizers to go with the many known carbon dioxide reduction catalysts. Zn(II) dipyrrin complexes strongly absorb visible light, but their excited state properties have not been widely studied. To investigate their photophysical properties, two Zn dipyrrin complexes, with and without heavy atoms, were synthesized and characterized by NMR and mass spectrometry. The photophysical properties of the two complexes were measured in polar and non-polar solvents, particularly fluorescence …

Functionalized Silica Gel For Adsorption Of Cesium From Solution, Kenneth Marshall Seaton Iii May 2017

Functionalized Silica Gel For Adsorption Of Cesium From Solution, Kenneth Marshall Seaton Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mesoporous silica gel containing embedded phosphotungstic acid (PTA) was synthesized by sol-gel co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate with PTA in acidic media. The obtained material had high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Theory (BET) surface area and pore volume. A characteristic band of the Keggin structure of PTA was present in its FT-IR spectrum while its X-ray diffraction patterns were absent. This proved the embedding of PTA on a sub-molecular level and not as a second phase. Acidic sites were determined by neutralization with base in aprotic solvent, followed by titration of the remaining base with an acid. The material demonstrated high adsorption capacity of …

A Study Of The Kinetics Of A Reaction Between Vo(Hedta)-1 And Hydrogen Peroxide, Elaina B. Campbell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Vanadium is commonly used as an agent to make tools rust-resistant. As a transition metal, it can be used as a catalyst due to its ability to change oxidation states. VO(HEDTA)-1, a complex of the vanadyl ion, VO2+ and HEDTA (N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine-N,N’,N’-triacetic acid) was readily formed. This complex containing vanadium in the +4 oxidation state was reacted with hydrogen peroxide to form a vanadate complex. This vanadate complex was formed as a first step in simulating the vanadate(V)-dependent haloperoxidases in marine algae, a yet uncharacterized reaction. Electron absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis) was used to observe the oxidation of V(IV) …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rhodium Acetate With Functionalized Benzonitriles, Jared M. Lowe May 2015

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rhodium Acetate With Functionalized Benzonitriles, Jared M. Lowe

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Dirhodium complexes are effective catalysts in carbene transformations. These reactions involve chemistry between the catalyst and a carbene generated in situ. In order to better understand the rhodium-carbon bond, studies of rhodium acetate, Rh2(OAc)4, and a variety of functionalized benzonitriles were proposed. Diadducts of rhodium acetate with 4-nitrobenzonitrile, 4-aminobenzonitrile, 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile, and 3,5-dinitrobenzonitrile were successfully prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography. IR and NMR spectroscopy were also employed for characterization purposes.
