Steric Effects Of Alkyl Ammonium Salts On The Combustion Of Exchanged Smectite Clays, Celeste A. Keith Jun 2018

Steric Effects Of Alkyl Ammonium Salts On The Combustion Of Exchanged Smectite Clays, Celeste A. Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bomb calorimetry was explored as a new method for determining the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clays. Smectite clays were modified with several alkyl ammonium salts varying in number of carbons and the spatial orientation of the carbons about the central nitrogen atom. The clays used, standards purchased from the Source Clay Repository, have CECs of 44, 80, 88, and 120 meq/100 g. Theoretically, the combustion energy of the organo-clays should be approximately the same for each salt. Any differences in energy would be due to the different structures of the salts and how they are oriented in the interlamellar …

Multi-Reference Systems In Chemistry; Unconventional Bonding In Organic Chemistry; Covalent Bonding In Transition Metal Clusters, Alan Wilfred Humason May 2018

Multi-Reference Systems In Chemistry; Unconventional Bonding In Organic Chemistry; Covalent Bonding In Transition Metal Clusters, Alan Wilfred Humason

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

The geometries, chemical properties, and reactivities of molecules are determined by their electronic structure. The field of ab initio computational chemistry works to calculate the kinetic and potential energies between the nuclei and electrons of a molecule. These calculations usually begin with the determination the electronic ground state.

Molecules that cannot be adequately described with a single, ground state configuration are called \textit{multi-reference systems}, which require the calculation of a linear combination of all pertinent electronic configurations, with a corresponding increase in computational cost. This is not `black box' methodology, because solving these systems requires a good understanding of the …

Detection Of Salen-Type Tracers For Subterranean Fluid Flow Monitoring Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Jenny C. Sanchez

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A series of hydrocarbon and aqueous soluble salen-type ligands have been synthesized and characterized by electronic and vibrational spectroscopy. Aqueous soluble salen-type ligands were complexed to a metal and investigated as potential underground fluid flow tracers using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) as the analytical technique. Vibrational spectra obtained from SERS was shown to have enhanced the spectral signal for these complexes in low concentrations though did not show significant differences between the free ligands and their metal complexes. This research has shown that, with some structural modifications, salen-type ligands can be effective candidates as subterranean fluid flow tracers when SERS …

Photoelectrochemical Studies On Non-Noble Metal Based Catalysts Towards Tandem Solar Water Splitting, Arun Siddarth Sridhar May 2018

Photoelectrochemical Studies On Non-Noble Metal Based Catalysts Towards Tandem Solar Water Splitting, Arun Siddarth Sridhar

Dissertations

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting makes direct use of solar energy incident on semiconductor photoelectrodes, and it is a convenient, economic option to produce high purity hydrogen at low temperatures. The use of multiple light absorbers can increase overall solar energy utilization and provide a solution to the trade-off between overall band gap and band edge positioning of photoelectrodes specific to solar water oxidation and water reduction. The study of non-noble metal based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are essential for economic practical commercialization of photo-electrolyzers. This dissertation focuses on the use of a variety …

From Flasks To Applications: Design And Optimization Of Giant Quantum Dots Using Traditional And Automated Synthetic Methods, Christina J. Hanson

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Semiconducting nanocrystals, also known as quantum dots (QDs), that emit light with near-unity quantum yield and are extremely photostable are attractive options as down-conversion and direct electricity-to-light materials for a variety of applications including solid-state lighting, display technologies, bio-imaging and optical tracking. Standard QDs with a core/thin shell structure display fluorescence intermittency (blinking) and photobleaching when exposed to prolonged room temperature excitation for single dot measurements, as well as significant reabsorption and energy transfer when densely packed into polymers or at high solution concentrations.

We have developed thick shell “giant” QDs (gQDs), ultra-stable photon sources both at the ensemble and …

The Investigation Of Oxidative Addition Reactions Of Metal Complexes In Cross-Coupling Catalytic Cycles Based On A Unique Methodology Of Coupled Ion/Ion-Ion/Molecule Reactions, Mariah L. Parker Jan 2018

The Investigation Of Oxidative Addition Reactions Of Metal Complexes In Cross-Coupling Catalytic Cycles Based On A Unique Methodology Of Coupled Ion/Ion-Ion/Molecule Reactions, Mariah L. Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Popular catalytic cycles, such as the Heck, Suzuki, and Negishi, utilize metal centers that oscillate between two oxidation states (II/0) during the three main steps of catalysis: reductive elimination, oxidative addition, and transmetallation. There has been a push to use less toxic, cheaper metal centers in catalytic cycles, leading to interest in first-row transition metals, such as nickel and cobalt. With these metals, the cycles can potentially pass through the +1 oxidation state, which acts as reactive intermediates, undergoing oxidative additions to form products, potentially with radical characteristics. The oxidative addition steps of catalytic cycles are critical to determining overall …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Spectroscopy Of Donor-Acceptor Charge Transfer Complexes, Dominic Kofi Kersi

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A series of square-planar metal (diimine)(dichalcogenolene) chromophoric complexes have been synthesized, characterized and studied spectroscopically. Studies conducted on diimineplatinum(II) dichalcogenolene complexes (LPtL’) using time resolved spectroscopic techniques such as transient absorption and emission, reveal a charge-separated excited state of the type dichalcogenolene → diimine charge-transfer (LL’CT) [(dichalcogenolene•+)Pt(diimine•-) with an open shell donor-acceptor biradical character. This makes the low-energy ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LL’CT), or the mixed-metal ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLL’CT), transitions of diimineplatinum(II) dichalcogenolene complexes particularly interesting to us in facilitating our knowledge of biradical charge-separated states. Long-live excited state lifetimes were observed for these complexes upon visible photoexcitation …

The Electrochemical Deposition Of Samarium And Europium Dissolved In Ionic Liquid Solvent, Bea Martinez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Rare-earth elements include the lanthanide series in the periodic table with the addition of scandium and yttrium. China produces approximately 95% of the world’s rare-earths supply and is the largest consumer of the world’s rare earth supply. Domestic production of rare-earth metals is a priority in the US. The domestic demand for rare-earth elements is largely based on their use in electronic devices, catalytic converters, and more importantly defense applications. Therefore, China’s monopoly of rare-earth elements is viewed as a threat to national security. Although capital investments have resulted in an increase in domestic mining and refining of rare-earth materials, …

Real Time Monitoring Of Photocatalysis: An Application And Expansion Of The Quartz Crystal Microbalance, Perrin Godbold

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

There are many applications of photocatalytic chemistry, with hundreds of researchers investigating photocatalytic materials. Another method of investigation could aid these researchers and contribute significantly to this field. This study attempts to develop a new method of analysis by expanding the capabilities of the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) into the realm of photocatalysis. We coated QCM crystals with the stable and well-known photocatalyst, titanium dioxide, and utilized these coated crystals to begin to develop an analysis procedure for our modified instrument. Some indication of the QCM’s sensitivity was seen, but the UV irradiation elicited a frequency change independent of the …

Homogeneous Ligand-Centered Hydrogen Evolution And Hydrogen Oxidation : Exploiting Redox Non-Innocence To Drive Catalysis., Andrew Z. Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogen is a promising carbon-free fuel / energy carrier and is an essential building block for many industrial and agricultural processes. Rising energy demands have ignited interest in the development of carbon-free and carbon neutral energy sources. In this context, hydrogen is an attractive candidate—being energy-dense, carbon-free—and easily accessible through a two-electron reduction of water. Accordingly, many electrochemical homogeneous catalyst systems have been studied, with a focus on understanding the mechanism of hydrogen evolution proceeding through metal-hydride intermediates. However, there has been a renaissance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst design, with many groups implicating ligand redox non-innocence as a …

Bond Length And Bond Valence Relationships For Chromium Oxides, Chromium Sulfides, Molybdenum Oxides, And Molybdenum Sulfides, J. Labrecque, F. D. Hardcastle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Pauling determined an empirical logarithmic dependence of bond order (bond valence), s, to bond length, R, s = exp(R0 – R/ b), where R0 is unit bond length and b is a fitting parameter. Recently, an expression was derived for relating the b fitting parameter to theoretically derived atomic orbital exponents. With a method to calculate b, both R0 and atomic orbital exponents can be experimentally determined through optimized fitting for Cr-O, Cr-S, Mo-O, and Mo-S. In the present study, bond length – valence relationships are found for Cr-O, Cr-S, Mo-O, and Mo-S chemical …

Bond Length And Bond Valence For Tungsten-Oxygen And Tungsten-Sulfur Bonds, F. D. Hardcastle, R. Lykins

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In 1947, Linus Pauling presented an “empirical” dependence of bond valence (s, also referred to as bond order) and bond length R: s = exp[(R0-R)/b], where R0 is bond length of unit valence and “b” is a fitting parameter. Recently, an expression was derived for relating the b fitting parameter to theoretically derived atomic orbital exponents. With a method to calculate b, both R0 and atomic orbital exponents can be experimentally determined through optimized fitting for W-O and W-S bonds. In the present study, bond …

This dissertation focuses on two of the key fields where lanthanides find ready application: as optically active materials with a focus on the lanthanide sulfides, and as catalytic materials with a focus on cerium oxide.

The lanthanide sulfides have attracted considerable interest for their potential as solar energy conversion materials, pigments, infrared window materials, and phosphor host media. However, applications of these materials remain limited due to their synthetic difficulty along with their not well understood properties compounded by both their difficulty in manufacturing as well as in simulating largely due to the need to take into account f-shell electrons. …

The Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On The Reactivity Of Synthetic Ada Repair Protein Analogues, Josiah G. Elsberg May 2016

The Effects Of Hydrogen Bonding On The Reactivity Of Synthetic Ada Repair Protein Analogues, Josiah G. Elsberg

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The study of bioinorganic chemistry is an important field, as it can provide insight as to why Nature has chosen certain active sites and structures within different kinds of metalloproteins. Ada repair protein, a zinc-containing metalloprotein, is one such topic of interest. Although it is known that Ada RP is able to repair methyl-phosphotriester backbone damage by self-methylation of one of its cysteine groups, the mechanism is not fully understood. Two pathways have been proposed: a dissociative pathway where the Zn-S bond becomes a zinc/sulfur ion pair, and an associative pathway where a four ringed σ-metathesis occurs. Previous research has …

The Dawn Of New Quantum Dots: Synthesis And Characterization Of Ge1-Xsnx Nanocrystals For Tunable Bandgaps., Richard J. Esteves

Theses and Dissertations

Ge1-xSnx alloys are among a small class of benign semiconductors with composition tunable bandgaps in the near-infrared spectrum. As the amount of Sn is increased the band energy decreases and a transition from indirect to direct band structure occurs. Hence, they are prime candidates for fabrication of Si-compatible electronic and photonic devices, field effect transistors, and novel charge storage device applications. Success has been achieved with the growth of Ge1-xSnx thin film alloys with Sn compositions up to 34%. However, the synthesis of nanocrystalline alloys has proven difficult due to larger discrepancies (~14%) in …

Photochemistry Of A Series Of Weakly Coupled Dinuclear Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes, Latisha Michelle Puckett Dec 2015

Photochemistry Of A Series Of Weakly Coupled Dinuclear Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes, Latisha Michelle Puckett

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An improved synthetic method was developed for symmetric ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes with the form L2Ru(diphen)RuL2. The scope of the reaction was investigated in regards to the ligands, bridging ligands, and starting materials. Several ligands were successful in the synthesis, including 2,2’-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4’-dimethyl-2,2’-dipyridyl (dmb), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dpphen), and 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (tmphen). Ligands that did not react to form symmetric dimeric complexes were 2,2’-bipyrazine, bpz, and 2,2’-bipyrimidine, bpm.

Dpp, 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)-pyrazine, effectively replaced diphen as the bridging ligand to produce (phen)2Ru(dpp)Ru(phen)24+. However, replacing the [Ru(CO)2Cl2]n with Ru(DMSO)4Cl2 did not prove successful. The newly developed synthesis was also applied to the synthesis of …

Mechanistic Studies Of Salt Effects On Bimolecular Electron-Transfer Reactions Of Pentaamine Ruthenium Pyridyl Complexes Studied By 19f Nmr Line-Broadening And T2 Spin-Echo Techniques, Nicholas J. Magarian

Master's Theses

Kinetic salt effects on the bimolecular ET self-exchange reaction between pentaamineruthenium(II)(3-trifluoromethylpyridine)2+, (NH3)5RuIItfmp2+, and pentaamineruthenium(III)(3-trifluoromethylpyridine)3+, (NH3)5RuIIItfmp3+, have been measured using both 19F NMR line-broadening and CPMG T2 spin-echo relaxation techniques in H2O and D2O. Over the equimolar reactants concentration range of 0.10 mM – 8.00 mM there was a definite “self-salting” rate increase arising from the increased solution ionic strengths due to the reactants and counterions themselves. The magnitude of this effect diverged significantly, however, …
