Investigation Of Early Complex Formation Of Huntingtin Protein With And Without Lipids, Alyssa R. Stonebraker Jan 2023

Investigation Of Early Complex Formation Of Huntingtin Protein With And Without Lipids, Alyssa R. Stonebraker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion of the polyglutamine (polyQ) domain of the huntingtin protein (htt). The expansion of the polyQ domain beyond a threshold of approximately 35 repeats triggers complex toxic aggregation mechanisms and results in altered interactions between htt and lipid membranes. Many factors modulate these processes. One such modulator includes sequences flanking the polyQ domain, most notably the first 17 amino acids at the N-terminus of the protein (Nt17), and environmental factors including the presence of membranous structures. Nt17 has the propensity to form an amphipathic a-helix in the presence of …

3d Printed Microfluidic Devices For Advanced Fluid Manipulation In Biomedical Applications, Kathrine Curtin Jan 2023

3d Printed Microfluidic Devices For Advanced Fluid Manipulation In Biomedical Applications, Kathrine Curtin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Microfluidics are valuable devices in the biomedical field because of their remarkable ability to manipulate small volumes of fluid and facilitate reactions. Microfluidics have several significant advantages, including their portability, low cost, fast reaction times, and high surface area-to-volume ratios. Microfluidics be used for a multitude of applications, including bioanalysis, cellular assays, organ-on-a-chip, and separations. Microfluidics have great potential to overcome many challenges in conventional chemical and biological applications. However, complex fabrication procedures in silicon, glass, thermoplastics, and (polydimethylsiloxane) PDMS devices make rapidly optimizing and prototyping devices challenging. Microfluidic fabrication techniques have been a long-standing challenge in successfully translating these …

Phosphorus Release And Recovery From Simulated Ferric Wastewater Sludge, Aseel Alnimer Jan 2023

Phosphorus Release And Recovery From Simulated Ferric Wastewater Sludge, Aseel Alnimer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Phosphorus (P) is a fundamental element necessary for all life forms and a key component in the fertilizer industry. Meanwhile, the excessive load of P to water bodies due to human activities has the potential to promote eutrophication. Wastewater treatment plants remove P either biologically or chemically and produce P rich sludge which could be a potential renewable source for P. At present, commercial technologies exist for P recovery from biological wastewater sludge. However, P recovery from chemical sludge particularly iron(III)-phosphate (Fe-P) sludge generated in chemical P removal plants that use iron(III) salts remains a challenge.

This study explored, in …

Investigation Of Unexpected Purple Substance Extracted From Newsprint Paper, Raquel Wilhelm Jan 2023

Investigation Of Unexpected Purple Substance Extracted From Newsprint Paper, Raquel Wilhelm

Honors Program Theses

In an attempt to extract a green dye from newsprint advertisements, it was serendipitously discovered that a purple substance can be extracted from newsprint paper using methanol or acetic acid.1 Further investigations involving blank newsprint paper showed that the purple substance was a part of the paper itself rather than a component of the ink in the advertisements. Soxhlet extraction was used on the blank newspaper print to obtain the compound. Using different analytical instruments, characteristics of the compound were determined such as potential structures, functional groups, and percent composition. The ultimate goal was to determine the compound and its …

Food Waste Storage Gaseous Emissions Detection And Quantification Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Ryley A. Burton-Tauzer Jan 2023

Food Waste Storage Gaseous Emissions Detection And Quantification Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Ryley A. Burton-Tauzer

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

A growing interest in sustainable waste management and the implementation of new policies have prompted a shift towards alternative resource recovery methods for organic waste, including food waste. To effectively assess alternative food waste treatment scenarios, it is important to evaluate the life cycle impacts associated with each scenario. The storage phase of food waste, encompassing its accumulation in kitchens, and storage in bins for collection and transportation, has been overlooked as a source of greenhouse gases in previous studies. This investigation aimed to identify the greenhouse gases emitted during the initial five-day period of low-oxygen storage. An open dynamic …
