Does A Plastron Improve Heat Transfer?, Madani A. Khan, Jeffrey Alston, Andrew Guenthner Aug 2014

Does A Plastron Improve Heat Transfer?, Madani A. Khan, Jeffrey Alston, Andrew Guenthner

STAR Program Research Presentations

Superamphiphobic surfaces strongly repel both water and oils. In this work, aluminum coupons are processed by sanding with various grit of sand paper to impart microscale roughness. Subsequent submersion of the aluminum substrate in boiling water grows nanoscale grass-like structures. The oxide layer of Al is slightly soluble in water. During a fast diffusion/equilibrium, Al2O3 nanograss grows on the surface. A low energy coating is then deposited on the surface. The micro and nanoscale features create re-entrant structures that trap air enabling contact liquid to be in a Cassie-Baxter state. Superamphiphobicity of the samples were confirmed by …

Antimicrobial Nanoparticles: A Green And Novel Approach For Enhancing Bactericidal Efficacy Of Commercial Antibiotics, Monic Shah

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

On the verge of entering the post-antibiotic era, numerous efforts are in place to regain the waning charm of antibiotics which are proving ineffective against most “Superbugs”. Engineered nanomaterials, especially gold nanoparticles (GNPs) capped with antibacterial agents, are proving to be an effective and novel strategy against multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. In this study, we report a one-step synthesis of antibioticcapped GNPs (25 ± 5 nm) utilizing the combined reducing and capping ability of a cephalosporin antibiotic, ceftazidime. No signs of aggregation or leaching of ceftazidime from GNP surface was observed upon its storage. Antibacterial testing showed dosedependent broad spectrum …

Selective Oxidations By Iron(Iii) Porphyrins And Iron(Iii) Corroles, Aaron Dalnamath Carver

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The selective oxidation of organic compounds represents a leading technology for chemical industries. They are used in chemical synthesis in the pharmaceutical and petrochemicals industries, and possible the decontamination of harmful substances. However, oxidations reaction are among the most challenging processes to control. Many stoichiometric oxidants with heavy metals are expensive, or toxic maybe both, and therefore unfeasible to be utilized. The ideal processes for catalytic oxidation would use molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as the primary oxygen source, with transition metal catalysts to mimic the predominant oxidation catalysts in Nature, the cytochrome P450 enzymes. This study focuses on the …

Modified-Electrodes For Redox-Magnetohydrodynamic (Mhd) Pumping For Microfluidic Applications, Christena Kayl Nash

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A new microfluidic pumping and stirring technique was demonstrated for lab-on-a-chip applications. Microfluidics was accomplished via redox-MHD, which takes advantage of a body force (FB) that is generated when there is a net movement of ions in solution (j) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field (B), according to the equation FB = j×B. In this work the movement of ions in solution was generated using electrodes modified with the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) rather than a redox species in solution, which can interfere with analyte detection and with biological species. …

Structural Studies Of Bile Salt Aggregation By Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Mass Spectrometry, Nicholas Doyle

Master’s Theses

Bile salts are biomolecules that are produced in the liver and are responsible for a range of functions in the process of digestion, primarily the emulsification of dietary fat and fat-soluble vitamins. Despite their importance in biological chemistry, the structure and dynamics of bile salt aggregation are not well understood. The efforts described herein attempt to enhance the understanding of cholate aggregation numbers (AN), critical micelle concentration (CMC), micellar structure(s), and interactions with a binaphthyl probe molecule. Cholate is the most common bile salt in mammals and is, therefore, a decent model for describing bile salt aggregation. CMC determination is …

Statistical Comparison Of Results Of Redox Titrations Using K-2 Cr-2o-7 And Kio-3 In The Undergraduate Analytical Chemistry Lab, David W. Randall, Luis K. Garibay

Faculty Publications

Reducing the quantity of hazardous substances used and hazardous waste generated by under- graduate laboratory experiments is important. However, simply replacing hazardous compounds with less hazardous reagents may not retain the pedagogical (or analytical) goal of the experiment if the chemistry does not fundamentally work. We evaluated several literature-based replacement oxidants for K2Cr2O7 (potassium dichromate) and identified KIO3 (potassium iodate) as the only che- mically viable alternative for thiosulfate standardizations, consistent with use of iodate by others. Using ANOVA analysis, two years of student results where K2Cr2O7 was used as the oxidant were compared with two years of student results …

Physical And Chemical Attributes Of A Genetically Modified Fruit Pectin, Carl Patrick Littrell Jul 2014

Physical And Chemical Attributes Of A Genetically Modified Fruit Pectin, Carl Patrick Littrell

Open Access Theses

Pectin is an important polymer used in the food industry as a thickening and gelling agent. Though pectin is ubiquitous in plants, chemical and structural differences among pectin molecules prevent most from being viable for industrial use. Enzymes found naturally in fruit cell walls during the ripening process impair many desirable attributes of fruit pectins, rendering them unsuitable for industrial applications. Pectin methylesterase (PME) is one such enzyme whose expression can be altered during ripening through the use of recombinant genetic engineering. Reduction in levels of PME results in increased degree of methylation and molecular size of pectin, greatly increasing …

Investigation Into The Control Of Melittin Secondary Structure And Antimicrobial Activity, Zachary B. Molinets

Open Access Theses

Antimicrobial resistance has been an exponentially growing problem since the discovery of antibiotics. Antibiotics have been misused for many years and this misuse has grown into a real problem for the medical community. While there are countless safeguards to prevent infection by a resistant strain of bacteria, there are still many plagued by it and must be treated with sometimes dangerous antibiotics. Melittin, along with many other peptides, contain potent antimicrobial properties, but are also toxic toward enthrocytes. The control of the secondary structure of peptides provides the key to adjusting their activity.

Cyanide causes toxic effects by inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase, resulting in cellular hypoxia and cytotoxic anoxia, and can eventually lead to death. Cyanide exposure can be verified by direct analysis of cyanide concentrations or analyzing its metabolites, including thiocyanate (SCN−) and 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA) in blood. To determine the behavior of these markers following cyanide exposure, a toxicokinetics study was performed in three animal models: (i) rats (250–300 g), (ii) rabbits (3.5–4.2 kg) and (iii) swine (47–54 kg). Cyanide reached a maximum in blood and declined rapidly in each animal model as it was absorbed, distributed, metabolized and …

Electrically Controlled Formation And Release Of Admicelles For Solid Phase Extraction, Sukyeon Lee May 2014

Electrically Controlled Formation And Release Of Admicelles For Solid Phase Extraction, Sukyeon Lee

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Solid phase extraction is one of the most widely used methods to concentrate diluted compounds in a solution. Substances can be extracted into admicelles and hemimicelles, which are surface adsorbed micelles and surfactant monolayers, respectively. Investigations of the electrical control of surfactants on surfaces for the purpose of analyte preconcentration prior to chromatographic analysis are presented. The surfactant layer serves as the “stationary phase” in a solid phase extraction sorbent scenario. Analytes are adsorbed on this layer, and then released from the solid phase via surfactant removal. The attachment and removal of the surfactant are controlled by means of an …
