Development Of Fullerene Based Sturctures For Photovoltaic And Electronic Applications, Amit Palkar Dec 2007

Development Of Fullerene Based Sturctures For Photovoltaic And Electronic Applications, Amit Palkar

All Dissertations

Solar energy can be envisioned as a long term alternative to rapidly depleting fossil fuels. The energy from the sun can be harnessed by constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) type devices where the incident photon induces the transfer of an electron from the donor to the acceptor. If recombination is prevented, this electron can then be channeled through an external circuit, thus leading to the generation of photocurrent. Porphyrins, which are the naturally occurring pigments in photosynthesis, have been widely established as donors while fullerenes, such as C60 and C70 , due to their unique electron accepting properties, have been …

Lithium-Conducting Ionic Melt Electrolytes From Oligomeric Ethylene Glycols: Synthesis And Characterization, Boutros Hallac Dec 2007

Lithium-Conducting Ionic Melt Electrolytes From Oligomeric Ethylene Glycols: Synthesis And Characterization, Boutros Hallac

All Dissertations

Commercial lithium ion cells consist of electrolytes that undergo salt concentration polarization which is acute upon high discharge currents. This type of polarization occurs as a result of the mobility of more than one ionic species in the presence of an electric field. One way to overcome it is by employing a material that would allow the mobility of one ionic species. This thesis will describe the synthesis and characterization of several fluorosulfonimide and fluorosulfonate based ionic liquids/melts as electrolytes having lithium as the only mobile ion. These materials were prepared by the nucleophilic addition reaction of a deprotonated polyether …

Thermodynaimic Study Of Nucleic Acids Recognition By Aminoglycosides , Hongjuan Xi Dec 2007

Thermodynaimic Study Of Nucleic Acids Recognition By Aminoglycosides , Hongjuan Xi

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Since the origin of first aminoglycosides antibiotics, streptomycin, isolated by Selman Waksman about 60 years ago, a number of aminoglycosides antibiotics were discovered to treat different infections. Neomycin class aminoglycosides were found to originally target the A site 16S rRNA in the 30S subunit of the ribosome within the Gram-negative bacteria. In addition to its antibacterial effect, aminoglycosides were also found to binding to various other viral RNA structures such as TAR and RRE of HIV, Group I introns and hammerhead ribozyme, implying its potential to be used as antiviral reagent.

Furthermore, previous studies in our laboratory discovered a …

Study On Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Of Carbon Steel Eroded In Methyldiethanolamine Solution, Dong-Ping Wei, Rong-Zong Hu, Dan-Mei Pan, Wei-Xiong Huang, Rui Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

Corrosion behavior of carbon steel in methyldiethanolamine(MDEA) solution was investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS).The results were showed that the corrosion rate of carbon steel in solution containing dissolved oxygen is higher than that in solution removed of dissolved oxygen before cathodic activation. They were reversed after cathodic activation. The corrosion rate is increased at first and then decreased when the concentration of MDEA is increased in the blank solutions. In the simulated solutions containing quantities of!heat-stable salts(HSS),the corrosion rate is decreased monotonously with increase of the MDEA concentration. As anodic polarization potential is increased, the EIS of carbon steel in HSS simulated solution showed characteristics …

Microcantilever Surface Modification For Chem-/Bio-Sensing, Hongwei Du Oct 2007

Microcantilever Surface Modification For Chem-/Bio-Sensing, Hongwei Du

Doctoral Dissertations

One focus of the microcantilever (MCL) sensing area is to develop a novel surface modification approach to increase the microcantilever bending amplitudes and thus further improve sensitivities. In this dissertation, enzyme incorporated using the Layer by-Layer (LbL) process, LbL deposition of micro-, nano-hydrogel particles and electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of micro-, nano-hydrogel particles were applied to prepare a multilayer or thin hydrogel films on the surface of microcantilevers. Prior to applying to the microcantilevers, LbL and electrophoretic deposition techniques were also applied to gold coated silicon wafer surfaces to investigate the feasibility and deposition behavior using these techniques. The multilayers prepared …

Organic Geochemical Investigation Of A Highly Contaminated Urban Waterway: The Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn, New York, Usa, Michael A. Kruge, Kevin K. Olsen, Eric A. Stern

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Gowanus Canal is an industrial waterway constructed in the mid-19th century by widening and deepening a natural tidal channel. It is ca. 3 km in length and empties into Gowanus Bay, an arm of New York Harbor. Its banks, reinforced by bulkheads and piers, became the site of intensive industrial activity, including oil refining, coal gasification, soap making and tanning. Even though much of the industrial activity along the canal has ceased, its sediments remain highly enriched in organic and inorganic contaminants, with combined sewer outfalls continuing to transport pollutants into the canal. The canal area remains densely …

A Novel Empirical Free Energy Function That Explains And Predicts Protein–Protein Binding Affinities, Joseph Audie, Suzanne Scarlata Sep 2007

A Novel Empirical Free Energy Function That Explains And Predicts Protein–Protein Binding Affinities, Joseph Audie, Suzanne Scarlata

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

A free energy function can be defined as a mathematical expression that relates macroscopic free energy changes to microscopic or molecular properties. Free energy functions can be used to explain and predict the affinity of a ligand for a protein and to score and discriminate between native and non-native binding modes. However, there is a natural tension between developing a function fast enough to solve the scoring problem but rigorous enough to explain and predict binding affinities. Here, we present a novel, physics-based free energy function that is computationally inexpensive, yet explanatory and predictive. The function results from a derivation …

A Computational Chemistry Study Of Spin Traps., Jacob Fosso-Tande Aug 2007

A Computational Chemistry Study Of Spin Traps., Jacob Fosso-Tande

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many defects in physiological processes are due to free radical damage: reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radicals have been implicated in the parthenogenesis of cancer, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis. We herein characterize the phenyl-N-ter-butyl nitrone (PBN) type spin traps in conjunction with the most studied dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) type spin traps using the hydroxyl radical. In this study, theoretical calculations are carried out on the two main types of spin traps (DMPO and PBN) at the density functional theory level (DFT). The energies of the optimized structures, hyperfine calculations in gaseous and aqueous phases of the spin traps …

A Series Of Vertically Integrated Nanotechnology Experiments For The Undergraduate Curriculum, Kevin W. Kittredge, Lesley E. Russell, Michael C. Leopold Jun 2007

A Series Of Vertically Integrated Nanotechnology Experiments For The Undergraduate Curriculum, Kevin W. Kittredge, Lesley E. Russell, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We have designed three nanotechnology experiments that are vertically integrated for an undergraduate chemistry curriculum. They are an evolving set of experiments for sequential courses in an undergraduate chemistry program. These experiments are designed to match the student's level of understanding for each particular course. The participating student is involved in a "research" project that progresses in both theory and experimental technique. Students benefit from these vertically integrated experiments by being involved in multiple facets of a simulated research project. This mimics a traditional research project under an advisor's supervision without the undesired drawback of an unknown outcome.

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical responses to tetracycline at the nickel electrode in alkaline solution were compared with that of gold and glassy carbon electrode by voltammetry. The electrocatalytic oxidation characteristics of tetracycline at nickel electrode were discussed.Subsequently a flow-through amperometric detection cell with nickel as the working electrode was designed to detect tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and doxycycline.Standard calibration graphs for the tetracyclines yielded linear ranges of 0.1~15 mg/L.Detection limits(S/N=3)of 35,45 and 43 μg/L were obtained for tetracycline, oxytetracycline and doxycycline, respectively. The system was applied for the determination of the three antibiotics in single-component drug formulations.

The Glow Discharge - A Multifaceted Optical Emission Source: From Solids Analysis To Metalloproteins, Timothy Brewer May 2007

The Glow Discharge - A Multifaceted Optical Emission Source: From Solids Analysis To Metalloproteins, Timothy Brewer

All Dissertations

Glow discharges (GD) are well known for their application to direct solids elemental analysis of metals and alloys by optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES). The most successful application of GD-OES has been the analysis of solid materials since the GD provides rapid, direct bulk and depth profiling analysis of solids, metals, powders, polymers, glasses and ceramics. However, solids analysis has typically suffered from the lack of true analytical blanks and the inability to study particulate solids in their native state. An approach for the analysis of solid powdered material entrapped in a sol-gel matrix by radio frequency glow discharge optical emission …

Analysis Of Nutraceuticals For Toxic Metals: Development And Validation Of Sample Preparation Method, Julia Cooper

All Theses

With increasing numbers of health-conscious consumers purchasing nutraceutical supplements, total sales in the nutrition industry have soared to over $200 billion in 2006. It is important to assess the safety of these nutraceutical products, with specific regards to toxic metals, including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Because species of these metals may be more toxic than others, they can have hazardous health effects if ingested in excess quantities. The work described in this thesis focuses on the development of a sample preparation method for nutraceutical products, specifically ethanolic tinctures and glycerin-based matrices, and analysis of these products by inductively coupled …

Rank-Ordering Protein-Ligand Binding Affinity By A Quantum Mechanics/ Molecular Mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann-Surface Area Model, Mingliang Wang, Chung Wong Jan 2007

Rank-Ordering Protein-Ligand Binding Affinity By A Quantum Mechanics/ Molecular Mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann-Surface Area Model, Mingliang Wang, Chung Wong

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The authors describe a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann-surface area model for rank-ordering protein-ligand binding affinity in aqueous solution. Unlike many classical continuum electrostatics calculations in which the protein and ligand are treated as a uniform dielectric, this model uses quantum mechanics to explicitly describe the electronic polarization of the ligand by its environment. In solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the authors use the quantum mechanical charge density directly rather than the common point-charge approximation. The authors show that useful results can be obtained by using experimental structure, by choosing a protein dielectric constant that is smaller than that typically used in classical …

An Experiment Using A Simple Photoassisted Fuel Cell Designed To Remediate Simulated Wastewater, John Cassidy, Faisa Touati, Kevin Mcguigan Jan 2007

An Experiment Using A Simple Photoassisted Fuel Cell Designed To Remediate Simulated Wastewater, John Cassidy, Faisa Touati, Kevin Mcguigan

Articles

Work in photochemistry work peaked in the 1980’s where there was the prospect of using sunlight shining on suspensions of titanium dioxide in order to catalytically cleave water into hydrogen and oxygen [1-5]. In this way a clean and efficient method of producing hydrogen as a fuel was envisaged. However, there was a requirement to use a rather high energy light to achieve the splitting and it was not as efficient with visible light[5]. Doped TiO2 layers have been used in a three electrode system for formic acid degradation[6]. In this work, the system uses an electrode coated with TiO2 …

Fast-Scan Cyclic Voltammetry - Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Luis Díaz-Ballote, Mario A. Apuche-Avlles, David O. Wipf Jan 2007

Fast-Scan Cyclic Voltammetry - Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Luis Díaz-Ballote, Mario A. Apuche-Avlles, David O. Wipf

CAS Publications

The use of fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) to generate images in scanning electrochemical microscopy is demonstrated. In the FSCV-SECM method a cyclic voltammogram is acquired at each grid point of the scanned area. Thus, each point in the SECM image is a data array rather than a single value. This provides a significant increase in the amount of data collected per scan and provides the ability to make images of multiple analytes per scan. In addition, the use of cyclic voltammetry allows images based on adsorptive as well as diffusional processes. In this paper, we describe the FSCV-SECM experiment …

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

A screen for antifungal compounds from Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3, a bacterial biological control agent of fungal diseases, has previously led to the isolation of heat-stable antifungal factor (HSAF). HSAF exhibits inhibitory activities against a wide range of fungal species and shows a novel mode of antifungal action by disrupting the biosynthesis of a distinct group of sphingolipids. We have now determined the chemical structure of HSAF, which is identical to that of dihydromaltophilin, an antifungal metabolite with a unique macrocyclic lactam system containing a tetramic acid moiety and a 5,5,6-tricyclic skeleton. We have also identified the genetic locus responsible …

Improved Nitrate Sensing Using Ion Selective Electrodes Based On Urea–Calixarene Ionophores, Benjamin Schazmann, Dermot Diamond Jan 2007

Improved Nitrate Sensing Using Ion Selective Electrodes Based On Urea–Calixarene Ionophores, Benjamin Schazmann, Dermot Diamond

Articles

Urea–calix[4]arenes 1 and 2 were synthesised and incorporated into ISE membranes for assessment as sensors for inorganic anions in water. 1 revealed a strong response to all anions following the Hofmeister selectivity order. For ISEs of 2, the response to a portion of the anion series was suppressed, increasing the margin of selectivity of nitrate over chloride, a common interferant of nitrate in fresh and marine water samples. The performance of ISEs containing 2 was compared to commercially available alkylammonium nitrate ion-exchange salts used for nitrate sensing. Our ISEs performed favourably in terms of sensitivity, linear range and LOD performing …

The Application Of Electrospray Ionization Coupled To Ultrahigh Resolution Mass Spectrometry For The Molecular Characterization Of Natural Organic Matter, Rachel L. Sleighter, Patrick G. Hatcher

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Mass spectrometry has recently played a key role in the understanding of natural organic matter (NOM) by providing molecular-level details about its composition. NOM, a complex assemblage of organic molecules present in natural waters and soils/sediments, has the ability to bind and transport anthropogenic materials. An improved understanding of its composition is crucial in order to understand how pollutants interact with NOM and how NOM cycles through global carbon cycles. In the past, low-resolution (> 3000) mass analyzers have offered some insights into the structure of NOM, but emerging ultrahigh resolution (> 200000) techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled …
