Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Phosphonate-Functionalized Diimide Ligands For Metal-Organic Framework Construction, Kenya Rosas, Jonathan Uribe
Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of Phosphonate-Functionalized Diimide Ligands For Metal-Organic Framework Construction, Kenya Rosas, Jonathan Uribe
Posters - 2026
- Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are solid, porous materials composed of metalions reacted with organic linkers
- MOFs are customizable through variations in their metal ions, organic linkers, and the functional groups of the organic linker all yielding a structure with different properties
- MOFs have a variety of applications, ranging from storage and catalysis to drug delivery
- The synthesis and characterization of four phosphonate-based diimide ligands:
- N,N´-bis(phosphonomethyl)-pyromellitimide (PPMI).
- N,N´-bis(phosphonobenzyl)-pyromellitimide (PPMI-Ph).
- N,N´-bis(phosphonomethyl)-3,3′,4,4′-biphenylenediimide (PBDI).
- N,N´-bis(phosphonobenzyl)-3,3′,4,4′-biphenylenediimide (PBDI-Ph).
- These ligands were then coordinated with zinc or copper metal ions to make MOFs.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, antibiotics decrease in effectiveness as bacteria gain resistance for previously treatable illnesses. Currently, antibiotic susceptibility is typically carried out via the Kirby-Bauer method. Even with automation, this process requires two incubation periods so a less time-consuming technique is desirable. Single entity electrochemistry (SEE) detects changes in current when collisions of individual particles at an ultramicroelectrode (UME) are linked with an electrochemical event. Our group has obtained step-like and spike-like responses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae at the UME surface as a result of adsorption and desorption, respectively. This response is due to the …

Current-time recordings of toluene microdroplets emulsified in water and containing 20 mM Ferrocene (Fc), show multiple electrochemical peaks from oxidation of Fc on disk microelectrodes (5μm-diameter). The average droplet diameter (~0.7 μm) determined from area integration of the peaks was close to Dynamic Light Scattering measurements (~1 μm). Random walk simulations were performed deriving equations to simulate droplet electrolysis using the diffusion and thermal velocity expressions established by Einstein. The simulations show that multiple droplet-electrode collisions, lasting ~0.11 μs each, occur before a droplet wanders away. Updating the Fc-concentration at every collision shows that a droplet only oxidizes ~0.58 % …

Single entity electrochemistry (SEE) is an emerging electroanalytical technique with the ability to push the limit of detection of electrochemical sensors to the single particle level. It measures the change in current over time, making SEE rapid, simple, and cost-effective. The type of current response observed in the scan can provide information about the physiochemical processes underlying the signal. While SEE was originally developed to detect single molecules and nanoparticles, it has been widely applied to micron-sized particles, including emulsion droplets, bacteria, viruses, and mammalian cells. Some recent advances in this technique have focused on the detection of microscopic quantities …

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are nicotine devices that is made up of a power source (battery) and a heating element that both work to stimulate the vaporization of a flavored solution. This is then inhaled by the user. While e-cigarettes lack many of the toxic chemicals in tobacco cigarettes, their effects to human health remain unknown. This study aims to determine whether harmful oxidants are produced in electronic cigarettes using lithium batteries. For this purpose, reactive oxygen species (ROS) reactivity in the disposable components of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) associated with e-cigarette aerosols was analyzed by comparing new lithium ion …

Identification Of “Kratom” (Mitragyna Speciosa) Alkaloids In Commercially Available Products, Julia Grzymkowski, Michelle R. Peace, Justin Poklis
Undergraduate Research Posters
“Kratom” is the common name for the botanical mitragyna speciosa. It is a tree native to Southeast Asia in which leaves contain the psychoactive alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Kratom is often ingested as teas, chewed, or smoked. It acts as a stimulant in small doses and as an opioid in large doses. Overdoses can result in vomiting, seizures, and death. Recently the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) placed Kratom on Schedule 1, but, due to public outcry, it was almost immediately removed.
Eleven kratom based products were obtained from various tobacco shops, “headshops” and via the internet including: Choice brand …
Forensic Chemical Analysis Of Synthetic Cathinones Using Portable Mass Spectrometric Instrumentation, Caitlin N. Cain
Forensic Chemical Analysis Of Synthetic Cathinones Using Portable Mass Spectrometric Instrumentation, Caitlin N. Cain
Undergraduate Research Posters
Forensic laboratories face issues with large backlogs on evidence needing to be analyzed is due to two reasons: budgeting issues and the emergence of designer drugs. Currently, forensic laboratory directors cite that there are a shortage of scientists to deal with the yearly increase in caseloads. Additionally, designer drugs like synthetic cathinones, commonly known as “bath salts,” have increased the backlog due to the changing chemical compositions and misidentification as other compounds. Therefore, the use of a portable mass spectrometer for on-site forensic chemical analysis of synthetic cathinones would reduce the backlog of suspected controlled substances in forensic chemistry laboratories. …

Opioid receptors belong to the large superfamily of seven transmembrane-spanning (7TM) G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). As a class, GPCRs are of fundamental physiological importance mediating the actions of the majority of known neurotransmitters and hormones. The Mu, Delta, and Kappa (MOP, DOP, KOP) opioid receptors are particularly intriguing members of this receptor family as they are the targets involved in many neurobiological diseases such as addiction, pain, stress, anxiety, and depression. Recently we discovered that the aaptamine class of marine sponge derived natural products exhibit selective agonist activity in vitro for the DOP versus MOP receptor. Our findings may explain …
Icp-Oes Analysis Of The Chemical Composition Of Hypergolic Mixtures, Monique Jones
Icp-Oes Analysis Of The Chemical Composition Of Hypergolic Mixtures, Monique Jones
Undergraduate Research Posters
Hypergolic mixtures involve a chemical reaction between an oxidant and a fuel source. These reactions are self-igniting and can be performed using common household materials. The ease of access to the reactants, and delayed ignition have increased the occurrence of hypergolic mixtures in arson-related crimes and incendiary devices. Currently, few chemical signatures exist to link hypergolic residues to a perpetrator. This makes it difficult to obtain forensically relevant information from evidence during an investigation. A hypergolic reaction of interest to forensic laboratories involves combustion between a glycol-based fuel source and potassium permanganate. Past studies have determined that one can distinguish …
