Metal hexacyanoferrate (MeHCF) is a unique material that not only acquired immense research interest in electrochemical sensing field but also possesses potential as energy storage material. As such, the present thesis sought to investigate the facile method to synthesis MeHCF-based nanocomposites and explore its possible applications. First, comparative research on the synthesis of Prussian blue-polypyrrole (PB-PPy) nanocomposite by novel self-assembly (SA) method and conventional electrodeposition technique was performed. In this study, polyaniline (PAni) was synthesized through the chemical oxidation method using aniline (Ani) as a monomer, hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a dopant, and ammonium persulphate (APS) as an initiator. PAni was rendered water soluble through treating with cellulose derivatives. Cellulose derivatives such as methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were used as a stabilizer to improve the solubility of PAni in an aqueous medium. This thesis described the synthesis and characterization of ionic liquid monofunctionalized β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-1-BIMOTs) and ionic liquid difunctionalized β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-2-BIMOTs) for sensor applications. The physical characterizations of these compounds have been conducted using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analyses. These compounds were used as modifiers for carbon paste electrode (CPE). Cyclic voltammetry and chrono-amperometry methods were employed to examine the electrochemical responses of all prepared CPEs. Phytochemical studies on two species of Annonaceae; Goniothalamus tapis and Goniothalamus tapisoides have been carried out. Isolation and purification of the crude extract of stem bark of G. tapis and G. tapisoides yielded seventeen compounds. G. tapis gave nine compounds; goniothalamin 1, isoaltholactone 41, 3-acetylisoaltholactone 151, cheliensisin A 22, garvensintriol 4, goniopyyprone 26, 7-epi-goniofufurone 49, stigmasterol 133 and β-sitosterol 134. Out of nine compounds, 3-acetyl-isoaltholactone 151 was identified as a new styryl-lactone. The skeleton is similar as the major compound, isoaltholactone 41. But 3-acetylisoaltholactone 151 have different functional group compared to hydroxyl group in isoaltholactone 41, which is acetyl group. …

A series of new indole hydrazone Schiff bases and their metal complexes have been synthesized, characterized and evaluated for anti-ulcerogenic activity.The Schiff bases derived from indole-3-acetic acid hydrazide and 2-hydroxyacetophenone and their zinc(II), nickel (II) and copper complexes were synthesized by condensation in ethanol. The IR, 1H and 13C NMR, UV Visible data indicate that the hydrazone ligands are coordinated to zinc metal. The electrodeposition of tin from Tin(II) Methane Sulfonate (MSA) with varying concentration in air and water stable 1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonate, (BMPOTF) ionic liquid at room temperature was studied. Cyclic Voltammetry served to characterize the electrochemical behavior of tin reduction and oxidation. Four Schiff base ligands, N,N’-1,2-benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(5-chlorosalicylideneimine) (H2L1), N,N’-1,2-benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(4-bromosalicylideneimine) (H2L2), N,N’-1,2- benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(4-hydroxysalicylideneimine) (H2L3), and N,N’-1,2-benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylideneimine) (H2L4) were obtained in good yields from the condensation reaction of o-phenylenediamine with 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde, 5-bromosalicylaldehyde, 4-hydroxysalicylaldehyde and 3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylaldehyde respectively. These Schiff bases formed complexes with copper(II), iron(II) and nickel(II) ions in good yields. The structures of these complexes are mainly square planar, which is confirmed by the crystal structure of nickel(II) complex of bis-N,N’-3-chloro-5-bromosalicylideneamine-,2-diaminobenzene. Attempts to prepare the corresponding iron(III) complexes were unsuccessful. A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF MS) technique was used to simultaneously determine six types of carbamates and organophosphorus pesticides residue in vegetables. The pesticides were extracted by ultrasonic solvent extraction method using ethyl acetate as the extraction solvent followed by Florisil column clean up. Four types of common consumed vegetables from local hypermarket were used to study the recovery. The accurate mass measurement and retention time were used to identify and determine the empirical formula of the pesticides. The solvent-extractable hydrocarbons were identified in PM 10 airborne particles and roadside soil particles collected at eight locations in the city center and the suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during the period from November 1998 to January 1999. Airborne particles were collected using high-volume PM1o sampler on glass fiber filters over 24 h average sampling period. After ultrasonic agitation with dichloromethane, the extracts were concentrated and fractionated on an alumina-silica column into three major fractions (aliphatics, aromatics and polar compounds). In this project, two types of the electroanalytical methods have been studied, which are the Differential Pulse Polarography_ (DPP) and Differential Pulse Stripping Voltammetry (DPSV). The DPP mode is used to identify the half-wave potential for the metals, including the lead, cadmium, and zinc. The DPP mode is also used to determine the detection limits for the lead, cadmium, and zinc. Meanwhile, the DPSV mode is used to identify the half-wave potential for the metals. Interference by foreign ions in direct titrimetric determination of sulphate with barium perchlorate using dimethylsulphonazo III (DMSA Ill) as indicator were studied in this research project. The use of certain water miscible solvents as titration medium has enhanced the determination of end-point. Among the methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and acetone used in the investigation, it was found that medium containing 40 to 50% n-propanol or acetone delivered distinct end-points. The effects of nine cations and eight anions were studied in the above sulphate titration. It was found that the interference caused by Li",Na",K",Mg2"·Mn2", Cd2", NH4", CI and Br are not significant. …
