Mechanistic Studies Of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions Involving Antioxidants, Kejie Meng
Mechanistic Studies Of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions Involving Antioxidants, Kejie Meng
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of the research was to investigate proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions involving antioxidants to gain insight into the detailed mechanisms of glutathione (GSH), Trolox, and α-tocopherol (α-TOH). PCET reactions are complex redox reactions that transfer electrons and protons sequentially or in concert. These reactions are ubiquitous in natural or artificial processes that produce electrochemical energy that is extractable as electricity or as chemical fuels of high energy content. Examples of processes based on PCET are photosynthesis, respiration, nitrogen fixation, carbon dioxide reduction, redox fuel cells, and artificial photosynthesis. Antioxidants were selected as a PCET model to understand the …
Characterization Of Coacervate Systems Using Redox Sensitive Dyes, Caleb Kaiser
Characterization Of Coacervate Systems Using Redox Sensitive Dyes, Caleb Kaiser
All Master's Theses
Coacervates are systems that spontaneously form when two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes are mixed in a concentrated salt solution. When coacervates form, a biphasic equilibrium occurs in the sample with two phases present in the solution. The two phases are described as the dense phase and the lean phase, named after the amount of polyelectrolyte material in each phase. Coacervates have been topics of interest to researchers in a variety of fields including biomedical applications, drug delivery devices, and more. This thesis worked towards the characterization of coacervate systems on the molecular level by investigating the interaction of the polyelectrolytes and …

Abnormal Phase Transition Between Two-Dimensional High-Density Liquid Crystal And Low-Density Crystalline Solid Phases, Wenbin Li, Longjuan Kong, Baojie Feng, Huixia Fu, Hui Li, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Kehui Wu, Lan Chen
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
Some two-dimensional liquid systems are theoretically predicted to have an anomalous phase transition due to unique intermolecular interactions, for example the first-order transition between two-dimensional high-density water and low-density amorphous ice. However, it has never been experimentally observed, to the best of our knowledge. Here we report an entropy-driven phase transition between a high-density liquid crystal and low-density crystalline solid, directly observed by scanning tunneling microscope in carbon monoxide adsorbed on Cu(111). Combined with first principle calculations, we find that repulsive dipole–dipole interactions between carbon monoxide molecules lead to unconventional thermodynamics. This finding of unconventional thermodynamics in two-dimensional carbon monoxide …
Carbon Quantum Dots: Bridging The Gap Between Chemical Structure And Material Properties, Timothy J. Pillar-Little Jr.
Carbon Quantum Dots: Bridging The Gap Between Chemical Structure And Material Properties, Timothy J. Pillar-Little Jr.
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are the latest generation of carbon nanomaterials in applications where fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene are abundantly used. With several attractive properties such as tunable optical property, edge-functionalization, and defect-rich chemical structure, CQDs have the potential to revolutionize optoelectronics, electro- and photocatalysis, and biomedical applications. Chemical modifications through the addition of heteroatoms, chemical reduction, and surface passivation are found to alter the band gap, spectral position, and emission pathways of CQDs. Despite extensive studies, fundamental understanding of structure-property relationship remains unclear due to the inhomogeneity in chemical structure and a complex emission mechanism for CQDs.

The Electrochemical Deposition Of Samarium And Europium Dissolved In Ionic Liquid Solvent, Bea Martinez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Rare-earth elements include the lanthanide series in the periodic table with the addition of scandium and yttrium. China produces approximately 95% of the world’s rare-earths supply and is the largest consumer of the world’s rare earth supply. Domestic production of rare-earth metals is a priority in the US. The domestic demand for rare-earth elements is largely based on their use in electronic devices, catalytic converters, and more importantly defense applications. Therefore, China’s monopoly of rare-earth elements is viewed as a threat to national security. Although capital investments have resulted in an increase in domestic mining and refining of rare-earth materials, …

No relationship has been established between surface wettability and ice growth patterns, although ice often forms on top of solid surfaces. Here, we report experimental observations obtained using a process specially designed to avoid the influence of nucleation and describe the wettability-dependent ice morphology on solid surfaces under atmospheric conditions and the discovery of two growth modes of ice crystals: along-surface and off-surface growth modes. Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulation analysis, we show that these distinct ice growth phenomena are attributable to the presence (or absence) of bilayer ice on solid surfaces with different wettability; that is, the formation of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study mainly focuses on the fabrication of single one dimensional (1D) NP chains across the 5-micron gap of Au two electrode devices (TED). This has been achieved by electrochemical deposition of Ag onto the two electrodes, soaking the TED in 0.1 M Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide for 2-3 hours, and then close monitoring of the current as a function of time while a voltage across the two Ag coated Au electrodes in air. One dimensional Ag nanoparticle chain formation occurred by oxidation of Ag to Ag+ at the positive electrode followed by movement of Ag+ ions to the …

Cathodic Electrochemiluminescence Of Meso-Tetra(4-Sulfophenyl)Porphyrin/Potassium Peroxydisulfate System, Yan-Fenga Wang, Dia Luo, Duo-Liang Shan, Xiao-Quan Lu
Journal of Electrochemistry
A new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system in aqueous solution was constructed by using meso-tetra(4-sulfophenyl)porphyrin (TSPP) as a luminophoreand potassium peroxydisulfate (K2S2O8) as a reductive–oxidative coreactant. Upon sweeping from 0 V to -1.5 V, two cathodic ECL peaks were found simultaneously. One appeared at -0.8 V, which is corresponding to the reduction of TSPP, another at -1.2 V, that is attributed to the reduction of K2S2O8. And methylene blue could quench the ECL of TSPP effectively. In accordance with the linearity between quenching efficiency and the concentration of methylene blue, a method to determine methylene blue was established. The ECL mechanism was …

Ice recrystallization is of great importance to both fundamental research and practical applications, however understanding and controlling ice recrystallization processes remains challenging. Here, we report the discovery of an ion-specific effect on ice recrystallization. By simply changing the initial type and concentration of ions in an aqueous solution, the size of ice grains after recrystallization can be tuned from 27.4±4.1 to 277.5±30.9 mm. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the ability of the ion to be incorporated into the ice phase plays a key role in the ultimate size of the ice grains after recrystallization. Moreover, by using recrystallized ice crystals …

Homogeneous Ligand-Centered Hydrogen Evolution And Hydrogen Oxidation : Exploiting Redox Non-Innocence To Drive Catalysis., Andrew Z. Haddad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogen is a promising carbon-free fuel / energy carrier and is an essential building block for many industrial and agricultural processes. Rising energy demands have ignited interest in the development of carbon-free and carbon neutral energy sources. In this context, hydrogen is an attractive candidate—being energy-dense, carbon-free—and easily accessible through a two-electron reduction of water. Accordingly, many electrochemical homogeneous catalyst systems have been studied, with a focus on understanding the mechanism of hydrogen evolution proceeding through metal-hydride intermediates. However, there has been a renaissance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst design, with many groups implicating ligand redox non-innocence as a …

Electrochemical Time Of Flight For Rapid And Direct Measurement Of Diffusion Coefficients, Jonathan C. Moldenhauer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The determination of diffusion coefficients is of fundamental importance to the understanding of electrochemistry and sensors. Developing a method by which diffusion coefficients of Red/ox active analytes can be determined quickly and elegantly, would be a great advancement over presently accepted methods. This dissertation reports the reviving electrochemical time of flight (ETOF), and developing a method that allows for empirical determination of diffusion coefficients from a single measurement. ETOF is a generate and detect experiment where the time an electrochemically generated species takes to transit a known distance is measured and related to the diffusion coefficient of the species. The …

Resistive-Pulse Analysis Of Single Phospholipid Vesicles Using Quartz Nanochannels, Jonathan T. Cox, Bo Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
We report the uses of resistive-pulse method and quartz nanochannels for the detection and size analysis of single vesicles. Cylindrical shape quartz nanochannels have been used to detect single phospholipid vesicles ranging from 100 to 300 nm and polystyrene nanoparticles ranging from 170 to 400 nm in diameter. Translocations of single vesicles and nanoparticle were detected as individual square current pulses, which could be used to determine particle size. Our results show excellent agreement between the particle/vesicle sizes obtained from nanochannels and those from dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This electronic-based method was found to be …

Electrografting Of Mono-N-Boc-Ethylenediamine From An Acetonitrile/Aqueous Nahco3 Mixture, Hamzah Hisham, Denuault Guy, Bartlett Philip, Pinczewska Aleksandra, Kilburn Jeremy
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electrografting of primary amines to carbon electrodes is now widely employed for electrode modification. Using a mixture of acetonitrile and 0.1 mol⋅L-1 aqueous sodium hydrogen carborate (NaHCO3) in the ratio of 4:1, the efficiency for coupling of mono-N-Boc-ethylenediamine (EDA-Boc) on the surface of glassy carbon was significantly improved as compared with that obtained using acetonitrile alone. In the presence of NaHCO3 the initial current determined in the cyclic voltammogram became higher, and the layer of attached amine was formed more rapidly, accordingly, the electrode was passivated more rapidly. The resulting film of EDA-Boc was shown …

Bromophenol blue is a common pH indicator and dye used in many different industries. Once a solution of bromophenol blue is placed in a concentrated basic solution, the color fades from a blue/violet color to clear solution with a pH of 4.6 or greater. The rate law of the reaction is analyzed through the use of a small footprint visible-near-infrared spectrometer (Vis-NIR) with a diode array detector. An absorbance wavelength of 590 nm as a function of time was collected using Ocean Optics OceanView software. The results contained in the data collection file are exported to a spreadsheet for further …

Anthropogenic activities contribute benzene, toluene, and anisole to the environment, which in the atmosphere are converted into the respective phenols, cresols, and methoxyphenols by fast gas-phase reaction with hydroxyl radicals (HO(•)). Further processing of the latter species by HO(•) decreases their vapor pressure as a second hydroxyl group is incorporated to accelerate their oxidative aging at interfaces and in aqueous particles. This work shows how catechol, pyrogallol, 3-methylcatechol, 4-methylcatechol, and 3-methoxycatechol (all proxies for oxygenated aromatics derived from benzene, toluene, and anisole) react at the air-water interface with increasing O3(g) during τc ≈ 1 μs contact time and contrasts their …

The variable composition of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) contributes to the large uncertainty for predicting radiative forcing. A better understanding of the reaction mechanisms leading to aerosol formation such as for the photochemical reaction of aqueous pyruvic acid (PA) at λ ≥ 305 nm can contribute to constrain these uncertainties. Herein, the photochemistry of aqueous PA (5-300 mM) continuously sparged with air is re-examined in the laboratory under comparable irradiance at 38° N at noon on a summer day. Several analytical methods are employed to monitor the time series of the reaction, including (1) the derivatization of carbonyl (C═O) functional …

Direct Electrochemistry Of Glucose Oxidase Based On Ws2 Quantum Dots And Its Biosensing Application, Chen-Lu Li, Hua-Ping Peng, Zhong-Nan Huang, Yi-Lun Sheng, Pei-Wen Wu, Xin-Hua Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this study, a novel electrochemical glucose biosensor has been developed by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx) on tungsten disulfide quantum dots (WS2 QDs) on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were employed to characterize the morphology, structure, and electrochemical behaviors of the as-prepared WS2 QDs and the biofilm modified electrode. The results suggested that the WS2 QDs could accelerate the electron transfer between the electrode and the immobilized enzyme, which enabled the direct electrochemistry of GOx without any electron mediator. Besides, the immobilized GOx in WS2 QDsfilm …

Application Of Adamantane Schiff Base Nickel Complexes/Graphene Oxide/Glassy Carbon Modified Electrode In Detection Of Carmine, Peng Guo, Zheng Liu, Hai-Ying Li, Li-Ming Ma
Journal of Electrochemistry
The Schiff base nickel complexes/graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrodes were prepared by embedded method and electrodeposition on which were used to quantitatively detect the contents of carmine. Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and other methods were employed to characterize properties and morphologies of the modified electrodes. The results show that the adamantane double Schiff base nickel complexes/graphene oxide/glassy carbon electrode had high electric catalytic activity toward carmine oxidation reaction, and might provide an easy and quick way to detect carmine content with good reproducibility.

In the recent Correspondence, Professor Henrik Grönbeck made several comments on the recently developed grand unified model (GUM), in particular using the ligand-protected gold cluster [Au25(SR)18]1− as an example. We noted that the latter cluster can be viewed as belonging to a special group of ligand-protected gold clusters that contain one or several icosahedral Au13 motifs. For this group of clusters, a secondary block Au13(8e) has been identified as a more convenient way to describe their structure anatomy and evolution. Another extension of the GUM is the identification of the new elementary …

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have a lower melting point than each of their individual components due to ion dipole interactions or hydrogen bonding. Traditionally, DES are used for processing metals through plating and have many synthesis applications. DES are able to be substituted for hazardous solvents that are traditionally used for metal plating and synthesis. This, along with many other advantageous properties, appear promising for the use of DESs as solvents or for use in electrochemical systems, particularly at low temperatures. Choline chloride:propylene glycol was a novel DES synthesized and analyzed for its properties, including melting point, viscosity, conductivity, heat …

Approaches Toward Novel 1,2,3-Triazole Sensors For The Detection Of Anions And Heavy Metal Cations, Richard D. Govan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Cations and anions play pivotal roles in biological and physiological processes, however an imbalance in concentration of any ion can be detrimental. Therefore, research into the selective recognition of anions and heavy metal cations has acquired much attention. One approach involves the use of chemosensors. Upon interaction with targeted analytes, chemosensors produce a distinct response, in some cases a fluorescent or colorimetric signal. The 1,2,3-triazole unit has much potential as a chemical sensor due to its unique photophysical properties. The specificity, selectivity, and signaling mechanism of triazole sensors can be tuned with conjugation in the motif and choice and placement …

We carry out Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamic simulations to show that the reaction between the smallest Criegee intermediate, CH2OO, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at the air/water interface can be observed within few picoseconds. The reaction follows both concerted and stepwise mechanisms with former being the dominant reaction pathway. The concerted reaction proceeds with or without the involvement of one or two nearby water molecules. An important implication of the simulation results is that the Criegee-H2S reaction can provide a novel non-photochemical pathway for the formation of a C–S linkage in clouds and could be a …

Semiconductor Photocatalysis: Mechanisms, Photocatalytic Performances And Lifetime Of Redox Carriers, Ruixin Zhou
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Photocatalytic reactions mediated by semiconductors such as ZnS, TiO2, ZnO, etc. can harvest solar energy into chemical bonds, a process with important prebiotic and environmental chemistry applications. The recycling of CO2 into organic molecules (e.g., formate, methane, and methanol) facilitated by irradiated semiconductors such as colloidal ZnS nanoparticles has been demonstrated. ZnS can also drive prebiotic reactions from the reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle such as the reduction of fumarate to succinate. However, the mechanism of photoreduction by ZnS of the previous reaction has not been understood. Thus, this thesis reports the mechanisms for heterogeneous photocatalytic reductions …

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Fluorescence microscopy is a powerful tool for interpreting the structure and function of biomolecules, and their interactions with one another. Understanding fundamental biological mechanisms is important to the development of improved treatments for a variety of diseases. Fluorescent tags are used to track the motion and longevity of such events, with the ability to monitor several biomolecules at once. Currently, many of these studies are conducted using bulk measurements, or several biological events at the same time, because the added light from several emitters can more easily overcome the high fluorescence background inherent to biological systems. Although important in their …

An Stm Study On The Structure Of Pt(100)/Ionic Liquid Omipf6 Interface, Jin Peng, Mian-Gang Li, Li-Qiang Xie, Jia-Wei Yan, Bing-Wei Mao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Potential-dependent structures of Pt(100)/ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (OMIPF6) interface have been studied by electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (ECSTM). The cation OMI+ forms ordered structure on Pt(100) surface, which exists in a potential region of about 1.2 V. When the potential is more negative than -0.6 V, it can be seen that the ordered structure transforms to disordered structure. When the potential shifts positively to +0.6 V, the desorption of cations OMI+ occurs, which indicates that strong electrostatic repulsion is needed to overcome chemical interaction between OMIPF6 and Pt(100) surface, leading to the desorption. The above results …
