Journal of Electrochemistry

The methanol and ethylene glycol electrooxidation on palladium electrode in acidic solution has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroelectrochemistry. It shows that the oxidation of methanol and ethylene glycol at Pd electrode cannot proceed until over 1.5 V in acidic and neutral media. The overpotential decreases and the peak current density increases with the reduction in pH values. The formation of the oxygen-containing species significantly affects the alcohol oxidation on Pd electrode. The in situ FTIR spectroscopic measurements show that the oxidation products of ethylene glycol on Pd electrode are CO2 and oxalic …

Nitric oxide (NO) is a freely diffusible, gaseous free radical, associated with many physiological and pathological processes that include neuronal signaling, immune response, and inflammatory response. NO is produced from L-arginine in an NADPH-dependent reaction catalyzed by a family of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes. A deficiency in NO plays a role in hypertension, hyperglycaemia, and arteriosclerosis, among other pathological states. Conversely, increased NO levels contribute to arthritis, septic shock, and hypotention. Therefore, measuring and quantifying NO production in biological systems and matrices may be vital in elucidating physiological and pathological processes. The goal of this work is to develop …

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important intercellular messenger that acts in many tissues to regulate a diverse range of physiological and pathological processes. The physiologically implications of NO function are far from being completely understood. The multifaceted reactivity of NO prompted the need for accurate determination of the concentration of this molecule. However, it is difficult to detect nitric oxide, particularly in biological media and near live cells due to its short half-life, a result of its reactivity and the low levels of NO produced in vivo. As a result, the accurate and reliable detection of NO under varying experimental …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Glucose On Nano Pt/C Electrode, Cui-Lian Chen, Xiao-Lan Wei, Pei Kang Shen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Nano Pt/C electrocatalysts were prepared by intermittent microwave heating method. The electrooxidation of glucose on smooth Pt and~Pt/C electrodes has been studied and compared. The results showed that the electrochemical properties on nano Pt/C were improved due to the reduction of the overpotential and the increase in the kinetic rate. The surface area would be significantly increased when the particle size of the catalyst was reduced to nano-scale,resulting in the increase in the activity. The enhancement in the resistance to poisoning could be explained that the oxygen-containing species are easier to react with poisoning species on nano Pt/C and re-active the electrode.

The Mechanism Of Electrocatalytic Reduction Of Oxygen On Manganese Dioxide, Yu-Liang Cao, Han-Xi Yang, Xin-Ping Ai, Li-Fen Xiao

Journal of Electrochemistry

The oxygen electroreduction on the MnO2 electrode was investigated by analysis of the polarzation properties of oxygen reduciton and its dependence on MnO2 discharge state, in combination with the characterization of discharge intermediate and the kinetic parameters of the oxygen reduction. Based on the experimental observation and mechanistic analysis, it was suggested that the reduction of oxygen was closely related to the discharge behaviors of MnO2. When MnO2 was electrochimically reduced to MnOOH, it was immediately oxidized by oxygen molecules. Thus the oxygen reduction proceeds through continuous oxidation of the discharge product of MnO2 …

How Can Direct Mthanol Fuel Cell Benefit From Carbonate Media, Lin Zhuang, Yang Wang, Jun-Tao Lu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The kinetics of methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction in 0.5 mol/L K2CO3 were compared with those in 0.5 mol/L H2SO 4. Experiments revealed that carbonate media could be more beneficial to direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC). Firstly, both electrode reactions show better performance in the carbonate than in the acid; secondly, materials other than noble metals become possible to be used as the anodic and cathodic catalysts; thirdly, the potential dectease caused by methanol crossover could be depressed by using metal oxide catalysts not stable in acid, such as MnO2.
