Toxicity Of Tio2 Nanoparticles In Cucumis Sativus, Fabiola Moreno-Olivas^, Isaac Montes, Alia D. Servin, Hiram Castillo-Michel, José R. Peralta-Videa, Jorge L. Gardea-Torresdey*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide range of applications in medicine, electronics, catalysis, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. TiO2 NPs are very stable and can be transported and dispersed into aquatic environments. Several animal species have shown negative reaction to TiO2 NPs. However, little is known about their toxicity on plants, specially their possibility to enter the food chain via the crops utilized or subsequent production steps. We have studied the possible genotoxic effects of TiO2 NPs on cucumber (Cucumis sativus), a worldwide cultivated species that serves as food for insects and other animals in the food web. Seven-day old hydroponically …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Since the discovery of C60 many different allotropes of carbon have been found, isolated and researched. Of particular interest, Ugarte et al in 1992 first reported the observation of onion-like structures known as carbon nano onions (CNOs). They consist of concentric fullerene cages separated by the same distance as the layers of graphite. These carbon nanoparticles can be obtained from either arc discharge of graphite under water or by thermal annealing of nanodiamonds. Through the annealing process using the nanodiamonds, 6 to 8 layer onions can be obtained on average.
It has been demonstrated that multi-walled nanotubes (MWNT) can be …
Synthesis Of Pyridine-Based Ligands As Potential Magnetic Liquid Crystals, Jacqueline Gamboa Varela^, Jose E. Nunez*
Synthesis Of Pyridine-Based Ligands As Potential Magnetic Liquid Crystals, Jacqueline Gamboa Varela^, Jose E. Nunez*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Ligands for the development of metallomesogens (metal-containing-liquid-crystals) have attracted attention due to potential applications in materials science such as optical devices, magnetic switches, and conductors. The attempts to synthesize bis(3-alkoxy) pyridine amines are presented. These structures are designed to exhibit liquid crystalline properties as metal complexes. Reaction conditions using potassium carbonate and potassium tert-butoxide as bases under Ullmann-type conditions in various solvents (aromatic and non-aromatic), between -78 ⁰C to 160 ⁰C, have been unsuccessful. It is imperative to understand the electronic effects of the meta-substituted pyridine precursors to further develop the copper-catalyzed conditions of these types of molecules.

Bis( N, N-Dipheny-3-Pyridineamine) Tungsten Complex As Molecular Gyroscope, Verenice Ramirez^, Jose E. Nunez*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
In recent years, the interest in molecular machines has increased based on inspiration from macroscopic machines, such as gyroscopes applied in racecar engines and arrays of gyroscopes in automatic pilot functions. The same concept has been taken down to the nanoscopic level as molecular machines in solution like bevel gears and turnstiles, but for application use they must be in the solid state. Gyroscope molecules can exhibit fast rotation and the aim is to design free rotation in the crystal lattice that maintains volume conserving motion. Bis(N,N-diphenyl-3-pyridinamine) tungsten complex was prepared by irradiation of tungsten hexacarbonyl in the presence of …

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Organochlorine Pesticides (OCs) are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). They have been found to bioaccumulate in organisms over time. These chemicals tend to attach to fatty tissues in animals and humans, remaining for long periods of time. OCs may be responsible for a vast number of health conditions including neurological disorders, endocrine disruption, reproductive dysfunctions, and possible linkage to cancer. OCs such as DDT, DDE and DDD are banned, however, they have still been detected in environmental samples worldwide. The main objective of this study is to investigate the presence of DDT, DDE and DDD in cow milk using …

Metal Carbonyl Catalysts For The Transformation Of Silicon Hydrides To Siloxanes In The Presence Of Dmf, Eduardo Cervantes^, Renzo Arias Ugarte, Hemant K. Sharma, Keith H. Pannell*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
It has recently been reported that, upon photochemical irradiation, tertiary silanes (R3SiH) react with DMF to form disiloxanes (R3Si-O-SiR3) and Me3N, using the transition metal alkyl complex (η5-C5H5)Fe(CO)2Me as a catalyst. Intermediates of the type R3SiOCH2NMe2 were proposed as the important first step via a hydrosilylation reaction but no evidence was obtained for this suggestion. By changing the catalyst to Mo(CO)6 we have now observed that not only do we form the expected disiloxanes, but for the first …

Novel Photochemical Methodologies For Diversity Oriented Synthesis And Screening Of Combinatorial Libraries, Roman Askatovich Valiulin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The main goal of this project was to develop an efficient methodology allowing rapid access to structurally diverse scaffolds decorated with various functional groups.
Initially, we discovered and subsequently developed an experimentally straightforward, high-yielding photoinduced conversion of readily accessible diverse starting materials into polycyclic aldehydes and their (hemi)acetals decorated by various pendants. The two step sequence, involving the Diels-Alder addition of heterocyclic chalcones and other benzoyl ethylenes to a variety of dienes, followed by the Paternò-Büchi reaction, was described as an alkene-carbonyl oxametathesis. This methodology offers a rapid increase in molecular complexity and diversity of the target scaffolds.

Mechanistic Importance Of Redox Potentials And Conformational Flexibility In Electron-Transferring Flavoproteins, Michael Anthony Swanson
Mechanistic Importance Of Redox Potentials And Conformational Flexibility In Electron-Transferring Flavoproteins, Michael Anthony Swanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The mitochondrial matrix flavoproteins electron transfer flavoprotein (ETF) and electron transfer flavoprotein-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (ETF-QO) are responsible for linking fatty acid β-oxidation with the main mitochondrial respiratory chain. Electrons derived from flavoprotein dehydrogenases are transferred sequentially through ETF and ETF-QO to ubiquinone and then into the respiratory chain via complex III. In this study, the effects of changes in ETF-QO redox potentials on its activity and the conformational flexibility of ETF were investigated.
ETF-QO contains one [4Fe-4S]2+,1+ and one flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). In the porcine protein, threonine 367 is hydrogen bonded to N1 and O2 of the flavin ring …

The three California cities of San Jose, Fresno and West Los Angeles (wLA) were visited during March 2008 to collect on-road emission measurements of reactive nitrogen compounds from light-duty vehicles. At the San Jose and wLA sites comparison with historical measurements showed that emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitric oxide (NO) continue to decrease in the on-road fleet yet the ratio of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) to NO in new diesel vehicles appears to be under going large increases. A small fleet of 2007 diesel ambulances measured in Fresno was found to have more than 60% …

As part of the National Park Service’s Temporary Winter Use Plans Environmental Assessment, the University of Denver has been collecting in-use tailpipe emissions data from snowcoaches and snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park. During the winter of 2006, using a portable emissions monitoring system, tailpipe data were collected from 10 snowcoaches and 2 four-stroke snowmobiles. These vehicles were operated over a standard route within the park, and the snowcoaches all carried identical passenger loads. These snowcoaches were newer in age with more advanced fuel management technology than those studied earlier, and average emissions were lower as a result (120, 1.7, and …

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
A multi-year, on-road emission measurement program carried out in the cities of Chicago, IL, Denver, CO, Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ shows large, fuel specific tailpipe emissions reductions at all of the sites for carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitric oxide (NO). CO emissions decrease between 56% (Denver) and 71% (Chicago), HC emissions decrease between 27% (Phoenix) and 63% (Denver) and NO emissions have dropped between 48% (West LA) and 68% (Chicago). Three observed factors common to all of the sites are that the emission reductions are occurring in vehicles of all ages, that the influence of engine …
