The Use Of Hallucinogens In The Treatment Of Mental Health Disorders, Brianna Gagen May 2022

The Use Of Hallucinogens In The Treatment Of Mental Health Disorders, Brianna Gagen

Honors College Theses

The percent of people with mental health disorders in the United States have skyrocketed over the past decade. With stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health and the symptoms associated with it, often those that are suffering do not receive sufficient treatment, as they might with a physical illness. The current, common treatment options for common psychological disorders, like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, are sometimes not effective in patients, due to resistance or poor response outcomes. Consequently, in order to research alternative therapeutic approaches for mental health disorders, scientists are researching the effects of several hallucinogenic drugs in …

Design And Synthesis Of Thiazole-Based Small Molecules To Inhibit The Inflammatory Cytokine Oncostatin M, Samuel Randall May 2022

Design And Synthesis Of Thiazole-Based Small Molecules To Inhibit The Inflammatory Cytokine Oncostatin M, Samuel Randall

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The body’s innate ability to produce an inflammatory response due to tissue irritation or damage is essential for growth and survival. The inflammatory response can be triggered by numerous stimuli, including physical trauma, inhalation of dangerous debris (such as silica and asbestos), tobacco/alcohol consumption, microbiota, diet, and other lifestyle stressors. In a well-orchestrated inflammatory response, the circulatory system increases blood flow and capillary permeability in the inflamed area to deliver nutrients, white blood cells, and inflammatory mediating molecules. However, a dysregulated inflammatory response can lead to chronic inflammation. Emerging evidence continues to frame oncostatin M (OSM) as a pro-inflammatory cytokine …

Colloidal Monolayers For Concentration Light In Ultra-Thin Semiconductor Layers, Rachel Cherry May 2022

Colloidal Monolayers For Concentration Light In Ultra-Thin Semiconductor Layers, Rachel Cherry

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Thin film semiconductors are used as photoconductive absorber layers for the development of broadband terahertz generation. Using a femtosecond laser pulse, the generation of a transient increase in the conductivity occurs by photoexciting conduction band electrons in the semiconductor. These thermalize through the emission of terahertz radiation. The route to terahertz generation is not particularly efficient as significant losses come from the absorption in the substrate that is beneath the photoconductive antenna layer. This work explores the application of hexagonally close-packed monolayers of chemically synthesized nanospheres as a potential light concentration method for ultra-thin films of GaAs and black phosphorus …

Design And Synthesis Of Novel Synthetic Cannabinoid 5-Hydroxy-1h-Indazole-3-Carboxamide Metabolites, Nichole Ann Pianovich

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Since the discovery of Δ9-THC, the pharmaceutical industry has continuously developed synthetic analogs intending to develop compounds that exhibit the bioactivity of natural cannabinoids but are devoid of its psychoactivity. Synthetic cannabinoids often exhibit potencies significantly greater than Δ9-THC, as do their metabolites. Phase I metabolism of synthetic cannabinoids bearing an indazole core predominantly proceeds through oxidative transformations to produce mono-hydroxylated variants of the parent compound. Recent studies have primarily focused on N-1/C-3 hydroxylated pentyl side chains and carboxamide linked groups. These compounds often retain affinity and potency for the CB1 receptor …

Diffusion Of A Salt In An Aqueous Media, Aldaly Pineda Hernandez May 2022

Diffusion Of A Salt In An Aqueous Media, Aldaly Pineda Hernandez

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Diffusion is defined as the net transfer of a molecule from a high concentration region to a low concentration region. The concept of diffusion is used in a very important process called "desalination." Desalination is a separation process used to reduce the salt content dissolved in brackish water to make it suitable for human consumption, irrigation, and industrial use.

In desalination plants, it is important to monitor the constantly changing salt content of water, partly due to the diffusive effect. The main purpose of this experiment was to study the diffusion of NaCl in water at two NaCl concentrations. The …

Understanding Interfacial Reactions Initiating On Electrode Materials For Energy Storage Technologies, Jingnan Li May 2022

Understanding Interfacial Reactions Initiating On Electrode Materials For Energy Storage Technologies, Jingnan Li

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Since the first generation of lithium-ion batteries featured lithium cobalt oxide cathode and carbon anode commercialized in the 1990s, the high-capacity materials with lower cost are in demand to further increase the battery energy density. Lithium metal and silicon anode are promising high-capacity anode materials to achieve next-generation lithium batteries. However, both the materials actively react in electrolytes and suffer from dramatic volume change. Therefore, a reliable passivation layer at the electrolyte/electrode interphase (i.e., solid electrolyte interphase, or “SEI”) is required to support the long-term cycling of both materials. Cetrimonium hydro fluoride (CTAHF2) has been proposed and synthesized as an …

Screening Of Near-Ir Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (Sers) Dyes Using Quick Freezing-Induced Aunp Aggregates (Qfiaas)., Carleigh A. Cimmerer May 2022

Screening Of Near-Ir Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (Sers) Dyes Using Quick Freezing-Induced Aunp Aggregates (Qfiaas)., Carleigh A. Cimmerer

Forensic Science Master's Projects

Near-IR (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an emerging bioimaging technique that can be a safe alternative with a resolution better than current bioimaging techniques, such as MRI, CT, and PET. These can be hazardous with long-term exposure due to powerful magnetic fields or ionizing radiation. The success of NIR SERS bioimaging lies partially in the selection of highly sensitive NIR Raman reporters, which is essential to achieve highly resolved bioimaging of the body system. NIR Raman dyes must satisfy three important conditions: strong absorption in the NIR region, strong binding to the surfaces of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and excellent …

Compatible Blends Of N-Type Polymer Semiconductors: Impact On The Morphology And Mechanics Of Flexible Optoelectronics, Zachary C. Ahmad

Honors Theses

Conjugated polymers offer the potential for the development of robust, low-cost electronics, but achieving high mechanical deformability and high charge transport simultaneously in polymer semiconductors remains a significant challenge. In this work, blends of conjugated polymers were investigated to elucidate the influence of compatible conjugated blends on polymer morphology, mechanics, and electrical properties (using a partially conjugated polymer as the soft matrix and a fully conjugated polymer as the electrically active component). This work achieves a fundamental understanding of blend morphology for these similar components by establishing the framework for how they deform with strain. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) …

Role Of E168d In M. Tuberculosis Igps Catalysis, Hedda Booter

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a bacterium that affects the lungs and causes tuberculosis, infecting over 10 million people worldwide each year. Owing to the organism’s evolving drug resistance, existing antibiotics no longer combat the disease. The need to discover new drug targets has never been greater. Previous findings suggest that the protein IGPS (indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthase) in M. tuberculosis (MtIGPS) may be a target in the treatment of the disease. MtIGPS catalyzes the fourth step in the tryptophan biosynthetic process. The ability to create their own tryptophan is a major advantage that many bacteria have. The role of E168, in the …

Lipid Rafts, Exosomal Vesicles And Anti-Giardial Therapies, Brian Ivan Grajeda

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite, is a major cause of waterborne infection, worldwide. While the trophozoite form of this parasite induces pathological symptoms in the gut, the cyst forms transmit the infection via contaminated water. Since Giardia is a non-invasive parasite, the actual mechanism by which it causes infection remains elusive. We have previously reported that Giardia assembles cholesterol and GM1 glycolipid-enriched lipid rafts (LRs) that participate in encystation and cyst production. To further delineate the role of LRs in pathogenesis, we isolated LRs from Giardia and subjected them to proteomic analysis. Various cellular proteins including the virulent proteins—e.g., giardins, …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Single particle electrochemical oxidation of polyvinylpyrrolidone-capped silver nanoparticles at a microdisk electrode is investigated as a function of particle shape (spheres, cubes, and plates) in potassium nitrate and potassium hydroxide solutions. In potassium nitrate, extreme anodic potentials (≥ 1500 mV vs Ag/AgCl (3 M KCl)) are necessary to achieve oxidation, while lower anodic potentials are required in potassium hydroxide (≥ 900 mV vs Ag/AgCl (saturated KCl)). Upon oxidation, silver oxide is formed, readily catalyzing water oxidation, producing a spike-step current response. The spike duration for each particle is used to probe effects of particle shape on the oxidation mechanism, and …
