Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Of Benzene With A Superacid Catalyst, Josh T. Cutright
Friedel-Crafts Alkylation Of Benzene With A Superacid Catalyst, Josh T. Cutright
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Long-chain alkylbenzenes are industrially synthesized precursors to commercial surfactants such as laundry detergent. The currently used catalysts in the processes of their synthesis are corrosive and harmful to the environment. These problems can be avoided utilizing heterogeneous highly acidic catalysts. Solid catalysts do not corrode equipment and are relatively simple to remove from the post-reaction mixture. Phosphotungstic acid (PTA) supported on silica gel could be a possible catalyst due to its high acidity with an estimated pKa ≈ -13. The catalyst PTA-SiO2 was prepared via the sol-gel method to covalently embed it in a silica support. The catalyst was …
Nitrogen Doping Of Electrochemically Activate Carbon Screen-Printed Electrodes, Ethan Galloway
Nitrogen Doping Of Electrochemically Activate Carbon Screen-Printed Electrodes, Ethan Galloway
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Screen printed electrodes (SPEs), which are prepared by patterning conductive inks or pastes onto an insulating support (e.g., plastic film), are widely employed as sensing and biosensing platforms due to their ease of fabrication and relatively low cost. This is especially applicable to electrodes of this nature prepared with carbon-based inks (SPCEs). To date, the most successful and significant commercial application of SPEs has been as test strips for glucose meters. Despite the maturity of this technology, SPE research remains very active as improvements in sensitivity and selectivity, which often involve modifying the electrode surface, hold the key to advancing …

Rhodococcus bacteria have many secondary metabolic pathways that may produce novel natural products. The bacterium Rhodococcus strain KCHXC3 was isolated from a soil sample collected near Kingsport, Tennessee and was found to produce an inhibitory compound active against a broad array of bacterial species, including the Gram negative pathogen Shigella sonnei. The aim of this research is to extract and purify the compound for future structure elucidation. A mixture of compounds from 3 month old agar plates inoculated with strain KCHXC3 was extracted using ethyl acetate. The crude extract was then partially purified utilizing a Sephadex LH-20 column, followed …
Synthesis And Function Of Ion-Selective Single-Molecule Fluorescent Imaging Molecules And Materials, Alena A. Denisenko
Synthesis And Function Of Ion-Selective Single-Molecule Fluorescent Imaging Molecules And Materials, Alena A. Denisenko
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Neutrinos are fermion subatomic particles that interact only by weak subatomic forces—making them almost impossible to detect. However, they can be produced in specific radioactive decay reactions, such as beta decay. We hypothesize the detection of double beta decay through the tagging of the Ba2+ daughter ion from 136Xe (136Xe —136Ba2+ + 2ν + 2β). The proposal is to develop single-molecule fluorescence imaging (SFMI) technology to investigate gaseous chemical constituents in high-pressure gases (ca. 30-150 psi) at gas-solid interfaces. To achieve proper SMFI, heterogenous self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing fluorophores that operate under dry conditions and are turned on when a …

Chronic wounds pose a major problem in the United States with an estimate of twenty-five million dollars a year spent on associated treatments. Growth factors can be used as a potential treatment for chronic wounds since they promote cell proliferation and angiogenesis. This study employs one specific growth factor, fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) so that it could potentially be used in future treatment. Wild-type FGF2 is thermally unstable, and it has a mean elimination time of 7.6 hours. This study attempted to improve upon its stability through a mutation on the heparin binding loop. The mutation performed was K134E. …
Design & Analysis Of Mixed-Mode Integrated Circuit For Pulse-Shape Discrimination, Bryan Orabutt
Design & Analysis Of Mixed-Mode Integrated Circuit For Pulse-Shape Discrimination, Bryan Orabutt
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
In nuclear science experiments it is usually necessary to determine the type of radiation, its energy and direction with considerable accuracy. The detection of neutrons and discriminating them from gamma rays is particularly difficult. A popular method of doing so is to measure characteristics intrinsic to the pulse shape of each radiation type in order to perform pulse-shape discrimination (PSD).
Historically, PSD capable systems have been designed with two approaches in mind: specialized analog circuitry, or digital signal processing (DSP). In this work we propose a PSD capable circuit topology using techniques from both the analog and DSP domains. We …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Bovine mastitis, caused by a wide array of pathogens, results in a substantial economic loss for the dairy cattle livestock industry. β-defensins are a part of the bovine’s innate immune system and act as the first line of defense against mastitis. Only foundational research has been done on β-defensins’ ability to treat and prevent mastitis. There have been no analytical methods reported in the literature for analyzing β-defensins in bovine milk. This research aims to create an analytical approach to determine β-defensins in bovine milk. It is challenging to determine an analyte in a complex sample matrix, and milk is …

Investigation Of The Cellular Uptake And Cytotoxicity Of Ruthenium(Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes As A Function Of Lipophilicity, Matthew Guerrero
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes have been one of the focal points of investigation for inorganic anti-cancer drugs, as they are robust enough to remain chemically intact in vivo and many show potent cytotoxicty. In particular, the RPC [Ru(dip)3]2+, where dip is 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, is noted for its high cytotoxicity (IC50 ~2-5 uM) across a broad spectrum of cancer cell lines and more recently has been implicated as targeting microtubules, which is an unusual target for metal-based drugs. While the cellular uptake for [Ru(dip)3]Cl2 is among the highest seen for RPCs, its solubility in water or buffer is limited and problematic. In order …

F420-dependent glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (FGD) from Mycobacteria tuberculosis, catalyzes a reaction the conversion of glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) to 6-phosphogluconolactone using the oxidized F420 cofactor, which is reduced to F420H2. The reaction is important within M. tuberculosis, the cause of tuberculosis disease (TB) due to its health relevance for treatment of multiple drug resistant and extreme drug resistant strains of M. tuberculosis. TB affects millions of people worldwide, and although treatable, multiple drug resistant and extreme drug resistant forms of TB adds strain on the current generation of drugs. Since this enzyme is not found in humans, is an ideal drug target. A …

The discovery and ability to provide an absolute concentration of biomarkers in the body can facilitate early diagnoses of diseases. This information can also be used for more accurate and unique treatments for those patients. While major advances in molecular mass spectrometry allows for a sensitive identification of these biomarkers, they are limited to only four orders of magnitude in their dynamic ranges. Due to this, detection and quantitation of low abundant proteins, which tend to make up these vital biomarkers, is very difficult. On the other hand, ICP-MS offers a wider dynamic range (up to 12 orders of magnitude) …

In recent years, the introduction of redox- and photoactive components have yielded stimuli-responsive electronic and photonic MOFs and expanded their utility in molecular electronics and energy storage devices/technologies.
Chapter one describes the light-harvesting ability of a porphyrin-based MOF. Herein, we have demonstrated spontaneous solvothermal growth of [100]-oriented uniform pillared-porphyrin framework-11 (PPF-11) …
Designing And Decoding Chemical Bonds: A Computational Pipeline Backed Up By Magnetic Criteria And Experiment, Nikita Fedik
Designing And Decoding Chemical Bonds: A Computational Pipeline Backed Up By Magnetic Criteria And Experiment, Nikita Fedik
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
You may find plenty of definitions of chemistry but all of them, explicitly or not, are centered around chemical bonds. When we say “chemical properties”, “reactivity”, “stability”, “structure” etc., we have in mind chemical bonds and their reorganization which almost completely defines the behavior of the matter. Why some materials are ultrahard and can cut through steel while others are so soft that you can form them with your bare hands? You probably have already guessed that it occurs because their chemical bonding is very different. Although the elemental composition could be the same! In this Dissertation, we report results …

PURPOSEDisparities in radiation oncology (RO) can be attributed to geographic location, socioeconomic status, race, sex, and other societal factors. One potential solution is to implement a fully mobile (FM) RO system to bring radiotherapy to rural areas and reduce barriers to access. We use Monte Carlo simulation to quantify techno-economic feasibility with uncertainty, using two rural Missouri scenarios.METHODSRecently, a semimobile RO system has been developed by building an o-ring linear accelerator (linac) into a mobile coach that is used for temporary care, months at a time. Transitioning to a more FM-RO system, which changes location within a given day, presents …

Ketone Hydrosilylation Studies Using A Carbodiphosphorane Catalyst, Liam Sullivan, Allegra Liberman-Martin
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The objective of this research is to discover an effective, safe, and low-cost catalyst for ketone hydrosilylation reactions, which involve the addition of a silicon–hydrogen bond across a C=O double bond. Improving catalyst efficiency could benefit the organic synthesis industry, as carbonyl hydrosilylation is used industrially in the synthesis of alcohol products. Use of the carbodiphosphorane catalyst as a replacement for toxic heavy-metal-containing catalysts could reduce waste and emissions harmful to the environment, while also providing an alternative means for accomplishing ketone reduction. Using a cyclic carbodiphosphorane catalyst, we have compared catalytic activity toward acetophenone hydrosilylation for a range of …

Implications Of Metal Coordination In Damage And Recognition Of Nucleic Acids And Lipid Bilayers, Ana Dreab
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Metal ions have a myriad of biological functions from structural stability to enzymatic (de)activation and metabolic electron transfer. Redox-active metals also mediate the formation of reactive oxygen species which may either cause oxidative damage or protect cellular components. Computational modeling is used here to investigate the role of (1) metal-ion binding to antimicrobial peptides, (2) metal-ion removal and disulfide formation on zinc finger (ZF) proteins, and (3) coordination of thiones/selones for the prevention of metal-mediated redox damage.
Piscidins, natural-occurring antimicrobial peptides, efficiently kill bacteria by targeting their membranes. Their efficacy is enhanced in vitro by metal-binding and the presence of …

Tuning Nanoscale Molecular Heterogeneity To Improve Co2 Transport And Binding In Co2 Capture Solvents, Omar Avina
Tuning Nanoscale Molecular Heterogeneity To Improve Co2 Transport And Binding In Co2 Capture Solvents, Omar Avina
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Aqueous amine-based technology has been considered the most promising carbon capture solution for post-combustion gas from fossil fuel plants. However, solvent degradation and the high energy cost associated with removing CO2 from the solvent, known as regeneration, have hindered its widespread implementation. It has been proposed that utilizing a water lean solvent, in contrast to aqueous amines, can decrease the required heat to regenerate the solvent. Additionally, Malhotra et al. proposed that controlling the viscosity can help increase the mass transport properties of CO2 in the solvent. A recent study on CO2 binding organic liquids (CO2BOLs) found them to exist …

Long-Term Trends And Variability Of Pm₂.₅ Mass, Chemical Components, And Sources Over Nys, Hesham Abdelmonem Hassan
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Eighteen years of ambient PM2.5 mass and major components are used in this study to harmonize the carbonaceous fraction of PM2.5 data, and to examine long-term trends and seasonal variability changes. The major decreasing trend of PM2.5 mass and major inorganic ions reflects the ambient concentration response to clean air regulations and policies.Although elemental carbon shows a decreasing trend in agreement with most other PM2.5 components, organic carbon shows a different behavior of no-trend to slightly increasing trend in some sites. Organic carbon behavior indicates the growing role of non-combustion sources at the expense of decreasing combustion sources. Seasonal trends …

Theoretical Studies Of Benzoquinone Reactivity In Acidic And Basic Environments, Natali Majoras
Honors Theses
Quinones are a class of organic compounds containing a six-membered unsaturated ring with two carbonyl groups. They are biologically relevant mostly due to their ability to participate in redox reactions. Prior experiments in our lab showed that quinones can induce protein modifications that are pH dependent. In an acidic environment the modifications were less significant than in a basic environment. Previous computational studies have also been carried out to model, in neutral solutions, the reaction between various quinones and various amines. Various amine groups are used as a model for the amino group of lysine to represent protein modification. The …

Poly(pyrazolyl)borates are very popular ligands in organometallic chemistry due to their attractive properties. It is easy to modify the steric and electronic properties of these ligands by changing the pyrazolyl substituents. Fluorinated tris(pyrazolyl)borates are used to stabilize many reactive metal ions. The metal complexes of them are used for multiple applications. These ligands are extensively used to isolate and stabilize many coinage metal complexes (Cu, Ag, and Au). We have synthesized comparably less explored fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and utilized them to isolate several π-ligands (olefin, alkyne, and cyclopropene) complexes of copper(I) and silver(I). Chapter 2 of this research work focuses …
Investigation Of The Binding Domain Interfaces Of The C-Terminus Of The Albino3 Insertase And The 43kda Chloroplast Signal Recognition Particle Subunit Via Single Molecule Förster Resonance Energy Transfer, Amanda Tomanek

Fluorescent labeling is a technique used for visualizing functional groups contained in biomolecules by fluorescence imaging. This technique was used in this project to analyze post-translational targeting of light-harvesting chlorophyll-binding proteins (LHCP), which are the core complexes that harvest sunlight to drive photosynthetic electron transfer. This protein is synthesized in the cytosol and post-translationally targeted to the stroma of chloroplasts. CpSRP43 is a signal recognition particle (SRP) subunit unique to chloroplasts, which has been shown to interact with the stroma-soluble C-terminus of the thylakoid-bound Albino3 insertase (Alb3-Cterm). In the chloroplast stroma, targeting to thylakoids is performed via the cpSRP pathway …
