This study describes the synthesis, characterization, and application of a new $p-$sulfonatocalix[4]arene-based silica resin (calix-resin 5) for the extraction of selected metals, namely Pb, Cd, Co, Ni, Cu and Fe, from canola oil. Synthesis, morphology, purity, and elemental composition of calix-resin 5 were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The metal extraction efficiency of calix-resin 5 was evaluated through the batch-wise method with a flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer following the wet acid digestion procedure. The results obtained showed that the newly fabricated adsorbent material calix-resin 5 is an efficient adsorbent and exhibits great …
Analysis Of Electrochemical Noise In Nicd Batteries Throughout Their Lifetime, Burak Ülgüt
Analysis Of Electrochemical Noise In Nicd Batteries Throughout Their Lifetime, Burak Ülgüt
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Electrochemical noise measurements have been applied to electrochemical systems that show stochastic behavior. The standard area of study that benefits from this stochastic analysis is localized corrosion modes like pitting and crevice corrosion. Application of electrochemical noise measurements to battery systems, though rare, is recently becoming more popular. The present contribution first establishes a method of analyzing electrochemical voltage noise data for NiCd batteries, then follows four samples of batteries in terms of voltage noise throughout their lifetimes. The noises exhibited by battery systems are small, but finite. This noise is expected to be due to variations in the electrochemistry …

Nitric oxide is one of the most important biochemical parameters in biological processes; it is also known as carcinogenic. There is need for the design of stable and durable solid phase nitric oxide sensors. In this study, we immobilized the nitric oxide sensitive molecules pyrene, tris(2,2'-bipyrdyl)dichlororuthenium(II) hexahydrate (Ru(bipy)$_{3}^{2+})$, and magnesium phthalocyanine (Mg-Pc) for the first time in polymeric or glassy matrices. We applied silver nanoparticles and ionic liquids in the fabrication process of polymeric electrospun fibers and thin films. We compared their NO sensitivity in micelle solutions that mimic the cell medium by both steady state and lifetime-based fluorescence measurements. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This study presents the synthesis of glucose-based surfactants including quaternary ammonium salts. Their surface properties and influence on the soil environment were investigated. The synthesized quaternary ammonium chlorides of glucose-based ester exhibited good surface tension reduction properties and formed stable foam in contact with water. The results showed that quaternary ester ammonium salts affect the activation of metals (nickel and cadmium) from the soil matrix after their introduction into the soil environment. This phenomenon can increase the bioavailability of these metals. The introduction of glucose surfactants to the soil increased microorganism activity, which may indicate that these compounds were used …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Our focus in this study is on the design and synthesis of a light-responsive peptide-based nanocarrier in order to develop effective and biocompatible drug delivery systems. The synthesized nanocarrier is basically composed of peptide amphiphiles comprising a micelle forming a Pro-Pro-Pro-Lys-Lys-Lys peptide sequence with an attached anthracene fluorophore. Anthracene containing an inner core of the micelle can serve as a storage site for poorly water-soluble drugs. Moreover, anthracenes that come in close proximity with the formation of micellar structures can undergo photodimerization upon irradiation at 365 nm, which disrupts the micelle structures formed by the self-assembly of the peptide amphiphiles. …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In the present study, calcined layered double hydroxides (CLDHs) were obtained by heating [Zn$_{2}$-Al-CO$_{3}$] at 500 $^{\circ}$C. The adsorption of the textile dye acid green 1 (AG1) by CLDH was carried out at different pH levels, adsorbent--adsorbate contact times, and AG1/CLDH mass ratios. Equilibrium at room temperature was reached after 24 h, which was confirmed by the kinetic modeling of the experimental data by the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption is described by a Langmuir-type isotherm. The comparative study of adsorption isotherms in calcined and uncalcined phases reveals that the former could be a good candidate for trapping such pollutants. After …

Phase Transition Of Chemically Synthesized Fept Nanoparticles Under High Pressure, Telem Şi̇mşek, Özgür Karci, Şadan Özcan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
We present the results of a study related to phase transformation of chemically synthesized FePt nanoparticles under high pressure from face-centered cubic into face-centered tetragonal structure. As-synthesized nanoparticles are around 4.5 nm and show superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K. After annealing under 60 bar pressure of hydrogen at 400 $^{\circ}$C for 2 h, nanoparticles exhibit strong ferromagnetic behavior with 5391 Oe coercivity. Results show that high-pressure annealing lowers the decomposition temperature of the surfactants surrounding nanoparticles and partially hinders agglomeration arising from heat treatment. The promising ferromagnetic properties of the FePt nanoparticles after annealing under high pressure make them suitable …

Two novel N$\wedge $O-type Schiff base ligands and the corresponding Co(II) complexes are reported. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the complexes are potential molecular precursors for the fabrication of cobalt and cobalt-containing nanomaterials. The significant difference in the thermal decomposition profiles is recognized as an influence of structural differences on the complexes. Thus, the complexes were thermally decomposed using the melt and hot injection methods to examine the properties of the obtained cobalt and cobalt sulfide nanoparticles, respectively. The reaction parameters employed during the fabrication processes, in addition to structural differences, influenced the morphological and crystallographic phases and magnetic properties of …

Poly L-Dopa/Poly(Ethylenedioxythiophene) As A Novel Mussel-Inspired Electroactive Binder For Environmentally Friendly Hybrid Supercapacitors, Elham Heydaripour, Mohammad Reza Nateghi, Mohammad Hossein Mosslemin
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
3,4-Dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine and ethylenedioxythiophene were chemically copolymerized via an oxidative process in aqueous solution. The copolymer was used as a novel mussel-inspired electroactive binder in conjunction with a nickel-based metal organic frame work for fabrication of environmentally friendly supercapacitors. The binder, in addition to the sticking effect, contributes to electric charge storing via the redox process of catechol moieties of poly(3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine) and also the formation of a high charge-storing double layer due to the presence of poly(ethylenedioxythiophene). Cyclic voltammetry, charge/discharge measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectrometry showed that the hybrid supercapacitors based on Ni-benzidine MOF with the new electroactive binder exhibit very …

Synthetic Strategies Towards The Carbenoid Reactions Of $\Alpha ,\Beta $-Acetylenic Carbonyls, Füsun Şeyma Kişkan, Emre Özgüz, Olcay Anaç, Nurdan Tarakçi, Gökçe Merey
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Catalytic reactions of $\alpha ,\beta $-conjugated carbonyl compounds have been a practical tool towards the synthesis of different useful heterocyclic compounds. Despite the numerous reactions with carbon-carbon double bond conjugated carbonyls, reactions of acetylenic carbonyls are limited. In this study, efficient dioxole synthesis was carried out via acetylenic aldehydes and butadiene formation was preferred over cyclopropene formation via acetylenic esters as different functional groups on these substrates change the product distribution. Both reaction conditions (such as solvent and temperature) and electrophilic structure of metal carbenoids alter the product distribution; acceptor (A), donor-acceptor (DA), and acceptor-acceptor (AA) functionalized diazo compounds yield …

The hydrogen bond donating ability of 1,8-naphthalenediol was investigated via a series of $^{1}$H, $^{13}$C, and $^{31}$P NMR experiments. Complexation studies using triphenylphosphine oxide and cyclohexanone as hydrogen bond acceptors revealed that 1,8-naphthalenediol is a more effective hydrogen bond donor compared to 1-naphthol and 8-methoxy-1-naphthol. Afterwards, its effectiveness as a hydrogen bonding catalyst was demonstrated in the Friedel-Crafts-type addition reaction of indole to trans-$\beta $-nitrostyrene.

Pyrimidine derivatives are well known due to their remarkable pharmacological potential in various fields of science, and they are also present in some natural substances like DNA and RNA. These scaffolds manifest diversified biological activities such as antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, anti-HIV, antitubercular, antitumor, antineoplastic, and antimalarial. A pyrimidine ring is constructed when chalcones, amidines, guanidine, nitriles, isocyanates, urea, thiourea, and aminopyrazoles undergo condensation, coupling, or cyclization reactions. In this context, the present review illustrates a variety of novel and efficient synthetic approaches towards the synthesis of pyrimidine and its derivatives that were reported recently.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A new series of acetamide derivatives containing 1,2,4-triazole and azinane moieties has been synthesized and characterized using $^{1}$H NMR, $^{13}$C NMR, IR, and EI-MS spectroscopic analysis. The intermediate triazole was synthesized through a sequential synthesis of carboxylate and carbohydrazide. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding of the newly synthesized 1,2,4-triazole derivatives was evaluated along with thermodynamics, site-selective binding, and synchronous study. The results obtained by BSA binding as well as thermodynamic studies justify that all the compounds show spontaneous interaction with BSA and could be effectively distributed and eliminated from the body. Therefore, the triazole-based analogs might be a useful …

Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, And Computational Studies Of 2-Cyano-6-Hydroxybenzothiazole: A Key Synthetic Intermediate Of Firefly Luciferin, Ghasem Shahmoradi, Saeid Amani
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Firefly luciferin is widely applied as a biotechnological tool for visualizing various biological processes in vitro and in vivo. Chemically, 2-cyano-6-hydroxybenzothiazole, as a key synthetic intermediate of firefly luciferin, is obtained from 2-cyano-6-methoxybenzothiazole by changing the methoxy with a hydroxy group. However, this approach is costly and not suited for large-scale synthesis. Here we report cost-effective and efficient syntheses of 2-cyano-6-hydroxybenzothiazole through the catalytic Sandmeyer-type cyanation reaction. Our approach employs diazonium tetrafluoroborate salt of 2-amino-6-hydroxybenzothiazole as a cyanation substrate. The cyanation reaction proceeds efficiently under mild conditions by using Cu(I)/Cu(II)/N,N,N\textquotesingle,N\textquotesingle-tetramethylethylenediamine as a catalyst. In addition, computational studies of the 2-cyano-6-hydroxybenzothiazole …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A series of new extensively conjugated $E$-stilbene azomethines (5a-5h) were synthesized and screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The compounds were tested against bacterial (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis) and fungal strains (Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, and Trichoderma harzianum) using the agar well diffusion method. Among the tested compounds, $N$'-(4-nitrobenzylidene)-2-(($E)$-styryl)benzohydrazide (5g) was found to possess potent antimicrobial activity higher than some drugs with significant activity reported in the literature, e.g., cefradine and terbinafine hydrochloride. Additionally, compounds 5a-5h were also evaluated for antioxidant potential using DPPH free radical scavenging and ferric thiocyanate (FTC) assays. Among these, …

The partial substitution of potassium atoms by strontium atoms in initial matrix K$_{3}$Fe$_{2}$(PO$_{4})_{3}$ with formation of complex phosphates K$_{3-2x}$Sr$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$(PO$_{4})_{3}$ ($x =$ 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25) was determined using a solid-state reaction method. According to powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, the prepared phosphates with $x =$ 1.0 and 1.25 crystallize in a cubic system (space group ${P2}_{1}$3) and belong to langbeinite family compounds, while for the sample with $x =$ 0.75 a mixture of langbeinite-type phase and a minor amount of K$_{3}$Fe$_{2}$(PO$_{4})_{3}$ was obtained. The decreasing trend of lattice parameter $a$ with increase of Sr amount in the phosphate confirmed the …
