Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

GTP cyclohydrolase I catalyzes the first step in folic acid biosynthesis in bacteria and plants, biopterin biosynthesis in mammals, and the biosynthesis of 7-deazaguanosine modified tRNA nucleosides in bacteria and archaea. The type IB GTP cyclohydrolase (GCYH-IB) is a prokaryotic-specific enzyme found in a number of pathogens. GCYH-IB is structurally distinct from the canonical type IA GTP cyclohydrolase involved in biopterin biosynthesis in humans and animals, and thus is of interest as a potential antibacterial drug target. We report kinetic and inhibition data of Neisseria gonorrhoeae GCYH-IB, and two high-resolution crystal structures of the enzyme; one in complex with the …

The Problem Of The Anode Electrolyte In H-Type Electrolytic Cell For Electrochemical Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide, Rui Zhang, Wei-Xin Lv, Li-Xu Lei

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) was studied in the H-type electrolytic cell. It was found that the voltage between the cathode and the anode would increase during the long time electrolysis process, for this reason the electrolytic process would be unsustainable. After the experimental investigations carried out by constant potential electrolysis, constant current electrolysis, pH test and KHCO3 concentration analysis of anode electrolyte before and after the electrolysis, the increase in cell voltage might be caused by the following process: H+, that was generated from the anodic oxygen evolution reaction, reacted with HCO3 …

Thiophene-1,1-dioxide (TDO) oligomers have fascinating electronic properties. We previously used thermopower measurements to show that a change in charge carrier from hole to electron occurs with increasing length of TDO oligomers when single-molecule junctions are formed between gold electrodes. In this article, we show for the first time that the dominant conducting orbitals for thiophene/ TDO oligomers of fixed length can be tuned by altering the strength of the electron acceptors incorporated into the backbone. We use the scanning tunneling microscope break-junction (STM-BJ) technique and apply a recently developed method to determine the dominant transport channel in single-molecule junctions formed …

Electrochemical Synthesis Of Porous Polyaniline Electrodes Using Hkust-1 As A Template And Their Electrochemical Supercapacitor Property, Qiong Luan, Chun-Feng Xue, Hong-Ye Zhu, Fu-Juan Yang, Xu-Li Ma, Xiao-Gang Hao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Excellent electrode plays vital important role in the performance of supercapacitors. Polyaniline (PANI) with good conductivity is often used to prepare electrode. However, its available surface is limited and results in a poor supercapacitance in many cases. It is desirable to fabricate an electrode containing electroactive PANI with high surface area deriving from its porous structure. Here, the metal-organic framework (MOF) material with high surface area was selected as a hard template for synthesizing porous PANI. Microporous PANI composite electrodes (Micro-PANI/CC) were fabricated by depositing aniline on to carbon cloth (CC) pre-coated with MOF material of HKUST-1 using a unipolar …

Preparations Of Mno2 Reference Electrodes For Corrosion Monitoring Of Reinforced Concrete, Li Yang, Bing Xu, Hai Wang, Ze-Hua Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, the solid reference electrode was assemblied by using the electrochemically synthesized manganese dioxide (MnO2) (EMD) powder, gel electrolyte and thin mortar layer for the durability evaluation of concrete. The EMD reference electrode exhibited higher potential stability (< 10 mV drift) than the chemically synthesied MnO2 (CMD) based on half year potential tests in the saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and hardened mortar. In addition, the EMD electrode was almost insensitive to the presences of chloride ion and corrosion inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance and polarization curves indicate that the EMD electrode had lower charge transfer resistance, higher exchange current density and lower temperature coefficient than the …

Aligning Electronic Energy Levels On The Anatase Tio2(101) Surface, Jun-Jie Zhao, Jun Cheng

Journal of Electrochemistry

As one of the most commonly-used materials for photocatalysis and solar energy conversion, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively studied for more than 40 years. Its photoelectrochemical activity crucially depends on the band positions at the interface. In this work, the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) of a model TiO2 surface are computed using the standard work function method at the level of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) density functional, which are then converted to the scale of the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) by subtracting the absolute SHE potential. Comparing with the rutile TiO2(110) …

Effect Of Pressure On Ion Selectivity In Biomimetic Nanopores With Ph-Tunable Polyelectrolyte Brushes, Hui-Xia Shan, Zhen-Ping Zeng, Li-Xian Ye, Feng Shu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Biomimetic ionic channels of synthetic nanopores functionalized with pH-tunable polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes have significant application potentials for active transport control of ions, fluids, and bioparticles on the nanoscale. Ion selectivity is an important phenomenon of ion transport in nanofluidic devices, which has great theoretical significance and practical values. We propose a pressure control scheme to control the ion selectivity in biomimetic nano-systems with pH-tunable PE brushes. Effects of the solution properties (i.e., pH and background salt concentration), the applied voltage and pressure on ion selectivity are comprehensively investigated. The results show that ion selectivity is sensitive to pressure. Unlike the …

Excited-State Dynamics Of The Thiopurine Prodrug 6-Thioguanine: Can N9-Glycosylation Affect Its Phototoxic Activity?, Brennan Ashwood, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández

Faculty Scholarship

6-Thioguanine, an immunosuppressant and anticancer prodrug, has been shown to induce DNA damage and cell death following exposure to UVA radiation. Its metabolite, 6-thioguanosine, plays a major role in the prodrug's overall photoreactivity. However, 6-thioguanine itself has proven to be cytotoxic following UVA irradiation, warranting further investigation into its excited-state dynamics. In this contribution, the excited-state dynamics and photochemical properties of 6-thioguanine are studied in aqueous solution following UVA excitation at 345 nm in order to provide mechanistic insight regarding its photochemical reactivity and to scrutinize whether N9-glycosylation modulates its phototoxicity in solution. The experimental results are complemented with time-dependent …

Hydroalkynylation Of Oxocarbenium Intermediates Via Au(I) Catalysis, Courtney Smith Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Au(I) catalysis has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the realization of a broad range of organic transformations. Despite this rapid development, attaining selectivity and maintaining catalyst stability remain significant challenges. Rational ligand design, such as the employment of NHC or TA ligands, has been used to confront these issues. This thesis focuses on the use of Au(I) catalysts bearing these ligands for the selective hydroalkynylation of enol ethers. By employing a TA-Au stabilized catalyst, [(OAr)3PAu(TA-H)]OTf, the intermolecular hydroalkynylation of enol ethers, a substrate that is well-known to promote decomposition of the gold cation, was efficiently achieved. …

Due to the atmospheric abundance and chemical complexity of water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), its contribution to the hydration behavior of atmospheric aerosol is both significant and difficult to assess. For the present study, the hygroscopicity and CCN activity of isolated atmospheric WSOC particulate matter was measured without the compounding effects of common, soluble inorganic aerosol constituents. WSOC was extracted with high purity water from daily high-volume PM2.5 filter samples and separated from water soluble inorganic constituents using solid-phase extraction. The WSOC filter extracts were concentrated and combined to provide sufficient mass for continuous generation of the WSOC-only aerosol …

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have significant environmental and public health impacts. In this study, we demonstrate that EPFRs formed on ZnO nanoparticles provide two significant surprises. First, EPR spectroscopy shows that phenoxy radicals form readily on ZnO nanoparticles at room temperature, yielding EPR signals similar to those previously measured after 250°C exposures. Vibrational spectroscopy supports the conclusion that phenoxy-derived species chemisorb to ZnO nanoparticles under both exposure temperatures. Second, DFT calculations indicate that electrons are transferred from ZnO to the adsorbed organic (oxidizing the Zn), the opposite direction proposed by previous descriptions of EPFR formation on metal oxides.

Fluorocarbene, Fluoroolefin, And Fluorocarbyne Complexes Of Rh, Christopher Pell, Yanjun Zhu, Rafael Huacuja, David Herbert, Russell Hughes, Oleg Ozerov

Dartmouth Scholarship

The manuscript reports the synthesis, characterization, and analysis of electronic structure in a series of complexes of small perfluorocarbon ligands with the (PNP)Rh fragment (where PNP is a diarylamido/bis(phosphine) pincer ligand). Reactions of (PNP)Rh(TBE) as the source of (PNP)Rh with CHF3 and C2HF5 produced perfluoroalkylidene complexes (PNP)RhCF2 and (PNP)RhC(F)(CF3). (PNP)RhCF2 could also be obtained via the reaction of (PNP)Rh(TBE) with Me3SiCF3/CsF, with an admixture of (PNP) Rh(C2F4), where TBE = tert-butylethylene. Abstraction of fluoride from these neutral (PNP)RhCxFy complexes was successful, although only abstraction from (PNP)Rh]CF2 allowed unambiguous identification of the Rh product, [(PNP)Rh CF] +. DFT computational studies allowed …

Organic semiconductors have attracted considerable attention due to their applications in low-cost (opto)electronic devices. The most successful organic materials for applications that rely on charge carrier generation, such as solar cells, utilize blends of several types of molecules. In blends, the local environment strongly influences exciton and charge carrier dynamics. However, relationship between nanoscale features and photophysics is difficult to establish due to the lack of necessary spatial resolution. We use functionalized fluorinated pentacene (Pn) molecule as single molecule probes of intermolecular interactions and of the nanoscale environment in blends containing donor and acceptor molecules. Single Pn donor (D) molecules …

The Application Of Stress Induced Optimization Algorithm: The Role Of Hydroxyl Groups In Inter-Chain Interactions In Cellulose Iα And Iβ, Raoul Geoffrey Noumbissi Siewe

Student Theses and Dissertations

Complex networks of hydrogen bonds within the cellulose Iα and Iβ contribute greatly to cellulose’s anisotropic physical properties. The inter-chain hydrogen bonding interactions through hydroxyl groups are isolated in each of the three lattice planes of the adjacent chains within the unit cell of two allomorphs of natural cellulose. In our density function theory study with dispersion corrected Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE-D2) functional, these hydroxyl groups participate in strong hydrogen bonding interactions (-24.8 kcal/mol for Iα and Iβ) in the side-to-side lattice plane. Unexpectedly, the hydroxyl groups also participate significantly in hydrogen bonding interactions (-11.0 and -12.4 kcal/mol for cellulose Iα and …

We describe how the unique temporal and spectral characteristics of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) can be utilized to follow chemical transformations in heterogeneous catalysis in real time. We highlight the systematic study of CO oxidation on Ru(0001), which we initiate either using a femtosecond pulse from an optical laser or by activating only the oxygen atoms using a THz pulse. We find that CO is promoted into an entropy-controlled precursor state prior to desorbing when the surface is heated in the absence of oxygen, whereas in the presence of oxygen, CO desorbs directly into the gas phase. We monitor the …

Solvent Chemistry In The Electronic Cigarette Reaction Vessel, Robert Paul Jensen, Robert M. Strongin, David H. Peyton

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Knowledge of the mechanism of formation, levels and toxicological profiles of the chemical products in the aerosols (i.e., vapor plus particulate phases) of e-cigarettes is needed in order to better inform basic research as well as the general public, regulators, and industry. To date, studies of e-cigarette emissions have mainly focused on chromatographic techniques for quantifying and comparing the levels of selected e-cigarette aerosol components to those found in traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes heat and aerosolize the solvents propylene glycol (PG) and glycerol (GLY), thereby affording unique product profiles as compared to traditional cigarettes. The chemical literature strongly suggests that there …
