Mqct. I. Inelastic Scattering Of Two Asymmetric-Top Rotors With Application To H2O + H2O, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov Jul 2017

Mqct. I. Inelastic Scattering Of Two Asymmetric-Top Rotors With Application To H2O + H2O, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A mixed quantum/classical theory (MQCT) for the inelastic collision of two asymmetric-top rotor molecules is developed. In this method, the quantum state-to-state transitions between the rotational states of molecules (internal) are treated quantum mechanically using the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, whereas their relative translational motion (responsible for scattering) is treated classically, using the average trajectory approach. Two versions of the formula for transition matrix elements are presented: a straightforward approach that uses numerical multidimensional quadrature over all the internal degrees of freedom and a more standard analytic approach that uses the expansion of the PES over the basis set of spherical …

Exploring Two Approximate Coupling Models In Exciton Transport, James Irish-Ryan Jul 2017

Exploring Two Approximate Coupling Models In Exciton Transport, James Irish-Ryan

DePaul Discoveries

Point dipole and line dipole coupling approximations are two methods for approximating the transition dipole coupling between two conjugated organic molecules. Transition dipole couplings are an important factor in determining energy transfer between two non-covalently-bonded molecules. Transition dipole couplings were mathematically calculated by two methods, applying the point dipole and line dipole approximations. The calculations were implemented using Octave, an open source computer programming language. Using this tool, software was created to efficiently analyze the differences between transition dipoles calculated using the two methods, for a variety of relative orientations of two model conjugated organic molecules. Custom-built software was created …

Once inorganic electron acceptors are depleted, organic matter in anoxic environments decomposes by hydrolysis, fermentation, and methanogenesis, requiring syntrophic interactions between microorganisms to achieve energetic favorability. In this classic anaerobic food chain, methanogenesis represents the terminal electron accepting (TEA) process, ultimately producing equimolar CO2 and CH4 for each molecule of organic matter degraded. However, CO2:CH4 production in Sphagnum-derived, mineral-poor, cellulosic peat often substantially exceeds this 1:1 ratio, even in the absence of measureable inorganic TEAs. Since the oxidation state of C in both cellulose-derived organic matter and acetate is 0, and CO2 has …

Diversifying Homogenous Au(I)-Catalysis Through New Reaction Discovery, Stephen Motika

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Homogenous Au(I)-catalysis has become a valuable synthetic tool to activate a host of unsaturated carbon functional groups towards nucleophilic addition. Over the course of the past two decades, many have embarked on new journeys within this field. Notably, the advancements in this field hinge on the development of new ligand systems that impart novel reactivity at the metal. Our group has focused on this area, as we have successfully demonstrated the utility of 1,2,3-triazoles as ligands for gold and a host of other transition metals and Lewis acids. With respect to gold catalysis, these ligands enhance the stability of the …

Unraveling The Coulombic Forces In Electronically Decoupled Bichromophoric Systems During Two Successive Electron Transfers, Maxim V. Ivanov, Shriya Wadumethrige, Denan Wang, Rajendra Rathore Jul 2017

Unraveling The Coulombic Forces In Electronically Decoupled Bichromophoric Systems During Two Successive Electron Transfers, Maxim V. Ivanov, Shriya Wadumethrige, Denan Wang, Rajendra Rathore

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Coulombic forces are vital in modulating the electron transfer dynamics in both synthetic and biological polychromophoric assemblies, yet quantitative studies of the impact of such forces are rare, as it is difficult to disentangle electrostatic forces from simple electronic coupling. To address this problem, the impact of Coulombic interactions in the successive removal of two electrons from a model set of spirobifluorenes, where the interchromophoric electronic coupling is nonexistent, is quantitatively assessed. By systematically varying the separation of the bifluorene moieties using model compounds, ion pairing, and solvation, these interactions, with energies up to about 0.4 V, are absent at …

Articles

Candida haemulonii, Candida haemulonii var. vulnera and Candida duobushaemulonii, which form the C. haemulonii complex, are emerging etiologic agents of fungal infections known to be resistant to the most commonly used antifungals. The well-established anti-Candida potential ofmetal complexes containing 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands encouraged us to evaluate different copper(II), manganese(II), and silver(I) phen chelates for their ability to inhibit planktonic growth and biofilm of C. haemulonii species complex. Two novel coordination complexes, {[Cu(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)2].3H2O.EtOH}n and [Ag2(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)4].EtOH (3,6,9-tddaH2 = 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid), were synthesized in a similar fashion to the other, previously documented, sixteen copper(II), manganese(II), and silver(I) chelates employed herein. Three isolates of …

A Convenient Miniature Test Platform For Polyelectrolyte Membrane Fuel-Cell Research, Jamie A. Shetzline, Saheed Bukola, Stephen E. Creager

Publications

A simple and convenient small-scale fuel-cell test platform was created from a commercial compression fitting and graphite rod current collectors and used to conduct diagnostic tests on disk-shaped membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) fabricated from Nafion membranes and Nafion-impregnated platinum-on-carbon-cloth anodes and cathodes. A key advantage of this test platform is that it requires very little material, perhaps just a few milligrams, to conduct a fuel-cell test on a supported catalyst. Electrochemically-active surface area (ECSA) values for supported platinum on carbon-cloth electrodes were obtained by in-situ(in the fuel cell) and ex-situ (in liquid electrolyte) cyclic voltammetry on similarly-prepared electrodes, and values …

Synthesis,Structure And Properties Of Ruthenium Polypyridyl Metalloligand Based Metal-Organic Frameworks, Mamatha Polapally

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively studied because of their amazing applications in gas storage, purification, photocatalysis, chemical sensing, and imaging techniques. Ruthenium polypyridyl complexes have been broadly considered as photosensitizers for the conversion of solar energy and photoelectronic materials. With this aspect, we have synthesized three new ruthenium polypyridyl based MOFs ([Ru(H2bpc)Cu(bpc)(Hbpc)2(H2O)]·5H2O (1), [Ru(H2bpc)(Fe(bpc)(Hbpc)2(H2O)2]·6H2O (2) and [Ru(H2bpc)Ni(bpc)(Hbpc)2(H2O)2]·6H2O (3)) from ruthenium(III) chloride, bpc (2,2’- bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid) ligand, and 3d M(II) metal ions (M(II)= Cu(II), Fe(II), Ni(II)). These MOFs were synthesized under hydro or solvothermal conditions by using water, ethanol or methanol as solvents. The crystal structures of the new compounds …

Graphene-Based ‘Hybrids’ As High-Performance Electrodes With Tailored Interfaces For Alternative Energy Applications: Synthesis, Structure And Electrochemical Properties, Mayme Marie Van Meveren Jul 2017

Graphene-Based ‘Hybrids’ As High-Performance Electrodes With Tailored Interfaces For Alternative Energy Applications: Synthesis, Structure And Electrochemical Properties, Mayme Marie Van Meveren

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Technological progress is determined to a great extent by developments of novel materials from new combinations of known substances with different dimensionality and functionality. We investigate the development of 3D ‘hybrid’ nanomaterials by utilizing graphene based systems coupled with transition metal oxides (e.g. manganese oxides MnO2 and Mn3O4). This lays the groundwork for high performance electrochemical electrodes for alternative energy owing to their higher specific capacitance, wide operational window and stability through charge-discharge cycling, environmental benignity, cost effective, easily processed, and reproducible in a larger scale.

Thus far, very few people have investigated the potential of combining carbon sheets that …

Electrochemical Behavior Of Dense Electrodes For Impedancemetric Nox Sensors, Nabamita Pal Jul 2017

Electrochemical Behavior Of Dense Electrodes For Impedancemetric Nox Sensors, Nabamita Pal

Doctoral Dissertations

NOx (NO and NO2) exhaust gas sensors for diesel powered vehicles have traditionally consisted of porous platinum (Pt) electrodes along with a dense ZrO2 based electrolyte. Advancement in diesel engine technology results in lower NOx emissions. Although Pt is chemically and mechanically tolerant to the extreme exhaust gas environment, it is also a strong catalyst for oxygen reduction, which can interfere with the detection of NOx at concentrations below 100 ppm. Countering this behavior can add to the complexity and cost of the conventional NO x sensor design. Recent studies have shown that dense electrodes are less prone to heterogeneous …

Understanding The Surface Fouling Mechanism Of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Microelectrodes Using Microfluidics For Neurochemical Detection, An-Yi Chang Jul 2017

Understanding The Surface Fouling Mechanism Of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Microelectrodes Using Microfluidics For Neurochemical Detection, An-Yi Chang

Doctoral Dissertations

Electrochemical methods are widely used for chronic neurochemical sensing, but thus far, the organic solution redox reactions fouled the electrodes' surface. It caused the reduction of sensitivity and the electrodes' lifetime.

Here, we present the boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond microelectrodes (BDUNCD) as the next generation electrode material for neurochemical sensor development. To aid in long-term chronic monitoring of neurochemicals, they have a wide window of electrochemical potential, extremely low background current, and excellent chemical inertness. The main research goal is to reduce the rate of electrode fouling due to the reaction by-products, and significantly extend their useful lifetime.

We systematically characterize …

Preparation Of Au/Ag Nanoshells Through A Galvanic Replacement Reaction, Elizabeth Maschmeyer Jul 2017

Preparation Of Au/Ag Nanoshells Through A Galvanic Replacement Reaction, Elizabeth Maschmeyer

All Capstone Projects

It generally requires solid metal templates of hollow metal structures with uniform morphology by the present galvanic replacement mediated-growth approaches. In this project report, we present a new and simple approach for the controllable synthesis of Au/Ag alloy nanoshells (NSs) by applying galvanic replacement reaction on hollow Ag template in the presence of gold salt. High quality thiol-coated spherical shape Au/Ag NSs were produced via this new synthetic approach and the hollow interior of the Ag template is very well preserved during the galvanic replacement reaction. Plasmonic property measurements reveal that Au/Ag NSs exhibit strong absorption peak and more importantly, …

Manipulating The Optical Properties Of Hollow Pd/Ag And Pt/Ag Nanoparticles Synthesized By Galvanic Replacement Reaction, Salvador Alcantar Jul 2017

Manipulating The Optical Properties Of Hollow Pd/Ag And Pt/Ag Nanoparticles Synthesized By Galvanic Replacement Reaction, Salvador Alcantar

All Capstone Projects

Considerable efforts have recently been devoted to the fabrication of metallic nanostructures on account of their tunable morphologies which can lead to new and fascinating optical properties. These properties of a metallic nanostructure are most determined by their size, shape, composition and structure. Hollow metallic nanostructures have attracted much interest as their surface plasmonic properties and catalytic activities are completely different from those of solid nanoparticles. Galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) was known to be a powerful synthetic technique for converting solid metal nanostructures into hallow ones. These hollow nanostructures have high specific surface area, low density, use less material and …

Synthesis Of Au/Ag, Pd/Ag And Pt/Ag Nanoparticles By Galvanic Replacement Reaction, Sunnith Kumar Admala Jul 2017

Synthesis Of Au/Ag, Pd/Ag And Pt/Ag Nanoparticles By Galvanic Replacement Reaction, Sunnith Kumar Admala

All Capstone Projects

In recent years, galvanic replacement reactions have been successfully employed to produce bimetallic nanoparticles of a range of shapes, yet to date very few efforts have been devoted to develop methods for synthesizing smaller (<10nm) M/Ag; M=Au, Pt, Pd alloy particles using Ag hollow particles as sacrificial template. In this research work, we investigated new approach for the controllable synthesis of Au/Ag, Pd/Ag, and Pt/Ag alloy nanoparticles by applying galvanic replacement reaction on hollow Ag template in the presence of gold, palladium, and platinum salts. According to TEM analysis, the sizes of Au/Ag, Pd/Ag, and Pt/Ag alloy particle are 7.0±1.6 nm, 6.0±1.2 nm, and 3.0±0.8 nm, respectively. According to the study of optical property measurements on Ag hollow samples with increasing Au, Pt, and Pd content, it was observed that surface plasmon resonance peaks of the Au/Ag particles prepared with higher concentrated HAuCl4 solutions absorb at longer wavelengths and are red-shifted compared to the surface plasmon resonance of Ag hollow template. In the case of adding K2PdCl4 to Ag hollow sample resulted in blue shift of surface Plasmon resonance peaks for initial addition of palladium salt and further addition of K2PdCl4 caused the Plasmon peaks to diminish. Interestingly, our attempt to make Pt/Ag particle by reacting Ag hollow particles with various amounts of K2PtCl4 revealed that resulting alloy particles could still exhibit surface Plasmon resonance peaks for higher Pt content. Usually Pt and Pd nanoparticles do not exhibit surface plasmon resonance peaks in the visible spectrum. This work provides a model for a design of M/Ag; M=Au, Pt, Pd alloy particles, where combining Ag hollow samples with increasing amounts of Au, Pt, and Pd can provide successful execution of tenability of surface plasmon resonance.

High Resolution Spectra Of Carbon Monoxide, Propane And Ammonia For Atmospheric Remote Sensing, Christopher Andrew Beale Jul 2017

High Resolution Spectra Of Carbon Monoxide, Propane And Ammonia For Atmospheric Remote Sensing, Christopher Andrew Beale

OES Theses and Dissertations

Spectroscopy is a critical tool for analyzing atmospheric data. Identification of atmospheric parameters such as temperature, pressure and the existence and concentrations of constituent gases via remote sensing techniques are only possible with spectroscopic data. These form the basis of model atmospheres which may be compared to observations to determine such parameters. To this end, this dissertation explores the spectroscopy of three molecules: ammonia, propane and carbon monoxide.

Infrared spectra have been recorded for ammonia in the region 2400-9000 cm-1. These spectra were recorded at elevated temperatures (from 293-973 K) using a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS). Comparison between …

The cytochrome P450 (CYP) family 1A enzymes, CYP1A1 and CYP1A2, are two of the most important enzymes implicated in the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous compounds through oxidation. These enzymes are also known to metabolize environmental procarcinogens into carcinogenic species, leading to the advent of several types of cancer. The development of selective inhibitors for these P450 enzymes, mitigating procarcinogenic oxidative effects, has been the focus of many studies in recent years. CYP1A1 is mainly found in extrahepatic tissues while CYP1A2 is the major CYP enzyme in human liver. Many molecules have been found to be metabolized by both of …

Fuzzy Color Clustering For Melanoma Diagnosis In Dermoscopy Images, Haidar A. Almubarak, R. Joe Stanley, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A fuzzy logic-based color histogram analysis technique is presented for discriminating benign skin lesions from malignant melanomas in dermoscopy images. The approach extends previous research for utilizing a fuzzy set for skin lesion color for a specified class of skin lesions, using alpha-cut and support set cardinality for quantifying a fuzzy ratio skin lesion color feature. Skin lesion discrimination results are reported for the fuzzy clustering ratio over different regions of the lesion over a data set of 517 dermoscopy images consisting of 175 invasive melanomas and 342 benign lesions. Experimental results show that the fuzzy clustering ratio applied over …

Acylation Of Superoxide Dismutase 1 (Sod1) At K122 Alters Sod1 Localization And Sod1-Mediated Inhibition Of Mitochondrial Respiration, Nathan William Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase (SOD1), is a ubiquitous antioxidant enzyme with several emerging roles outside of its canonical function. SOD1 is also emerging in central roles in cancer and neurodegenerative pathologies. Little is known about SOD1 regulation, particularly at a post-translational level. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) play an important role in enabling proteins to rapidly respond to their environment. Therefore, identifying specific PTMs involved in protein regulation represents a powerful opportunity to interfere with any associated pathologies. This work employs proteomics to identify mechanisms of post-translation regulation on cell survival signaling proteins. We focused on SOD1, which protects cells from oxidative stress. …

Observations Of Greenhouse Gas Isotopologues With Ace-Fts And Waccm, Eric Michael Buzan Jul 2017

Observations Of Greenhouse Gas Isotopologues With Ace-Fts And Waccm, Eric Michael Buzan

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Increases in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere are the major driver of climate change. Quantifying the sources and sinks of these gases is a major focus of research. Measuring isotopologues, or molecules that differ in isotopic composition, is one useful way of constraining the budget of a molecule as they are highly sensitive to different sources and sinks. However, measurements above the surface have been restricted to a few locations and have only reached the lower stratosphere. Satellite-based remote sensing can achieve nearly global measurement coverage, but so far no satellites have measured isotopologues.

Presented here are measurements of …
