Octahedral Ruthenium(Ii) Complexes For C-H Bond Activation And Olefin Hydroarylation, Patrick Z. Zdunek

Honors Theses

The study of inert C-H bond activation of hydrocarbons has been gaining interest. As these hydrocarbons are used in the production of many consumables such as fuel, plastics, and detergents, it is necessary to efficiently utilize the finite quantity of petroleum feedstocks. Transition metal complexes are incorporated as catalysts into synthetic routes to create new C-X (X = C, N, O) bonds in order to increase the chemical value of organic molecules. The complex [Ru(η6-p-cymene){P(OCH2CF3)3}(Ph)(OTf)] (1) (P{OCH2CF3}3 = tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite, Ph = phenyl, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) was prepared and tested for functionality as a catalyst in olefin hydroarylation. Catalytic reactions …

Enantioselective Γ- And Δ -Borylation Of Unsaturated Carbonyl Derivatives: Synthesis, Mechanistic Insights, And Applications, Gia L. Hoang

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Chiral boronic esters are valuable synthetic intermediates widely used in a variety of stereospecific transformations. Transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration (CAHB) of alkenes is among the most popular methods for their preparation. Enantioselective hydroboration of activated alkenes (i.e., vinyl arene derivatives or conjugated carbonyl compounds) have been extensively studied by many research groups. We, on the other hand, are interested in enantioselective hydroboration of unactivated alkenes utilizing coordinating functional groups (e.g., carbonyl derivatives) to give functionalized, chiral boronic esters. While conjugate addition and C–H activation methodologies provide efficient alternatives to CAHB for enantioselective beta-borylation of carbonyl compounds, direct gamma- and delta-borylations …

Synthesis And Catalytic Evaluation Of Novel C-Alpha-Methyl-Beta-Proline Analogues, And Concise Synthetic Approach To Nh-Fmoc-S-Trityl-C-Alpha-Methyl Cysteine, Hari Kiran Kotapati

Dissertations

In the field of chemistry there is a growing demand for small molecule organocatalysts such as amino acids, more specifically proline and its analogues, which could catalyze various key chemical reactions in the synthesis of several biologically important molecules. Even though natural proline is reported to catalyze various chemical reactions, its use as organocatalyst is limited mainly due to the solubility issues in the reaction media and high catalyst loadings, which is not very ideal for bulk scale manufacturing. To address these limitations we planned to develop unnatural analogues of proline that could catalyze the reactions with lower catalyst loadings …

Property Morphology Correlations Of Organic Semiconductor Nanowires, Frederick Marshall Mcfarland Aug 2017

Property Morphology Correlations Of Organic Semiconductor Nanowires, Frederick Marshall Mcfarland

Dissertations

Chemically doped and non-doped P3HT nanoaggregates are studied to establish a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between their morphology and various optoelectronic properties. One-dimensional nanoaggregates of P3HT are chosen as the model systems here due to their high surface/volume ratio and suitability for microscopic investigations.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) are used to correlate property/morphology characteristics of non-doped P3HT nanowhiskers. Topographical measurements indicate that individually folded P3HT motifs stack via interfacial interactions to form nanowhiskers in solution. Further aging leads to multi-layered nanowhiskers with greater stability and less instances of π-π sliding of interfacial edge-on …

Ion Trap Miniaturization Considerations: Space-Charge Effects In Cylindrical Ion Traps And Misalignment Effects In A Two-Plate Linear Ion Trap, Yuan Tian Aug 2017

Ion Trap Miniaturization Considerations: Space-Charge Effects In Cylindrical Ion Traps And Misalignment Effects In A Two-Plate Linear Ion Trap, Yuan Tian

Theses and Dissertations

Portable mass spectrometers provide convenience for applications where conventional mass spectrometers are not suitable. However, a series of miniaturization issues show up in small mass spectrometers, specifically mass analyzers, that need to be thoroughly addressed before further miniaturization. The work in this dissertation focuses on miniaturization issues of ion trap mass analyzers. Space-charge is one of the major issues in small ion traps affecting their analytical performance. It limits ion trapping capacity when ion-ion repulsion causes spreading of a packet of ions. Simulation studies on the relationship between different trap dimensions and trapping capacity was done on a geometry-optimized cylindrical …

Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Cyclizations For The Synthesis Of Azaheterocycles And The Total Synthesis Of Yaku'amide A, Yu Cai Aug 2017

Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Cyclizations For The Synthesis Of Azaheterocycles And The Total Synthesis Of Yaku'amide A, Yu Cai

Theses and Dissertations

Two different research projects are described in this dissertation. The first one focuses on microwave-promoted iminyl radical cyclization for the formation of azaheterocycles which are embedded within numerous pharmaceuticals and biologically active natural products (such as clindamycin, eletriptan, moxiflaxin, etc.). We are quite interested in this project because of the significance of nitrogen-containing heterocycles as pharmaceuticals and organocatalysts combined with the need for safe, simple, and economical means of constructing them. We have successfully developed an efficient one-step synthesis of 2-acylpyrroles and diastereoselective dihydropyrroles from readily available oxime ether substrates. This remarkably efficient and environmentally friendly methodology should be useful …

Post-Translational Regulation Of Superoxide Dismutase 1 (Sod1): The Effect Of K122 Acylation On Sod1'S Metabolic Activity, Courtney Jean Banks

Theses and Dissertations

Many mutations in superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) cause destabilization and misfolding of the protein and are implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Likewise, a few post-translational modifications (PTMs) on SOD1 have been shown to cause the same phenotype. However, relatively few PTMs on SOD1 have been studied in depth and, in particular, very few studies have demonstrated how these PTMs affect SOD1's various biological roles. SOD1 is traditionally known for its role in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging but has also been found to have a few other biological roles, including transcription factor activity to promote genomic stability, preservation of cytoskeletal activity, …

A Novel Method For Synthesis Of Hydroxytyrosol, Emmanuel Onobun Aug 2017

A Novel Method For Synthesis Of Hydroxytyrosol, Emmanuel Onobun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dihydroxyphenolethanol, a naturally occurring polyphenol most common in olive tree (Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenols family, because of its remarkable antioxidant activity, its ability to inhibit oxidation of low density lipids (LDL), and its protection against DNA oxidative damage. Hydroxytyrosol, which is widely used in cosmetics and food supplements industries, can be purchased as an olive oil extract that contains low concentration of hydroxytyrosol besides other polyphenols. The price and low natural abundance of hydroxytyrosol make alternative synthetic sources very attractive. In this research, a novel method for the synthesis of pure …

Functionalization Of Indium-Based Quantum Dots For Use As A Non-Viral Gene Therapy Vector, Nicholas A. Mundt Aug 2017

Functionalization Of Indium-Based Quantum Dots For Use As A Non-Viral Gene Therapy Vector, Nicholas A. Mundt

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This work aims to develop functionalized, water-soluble indium-based quantum dots (QDs) as a non-viral gene therapy vector. The QDs were solubilized in water by exchanging native hydrophobic surface ligands with 11-mercaptoundecanioc acid (MUA); an amphiphilic ligand providing terminal carboxylate groups that impart water solubility to the QDs. The aqueous QDs were then functionalized with a terminal tertiary amine to impart a positive surface charge, allowing negatively-charged DNA to complex with the nanoparticles. The QDs were characterized via electrophoresis to determine their ability to bind DNA. Results show that further work is needed to optimize DNA binding. In addition, this work …

Ab Initio Methyl Linoleate Bond Dissociation Energies: First Principles Fishing For Wise Crack Products, Zachary Ryan Wilson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

With the prices of petroleum reflecting demand for this finite resource, attention has been turned to alternative sources of energy. Biodiesel, defined as fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), exhibits many of the same properties as conventional diesel but is derived from biological sources. FAMEs are subsequently thermally cracked to form more light-weight petrochemical products. I aim to further understand the thermal cracking procedure, at an atomic-level, in hopes that this may aid in future engineering of viable fuels. I studied the effective computational modeling of bond disassociations in the FAME methyl linoleate. Bond dissociation in a 44-reaction database with known …

Electronic Structure Evaluation Of Competing Pathways In The Gold(Iii)-Catalyzed Ohloff-Rautenstrauch Cyclosimerization Converting Propargylic Acetates To Carene-Like Natural Products, Jeremy M. Hines

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Propargylic acetates can lead to complex transformations upon exposure to a gold catalyst. Gold catalyzed transformations also allow for simple synthesis of a number of natural products. Gold (III)-cycloisomerization of a 5-acetoxy-1,6-enyne is reported to proceed through two pathways that differ in the order of major events: cyclization followed by ester migration (“cyclization first”) or the reverse (“migration first”). Both pathways could theoretically proceed in either order. This rearrangement is called the Ohloff-Rautenstrauch rearrangement and has high regio- and stereocontrol affording a bicylo[4.1.0]heptane carbon substructure. This rearrangement allows for the synthesis of the carene class of natural products. Computational modeling …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Ligand And Its Silver(I) And Palladium(Ii) Complexes: An Incidental Discovery Of Halogen Bonding In Three Structures Of Iodoimidazoles, Chideraa Iheanyi Nwachukwu

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Ligand design is a vital component of coordination chemistry, and the use of ligands for complexation of metal cations have been explored for many years. Several metal complexes of silver and palladium have been reported in literature and these complexes have been fully studied. I chose to study silver and palladium, because these metals are precious and are used in several industries such as electronics and jewelry industry and also in catalysis. In addition to economic incentives to recover these metals, it should be noted that these heavy metals often pose both environmental and health hazards. For example, low levels …

Solar cells that are three-dimensionally structured offer significant advantages over traditional crystalline / semi-crystalline panels in that they can convert incident photons that strike them at large incident angles, can be flexible / used in applications which require non-rigid materials, and can be substantially cheaper to produce than traditional panels, especially …

The Functionalization Of N-Cyclobutylanilines Under Photoredox Catalysis, Jiang Wang Aug 2017

The Functionalization Of N-Cyclobutylanilines Under Photoredox Catalysis, Jiang Wang

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While transition metal catalyzed cross coupling reactions have become one of the most useful strategies in constructing carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formations, major disadvantages such as high reaction temperature, expansive metal catalysts input and limited reaction substrates scope have significantly downshifted the applications of those two electron involved transformations. Comparably, the studies on the redox coupling reactions are less investigated. Derived from single electron transfer process, the redox coupling reactions can be used to construct otherwise challenging chemical bonds efficiently, such as Csp3-Csp3 bond. Recently, visible light mediated photoredox catalysis has merged as a highly prominent tool in the development …

Advancements In The Understanding Of Nonlinear Optics And Their Use In Material Analysis, Shawn C. Averett Aug 2017

Advancements In The Understanding Of Nonlinear Optics And Their Use In Material Analysis, Shawn C. Averett

Theses and Dissertations

Adhesion, heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemistry, and many other important processes and properties are driven by interactions at surfaces and interfaces. Vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (VSFG) is an increasingly popular analytical technique because it can provide information about the nature and physical orientation of functional groups at these surfaces and interfaces. Analysis of VSFG data can be complicated by the presence of SFG signal that is not associated with a resonant vibration. This nonresonant sum frequency generation (NR-SFG) signal can interfere with the resonant signal and influence the detected spectrum. Methods have been developed to remove NR-SFG signal; however, these methods …

Instrumental Aspects Of Oxygen Sensing: Quantitation And Recalibration Of A Biofouled Oxygen Sensor, Marlena Patrick

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In vivo oxygen sensing is a critical area of research for medical applications, such as ischemic stroke, but this important topic is not fully understood or resolved. In addition, the best method for calibration of in vivo sensors is as yet undetermined. For all implantable devices, biofouling, the adsorption of biological material to the device surface, is another significant problem with no clear or well-defined solution. One method employed is to apply a protective polymer membrane to the sensor surface in order to minimize the adsorption of biological material. The work described here investigates two polymers applied to a gold …

Role Of Molecular Chaperonin Cct And Its Co-Chaperone Phlp1 In The Assembly Of Mtor Complexes, Madhura Vinayak Dhavale

Theses and Dissertations

mTOR is the central kinase in biochemical pathways that regulate cellular growth, protein synthesis and cell survival. Deregulation of mTOR signaling results in uncontrolled cell proliferation and hence is implicated in various cancers and autoimmune diseases. mTOR functions through two distinct signaling complexes, called mTORC1 and mTORC2. CCT is a cytosolic chaperonin that assists in folding of several protein substrates. In these studies, we have identified two components of the mTOR complexes, mLST8 and Raptor, as substrates of CCT. We have performed biochemical and signaling studies which indicate that CCT is involved in assembly and signaling of mTOR complexes by …

Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Fragmentations: A Practical And Efficient Method Of Functionalization, Mary Megan Jackman Aug 2017

Microwave-Promoted Iminyl Radical Fragmentations: A Practical And Efficient Method Of Functionalization, Mary Megan Jackman

Theses and Dissertations

We report a novel fragmentation and functionalization method using a cyclic iminyl radical. Formation of this radical occurs by microwave heating under mild conditions and short reaction times. The reaction avoids the use of explosive or toxic radical initiators and propagating agents. This reaction is versatile, with the ability to install two functional groups that are ultimately derived from a ketone in the substrate precursor. A variety of radical traps capable of forming both carbon-carbon bonds and carbon-heteroatom bonds have been tested, and the products are obtained in good yields. We demonstrate the power of this reaction by functionalizing complex …

Electrophilic Catalysis Using Heterobimetallic Complexes, Whitney Kaye Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Conventional ligand design in transition metal catalysis capitalizes on the ability of phosphorous, nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, and sulfur-based donors to modify the steric and electronic properties of a reactive metal center. Heterobimetallic transition metal complexes that contain a dative metal-metal bond provide a unique approach to ligand design where the reactivity of the metal center can be modified by metal-metal electronic communication. Our laboratory is interested in using the unique properties of heterobimetallic complexes to address significant limitations in current transition metal catalysis. My PhD work has focused on the ability of early/late transition metal heterobimetallic complexes to facilitate catalysis …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Utilization of computational modelling and simulation is expanding as computer processing power has increased and as new tools have been developed. This thesis focuses on efforts to improve the accuracy of simulations in aluminosilicate zeolites, an industrially important category of materials for catalysis and separations. For these sorbents, partial atomic charge represents a critical parameter in molecular mechanics simulations, determining the Coulombic non-bonding interaction. Partial charges may also be used as a measure of important physical parameters of the system such as the degree of covalency or the relative acidity of catalytic sites. We compare several common methods for predicting …

Novel Design Strategies For Platinum-Containing Conjugated Polymers And Small Molecules For Organic Solar Cells, Wenhan He Jul 2017

Novel Design Strategies For Platinum-Containing Conjugated Polymers And Small Molecules For Organic Solar Cells, Wenhan He

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Current state-of-the-art organic solar cells (OSCs) adopt the strategy of using conjugated polymers or small molecules as donors and fullerene derivatives as acceptors in their active layers. Regarding to the donors of interest, the conjugated polymers and small molecules coupled with heavy metals have been less explored compared to their counterparts. Among various transition metal complexes applied, Pt(II) complexes are unique because of their intrinsic square planar geometries and ability to serve as building blocks for conjugated systems. Furthermore, the heavy metal Pt facilitates the formation of triplet excitons with longer life times through spin-orbital coupling which are of benefit …
