Application Of Factorial Design In The Analysis Of Factors Influencing Textile Dye Adsorption On Activated Carbon, Eid A. Alkhatib, Penny A. Snetsinger, Ahmad Alanazi, Sarah Aanonsen

Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications

In this study, the use of factorial design software is applied to evaluate efficiently factors influencing the adsorption capacity of activated carbon in treating textile dyes. Activated carbon is usually used to treat wastewater effluents from textile industries in order to remove textile dyes before discharge into the environment. Most treatment facilities, particularly large industrial or wastewater treatment facilities use continuous flow reactors or packed columns to treat the dye. Due to the limited residence time in these types of reactors, adsorption equilibrium is not necessarily reached, and the absorption rate becomes an important factor in this treatment process. Other …

Approaches Toward Novel 1,2,3-Triazole Sensors For The Detection Of Anions And Heavy Metal Cations, Richard D. Govan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Cations and anions play pivotal roles in biological and physiological processes, however an imbalance in concentration of any ion can be detrimental. Therefore, research into the selective recognition of anions and heavy metal cations has acquired much attention. One approach involves the use of chemosensors. Upon interaction with targeted analytes, chemosensors produce a distinct response, in some cases a fluorescent or colorimetric signal. The 1,2,3-triazole unit has much potential as a chemical sensor due to its unique photophysical properties. The specificity, selectivity, and signaling mechanism of triazole sensors can be tuned with conjugation in the motif and choice and placement …

An Ionic Liquid Based Sensor For Diclofenac Determination In Water, Emma Brennan, Pauline Futvoie, John Cassidy, Benjamin Schazmann

Articles

This paper details a miniaturised, solid state ion-selective electrode selective for diclofenac. The sensor comprises a novel ionic liquid electroactive material – an imidazolium–diclofenac ion associate. The ion associate is present in a plasticised poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane on planar carbon electrodes, with an intermediate poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) layer. The sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor were determined using chronopotentiometric methods. In response to diclofenac, a slope of −53.3 ± 3.6 mV/dec was observed. A limit of detection of 2.90 × 10−3 g L−1 is reported, with a linear range of 3.18 × 10−3 g L−1 to 3.18 g L−1. …

Effects Of Ommt On The Aging Behaviors Of Halogen-Antimony Flame-Retarded Lgfpa6 Composites: Flammability And Thermal Degradation Kinetics, Xiaoling Zuo, Haishuo Song, Huiju Shao, Minh Hang Au, Tao Wei, Jianbing Guo

Articles

After a long-term thermo-oxidative exposure, compared to the long-glass-fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composite containing halogen-antimony flame retardants (FR/LGFPA6), substitution of a certain content of flame retardants with organo-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) was found to positively affect the FR/LGFPA6 composite in some cases (i.e. flammability and thermal degradation kinetics). The aged OMMT/FR/LGFPA6 composite not only was less flammable but also behaved better in the formation of char residues. All the calculated apparent activation energy obtained by the methods of Friedman, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Coats- Redfern in a dynamic measurement showed an obvious increase for the OMMT/FR/LGFPA6 composite after aging, a theoretical evidence for …

Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry For Real-Time Metal Speciation Analysis, Hettige. M. Thushani Siriwardhane Jan 2017

Fast Scan Cyclic Voltammetry For Real-Time Metal Speciation Analysis, Hettige. M. Thushani Siriwardhane

Theses and Dissertations

Electrochemistry is a powerful analytical tool that has been widely used to detect trace metals in natural systems. However, studying the speciation of metals during dynamic events, such as storms and floods, is analytically challenging due to the limited temporal resolution of traditional electrochemical techniques. Additionally, most techniques report the total metal concentration (both complexed and free) that does not reflect the toxicity of these metals, which arise mostly from the free state. To overcome these issues, we previously pioneered the use of fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) to measure free copper (Cu(II)) and lead (Pb(II)) in real-time in laboratory …

Development Of An Electrochemical Method To Study Real-Time In Vivo Neurotransmitter Modulation, Srimal Aminda Samaranayake

Theses and Dissertations

Histamine and serotonin are important biogenic amines that regulate vital brain functions. These two transmitters are thoughts to be involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and affective disorders including depression. Histamine and serotonin are believed to regulate each other but their fundamental neuromodulation mechanisms are not well understood. This lack of understanding makes brain disorders implicating these two transmitters difficult to diagnose and treat. Our lab extensively investigates the serotonergic system to understand serotonin’s neurochemistry in the brain. However, histamine is relatively understudied with respect to other biogenic amines because of an absence of suitable analytical tools. …

Highly Selective Schiff Base Derivatives For Colorimetric Detection Of Al$^{3+}$, Zi̇ya Aydin, Mustafa Keleş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Schiff base derivatives NBAR and NSAR were developed for selective detection of Al$^{3+}$ in aqueous solution. UV-vis spectroscopic studies revealed that NBAR and NSAR showed marked sensitivity and selectivity to Al$^{3+}$ in acetonitrile (ACN)/water (v/v, 1:1, pH 6.80). The NBAR and NSAR receptors bound Al$^{3+}$ in a 2:1 stoichiometry with apparent binding constants 4.09 $\times $ 10$^{11}$ M$^{-2}$ and 1.65 $\times $ 10$^{12}$ M$^{-2}$, respectively. They also displayed distinct changes in color upon the alteration of free Al$^{3+}$ levels in solution with reversible responses and showed little interference with other metal ions.

Improving Binding Affinity Through Cyclization, Kaylee M. Newcomb, Nicolas Abrigo Jan 2017

Improving Binding Affinity Through Cyclization, Kaylee M. Newcomb, Nicolas Abrigo

Undergraduate Research Posters

Cancer chemotherapy results in systematic damage as the drugs used are also toxic to benign tissue. Sensitizing a cancer cell to therapy by interfering with the DNA repair mechanisms would decrease overall toxicity, as the necessary dosage of chemotherapy drugs would be lowered. The Hartman lab developed a peptide (8.6) that binds with a KD of 1 μM to the C-terminal domain of breast cancer associated protein (BRCA1), blocking homologous recombination. The crystal structure of the peptide shows the tyrosine and threonine residues are close together, suggesting that by cyclizing these positions, the peptide may already be constrained into its …

Fluorescence Polarization Measurements To Probe Alignment Of A Bithiophene Dye In One-Dimensional Channels Of Self-Assembled Phenylethynylene Bis-Urea Macrocycle Crystals, Preecha Kittikhunnatham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the use of polarized fluorescence microscopy to directly probe guest molecule orientation in bis-urea macrocycle crystals. These macrocycles assemble to afford one-dimensional (1D) microchannels ∼9 Å in diameter that have previously been shown to exhibit normal Fickian diffusion and induce selective reactivity among the confined guest molecules. In the present work, we take advantage of the quasi-1D morphology of fiber-like microcrystals with the extended dimension corresponding to the channel axis to measure excitation and emission polarization values for a bithiophene guest. Guest fluorescence is shown to be polarized along the fiber axis with emission polarization values up …

Effects Of Silvopasture Establishment On Aqueous And Gaseous Soil N Losses At The University Of New Hampshire Organic Dairy Research Farm, Kathryn Ann Slebodnik

Honors Theses and Capstones

The expansion of local agriculture in the New England region is putting increased pressure on farmers to expand their arable land base. While clear-cutting is a traditional method of converting forested land to agriculture, it is known for having adverse ecological impacts. To minimize these impacts, farmers can create a silvopasture which incorporates a portion of the original forest canopy into pastures or crop fields. This study evaluates the impact of land-use changes for agriculture on soil nitrogen (N) retention. In particular, this study investigates the differences in soil N turnover, gaseous loss, and aqueous loss among an established forest, …

Calix[4]Pyrroles With Bulky Substituents And Their Anion Binding Studies, Ahmet Akar, Abdullah Aydogan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Calix[4]pyrrole derivatives with bulky substituents at their meso-positions were synthesized via mixed condensation of pyrrole with cyclohexanone and acetophenone derivatives. Anion binding studies, carried out by isothermal titration calorimetry in 1,2-dichloroethane with Cl$^{-}$ and CH$_{3}$CO$_{2}^{-}$ anions in the form of their tetrabutylammonium salts, revealed that these new calix[4]pyrrole derivatives can bind the aforementioned anions as effectively as the unsubstituted ''parent'' system, octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole (1). Structural characterizations of new calix[4]pyrroles were carried out by using $^{1}$H and $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy corroborated with mass spectrometry.
