Synthesis Of Pyridine-Based Ligands As Potential Magnetic Liquid Crystals, Jacqueline Gamboa Varela^, Jose E. Nunez*
Synthesis Of Pyridine-Based Ligands As Potential Magnetic Liquid Crystals, Jacqueline Gamboa Varela^, Jose E. Nunez*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Ligands for the development of metallomesogens (metal-containing-liquid-crystals) have attracted attention due to potential applications in materials science such as optical devices, magnetic switches, and conductors. The attempts to synthesize bis(3-alkoxy) pyridine amines are presented. These structures are designed to exhibit liquid crystalline properties as metal complexes. Reaction conditions using potassium carbonate and potassium tert-butoxide as bases under Ullmann-type conditions in various solvents (aromatic and non-aromatic), between -78 ⁰C to 160 ⁰C, have been unsuccessful. It is imperative to understand the electronic effects of the meta-substituted pyridine precursors to further develop the copper-catalyzed conditions of these types of molecules.

Bis( N, N-Dipheny-3-Pyridineamine) Tungsten Complex As Molecular Gyroscope, Verenice Ramirez^, Jose E. Nunez*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
In recent years, the interest in molecular machines has increased based on inspiration from macroscopic machines, such as gyroscopes applied in racecar engines and arrays of gyroscopes in automatic pilot functions. The same concept has been taken down to the nanoscopic level as molecular machines in solution like bevel gears and turnstiles, but for application use they must be in the solid state. Gyroscope molecules can exhibit fast rotation and the aim is to design free rotation in the crystal lattice that maintains volume conserving motion. Bis(N,N-diphenyl-3-pyridinamine) tungsten complex was prepared by irradiation of tungsten hexacarbonyl in the presence of …

Method Development For The Analysis Of Ddt, Ddd, And Dde In Cow Milk, Amanda Parra^, Betty Rocha, Wen-Yee Lee*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Organochlorine Pesticides (OCs) are classified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). They have been found to bioaccumulate in organisms over time. These chemicals tend to attach to fatty tissues in animals and humans, remaining for long periods of time. OCs may be responsible for a vast number of health conditions including neurological disorders, endocrine disruption, reproductive dysfunctions, and possible linkage to cancer. OCs such as DDT, DDE and DDD are banned, however, they have still been detected in environmental samples worldwide. The main objective of this study is to investigate the presence of DDT, DDE and DDD in cow milk using …

Metal Carbonyl Catalysts For The Transformation Of Silicon Hydrides To Siloxanes In The Presence Of Dmf, Eduardo Cervantes^, Renzo Arias Ugarte, Hemant K. Sharma, Keith H. Pannell*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
It has recently been reported that, upon photochemical irradiation, tertiary silanes (R3SiH) react with DMF to form disiloxanes (R3Si-O-SiR3) and Me3N, using the transition metal alkyl complex (η5-C5H5)Fe(CO)2Me as a catalyst. Intermediates of the type R3SiOCH2NMe2 were proposed as the important first step via a hydrosilylation reaction but no evidence was obtained for this suggestion. By changing the catalyst to Mo(CO)6 we have now observed that not only do we form the expected disiloxanes, but for the first …
Human Endogenous Sodium Pump Inhibitors Measurement, Source, Synthesis And Regulation, Jie Ma
Human Endogenous Sodium Pump Inhibitors Measurement, Source, Synthesis And Regulation, Jie Ma
Theses and Dissertations
The sodium pump (SP or Na+,K+-ATPase) is a membrane embedded protein complex that pumps 3 sodium ions out and 2 potassium ions into the cell per cycle and in so doing creates a cell membrane electrochemical potential. The membrane potential is critical for any functional cell. In the vasculature, reduction in the voltage potential causes vascular smooth muscle contraction and a narrowing of blood vessels (vasoconstriction) which can lead to increased blood pressure (hypertension). Substantial research over the past several decades has provided a vast amount of research on SP inhibitors, sometimes called endogenous digitalis-like factors (EDLF). Increased levels of …
Super Collision Energy Transfer Studies In Single Collisions Between Vibrationally Hot Benzene Like Molecules And Ground State Bath Molecules: The Effect Of Physical Properties Of Donor And Bath Molecules On Super Collision Energy Transfer, Kilyoung Kim
Theses and Dissertations
This research is focused on single-collision energy transfer events between highly vibrationally excited benzene-like donor molecules and small bath molecules, CO2 and N2O in the vibrational ground level. Measuring how much energy is transferred from donors to bath molecules was accomplished by probing bath molecules scattered into specific-rotational states using a tunable Δv=0.0003 cm-1 solid state diode laser. The normalized energy transfer probability distribution function, P(E,E'), determined from energy gain information, is very useful in comparing collisional energy transfer efficiency between various collision systems. P(E,E') is also used to investigate the effects of donor and bath physical properties on collisional …

Reduced Activity Of Multiple Endocrine Disrupting Compounds: 17Β-Estradiol And Bisphenol A With A Chemi-Luminescent Assay, Anna C. Ortiz^, Roberto J. De La Torre-Roche, Marc B. Cox, Wen-Yee Lee*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
The concern about the impacts of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the environment has increased recently with their high occurrence in surface waters and sex changes in various aquatic organisms. EDCs include ubiquitously used pharmaceuticals and personal care products, such as soap, detergents, contraceptives, and other medicines, which are released constantly into the environment, in waste water treatment plant effluent. Though toxicological effects of these individual, EDCs have been studied, knowledge on how these chemicals interact together in the environment is very limited. The objective of this project is to study the multi-residue effect of EDCs using a chemi-luminescent yeast …

A Novel Use Of Digoxin Immune Fab Fragment In Identification And Isolation Of An Endogenous Digitalis-Like Factor Found In Preeclampsia, Moana Lee Hopoate-Sitake
Theses and Dissertations
The mechanisms mediating the hypertension of preeclampsia (PE) are unclear. Endogenous digitalis-like factors (EDLFs) are specific sodium pump (SP) inhibitors implicated in essential and experimental hypertension, but they have not been fully explored in the setting of PE. This study uses a digoxin antibody Fab fragment to address the question of whether such factors are present and increased in PE, to investigate a possible treatment of PE, and to isolate and characterize all EDLFs present in PE. Sera and placenta from women with PE did show a significant increase in SP inhibition in comparison to women with normal pregnancy and …
Surface Modification, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Silicon, Polymer, And Nanotube Composite Materials, Lei Pei
Theses and Dissertations
In my research, I have performed many characterization and fabrication experiments that are based on tools of analytical chemistry, materials chemistry, and surface science. My research projects are as follows. (1) Fabrication of transparent polymer templates for nanostructured amorphous silicon photovoltaics was done using low-cost nanoimprint lithography of polydimethylsiloxane. This approach provides a test bed for absorption studies in nanostructured film geometries and should result in improved light capturing designs in thin-film solar cells. Nanopatterned polymer films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and optical measurements. (2) A straightforward method for fabricating freely suspended, thin, carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes infiltrated …

A large number of bioactive natural products have been isolated from plant endophytic fungi. However, molecular mechanisms for the biosynthesis of these metabolites have lagged behind because genetic and biochemical studies are difficult to perform within many of the endophytes. In this work, we describe our attempt to express a putative mycoepoxydiene (MED) biosynthetic gene cluster in Fusarium verticillioides, which has a well-developed genetic system for the study fungal polyketide biosynthesis. MED was isolated from Phomopsis sp. A123, a fungal endophyte of the mangrove plant, Kandelia candel. It has several unusual structural features and interesting biological activities. Integration of …

This report examines the molecular mechanism by which high-fidelity DNA polymerases select nucleotides during the replication of an abasic site, a non-instructional DNA lesion. This was accomplished by synthesizing several unique 5-substituted indolyl 2′-deoxyribose triphosphates and defining their kinetic parameters for incorporation opposite an abasic site to interrogate the contributions of π-electron density and solvation energies. In general, the Kd, app values for hydrophobic non-natural nucleotides are ∼10-fold lower than those measured for isosteric hydrophilic analogs. In addition, kpol values for nucleotides that contain less π-electron densities are slower than isosteric analogs possessing higher degrees of π-electron density. The differences …

Two {110}-faceted gold nanostructures—rhombic dodecahedra and obtuse triangular bipyramids—have been synthesized via a Ag-assisted, seed-mediated growth method. The combination of a Cl−-containing surfactant with a low concentration of Ag+ plays a role in the stabilization of the {110} facets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported synthesis of a {110}-faceted bipyramid structure.

Acyclovir (ACV) has been commonly used as an antiviral for decades. Although the crystal structure of the commercial form, a 3:2 ACV/water solvate, has been known since 1980s, investigation into the structure of anhydrous ACV has been limited. Here, we report the characterization of four anhydrous forms of ACV and a new hydrate in addition to the known hydrate. Two of the anhydrous forms appear as small needles and are stable to air exposure, whereas the third form is morphologically similar but quickly absorbs water from the atmosphere and converts back to the commercial form. The high-temperature modification is achieved …

Rhodopsin (Rh) and bathorhodopsin (bathoRh) quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics models based on ab initio multiconfigurational wave functions are employed to look at the light induced pi-bond breaking and reconstitution occurring during the Rh -> bathoRh and bathoRh -> Rh isomerizations. More specifically, semiclassical trajectory computations are used to compare the excited (S-1) and ground (S-0) state dynamics characterizing the opposite steps of the Rh/bathoRh photochromic cycle during the first 200 fs following photoexcitation. We show that the information contained in these data provide an unprecedented insight into the sub-picosecond pi-bond reconstitution process which is at the basis of the reactivity of the protein …

Isoprene is the precursor for number of alcohol, organosulfate, and organonitrate species observed in ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Recent laboratory and field work has suggested that isoprene-derived epoxides may be crucial intermediates that can explain the existence of these compounds in SOA. To confirm this hypothesis, the specific hydroxy epoxides observed in gas phase isoprene photooxidation experiments (as well as several other related species) were synthesized and the bulk phase aqueous reactions of these species in the presence of sulfate and nitrate were studied via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. The results indicate that both primary and tertiary organosulfates …

Determination Of Caffeine As A Marker For Septic Tank Contamination Of Wilgreen Lake, Rosemary Onjiko, Susan Godbey, Walter S. Borowski, Darrin Smith, Lori Wilson
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Wilgreen Lake in Richmond, Kentucky, has been listed by both the state and the Environmental Protection Agency as an “impaired” lake due to excess nutrients, which may be in part contributed by domestic septic systems. Caffeine can be used as an anthropogenic marker to estimate the contribution of septic tank effluent to the lake. We have modified existing analytical methods to produce a viable method for the determination of caffeine in environmental water samples and applied the method to water samples collected from Wilgreen Lake. The modified method allows determination of caffeine in a concentration range of 75 to 10,000 …

Composites of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer with two different layered double hydroxides have been obtained by melt blending and these have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, thermogravimetric analysis connected to mass spectroscopy and cone calorimetry. There is some small difference in dispersion between the zinc-containing and the magnesium-containing layered double hydroxides in EVA, but both these are microcomposites with good dispersion at the micrometer level and relatively poor dispersion at the nanometer level. There is a good reduction in the peak heat release rate at 10% LDH loading. In addition to chain stripping, which involves the …

Evaluation Of Stain Blocking Primer Coatings With Low Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Content And Effects Of Drying Conditions On The Properties Of Water Reducible Coatings For Polypropylene, Megan Alexandra Hart
Master's Theses
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) plans to reduce the volatile organic compound (VOC) limit of specialty primers, sealers, and undercoaters (SPSU), also referred to as stain blocking primers, from 350 g/L to 100 g/L in January of 2012. These coatings are primarily used as stain blocking primers over a variety of substrates, such as wood and drywall. Currently the stain blocking primers that are considered most effective are solvent based primers that contain VOC levels much higher than 100 g/L. The goal of this study is to determine if primers on the market today with a VOC content of …
