Titanium Niobium Nano Porous Materials: New Photocatalysts For Water Decontamination, Maryam Zarei Chaleshtori

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Water pollution is major environmental problem worldwide. Many common industrial organic compounds that make their way into water systems can be carcinogenic at trace levels and are difficult and costly to remove completely with conventional technologies. Because of this, authorities and researchers are trying to improve current water cleanup techniques.

Heterogeneous photocatalysts that accelerate the photocatalytic destruction of organic contaminants in water are a potentially inexpensive and highly effective way to remove both trace-level and saturated harmful compounds from industrial waste streams and drinking water. Titanium dioxide has the potential to completely mineralize organic compounds in water under ultraviolet light. …

Corrosion Protection Of Aa 2024-T3 Aluminium Alloys Using 3, 4-Diaminobenzoic Acid Chelated Zirconium-Silane Hybrid Sol-Gels, P.C. Rajath Varma, John Colreavy, John Cassidy, Mohamed Oubaha, Colette Mcdonagh, Brendan Duffy

Articles

Organic-inorganic polymers formed by hydrolysis/condensation reactions of alkoxide precursors, such as organically modified silanes (Ormosils) have found applications as electronic, optical and protective coatings. Such coatings possess important characteristics such as chemical stability, physical strength and scratch resistance. Further performance improvement is achieved through the incorporation of zirconium and titanium based nanoparticles, also formed through the sol-gel process. However due to the inherent difference in the reactivity of the precursors, the hydrolysis of each precursor must be carried out separately before being combined for final condensation. Zirconium precursors are commonly chelated using acetic acid or acetyl acetonate prior to hydrolysis, …

Silver Nanoparticle Polymer Composite Based Humidity Sensor, Aoife Power, Tony Betts, John Cassidy

Articles

Silver nanoparticles were synthesised by a chemical reduction process in order to produce an aqueous colloidal dispersion. The resulting colloids were then characterised by a combination of UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy and the nanoparticles were found to have an average diameter of 20–22 nm. The Ag/polymer nanocomposites were then applied to platinum interdigital electrodes as sensor coatings and the capability of the resulting sensor as a humidity detector investigated. With the application of 1 V, a current developed which was found to be directly proportional to humidity levels. The sensor gives a reversible, …

Measurements Of Platinum Electrode Potential In Blood And Blood Plasma And Serum, Mogely Khubutiya, Anatoly K. Evseev, Vladimir Kolesnikov, Mikhail M. Goldin, Alexei Davydov, Alexander Volkov, Andrey Stepanov

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The method of electrochemical pretreatment of platinum electrode with the goal of standardizing the initial state of electrode surface and its open-circuit potential (OCP) in the blood and other biological media is proposed. The platinum electrode potential is measured in 0.14 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution, in the blood and blood plasma and serum. By the examples of OCP measured in the blood serum of patients with acute poisoning, acute cerebral pathology and patients treated by the method of hyperbaric oxygenation, it was found that the values of blood serum OCP were different for studied pathological states and healthy people.

Garden Of The Gods At Colorado Springs: Paleozoic And Mesozoic Sedimentation And Tectonics, Marcus R. Ross, William A. Hoesch, Steven A. Austin, John H. Whitmore, Timothy L. Clarey

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Exposed along the southeast fl ank of the Colorado Front Range are rocks that beautifully illustrate the interplay of sedimentation and tectonics. Two major rangebounding faults, the Ute Pass fault and the Rampart Range fault, converge on the Garden of the Gods region west of Colorado Springs. Cambrian through Cretaceous strata upturned by these faults reveal in their grain compositions, textures, and bedforms radically different styles of sedimentation. The Cambrian/Ordovician marine transgressive deposits appear to have come to rest on a passive and tectonically inactive craton. In contrast, coarse-grained Pennsylvanian/Permian marine deposits of the Fountain Formation and Lyons Sandstone reveal …

This plan outlines strategies and methods used in an ongoing study initiated in 1999 to restore a selfsustaining population of the Plains gartersnake (Thamnophis radix) in Ohio. Restoring a self-sustaining population would require increases in the current population to where the ratios of T. radix to T. sirtalis are approximately 1:1 in multiple locations in Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area (KPWA). This ratio would be similar to what was seen earlier by Reichenbach and Dalrymple (1986) at one site in KPWA.

The plan was developed by a team of enthusiastic conservationists representing, the Division of Wildlife (ODW), the Columbus and Cleveland …

Enthalpies Of Mixing Of Water And Alkoxyethanols, John Enriquez Jan 2010

Enthalpies Of Mixing Of Water And Alkoxyethanols, John Enriquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Alkoxyethanols [CmH2m+1·(OC2H4)·OH] (conveniently abbreviated to CmE1) are a subgroup of the alkyl poly(ethylene glycol) mono-ethers. They are small relatives of a large number of non-ionic detergents. The thermodynamic properties of their mixing in water have been shown to be good sources of information about the interactions of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups with water. Theses alkoxyethanols, or glycol ethers, are the ether derivatives of ethylene glycol where one hydroxyl functional group is substituted for an alkoxy functional group. Our group has already published results for aqueous excess properties …

Throughout the world there exist both predator and prey. This distinction is apparent though sometimes misleading. Take for example marine snails of the genus Conus that are present across the oceans of the southern hemisphere [1]. These snails are slow moving animals that appear more prey than predator. However, they have evolved into effective predators through the development of venom consisting of biologically active peptides. The venom is loaded into a hollow harpoon that the snail injects into the intended prey: fish, worms, or other snails [2]. The categories of cone snails based on prey preference are piscivorous (fish eating), …

Bacteria are adapted to live in diverse environmental conditions. Thus, they show excellent tolerance and response to extreme environmental conditions caused by low or high temperatures, high salinity, reactive oxygen species or high nutrient concentrations. sRNAs have been identified and characterized as cis-acting or trans-acting post-transcriptional regulators in diverse cellular processes including virulence and adaptation to environmental stress (11,12,14,15). Interactions of sRNAs and target mRNAs result in translational repression, translational activation or/and …

An Improved Synthesis Of A Ring-C Precursor To Cobyric Acid, Hui Wang, Peter A. Jacobi Jan 2010

An Improved Synthesis Of A Ring-C Precursor To Cobyric Acid, Hui Wang, Peter A. Jacobi

Dartmouth Scholarship

Alkyne acid 10 was prepared in enantioselective fashion from allylic ester derivative (R)-18 via an E-selective Ireland-Claisen rearrangement followed by Si-assisted elimination of HBr. The present route offers significant advantages in terms of both scalability and overall yield compared to that previously described. Alkyne acid 10 is an attractive ring-C precursor for an ongoing synthesis of cobyric acid.

They showed good antimicrobial activity especially against the gram-positive bacteria tested with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values less than 4.7 \mu g/mL in most cases. The optimum length of the alkyl chain for better and broader activity is situated in the range of 8-12 carbon atoms in the series of compounds 1a-j, 2a-j. The non-alkylated compounds 1-2 were …

Heterometallic Beta-Diketonates And Oxo-Diketonates As Single Source Precursors For The Synthesis Of Oxide Materials, Haitao Zhang Jan 2010

Heterometallic Beta-Diketonates And Oxo-Diketonates As Single Source Precursors For The Synthesis Of Oxide Materials, Haitao Zhang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The focus of this investigation was to develop a simple, high-yield synthetic approach to heterometallic diketonates using the same construction principles as for their polynuclear homometallic analogs. Several low-temperature solid-state synthetic routes were suggested that appear to be general for the preparation of heterometallic diketonates incorporating a wide range of s-, p-, d-, and f-metals. Using this investigative approach, two families of bimetallic homoleptic diketonates that contain heavy main group (BiIII, PbII) and the first row divalent transition metals (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) have been obtained. The heterometallic molecules that are held together by strong Lewis acid-base …

Elucidating The Structure Of Protein Aggregates By Raman Spectroscopy, Ludmila A. Popova Jan 2010

Elucidating The Structure Of Protein Aggregates By Raman Spectroscopy, Ludmila A. Popova

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The structures and properties of amyloid fibrils are of considerable interest due to their associations with numerous neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and transmissible spongiform encephalopaties (prion diseases). Understanding fibrillogenesis at a molecular level requires detailed structural characterization of amyloid fibrils. However amyloid fibrils are difficult objects to study due to their non-crystalline and insoluble nature. These properties make the application of classical tools of structural biology, such as X-Ray crystallography and solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, impractical for structural characterization of protein fibrils.

Design And Development Of Highly Active, Nanoengineered, Platinum Based Core-Shell Electrodes For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Seth Louis Knupp

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Highly active nanoengineered core-shell electrocatalyst have a great potential to be used as fuel cell electrodes. They can alleviate problems related with commercial carbon supported platinum by simultaneously lowering cost while enhancing reaction kinetics and overall performance. More recently, use of nanoengineered core-shell electrode structures have showed their ability to enhance the stability and overall lifetime of the catalyst without sacrificing the electrode's performance. We studied the potential of using highly active core-shell nanoparticles supported on carbon nanomaterials as fuel cell electrodes.

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito Jan 2010

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Arsenic exists as many different chemical forms including inorganic, methylated and dietary species. The toxicity of these species varies: some are highly toxic and can cause adverse health effects in many parts of the body; others are considered relatively non-toxic. Monitoring arsenic exposure is usually accomplished by its direct measurement in biological fluids. Urine is the specimen of choice for assessing arsenic exposure, because of its short biological half-life in blood. There have been very few studies of arsenic species in blood, yet such research can provide valuable information on arsenic distribution and its metabolism in the body.

The Hauser's annulation and Hauser and Xu's route for C-aryl glycoside synthesis were successfully employed to prepare the linear tetracyclic anthraquinone substituted C-aryl glycoside, galtamycin as well as bis C-aryl glycosides. Synthetic studies on angucycline C104 extended the utility of both methods to structures with angular tetracyclic framework.

A Mild And Chemoselective Method For The Deprotection Of Tert-Butyldimethylsilyl (Tbdms) Ethers Using Iron(Iii) Tosylate As A Catalyst, Ram Mohan, Jason Bothwell, Veronica Angeles, James Carolan, Margaret Olson Jan 2010

A Mild And Chemoselective Method For The Deprotection Of Tert-Butyldimethylsilyl (Tbdms) Ethers Using Iron(Iii) Tosylate As A Catalyst, Ram Mohan, Jason Bothwell, Veronica Angeles, James Carolan, Margaret Olson

Scholarship

The most common method for the deprotection ofTBDMS ethers utilizes stoichiometric amounts of tetrabutylammonium fluoride, n-Bu4N+F(TBAF), which is highly corrosive and toxic. We have developed a mild and chemoselective method for the deprotection ofTBDMS, TES, and TIPS ethers using iron(III) tosylate as a catalyst. Phenolic TBDMS ethers, TBDPS ethers and the BOC group are not affected under these conditions. Iron(III) tosylate is an inexpensive, commercially available, and non-corrosive reagent.

Bismuth(Iii) Bromide In Organic Synthesis. A Catalytic Method For The Allylation Of Tetrahydrofuranyl And Tetrahydropyranyl Ethers, Ram Mohan, Scott Krabbe, Veronica Angeles

Scholarship

A bismuth bromide-catalyzed (10.0 mol %) multicomponent reaction involving the allylation of THF- and THP-ethers, followed by in situ derivatization with acetic anhydride to generate highly functionalized esters has been developed under solvent-free conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a catalytic procedure for the allylation of THF- and THP-ethers to yield ring-opened products.

Iron(Iii) Tosylate-Catalyzed Deprotection Of Aromatic Acetals In Water, Ram Mohan, Margaret Olson, James Carolan, Michael Chiodo, Phillip Lazzara

Scholarship

The deprotection of aromatic as well as conjugated acetals and ketals in water is catalyzed by iron(III) tosylate (1.0–5.0 mol %). Iron(III) tosylate is an inexpensive and readily available catalyst. The use of water, the most environmentally benign solvent, makes this procedure especially attractive for acetal deprotection.

Corrosion Of Steel Shipwreck In The Marine Environment: Uss Arizona—Part 1, Donald L. Johnson, Brent M. Wilson, James D. Carr, Matthew A. Russell, Larry E. Murphy, David L. Conlin

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The USS Arizona has remained submerged in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, since the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. The ship presents a potential hazard from fuel oil still present in the ship’s hull. As an important factor in management decisions, the effect of corrosion after nearly 65 years is being studied to determine the integrity of the ship’s structure. Coupon samples from the hull revealed decreasing corrosion rates from ~1 to 3 mpy (0.03 to 0.08 mm/y) from just below the water surface to the mudline. This is about one-third of that expected in the absence of biofouling or concretion. …

Approaches Towards The Synthesis Of Bradyoxetin, Vanildo Martins Lima Braga Jan 2010

Approaches Towards The Synthesis Of Bradyoxetin, Vanildo Martins Lima Braga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quorum sensing bacteria produce and release chemical signal molecules (like N-acyl homoserine lactones, AHL) that increase in concentration as a function of cell density. The responses cover a large spectrum of process such as the virulence in Staphylococcus aureus, competence for DNA-uptake in Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus pneumoniae, sporulation in Bacillus subtilis, conjugal plasmid transfer in Enterococcus faecalis, and bacteriocin production in lactic acid bacteria. The collapse of (AHL) signaling system in bacteria represents an attractive therapeutic approach towards the development of new antibiotics. Recently, a new extracellular modulator was isolated from a symbiotic bacterium (Bradyrhizobium japonicum) that nodulates soybean. …

Photodissociation Dynamics In Titan's Atmosphere, Welvidanalage Ruchira Silva Jan 2010

Photodissociation Dynamics In Titan's Atmosphere, Welvidanalage Ruchira Silva

Wayne State University Dissertations

Photodissociation dynamics of molecules relevant to understanding Titan's atmosphere (diacetylene, cyanoacetylene and heptane isomers) are carried out under collisionless condition using the DC slice imaging technique. In diacetylene photodissociation, two-photon processes dominate at 243 nm and 212 nm whereas at 121.6 nm, a one-photon dissociation process dominates. Direct measurement of the lifetime of metastable triplet diacetylene confirms sub-microsecond lifetimes. Photodissociation of cyanoacetylene at 193.3 nm proceeds on the S1 potential energy surface with an exit barrier. In heptane photodissociation, the dissociation occurs on the ground state or low-lying triplet states with nonradiative electronic relaxation. Time-of-flight mass spectroscopy studies in this …
