The M-superfamily, one of eight major conotoxin superfamilies found in the venom of the cone snail, contains a Cys framework with disulfide-linked loops labeled 1, 2, and 3 (- CC1C2C3CC-). M-superfamily conotoxins can be divided into the m-1, -2, -3 and -4 branches, based upon the number of residues located in the third Cys loop between the fourth and fifth Cys residues. Here we provide a three-dimensional solution structure for the m-1 conotoxin tx3a found in the venom of Conus textile. The 15 amino acid peptide, CCSWDVCDHPSCTCC, has disulfide bonds between Cys1 …

Recent studies exhibit that 4-hydroxyphenylretinamide (4HPR) decreases aromatase activity in breast and placental cells. The effect of synthetic 4HPR analogs on aromatase and expression was examined in three breast cancer cell lines. Most derivatives did not decrease cellular aromatase activity. Two of the analogs even stimulated aromatase activity at the transcriptional level. Only one derivative significantly decreased aromatase in all three breast cancer cell lines and also suppressed CYP19 gene expression in one of the cell line. Placental microsomal aromatase assay rule out the possibility that this compound directly inhibits the aromatase enzyme. A non-genomic mechanism in suppression of cellular …

SR141716 (rimonabant) is an endocannabinoid receptor antagonist. Endocannabinoids are a class of chemicals that affect neurotransmission via G-protein coupled CB1 (brain) and CB2 (peripheral tissue) receptors. Numerous animal studies have shown that SR141716 binds with the CB1 receptor in the brain, resulting in several biological consequences including reduced alcohol intake and reward as well as reduced food consumption. In this work, an analytical method based on liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI-MS/MS) has been developed and validated for the quantitative measurement of SR141716 in both human and rat plasma to support the investigation of this compound. A …

The pigment Isorhodopsin, an analogue of the visual pigment Rhodopsin, is investigated via quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics computations based on an ab initio multiconfigurational quantum chemical, treatment. The limited <5 kcal mol(-1) error found for the spectral parameters allows for a nearly quantitative analysis of the excited-state structure and reactivity of its 9-cis-retinal chromophore. We demonstrate that, similar to Rhodopsin, Isorhodopsin features a shallow photoisomerization path. However, the structure of the reaction coordinate appears to be reversed. In fact, while the coordinate still corresponds to an asynchronous crankshaft motion, the dominant isomerization component involves a counterclockwise, rather than clockwise, twisting of the 9-cis bond. Similarly, the minor component involves a clockwise, rather than counterclockwise, twisting of the 11-trans bond. Ultimately, these results indicate that Rhodopsin and Isorhodopsin relax along a common excited-state potential energy valley starting from opposite ends. The fact that the central and lowest energy region of such valley runs along a segment of the intersection space between the ground and excited states of the protein explains why the pigments decay at distinctive conical intersection structures.

Aqueous degradation rates, which include hydrolysis and epimerization, for chlorretracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TET), lincomycin (LNC), sulfachlorpyridazine (SCP), sulfadimethoxine (SDM), sulfathiazole (STZ), trimethoprim (TRM), and tylosin a (TYL) were studied as a function of ionic strength (0.0015, 0.050, or 0.084 mg/L as Na2HPO4), temperature (7, 22, and 35°C), and pH (2, 5, 7, 9, and 11). Multiple linear regression revealed that ionic strength did not significantly affect (α = 0.05) degradation rates for all compounds, but temperature and pH affected rates for CTC, OTC, and TET significand (α = 0.05). Degradation also was observed for TYL at pH 2 …

We have studied the crystal structure of fully deuterated BH3NH3 using powder neutron diffraction at different temperatures. It is evident that an order-disorder phase transition occurs around 225 K. At low temperature, the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure with space group Pnm21 and gradually transforms to a high temperature tetragonal structure with space group I4 mm above 225 K. At 16 K, the BD3-ND3 unit stacks along the c axis with a tilt angle of about 16° between the N-B bond and the c axis. As the temperature is increased, the BD3-ND3 groups start to reorient along the c …

Using β-sitosterol as a starting material, (6E)-hydroximino-24-ethylcholest-4-en-3-one (1), a natural steroidal oxime from Cinachyrella alloclada and C. apion, was synthesized in four steps with a high overall yield. First, β-sitosterol (5a) is transformed into the corresponding 24-ethylcholest-4-en-3,6-dione (6a) via oxidation with pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC). Selective reduction of 6a by NaBH4 in the presence of CoCl2 gives 24-ethylcholest- 4-en-3β-ol-6-one (7a). The reaction of 7a with hydroxylamine hydrochloride offers the oxime 8a and the oxidation of 8a by Jones reagent gives the target steroid 1. (6E)-Hydroximinocholest-4-en-3-one (2) and (6E)-hydroximino-24-ethylcholest-4,22-dien-3-one (4) were synthesized by a similar method. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds …

ZrNx films are deposited by rf magnetron sputtering using a wide range of nitrogen flow rates to control film properties. Scanned probe microscope (SPM) oxidation is presented as a complimentary characterization tool to x-ray diffraction, colorimetric, and four point probe analyses. The SPM oxidation behavior of the ZrNx films is related to their structural, optical, and electrical properties. Whereas stoichiometric ZrN films have applications as protective and/or decorative coatings, ZrNx films sputtered with higher nitrogen flow rates have potential applications in devices where arrays of high aspect ratio nanostructures would be useful. Inhibition Mechanism Of The Imidazoline Derivate In H2S Solution, Jing-Mao Zhao, He-Xia Liu, Chao Xiao, Yuan Lu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Weight-loss method and polarization curve measurement were employed to study the inhibition mechanism of imidazoline derivate for mild steel in acidic solution with H2S. The results show that the derivate can retard the cathodic process, and belongs to the cathodic-type inhibitor. The adsorption of the derivate on the surface of mild steel accords with the amended Langmuir adsorption isothermal equation, and higher temperature will facilitate its adsorption. The changes in the apparent activation energy(Ea) and the pre-exponential factor(A) of the corrosion reaction before and after the addition of inhibitor were also discussed.

Two kinds of the cobalt oxyhydroxide conductive networks in foam nickel electrodes were prepared by different methods i.e.the electrochemical-oxidation(EO) and chemical-oxidation(CO) and which redox behaviors were studied by using cyclic voltammetry and X-ray diffraction measurements. The results show that the CoOOH(CO) has better redox reversibility than CoOOH(EO) and the structure of the former can be kept when nickel electrodes are subjected to a negative potential.Thus,98.7% capacity retention is demonstrated on nickel/metal-hydride batteries with CoOOH(CO) conductive network after being imposed over-discharge state storage;on the contrary, only 83.3% capacity retention is found on the batteries with CoOOH(EO) conductive network.

The interfacial electrochemical behaviors of fibrinogen on Pt electrode in phosphate buffered solution(PBS) was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical in-situ FTIR spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry results demonstrated that the fibrinogen adsorb on Pt electrode and impede the interfacial charge transfer of hydrogen ion reaction process as well as of oxygen reduction process, which is increased with higher scan rate. The cyclic voltammetry spectra of platinum absorbed with fibrinogen in K3[Fe(CN)6] and K4[Fe(CN)6]·3H2O solutions shows that the fibrinogen can partly decrease the oxidation and reduction current peaks. There is no specific anodic and …
