Elliptical Micro-Ring Organic Lasers, P. R. Korade, John Ballato, R, V. Gregory Jan 2007

Elliptical Micro-Ring Organic Lasers, P. R. Korade, John Ballato, R, V. Gregory

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Multimode laser action was observed from optically excited 2,5-dioctyloxy poly(para-phenylene-vinylene), DOO-PPV, micro-rings coaxially deposited around glass optical fibres of elliptical cross-section. The laser emission was found to be dependent upon the incident angle of the excitation and exhibited linewidths of approximately 1.2 Å, quality factors (Q) exceeding 5000, and thresholds below 0.3 μJ pulse. Such elliptical organic micro-ring lasers offer increased tailorability in emission properties over more conventional analogues of circular cross-section. Also discussed is the potential for such low-threshold lasers to serve as integrated sources for fibre lasers and amplifiers.

Direct Formation Of H_2o_2 From H_2 And O_2, Meltem Yildiz, Ayşe Ni̇lgün Akin

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The direct combination of hydrogen and oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide in liquid media with prepared catalysts was carried out in a slurry reactor at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. An O_2/H_2 ratio of 2:1 with a 50 mL/min flow rate was used in these experiments. Catalyst activity measurements were tested by the iodometric titration method using KMnO_4. The results are discussed based on the effects of support material, catalyst preparation method, reaction time, and medium (type of halide and acid) on hydrogen peroxide yield in direct oxidation of hydrogen to produce hydrogen peroxide. Our results showed that the catalytic …

Low Temperature Co Oxidation Kinetics Over Activated Carbon Supported Pt-Sno_X Catalysts, Fatma Soyal Baltacioğlu, Berri̇n Gülyüz, Ahmet Erhan Aksoylu, Zeynep İlsen Önsan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of low temperature CO oxidation were studied over sequentially impregnated 1wt%Pt-0.25wt%SnO_x supported on HNO_3-oxidized activated carbon (AC3) using a wide range of CO (1-10 mol%) and O_2 (1-4 mol%) concentrations. Intrinsic kinetic data were obtained in the initial rates region at 383 K in the absence and presence of 5-45 mol% H_2 in the feed. A power-function rate expression with positive dependence on CO (0.96) and negative dependence on oxygen (--0.31) was obtained for the low temperature oxidation of CO. The effect of H_2 on CO oxidation rates was also investigated under similar conditions.

Kinetic Study Of Selective Co Oxidation Over Pt-Co-Ce/Al_2o_3 Catalyst In Hydrogen-Rich Streams, Göktuğ Nezi̇hi̇ Özyönüm, Ayşe Ni̇lgün Akin, Ramazan Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of the selective CO oxidation was studied in a fixed-bed microreactor at atmospheric pressure over Pt-Co-Ce/Al_2O_3 catalyst, which was prepared using the incipient to wetness co-impregnation technique. Intrinsic kinetic data were obtained in the initial rate region using 8 different sets of CO and O_2 concentrations, each at 2 space times, i.e. 2 catalyst loadings, at 110 °C. The kinetic models based on elementary reaction steps were constructed and tested using nonlinear regression analysis with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The alternative models proposed for the similar catalytic systems in the literature were also tested. It was found that Pt-Co-Ce/Al_2O_3 acts …

Direct Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Palladium-Incorporated Silicate-Structured Mesoporous Catalysts, Canan Şener, Ti̇mur Doğu, Gülşen Doğu Jan 2007

Direct Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Palladium-Incorporated Silicate-Structured Mesoporous Catalysts, Canan Şener, Ti̇mur Doğu, Gülşen Doğu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Pd-Si-structured novel mesoporous nanocomposite catalytic materials, having quite high Pd/Si ratios, were synthesized by an acidic direct hydrothermal synthesis route. The nanocomposite catalytic materials were then characterized by XRD, XPS, EDS, nitrogen adsorption, and SEM techniques. Unlike MCM-41, the XRD patterns indicated a rather wide d_{(100)} band at a 2\theta value of about 1.9. The materials, with very high Pd/Si wt ratios between 1.43 and 2.66, were synthesized and had BJH surface area values between 600 and 200 m^2/g. The pore size distributions of these materials were also quite narrow, indicating pores between 2 and 7 nm.

Preparation And Morphological Characterization Of A Catalytic Soot Oxidation Sic Foam Filter, Başar Çağlar, Deni̇z Üner

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The coating characteristics of Pb-Co mixed metal oxide soot oxidation catalysts over a SiC foam filter were studied. The coating was done via incipient wetness impregnation of a slurry with Pb/Co weight ratio = 2. The coating was accomplished by 3 consecutive impregnation-drying-calcination cycles. After each cycle surface structure and composition were monitored by scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM analysis revealed that the surface composition of Pb was high on the high porosity region and surface composition of Co was high on the low porosity region inside the filter. These overlayers were tested for their soot oxidation ability by depositing …

Preparation And Characterization Of Ordered Tio_2 Photocatalysts: Films And Mesoporous Structures, Orçun Ergün, Osman Karslioğlu, Ayşen Yilmaz, Deni̇z Üner

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two different ordered TiO_2 structures were prepared as sol-gel films coated on glass and as mesoporous structures in order to study the effect, in 2-D or in 3-D, of bulk size on photocatalytic activity. Multilayer TiO_2 films were coated on glass by the sol-gel dip coating method. The UV-VIS characteristics of the films, with respect to the number of coating layers, were monitored. UV-VIS measurements implied an ordered TiO_2 structure grown on ITO glass. The second approach involved loading TiO_2 in mesoporous SBA-15 powder. Ti-SBA-15 with Ti/Si (mole/mole) ratios between 0.05 and 0.30 were prepared and characterized by XRD and …

Examination Of Some Commercial Sorptive Organobentonites, Müşerref Önal Jan 2007

Examination Of Some Commercial Sorptive Organobentonites, Müşerref Önal

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

For controlling organophilic partition nanophase (OPN) formation in some commercial sorptive organobentonites (OBs), 4 sample were selected randomly and examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), element analysis (EA), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption (N_2-AD) techniques. Since the d(001) values of the OB samples are between 1.94 and 3.36 nm, the pseudotrilayer or paraffin-type alkylammonium configuration located between the 2:1 layers of smectites is dominant. The bending and stretching type FTIR bands of the smectite surface and alkylammonium cations (AACs) are evidence of the formation of the OPN in the OBs. …

The Effect Of Ionic Electrolytes And Ph On The Zeta Potential Of Fine Coal Particles, Kemal Doymuş Jan 2007

The Effect Of Ionic Electrolytes And Ph On The Zeta Potential Of Fine Coal Particles, Kemal Doymuş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Many environmental problems are attributed to coal combustion and utilization, a subject receiving increasing attention worldwide. Some of these problems could be minimized or even avoided if coal cleaning, properly applied, was considered an economical and effective technique for removing hazardous elements or reducing their concentrations before combustion. The coal samples used in this study were separated into particle sizes of 4, 12, and 40 mesh. Then these samples were subjected to sink-float treatment in a ZnCl_2 solution of 1.3 density. The sample used for zeta potential determination was prepared by grinding both sink and float coal samples down to …

The Direct Electrochemical Synthesis Of Ti(Ii), Fe(Ii), Cd(Ii), Sn(Ii), And Pb(Ii) Complexes With N, N´-Bis(Salicylidene)-O-Phenylenediamine, Jianning Liu, Bing Zhang, Bowan Wu, Kejun Zhang, Shenli Hu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The electrochemical oxidation of anodic Ti, Fe, Cd, Sn, and Pb (=M) into acetonitrile solutions of N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-o-phenylenediamine [SalophH_2] gives the corresponding M(Saloph) complexes in high yield. The mechanism of the electrochemical reactions is discussed. SalophH_2 forms complexes (1:1 molar ratio) with titanium, iron, cadmium, tin, and lead ions. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity measurements, and infrared and electronic spectral data. The SalophH_2 complexes of iron(II) and cadmium(II) have been further identified by ^1H-NMR and mass spectra.

Preconcentration Of Trace Elements On Amberlite Xad-4 Resin Functionalised With 1,2-Bis (O-Aminophenylthio) Ethane And Their Determination By Faas In Environmental Samples, Ömer Dalman, Volkan Numan Bulut, İsmai̇l Deği̇rmenci̇oğlu, Mehmet Tüfekçi̇

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The use of chemically modified XAD-4-1,2-bis (o-aminophenylthio) ethane chelating resin for preconcentrating Cr^{6+}, Mn^{2+}, Fe^{3+}, Co^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Ni^{2+} was studied using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) for metal monitoring in environmental samples. Cd^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Ni^{2+} ions were quantitatively recovered at the rate of 96.0%, 101.0%, 101.0%, and 95.0%, respectively (RSD < 5%), from the studied solutions. The procedure is based on the retention of analytes on a short column of 1,2-bis (o-aminophenylthio) ethane-XAD-4 chelating resin from a buffered sample solution and subsequent elution with 1 M HNO_3. Various parameters, such as pH, eluent type, and concentration, flow rate of sample solution and matrix interference effect on the retention of the metal ions have been studied. The optimum pH for the sorption of the above-mentioned metal ions was about 6. The adsorption and batch capacity of adsorbent and loading half time (t_{1/2}) for Ni^{2+}, Zn^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, and Pb^{2+} were established. The limit of detection was 3.0 \mu g L^{-1} for Pb^{2+} and Ni^{2+}, 0.6 \mu g L^{-1} for Cd^{2+}, and 0.3 \mu g L^{-1} for Zn^{2+}. The validation of the procedure was carried out by analysis of certified reference materials and standard addition. The proposed enrichment method was applied to environmental samples from Trabzon.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Multidentate N-ligands (Schiff bases) were prepared by the condensation of 2-acetylpyridine or 2-benzoylpyridine, and 1,2-diaminoethane or 1,6-diaminohexane (2:1 ratio) in ethanol. These ligands were reacted with Mo(CO)_6 to obtain dinuclear metal tetracarbonyl compounds. Both terminal amine groups were seen to form imines from the reaction of mono-ketones with diamines in 2:1 or 1:1 ratios. The structures of these ligands and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, and LC-MS spectral techniques. N,N'-bis[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]ethane-1, 2-diamine, which was obtained by the reaction of 2-acetylpyridine and 1,2-diaminoethane, was also characterized by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The crystal packing is …

Coupling Coherence Distinguishes Structure Sensitivity In Protein Electron Transfer, Tatiana Prytkova, Igor V. Kurnikov, David Beratan

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum mechanical analysis of electron tunneling in nine thermally fluctuating cytochrome b562 derivatives reveals two distinct protein-mediated coupling limits. A structure-insensitive regime arises for redox partners coupled through dynamically averaged multiple-coupling pathways (in seven of the nine derivatives) where heme-edge coupling leads to the multiple-pathway regime. A structure-dependent limit governs redox partners coupled through a dominant pathway (in two of the nine derivatives) where axial-ligand coupling generates the single-pathway limit and slower rates. This two-regime paradigm provides a unified description of electron transfer rates in 26 ruthenium-modified heme and blue-copper proteins, as well as in numerous photosynthetic proteins.

Use Of The Mitsunobu Reaction In The Synthesis Of Orthogonally Protected A,B-Diaminopropionic Acids, Fintan Kelleher, Keith Ó Proinsias Jan 2007

Use Of The Mitsunobu Reaction In The Synthesis Of Orthogonally Protected A,B-Diaminopropionic Acids, Fintan Kelleher, Keith Ó Proinsias

Articles

Orthogonally protected a,b-diaminopropionic acids have been synthesised in good yields by the reaction of N-trityl L-serine esters with N-substituted sulfonamides under Mitsunobu reaction conditions (DEAD, PPh3, THF). The best isolated yields were obtained when N-Boc p-toluenesulfonamide was used as the nitrogen nucleophile precursor in the Mitsunobu reaction. Subsequently, the N-trityl group was efficiently replaced with the more stable allyloxycarbonyl (alloc) group.

An Experiment Using A Simple Photoassisted Fuel Cell Designed To Remediate Simulated Wastewater, John Cassidy, Faisa Touati, Kevin Mcguigan

Articles

Work in photochemistry work peaked in the 1980’s where there was the prospect of using sunlight shining on suspensions of titanium dioxide in order to catalytically cleave water into hydrogen and oxygen [1-5]. In this way a clean and efficient method of producing hydrogen as a fuel was envisaged. However, there was a requirement to use a rather high energy light to achieve the splitting and it was not as efficient with visible light[5]. Doped TiO2 layers have been used in a three electrode system for formic acid degradation[6]. In this work, the system uses an electrode coated with TiO2 …

Fast-Scan Cyclic Voltammetry - Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Luis Díaz-Ballote, Mario A. Apuche-Avlles, David O. Wipf

CAS Publications

The use of fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) to generate images in scanning electrochemical microscopy is demonstrated. In the FSCV-SECM method a cyclic voltammogram is acquired at each grid point of the scanned area. Thus, each point in the SECM image is a data array rather than a single value. This provides a significant increase in the amount of data collected per scan and provides the ability to make images of multiple analytes per scan. In addition, the use of cyclic voltammetry allows images based on adsorptive as well as diffusional processes. In this paper, we describe the FSCV-SECM experiment …

Iron(Iii) P-Toluenesulfonate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Homoallyl Ethers From Acetals And Aldehydes, Ram Mohan, Matthew Spafford, Erin Anderson, Joshua Lacey, Ann Palma Jan 2007

Iron(Iii) P-Toluenesulfonate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Homoallyl Ethers From Acetals And Aldehydes, Ram Mohan, Matthew Spafford, Erin Anderson, Joshua Lacey, Ann Palma

Scholarship

Iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate, Fe(OTs)3.6H20, is an inexpensive, versatile and commercially available catalyst for the allylation of acetals using allyltrimethylsilane to yield homoallyl ethers in moderate to good yields. The one-pot conversion of aldehydes to homoallyl ethers using alkoxysilanes has also been accomplished using Fe(OTs)3.6H20 as a catalyst. The use of mild reaction conditions and a relatively non-corrosive catalyst make this method an attractive option for the synthesis of a range of homoallyl ethers.

Reactivity Of Ionic Liquids, Ram Mohan, Shahana Chowdhury, Janet Scott Jan 2007

Reactivity Of Ionic Liquids, Ram Mohan, Shahana Chowdhury, Janet Scott

Scholarship

Ionic liquids are becoming widely used in synthetic organic chemistry and yet relatively little attention has been paid to the intrinsic reactivity of these low temperature molten salts. Clues to the non-innocent nature of many ionic liquids are contained in the reports of altered reactivity of dissolved substrates, unexpected catalytic activity and unforeseen by-product formation. In this review, we focus on the reactivity of ionic liquids, as opposed to reactivity in ionic liquids (although discussion of the latter is often included where it aids understanding of the former).

Activated Carbon Open Circuit Potential Shifts In Aqueous Solutions, Mikhail M. Goldin, Gary Blanchard, Alexander Volkov, Mogely Khubutiya, Vladimir Kolesnikov, Anatoly Evseev, Mark Goldin Jan 2007

Activated Carbon Open Circuit Potential Shifts In Aqueous Solutions, Mikhail M. Goldin, Gary Blanchard, Alexander Volkov, Mogely Khubutiya, Vladimir Kolesnikov, Anatoly Evseev, Mark Goldin

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Interaction of certain organic compounds with activated carbon and its effect on the carbon open circuit potentials were studied. It was shown that shifts in open circuit potentials depended on the filling of the activated carbon surface. Whereas adsorption of the investigated compounds on the carbon led to positive potential shifts, their elimination (desorption) from carbon surface led to shifts in the opposite direction. It was also observed that the time dependence of potential shifts is similar for different carbon brands. The magnitude of shifts depended on adsorption activity and porometric characteristics of the carbon adsorbent, as well as the …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The iron-57 Mössbauer spectra of the GdCo4-xFexB compounds, where x is 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 1, 2, 2.5, and 2.6, have been measured at room temperature and reveal relatively small iron hyperfine fields of approximately 12-18 T, relatively large quadrupole interactions of approximately +0.9 and -1 mm/s, and three very different types of spectra for x=0.10 and 0.15, x=0.25, 1, and 2, and x=2.5 and 2.6. The differences result from both the different easy magnetization directions in these compounds and the different cobalt and/or iron occupancies of the crystallographic 2c and 6i sites. The spectra have …

World Bank -Cpa Conflict: The Struggle To Define Human Rights And Development In The Philippines, Adam B. Robbins

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the interactions between the World Bank (hereafter, the Bank) and the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), an indigenous and environmental advocacy group based in the Cordillera region of Luzon, in the Philippines. Using data gathered through both text-based and participatory research methods, I analyze the discursive relationship and violent confrontations between the two organizations. Conflicting development and human rights values cause the majority of these conflicts. I focus on how each organization enacts development and human rights, and how this leads to conflict. Ultimately, I intend for this thesis to offer practical guidance for the reader involved in …

Senescence is a permanent growth arrest that restricts the lifespan of primary cells in culture, and represents an in vitro model for aging. Senescence functions as a tumor suppressor mechanism that can be induced independent of replicative crisis by diverse stress stimuli. RNase-L mediates antiproliferative activities and functions as a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer, therefore, we examined a role for RNase-L in cellular senescence and aging. Ectopic expression of RNase-L induced a senescent morphology, a decrease in DNA synthesis, an increase in senescence-associated -galactosidase activity, and accelerated replicative senescence. In contrast, senescence was retarded in RNase-L-null fibroblasts compared with …

Analysis Of Mitochondrial Dna Coding Region Snps By Pyrosequencing, Kyle Robert Carl Parker Jan 2007

Analysis Of Mitochondrial Dna Coding Region Snps By Pyrosequencing, Kyle Robert Carl Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To date, the use of mitochondrial DNA in forensic analysis has relied on the presence of variations in the control region to differentiate between samples. One problem that this analysis has shown is the occurrence of common Haplogroup H haplotypes or identical sequences. Thus, there is a need to enhance the distinguishing power of this type of analysis. One option has been to investigate the mitochondrial coding region for polymorphisms that could differentiate between samples with identical control region haplotypes. The goal of this study has been to identify polymorphic coding region sites for development in a Pyrosequencing assay that …

Forensic Analysis Of C-4 And Commercial Blasting Agents For Possible Discrimination, Katie Steele Jan 2007

Forensic Analysis Of C-4 And Commercial Blasting Agents For Possible Discrimination, Katie Steele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The criminal use of explosives has increased in recent years. Political instability and the wide spread access to the internet, filled with "homemade recipes," are two conjectures for the increase. C-4 is a plastic bonded explosive (PBX) comprised of 91% of the high explosive RDX, 1.6% processing oils, 5.3% plasticizer, and 2.1% polyisobutylene (PIB). C-4 is most commonly used for military purposes, but also has found use in commercial industry as well. Current methods for the forensic analysis of C-4 are limited to identification of the explosive; however, recent publications have suggested the plausibility of discrimination between C-4 samples based …
