Hydrophobic Guar Gum Derivatives Prepared By Controlled Grafting Processes For Hydraulic Facturing Applications, Ahmad Bahamdan

The synthesis of new water soluble guar gum derivatives is described. Introduction of polyalkoxyalkyleneamide grafts to guar gum or hydroxyopropyl guar was achieved in a three step process: carboxymethylation with sodium chloroacetate, esterification with dimethyl sulfate and amidation with a series of polyalkoxyalkylene-amines. The process steps were followed using infrared spectroscopy; the grafted guar derivatives were characterized using FT-IR and 1H NMR. A series of hydroxypropyl guar derivatives with degrees of carboxymethylations ranging from 0.15-0.25 were modified with polyalkoxyalkyleneamines with molecular weights ranging from 300-3000. The stereoselective construction of the tricyclic ring system of asteriscanolide from cyclooctadiene has been achieved. The synthesis involves two main steps; the synthesis of the aldehyde precursor(5)and the titanium-mediated cabocyclization of 5 to make the three rings of 43 stereoselectively.

The influence of shear on viscoelastic solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and clay (Cloisite, CNA) was investigated by rheology and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) under shear. These measurements determined the shear-induced orientation of the clay and the polymer as well as their relaxation behavior after cessation of shear. Comparison of PEO-CNA solutions (~100 nm diameter platelets) to previously studied PEO-Laponite gels (~30 nm diameter platelets) found that the orientation of CNA platelets occurs at much lower shear rates. 5-Hydroxysalicyliden-p-aminoacetophenoneoxime (LH) was synthesized starting from p-aminoacetophenoneoxime and 5-hydroxysalicylaldehyde. Complexes of this ligand with Co^{+2}, Ni^{+2}, Cu^{+2} and Zn^{+2} salts were prepared. With this ligand, complexes were synthesized using Co^{+2}, Ni^{+2}, Cu^{+2} and Zn^{+2} salt with a metal:ligand ratio of 1:2. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of elemental analyses, IR, ^1H- and ^{13}C-NMR, electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements, molar conductivity and thermogravimetric analyses.

In this study, direct measurements of the air/ sea flux of acetone were made over the North Pacific Ocean. The results demonstrate that the net flux of acetone is into, rather than out of the oceans. The extrapolated global ocean uptake of 48 Tg yr(-1) requires a major revision of the atmospheric acetone budget. This result is consistent with a recent reevaluation of acetone photodissociation quantum yields.

In oncologic applications of photodynamic therapy (PDT), the discriminating localization of porphyrin-type compounds in solid tumors is exploited for the selective ablation of neoplastic tissue with minimal destruction and irritation to normal tissue. PDT is a locoregional, binary cancer therapy in which a photosensitizer—light-activated drug—absorbs light of an appropriate wavelength and excites to the singlet state. This photosensitizer in the excited singlet state can undergo an internal transition to the excited triplet state, a relatively long-lived and high-energy species that transfers its excess energy to molecular oxygen. The synthesis of the new aryl bis(β-diketone) ligand m-phenylenebis(acetylacetone) (m-pbaH2) allowed for complexation with copper(II) to form a 4-membered ring Cu4(m-pba)4. An alternate route, via a phospholene adduct, was implemented after difficulties in preparing the ligand via an azo sulfide conversion from m-phenylenediamine. The connection of two m-pba ligands coordinated to a Cu(II) metal ion causes a distortion along the axial position of the metal center. The pore has a diameter of (Cu-----Cu = 14.317 Å) when viewing opposite metal centers. An open coordination site along Cu(II) axial position may facilitate host-guest binding interactions. The existence of shape selectivity in non-covalent molecularly imprinted polymers has been proven using molecular probes. A series of amines varying with different structural motifs and secondary amines with different sized side chains were imprinted, and binding evaluated by HPLC for each amine on polymers imprinted with similar amines. Trends in the binding relationships revealed two major contributions of cavity structure on selectivity afforded by molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). First, sterics play a dominant role in cases where a molecules structure is too big too fit into an imprinted site formed from a smaller template molecule. Second, molecular structures that …

Photopolymers have been the subject of special attention in the last two decades. The advantage of being self-developing makes them a practical alternative to silver halide photographic emulsions in holographic interferometry applications. This thesis is aimed at understanding diffusion properties and optimization of an acrylamide-based green sensitized photopolymer material for reflection holographic recording. The composition of the photopolymer includes a green sensitive dye (erythrosine B), acrylamide (monomer), electron donor (triethanolamine) a cross linking monomer (NN’methylenebisacrylamide) and a binder (polyvinyl alcohol). Two novel fluorescent cyanine-AMP conjugates, F550/570 and F650/670, have been synthesized to serve as transcription initiators under the T7 φ2.5 promoter. Efficient fluorophore labeling of 5′ RNA is achieved in a single transcription step by including F550/570 and F650/670 in the transcription solution. The current work makes fluorescently labeled RNA readily available for broad applications in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology and biomedicine. In particular, site-specifically fluorophore-labeled large RNAs prepared by the current method may be used to investigate RNA structure, folding and mechanism by various fluorescence techniques. The structural and electronic properties of Gd2(Ti1−yZry)2O7 (y=0–1) pyrochlores following a 2.0-MeV Au2+ ion-beam irradiation (~5.0 X 1014 Au2+/cm2) have been investigated by Ti 2p and O 1s near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS). The fragmentation dynamics of core-excited H2S has been studied by means of partial anion and cation yield measurements around the S L2,3-subshell ionization thresholds. All detectable ionic fragments are reported, and significant differences between partial ion yields are observed. Possible dissociation pathways are discussed by comparison to previous studies of electron spectra.

Some kaurane diterpenoids were isolated from 3 species of the genus Sideritis (Lamiaceae) growing in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Sideritis libanotica subsp. libanotica contained siderol 2 and sideridiol 3. Sideritis erythrantha var. erythrantha yielded sideridiol 3. Sideritis perfoliata gave siderol 2, sideridiol 3 and sideritriol 4. The products are known as they occur in another species of Sideritis growing in Italy and in other species growing also in Turkey. The products are isolated for the first time from these 3 species. The taxonomic significance of these results is discussed.

Alumina powder is impregnated with cobalt in the concentration range 5% to 20% (w/v) and is characterized by nitrogen adsorption at 77 K by continuous flow method using the Quantasorb sorption system. It was observed that cobalt metal on impregnation does not contribute any extra surface to alumina. Values of BET surface area determined from nitrogen adsorption data follow the sequence Co (20% w/v) - Al_2O_3 < Co (10% w/v) - Al_2O_3 < Co (5% w/v) - Al_2O_3 < Pure Al_2O_3. Pore size distribution curves demonstrate the mesoporous nature of cobalt impregnated alumina.

Three novel vic-dioxime compounds and their transition metal complexes were synthesized for the first time. These ligands are anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2), anti-2-pyridinealdehydeglyoxime hydrazone (PyGH_2) and anti-2-furancarboxaldehydeglyoxime hydrazone (FGH_2). The synthesized anti-glyoximehydrazine was reacted with 2-pyridinealdehyde or 2-furancarboxaldehyde to obtain the PyGH_2 and FGH_2 ligands. Mononuclear complexes of these ligands with a metal-ligand ratio of 1:2 were prepared with Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) ions. The structures of the ligands and complexes were determined by ^1H n.m.r, i.r spectroscopy and elemental analytical techniques.

Phthalic anhydride was reacted with L-Valine and L-Leucine in a mixture of acetic acid and pyridine at room temperature, and then was refluxed at 90-100 °C and N-phthaloyl-L-valine or N-phthaloyl-L-leucine were obtained in quantitative yields. The imide-acids were converted to N-phthaloyl-L-valine acid chloride and N-phthaloyl-L-leucine acid chloride by reaction with thionyl chloride. Then 2 new derivatives of the chiral isocoumarin with L-valine and L-leucine moieties were synthesised by the condensation reaction of homophthalic acid with respective imide-acid chloride. A new series of flavonyl pro-drug esters of ampicillin (Va-b) was prepared by condensing the appropriate bromomethyl flavone with ampicillin trihydrate potassium salt. Flavone derivatives and ampicillin both have good antibacterial activity. The synthesized compounds were tested for their antifungal and antibacterial activities in vitro. Both of the compounds were active against Candida krusei and Staphylococcus aureus.

The catalytic effect of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) on the oxidation of sulfanilic acid by hydrogen peroxide was studied. The reaction was followed spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance of the reaction product at 360 nm. Under the optimum conditions 2 calibration graphs (for chromium(III) up to 100 ng mL^{-1}, and for chromium(VI) up to 200 ng mL^{-1}) were obtained, using the ``fixed time'' method with detection limits of 4.9 ng mL^{-1} and 3.8 ng mL^{-1}, respectively. Proton conducting properties of benzimidazole (BnIm) doped poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA) were studied. The doping ratio, x, which is the number of moles of BnIm per mole of polymer repeat unit, varied from 0.5 to 2. The samples were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and impedance spectroscopy. The IR study indicates the protonation of heterocyclic units from the "free nitrogen" side. The proton conductivity and thermal stability of the blends increase with x. Maximum conductivity of PVPA x BnIm blends is approximately 10^{-3} S/cm at 150 °C.

[CrFe_2O(AcO)_6(TEP)_3]Cl, (1), and [CrFe_2O(AcO)_6(TMP)_3]Cl, (2), were prepared by replacing 3 water molecules in the [CrFe_2O(AcO)_6(H_2O)_3]Cl complex with triethyl- and trimethyl-phosphates, respectively. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed an oxo-centered, carboxylate-bridged, heteronuclear triangular structure for the title compounds. M_3O and MO_4 units adopted D_{3h} and D_{4h} local symmetry, respectively, and are surrounded by 6 bridging acetates with C_{2v} local symmetry.

The synthesis of a novel series of Mannich bases of 5-methyl-3-substituted piperazinomethyl-2-benzoxazolinones is described. The structures attributed to compounds 3c, 3d and 3f-3n were elucidated using IR and ^1H NMR spectroscopic techniques as well as elemental analysis. The compounds were examined for their in vivo anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities in 2 different bioassays, namely, carrageenan-induced hind paw edema and p-benzoquinone-induced abdominal constriction tests in mice, respectively. Organotin carboxylates of general formula R_3SnL (1), (2), (4) and (6), R_2SnL_2 (5) and {[(R_2SnL)_2O]_2} (3), where L = N-maleoylglycinate, N-maleoyl-\beta-alaninate and N-maleoylmethioninate, were prepared. The synthesis of these compounds was achieved by either reaction of organotin halides, R_3SnCl, with triethylammonium salt of N-maleoylamino acids or/and organotin oxides, (R_3Sn)_2O and R_2SnO, with maleamic acid in the presence of triethyl amine. Reductions of benzene, toluene, ortho-xylene, cumene, anisole and benzoic acid to corresponding nonconjugated dienes were realized at room temperature by gas NH_3 and Li. The reduced products were easily isolated because THF and dioxane were dissolved in the water. The yields and conversions of the reactions were 70-89% and 80-100%, respectively.

An isonicotinic acid N-oxide Zn(II) compound was characterized on the basis of elemental analysis. FTIR spectra of the compound and free isonicotinic acid N-oxide (INO) were recorded in the range 4000--400 cm^{-1}. Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra from the Zn(INO)_2 complex were recorded. The luminescence data were interpreted in terms of the emission band at 470 nm. The green luminescence (\sim 470 nm) arises from Zn^{2+} transition ^4T_1 (^4G) \to ^6A_1 (^6S). The transfer of electrons to the dications of viologens including methyl viologen, diquat, benzyl viologen and n-butyl viologen was studied at the surface of a platinum disk electrode. The rate constants for the processes were determined and the effects of solvent, temperature and working electrode studied. The studies showed that the rate constants increase with temperature and the effect of solvent on the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant is related to the polarity, dielectric constant and viscosity of the solvent and on the electrode material. Several indium ion selective electrodes were constructed based on 15-crown-5 (15C5), dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH18C6) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) as sensors and di-octyl phenyl phosphonate (DOPP), di-butyl phthalate (DBPH), tri-butyl phosphate (DBP), tri-n-amyl phosphate (TAP) and bis (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphate (BEHP) as plasticizers in a PVC matrix membrane. Electrode parameters, pH effect and interferences were also studied. The indium electrode based on 15C5 using DOPP as a plasticizer gave the best response for low levels of In^{3+} ions. Utilizing a modified sol-gel process, a series of Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles will be produced. Each series synthesized will utilize six different toluene/methanol solvent ratios to yield six samples of nanoparticles. each with a different surface area. The surface area is expected to increase as the toluene/methanol ratio is increased. After preparation is completed, the nanoparticles will be characterized by BET method nitrogen adsorption measurement, IR spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. The Mg(OH)2 will then be utilized in a simple photocatalysis experiment to determine its possible use as catalyst for the degradation of toxic substances.

The crystal and molecular structure of the cis-bis[4-chloro-N-(pyrrolidine-1-carbothioyl)-benzamido] copper(II) complex was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound, C_{24}H_{24}N_4O_2 S_2Cl_2Cu, crystalizes in the triclinic space group P-1, with Z = 4 and unit cell parameters a = 8.3877(5) Å, b = 12.7904(8) Å, c = 24.160(2) Å, \alpha = 95.923(1) °, \beta = 96.001(1) °, and \gamma = 95.048(1) °. The copper atom is 4-fold coordinated by 2 S and 2 O atoms and shows a slightly distorted planar quadratic ligand arrangement.
