The measurement or hydrogen ion concentration is becoming more important in all the fields of chemistry since the states or many chemical systems can to some extent be defined by their hydrogen ion concentration. Six years later, Griess reported that diazonium salts of benzene yield benzene when boiled with alcohol (31). At first it was thought that only hydrocarbons were formed when diazonium salts of benzene were boiled with alcohol. An ester may be defined as the reaction product of an acid and an alcohol. Eaters are formed by both mineral and organic acids. The esters of the mineral acids differ widely in their physical and chemical properties because in general there is little similarity between the mineral acids. A different situation exists with the organic acid esters. These organic acids exist in groups, called homologous series, the difference between the individual acids being only the number of carbon atoms in the acid and the configuration of the carbon chain. Because of its somewhat unusual properties, thallium in particular aroused my interest and I decided that I should like to investigate the element further to my own satisfaction. In 1943 Franke reported that the protein of "allolied" or "toxic" wheat carried the toxicant, and Franke and Painter in 1935 reported that those "toxic" proteins contained selenium which was in organic combination in the protein. There has been much speculation regarding the possibility of selenium replacing sulfur in the amino acids cysteine and methionine. The toxicity of selenium in selenium analogs of these compounds is similar to that of selenium occurring naturally in proteins seleniferous cereals, which indicated that the selenium may be present in the proteins as the analogue of these sulfur amino acids.

The problem of this analysis was first encountered in organic characterization class where it was impossible to obtain a satisfactory test for nitrogen using the Lassaigne Method. The late discovery of methods of introduction of fluorine into organic compounds has retarded to some extent the commercial use of organic fluorides. The indirect methods used also prevented general preparation of fluorocompounds. However, the characteristic stability of many fluorine compounds has warranted both the preparation of numerous aromatic and aliphatic fluorides as well as a search for new methods of preparation. It 1s the purpose of this thesis to delineate the present methods of synthesis of aromatic fluorides and to show the influence of the substitution of fluorine on some of the physical properties of aromatic compounds.

Boundary tension is a measure of the free energy of a fluid interface. It is a term derived from the superficial analogy between the surface of a liquid and a stretched membrane. Just as the potential energy of a fluid mass in foot pound per pound is spoken of as a "head" in feet, so it is useful to speak of free energy of a fluid surface in ergs per square centimeter as a "tension" in dynes per centimeter.

The measurement of unsaturation in organic compounds are commonly expressed in terms of an iodine number, but as this value is not trustworthy in a number of cases, it has been suggested by earlier worker that an indication of unsaturation could be obtained by the quantitative hydrogenation of a compound and expressing the result in terms of a hydrogen number. Although such determinations have been previously made, usually at elevated temperatures and pressures, it is the purpose of this work to carry out the hydrogenation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The purpose of this thesis is to determine how gelatin behaves in the presence of various acids and alkalis. It is possible to titrate gelatins with acids and bases and thereby determine the relation of the pH of the solution to the amounts of acid or base combined with the gelatin. If the results are plotted, a titration curve is obtained, the value of which gives the acid and base combining properties of a certain gelatin.

Much has been written on the testing of organic compounds to inhibit the sulfuric acid corrosion in the pickling of steel. For the most part, however, this has been confined to work either on commercial inhibitors which are usually coal tar derivatives of unknown composition, or upon complex amines or sulfonates with little attention paid to comparing the types of polar linkages. The emphasis has been placed on the complexity of molecular structure rather than a thorough analysis of what structure really means in inhibiting action.

It was not, however, until 1846 that the results of Poiseuille's research were given to the public. For the comprehensive study he made of the problem, the concept of the laws controlling viscometry flow is attributed to him. Summary
The Friedel-Crafts reaction has been used in the preparation of thiophene ketones, some of which were hitherto unknown. Certain limitations of the reaction have been noted.
The mercuration of thiophene ketones has been systematically investigated for the first time. Many new halogen derivatives of benzothienone have been synthesized. These were employed in the elucidation of the structure of a complex mercurial· derived from this ketone.
A new modification of an old reaction has been developed whereby benzothienone can be mercurated quickly and almost quantitatively. Interesting derivatives of this little known ketone have been synthesized. Chief among these are the …
