New Palm Oil Products By Enzymatic Interesterification And Dry Fractionation., Saw Mei Huey
New Palm Oil Products By Enzymatic Interesterification And Dry Fractionation., Saw Mei Huey
Student Works (2010-2019)
Palm olein is one of the major palm oil products that domestically and industrially used as cooking or frying oil. Palm olein tends to crystallize at low temperature that limits its usage in temperate countries. In spite of various nutritional studies, palm olein is also not well considered as recommended choice due to its higher saturation content. Against these factors, there is a need to reduce its saturation content. In this study, the saturation content in palm olein was reduced through the combination of enzymatic interesterification and dry fractionation. Enzymatic interesterification allows interchanging of acyl groups between and within triacylglycerols …

Four Schiff base ligands, N,N’-1,2-benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(5-chlorosalicylideneimine) (H2L1), N,N’-1,2-benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(4-bromosalicylideneimine) (H2L2), N,N’-1,2- benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(4-hydroxysalicylideneimine) (H2L3), and N,N’-1,2-benzene-1,2-diyl-bis(3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylideneimine) (H2L4) were obtained in good yields from the condensation reaction of o-phenylenediamine with 5-chlorosalicylaldehyde, 5-bromosalicylaldehyde, 4-hydroxysalicylaldehyde and 3-bromo-5-chlorosalicylaldehyde respectively. These Schiff bases formed complexes with copper(II), iron(II) and nickel(II) ions in good yields. The structures of these complexes are mainly square planar, which is confirmed by the crystal structure of nickel(II) complex of bis-N,N’-3-chloro-5-bromosalicylideneamine-,2-diaminobenzene. Attempts to prepare the corresponding iron(III) complexes were unsuccessful. The ligands were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, 1H-Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy, while the complexes were characterized by …

Supramolecular Self-Assembly Strategies Involving Water Soluble Calixarenes., Irene Ling
Student Works (2010-2019)
Fundamental investigations of host-guest interactions on the supramolecular self-assembly involving water-soluble p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene, with a series of imidazolium-based cations and pyrrolidinium cation with variable alkyl chain lengths, which featured extensively in ionic liquids have been established. Combinatorial studies incorporating multiple components concerning p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene, imidazolium cations or pyrrolidinium cation, phosphonium cations and lanthanide ions have been developed, which yielded diverse solid state motifs with a common structural characteristic that the imidazolium or pyrrolidinium cation resides in the cavity of the calixarene. Shorter terminal alkyl chain of mono-imidazolium molecules, i.e. n-ethyl and n-butyl imidazoliums are confined in the „molecular capsule‟, being encapsulated by …

The goal of this study was to investigate three potential ways that the soluble organic nitrogen (N) fraction of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, termed effluent organic N (EON), could contribute to coastal eutrophication - direct biological removal, photochemical release of labile compounds, and salinity-mediated release of ammonium (NH4+). Effluents from two WWTPs were used in the experiments. For the bioassays, EON was added to water from four salinities (∼0 to 30) collected from the James River (VA) in August 2008, and then concentrations of N and phosphorus compounds were measured periodically over 48 h. Bioassay results, based …

Sequence And Structural Analysis Of The Chitinase Insertion Domain Reveals Two Conserved Motifs Involved In Chitin Binding, Hai Li, Lesley H. Greene
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Background: Chitinases are prevalent in life and are found in species including archaea, bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals. They break down chitin, which is the second most abundant carbohydrate in nature after cellulose. Hence, they are important for maintaining a balance between carbon and nitrogen trapped as insoluble chitin in biomass. Chitinases are classified into two families, 18 and 19 glycoside hydrolases. In addition to a catalytic domain, which is a triosephosphate isomerase barrel, many family 18 chitinases contain another module, i.e., chitinase insertion domain. While numerous studies focus on the biological role of the catalytic domain in chitinase activity, …

A New Photochemical Method For The Preparation Of Amino Acid-α-Phenylthioesters And Peptide-α-Phenylthioesters, Tyrone Hogenauer
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
We describe the development of a novel resin with a photoreactive N-acylnitroindoline linker that allows for the synthesis of amino acid- (in solution) or peptide-α-thioesters using standard Fmoc/t-Bu standard solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Recent advances have shown that the yields of this thioesterification reaction have dramatically increased due to a simple change in the order of addition of reagents. Upon illumination with UV-light, in the presence of N-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt), the amino acid- or peptide-α-OBt ester is generated by direct photo-release from the nitroindoline linker with minimal epimerization, followed by reaction with thiophenol in the dark to produce amino acid-α-phenylthioesters …

Conversion Of Racemic Ibuprofen To (S)-Ibuprofen, David Chavez-Flores
Conversion Of Racemic Ibuprofen To (S)-Ibuprofen, David Chavez-Flores
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Ibuprofen is a common Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) sold as a racemic or equal mixture of (R) and (S) mirror-image enantiomers. Without patent protection, ibuprofen is an orphan drug even though one enantiomer, (S)-ibuprofen, provides relief three times faster than its racemic mixture with fewer side effects. The goal of this research was to develop a facile, environmentally benign (no waste of ibuprofen or catalysts), and inexpensive process to convert a commercially available racemic mixture of ibuprofen to the therapeutically active (S)-ibuprofen.
After many attempts, the most successful conversion of racemic ibuprofen to (S)-ibuprofen was the in situ racemization and …

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a sensor protein, activated by aromatic chemical species for transcriptionally regulating xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes. AHR is also known to be involved in a variety of pathogenesis such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, cirrhosis, asthma, etc. The AHR signaling induced by xenobiotics has been intensively studied whereas its physiological role in the absence of xenobiotics is poorly understood. Despite a number of ligands of AHR have been reported thus far, further applications are still hampered by the lack of specificity and/or the partially agonistic activity. Thus, a pure AHR antagonist is needed for deciphering the AHR cryptic …

1,2-Bis(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indole is a novel example of an electron-deficient indole that undergoes nucleophilic attack at C-3. Though a variety of other organometallic nucleophiles fail to engender nucleophilic substitution, organocuprates produce 3-substituted 2-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indoles. These reactions contribute to the growing number of examples of nucleophilic addition to the indole core.

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Microporous solids are an important class of materials that have been studied extensively. Newer to this field are Microporous Organic Polymers (MOPs) which are networks constructed from smaller organic building blocks and exhibit large surface areas, small pore sizes and low densities. It is due to these characteristics that MOPs have attracted attention because of their potential use in applications such as catalysis, chemical separations and gas storage.
In this thesis is described the synthesis of two novel MOPs, the first of which being a network based on benzenediboronic acid and triptycene building blocks linked together by boronate esters. This …

Excellent thermal properties of carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and newly discovered graphene make them the filler of choice for the development of thermal management materials. Graphene has been viewed as “ unrolled single-walled carbon nanotube and as a wonder material with many superlatives to its name ” thus there is an excessive interest in developing new synthetic routes towards large scale production of high quality graphene nanosheets.
In this dissertation, we report different methods that could further exfoliate the commercially available expanded graphite to nanometer sized carbon structures, “carbon nanosheets ”, for their use in highly thermal conductive …

Theoretical Studies Of 2,3 -Sigmatropic Rearrangements Of Allylic Selenoxides And Selenimides, Craig A. Bayse, Sonia Antony
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Density-functional theory is used to model the endo and exo transition states for [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of allylic aryl-selenoxides and -selenimides. The endo transition state is generally preferred for selenoxides if there is no substitution at the 2 position of the allyl group. Based upon the relative energies of the endo and exo transition states, enantioselectivity of rearrangements is expected to be greatest for molecules with substitutions at the 1- or (E)-3- position of the allyl group. Ortho substitution of a nitro group on the ancillary selenoxide phenyl ring reduces the activation barriers, increases the difference between the endo and exo …

Novel Strategy For The Synthesis Of Allenes., Mark-Henry Mbahmi Kamga
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Allenes are very important chemical reagents in organic synthesis. Due to their high reactivity, they have been extensively used to carry out a variety of unique and effective chemical transformations including but not limited to ionic and free radical additions and transition metal catalyzed cyclizations. As the chemistry of this group of compounds is explored further and their applications expanded there is a need to develop alternative and cost effective methods for their synthesis. Our approach involves the synthesis of allenes from oxa-bicyclo-alkan-2-ones by methyllithium induced Eschenmoser fragmentation of the bicyclotosylhydrazone derivatives.

Solid Phase Amide Synthesis Using Staudinger-Vilarrasa Coupling And Microwave Irradiation, Ryan Patrick Schmidtz
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Amide bond formation is an already well documented area of organic chemistry, and is very useful in its application in medicine and pharmaceuticals. However, current methods have not been investigated with regards to optimization of reaction times, solvents, and energy sources. In addition, current methods also utilize toxic solvents to cleave the peptide from the solid phase resin. In our study, we combine the Staudinger and Vilarrasa coupling reactions with microwave irradiation to develop and optimize the synthesis of amide bonds through the use of a solid support. Instead of attaching the peptide to the solid support, our amide bond …

ABSTRACT
The δ-lactone moiety comprises structural subunits in a number of natural products. Highly substituted δ-lactones are important both in synthetic applications and also as naturally occurring compounds. We have reported a one-pot procedure for the synthesis of trans-4,5-disubstituted tetrahydropran-2-ones from 3-hydroxy-3,6-dihydropyran-2-one involving sequential cuprate mediated allylic substitution and 1,4-conjugate addition reactions. We have now examined the same protocol for synthesis of 4,5,6-trisubstituted δ-lactones.
The rich functionalities(i.e. the epoxide, olefin and ester functional groups) in ,δ-epoxy-α,β-enoates provide opportunities for SN2-epoxide opening, allylic substitution, and 1,4-conjugated addtion. The opening of the epoxide with AcCl, AcBr, and benzoyl chloride afforded the -acetoxy--halo-,-enoates …

In this study, we investigated the potential applications of carbohydrates in the development of new antibiotics. To tackle the problem of multidrug-resistant variants of M. tuberculosis (MDR-TB), we investigated the biosynthesis pathways of trehalose, which has contributed to significant drug resistance. Some new methods were developed for the synthesis of potential inhibitors (6-azido-trehalose and 6,6'-diazido-trehalose) that have been designed to imitate the intermediate molecule (trehalose 6-phosphate, TPP) of OtsA-OtsB pathway. At the same time, some new antibacterial agents based on trehalose have been synthesized. Members of the 1,2,3-triazole family have shown interesting biological properties. Steroid derivatives have been developed in …
