Reaction Between Polyol-Esters And Phosphate Esters In The Presence Of Metal Carbides, David W. Johnson, Carolyn Iacullo, John E. Hils
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The reaction of metal carbides with polyol esters found in aerospace lubricants and phosphate esters commonly used as additives was investigated. Carbides were of particular interest since modern materials under consideration at high temperature bearings have surfaces that are primarily metal carbides. Vanadium and chromium carbide were found to react with the ester and phosphate ester by a transesterification reaction, producing an alkyl phosphate which is less stable than the aromatic phosphate esters. In the process, the metal carbide is converted to the metal phosphate and metal polyphosphate, evidenced by the infrared and Raman spectra of the solid residue and …

Optimization Of The Optical And Electrochemical Properties Of Donor-Acceptor Copolymers Through Functional Group And Side Chain Modification, Mark J. Seger
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Donor-acceptor copolymers have received a great deal of attention for application as organic semiconductors, in particular as the active layers in low-cost consumer electronics. The functional groups grafted to the polymer backbones generally dictate the molecular orbital energies of the final materials as well as aid in self-assembly. Additionally, the side chains attached to these functional groups not only dictate the solubility of the final materials, but also their morphological characteristics. The bulk of the research presented in this dissertation focuses on the synthesis and structure-property relationships of polymers containing novel acceptor motifs. Chapter 2 focuses on the synthesis of …

Wave Profile For Current Bearing Antiforce Waves, H. Morris, W. Childs, P. Pinkston, M. Hemmati, J. Christensen
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
For fluid dynamical analysis of breakdown waves, we employ a one-dimensional, three-component (electrons, ions and neutral particles) fluid model to describe a steady-state, ionizing wave propagating counter to strong electric fields. The electron gas temperature and therefore the electron fluid pressure is assumed to be large enough to sustain the wave motion down the discharge tube. Such waves are referred to as antiforce waves. The complete set of equations describing such waves consists of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy coupled with Poisson’s equation. Inclusion of current behind the wave front alters the set of electron fluid …

Oligodeoxynucleotide Synthesis Using Protecting Groups And A Linker Cleavable Under Non-Nucleophilic Conditions, Xi Lin
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing latent electrophilic groups can be highly useful in antisense drug development and many other applications such as chemical biology and medicine, where covalent cross-linking of ODNs with mRNA, protein and ODN is required. However, such ODN analogues cannot be synthesized using traditional technologies due to the strongly nucleophilic conditions used in traditional deprotection/cleavage process.
To solve this long lasting and highly challenging problem in nucleic acid chemistry, I used the 1,3-dithian-2-yl-methoxycarbonyl (Dmoc) function to protect the exo-amino groups on the nucleobases dA, dC and dG, and to design the linker between the nascent ODN and solid support. …

Cyanamide was introduced into the rhodamine spirolactam framework to produce a colorless and non-fluorescent compound RBCN. It shows a reversible ring-opening/ring-closure process in response to the solution pH, which exhibits an “ON/OFF” switching in its fluorescence. Different from other rhodamine-type dyes, the ring-open form of RBCN is stable in protic solvents under neutral, near neutral and basic conditions, showing a pink color and very strong fluorescence. We also demonstrated the potential of RBCN in live cell imaging.

Role Of Extractable And Residual Organic Matter Fractions On Sorption Of Phenanthrene In Sediments, Yulong Zhang, Yong Ran, Jingdong Mao
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Two sediments were demineralized and sequentially fractionated into extracted fractions [free lipid (FL), bound lipid (BL) and lignin (LG)] and residual fractions [free lipid free (FLF), bound lipid free (BLF) and lignin free (LGF)]. The sorption isotherms of phenanthrene (Phen) were examined to evaluate the importance of various fractions on sorption. A lignin extraction procedure was for the first time applied to separate the lignin or degraded lignin fraction from sediment organic matter (SOM). The extracted LG was similar to model lignin in terms of elemental ratios and sorption behavior. FL and LG fractions were quite important, as their contents …

Interaction Mechanism Of Benzene And Phenanthrene In Condensed Organic Matter: Importance Of Adsorption (Nanopore-Filling), Ke Sun, Yong Ran, Yu Yang, Baoshan Xing, Jingdong Mao
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Although microporosity and surface area of natural organic matter (NOM) are crucial to mechanistic evaluation of the sorption process for nonpolar organic contaminants (NOCs), they have wrongly been estimated by the N2 adsorption technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR), and benzene, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen adsorption techniques were used to characterize structural and surface properties for different condensed NOM samples, which were related to the sorption behavior of phenanthrene (Phen). It was found that the revised Freundlich model by taking the chemical activity into account can well describe the isotherms for benzene and Phen. The benzene …

Much is anticipated from the development and deployment of nanomaterials in biological organisms, but concerns remain regarding their biocompatibility and target specificity. Here we report our study of the transport, biocompatibility and toxicity of purified and stable silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs, 13.1 ± 2.5 nm in diameter) upon the specific developmental stages of zebrafish embryos using single NP plasmonic spectroscopy. We find that single Ag NPs passively diffuse into five different developmental stages of embryos (cleavage, early-gastrula, early-segmentation, late-segmentation, and hatching stages), showing stage-independent diffusion modes and diffusion coefficients. Notably, the Ag NPs induce distinctive stage and dose-dependent phenotypes and …

Photochemical Synthesis Of Amino Acid And Peptide Oxo-Esters, Alfredo Ornelas
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Amino acid and peptide oxo-esters have played an important role in peptide chemistry for many years. Various amino acid esters are commonly used as protecting groups for peptide synthesis in solution. Moreover, activated phenyl ester derivatives have been used for chemical ligation of peptides. However, the synthesis of amino acid and peptide oxo-esters is commonly performed under acidic or basic conditions. Under acidic conditions, acid-sensitive protecting groups may be cleaved, and under basic conditions racemization of amino acid esters is a common problem. Here we present the photochemical synthesis of amino acid and peptide oxo-esters. Based on the photochemical properties …

N-Doped Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes: Functionalization, Characterization And Application In Li Ion Batteries, Aman Preet Kaur
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The focus of this dissertation is to utilize chemical functionalization as a probe to investigate the reactivity of N-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs). The surface of N-MWCNTs, being a set of potentially reactive graphene edges, provides a large number of reactive sites for chemical modification, so considerable changes in chemical and physical properties can be envisaged. We observed that both reduction (dissolving metal reduction/alkylation) and oxidation (H2SO4/HNO3 and H2SO4/KMnO4 mixtures) of N-MWCNTs lead to formation of interesting spiral channels and spiraled carbon nanoribbons. A variety of techniques, including TGA, SEM, …

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Electrochemical diazonium grafting offers versatile functionalization of chemically inert graphite under mild condition, which is particularly suitable for CNT composite modification. Tetrafluorinated carboxylphenyl diazonium grafting provides the most controllable functionalization chemistry allowing near monolayer levels of functionality on carbon nanotubes. The functional density was successfully quantified by anion selective dye-assay and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of thiol-Au self-assembled monolayers (SAM) as a calibration reference. This technique enables monolayer functionality at the tips of carbon nanotube membranes for biomimetic pumps and valves as well as thin conductive layers for CNT-based high area electrochemical support electrodes.
Double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) membranes were …

Water-Soluble Deep-Cavity Cavitands: Synthesis, Molecular Recognition, And Interactions With Phospholipid Membranes, Sarah E. Ioup
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Water-soluble deep-cavity cavitands provide a rare opportunity to study self-assembly driven by the hydrophobic effect. These molecular hosts dimerize in the presence of certain guest molecules to form water-soluble molecular capsules. These systems have given rise to numerous novel chemical phenomena and have potential use in drug delivery. The host octaacid (OA) has been particularly well-characterized, but studies are limited to basic pH because of limited host solubility.
Herein we report an improved synthesis of OA and the syntheses of three new water-soluble deep-cavity cavitands. The new hosts are soluble at neutral pH, increasing relevance for biological studies. The new …

Conserving the environment is an issue that is gaining popularity day by day. Phosphorus transfer from agricultural soils is an important environmental issue that is being closely observed as the transport of phosphorous to water bodies is adversely affecting water quality due to accelerated eutrophication. It is important to establish phosphorous models that accurately account for soil test phosphorous. Standard models like SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) and EPIC (Environmental Policy Integrated Climate) were designed for serving this purpose. They are now used as the basis for developing new models that can more accurately account for the phosphorus transport, …

Glycosylation involves the post-translational addition of carbohydrates to protein molecules and is an intricate and indispensable biochemical process. Study of this complicated network of interactions is hindered by the lack of a coding template analogous to the genetic code, and by the vast structural complexity inherent to carbohydrate polymers. We use lectins (non-enzymatic carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immunological origin) as microarray probes to identify carbohydrate features expressed on cellular surfaces. Specifically, we utilized lectin microarray technology to investigate the differences in carbohydrates expressed by the cell lines of the Nation Cancer Institute’s NCI-60 panel. Our investigation identified tissue-specific expression differences in …

Investigations Of Inter- And Intramolecular C-O Bond Forming Reactions Of Peroxide Electrophiles, Benjamin W. Puffer
Investigations Of Inter- And Intramolecular C-O Bond Forming Reactions Of Peroxide Electrophiles, Benjamin W. Puffer
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A common reaction to yield ethers relies on an alkoxide nucleophile and a carbon electrophile (Williamson ether formation). Ethers can also be formed by reactions with carbon nucleophiles and oxygen electrophiles by way of the peroxide functional group. We screened a number of carbon nucleophiles suitable for attack on dialkyl peroxides to form new C-O bonds. Also a novel approach using a peroxyketal electrophile is shown to increase the efficiency of this intermolecular reaction. This method of C-O bond formation can also be implemented intramolecularly, not seen before in the literature, to yield cyclic ethers. This approach requires the generation …

Anti-Germinants As A New Strategy To Prevent Clostridium Difficile Infections, Amber Janece Howerton
Anti-Germinants As A New Strategy To Prevent Clostridium Difficile Infections, Amber Janece Howerton
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Clostridium difficileinfections (CDI) have emerged as a leading cause of hospital-associated complications. CDI is the major cause of antibiotic-related cases of diarrhea and nearly all cases of pseudomembranous colitis. The infective form of C. difficileis the spore, a dormant and hardy structure that forms under stress. Germination of C. difficile spores into toxin producing bacteria in the GI tract of susceptible patients is the first step in CDI establishment. Patient susceptibility occurs with a disruption of the natural gut microbiota by broad-spectrum antibiotics. Antibiotic treatments usually resolve CDI but refractory cases are on the rise. Of great concern is the …
