In this site we would expect a very large response (40 to 50% ) to phosphorus.

History:

The site was chosen because of the patchy and poor pasture production. The poor areas tend to have more suckling clover than the good areas. The pasture was legume dominant.

Treatments were applied on April 16, 1989.

Based on a 1.5 t/ha potential yield, the strategic treatment was planned to be 120 kg urea/ha 4WAS. However, the crop was poorly established and so NH4NO3 was used in the hope of getting better tillering than would be possible with the slower release urea source. Gambling on equal dollars to urea for 2/3 N, but believe that twice as effective.

DAP was used to place nitrogen with the seed in case there was no rain of significance after seeding. This nitrogen (only 5 kg/ha) was probably lost with the rains of 20-28/7/89 (50 mm). Urea …

History:

1987 Aroona wheat with 70 kg DAP and 3 kg CuSO4 at seeding followed by 60 urea at 3WAS and another 40 urea at 6WAS. Yield was about 1.7 to 1.8 t/ha;
1988 Gungurru lupins with 120 kg super and manganese/ha yielded 1.9 t/ha. 350-400 ml Roundup/ha and one cultivation prior to seeding.

Sulfide In Surface Waters Of The Western Atlantic Ocean, Gregory A. Cutter, Christian F. Krahforst

Using newly developed techniques, some preliminary data on hydrogen sulfide in surface waters of the western Atlantic have been obtained. Concentrations of total sulfide range from <0.1 to 1.1 nmol/L, and vary on a diel basis. At these concentrations, sulfide may affect the cycling of several trace metals via the formation of stable complexes. Production of sulfide in oxygenated seawater may occur through the hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide or by sulfate reduction within macroscopic particles in the water column. Removal mechanisms can include oxidation, complexation with particulate trace metals, and metal sulfide precipitation. However, the temporal and spatial distributions suggest a complex set of processes governing the behavior of sulfide in the surface ocean.

This trial is difficult to analyze statistically because of the treatment changes induced by sheep breaking in to some of the plots. Further, lupin grain yields were not very high and so differences between harvested and unharvested treatments are not large. Also the grazing intensity was not very severe (except on the unintentionally grazed plots) and so the effect of grazing is also relatively small.

It has been suggested that high levels of phosphorus application to lupins can reduce the impact of leaf and root diseases. Two old rotation trials provided a range of disease burdens, across which phosphate rates on lupins were applied. Disease scores, vegetative yields, phosphorus concentration and seed yields were measured.

Trial has shown that the effectiveness of the different types of rock phosphate were about the fifth to one tenth as effective as the fresh (triple) superphosphate applied in 1984. The effectiveness of the superphosphate, decreased by 60 between year 1 and 2, and by a further 10-15% by 1987. Much of the Miocene Monterey Formation of California is rich in biogenic sediment, especially organic matter and silica. Because of the geologic structure, the Monterey in the subsurface near Lost Hills in the San Joaquin Basin forms a natural laboratory for the study of the diagenetic responses of these materials. Rocks of similar age and lithology are buried to depths ranging between 500 and 3500 m, and are thus exposed to a temperature range of 45–130°C. This study of ATR-IR involved taking spectra of various silicate minerals in powder samples, finding similarities and differences in nature, and locating various bands and intensities of absorption bands for identification and classification purposes. Density currents are commonly formed in reservoirs because of temperature or salinity induced density differences between inflowing and receiving waters. Anderson and Pritchard (1951) were among the first to demonstrate this in their investigations of density currents in Lake Mead. They found that the Colorado River formed an underflow in Lake Mead during the winter, an overflow in the spring and an interflow in the summer and fall. Wunderlich and Elder (1973) have since described the hydromechanics of these types of flow patterns, and density currents have been reported for several other large reservoirs (Carmack et al. 1979, Johnson and …
