Physical Properties Of The Binary Star 12 Persei, David J. Barlow, Colin D. Scarfe, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained new radial velocities of the double-lined spectroscopic binary star 12 Persei, whose period is 331 days, and which has been resolved in recent years by speckle interferometry. We derive a solution for the orbital elements from the speckle and radial velocity data simultaneously, and find from that solution masses of 1.306 ± 0.035 and 1.172 ± 0.030 M☉ for the components, and an orbital parallax of 0farcs04224 ± 0farcs00056. We also determine spectroscopically the difference in magnitude between the components and, hence, their absolute magnitudes. We estimate their spectral types and individual colors by fitting standard-star colors …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New spectroscopic observations of the double-lined chromospherically active binary 54 Camelopardalis (=AE Lyncis) have been obtained, resulting in improved orbital elements and the determination of the fundamental properties of the system. 54 Cam has a period of 11.06794 days, an eccentricity of 0.125, and a mass ratio of 0.9945. The spectral types are F8 IV-V and G5 IV, positioning the components on opposite sides of the Hertzsprung gap. From a comparison with theoretical evolutionary tracks, the masses are estimated to be 1.60 and 1.59 M_⊙ for the G and F stars, respectively, while the radii are 3.7 and 3.2 R_⊙. …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xvi. The Double-Lined Binary 42 Capricorni, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New spectroscopic observations of the chromospherically active binary, 42 Capricorni, have resulted in the detection of lines of the secondary, improved orbital elements, and the determination of fundamental properties of the components. 42 Cap has an orbital period of 13.174004 d, an eccentricity of 0.176, and a mass ratio A/B of 1.375. No evidence for a variation of the center-of-mass velocity, suggested by earlier investigators, has been found. Spectral types of the primary and secondary are G1 IV and G2 V, respectively. The V mag difference of 1.94 and HIPPARCOS parallax result in MV = 2.79 mag for A and …

We present a spot modeling analysis of the active late-type giant HK Lac using 30 years of photometry, including 600 new data points from the last six years. We have analyzed folded light curves and, when we had long continuous data sets, applied a new computer code for time-series modeling. The validity of the modeling results was tested as a function of the photometric noise. We have determined the unspotted brightness of HK Lac in the BV(RI)_C_ bandpasses and obtained a spot temperature of {DELTA}T=1200+/-100K. Polar active regions were recovered throughout the modeling because no other scenario was able to …

Rotational Velocities Of Late-Type Stars, Francis C. Fekel May 1997

Rotational Velocities Of Late-Type Stars, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

A calibration based on the results of Gray has been used to determine projected rotational velocities for 133 bright stars with spectral types of F, G, or K, most of which appear in {The Bright Star Catalogue}. The vast majority have {v} sin {i} ≤q 10 km s-1 and, thus, are slow rotators. With the new calibration, projected rotational velocities have been determined for a sample of 111 late-type stars, most of which are chromospherically active. Some of the stars have had their rotational velocities measured for the first time.

We present our analysis of 240 hr of white-light, high-speed photometry of the dwarf nova-like helium variable PG 1346+082 (CR Boo). We identify two frequencies in the low-state power spectrum, at 679.670 ± 0.004 μHz and 669.887 ± 0.008 μHz. The 679.670 μHz variation is coherent over at least a 2 week time span, the first demonstration of a phase-coherent photometric variation in any dwarf nova-like interacting binary white dwarf system. The high-state power spectrum contains a complex fundamental with a frequency similar, but not identical, to the low-state spectrum, and a series of harmonics not detected in low state. …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New spectroscopic observations have resulted in significant revisions to several of the orginally published properties of the X-ray bright, chromospherically active star 1E 1751+7046: the spectral classification has been revised from K5 IV to K0 III, v sin i from 30-40 km s-1 to 23 km s-1, and the reported nondetection of the Li I 6707 Å line to a significant log epsilon(Li) = 1.8. Chromospheric and transition region surface fluxes from IUE observations and the coronal surface flux from earlier Einstein data are close to saturation levels, and comparable only to very active binaries, pre-main-sequence stars, and FK Comae …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xv. Hd 8357=Ar Piscium, An Extremely Active Rs Cvn System, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

One of the first x-ray sources optically identified as a chromospherically active star, HD 8357=AR Piscium, is a double-lined binary consisting of a K1 IV primary and G7 V secondary. Careful examination of the Ca II H and K lines indicates that only the primary is active, having strong Ca II H and K, Hɛ, and Hα emission. The system has an orbital period of 14.3023 days and an eccentricity of 0.185. Such an eccentricity is not particularly unusual for chromospherically active stars with periods between 10 and 20 days. An assumed mass of 0.92Msun for the secondary results in …

The results of coordinated observations of the dMe star YZ CMi at optical, UV and radio wavelengths during 3-7 February 1983 are presented. YZ CMi showed repeated optical flaring with the largest flare having a magnitude of 3.8 in the U-band. This flare coincided with an IUE exposure which permits a comparison of the emission measure curves of YZ CMi in its flaring and quiescent state. During the flare a downward shift of the transition zone is observed while the radiative losses in the range 10^4^-10^7^K strongly increase. The optical flare is accompanied with a radio flare at 6cm, while …

Random Spots On Chromospherically Active Stars, Joel A. Eaton, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have investigated the effect of large numbers of moderately sized spots placed randomly on a differentially rotating star as the explanation of the rotational light curves of magnetically active cool stars. This hypothesis produces light variation very similar to observed light curves of RS CVn binaries, provided there are of order 10-40 spots at any time and provided individual spots have a finite lifetime.

Hde 233517: Lithium And Excess Infrared Emission In Giant Stars, Francis C. Fekel, Richard A. Webb, Russel J. White, Benjamin Zuckerman

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Recent studies have identified a small class of moderately rapidly rotating, chromospherically active, single giants, some of which are lithium rich. We present evidence suggesting the peculiar K-type star HDE 233517 is one such object. Previously, HDE 233517 has been suggested to be a young star, consistent with its large far-infrared excess and our log ε(Li) ~ 3.3. However, our high-resolution spectroscopic observations show it is likely a single, post-main-sequence K2 giant with v sin i = 15 km s-1 and modest Ca II H and K emission. The giant status of HDE 233517 is determined directly from luminosity-sensitive line …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xiv. A Rediscussion Of The Properties And Evolutionary State Of Hd 181943, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The chromospherically active single star HD 181943 was previously proposed as either a pre-main-sequence star seen pole-on or a post-main-sequence subgiant that evolved from an Ap star similar to 53 Cam. It also was found to be a variable star with a 385 day period. We have used new spectroscopic and photometric observations to reevaluate the properties and evolutionary state of this unusual system. We conclude that HD 181943 is a single K1 V star that has recently arrived on the ZAMS. Its emission line fluxes are nearly identical to those of HD 82558= LQ Hya, while its log lithium …

We have analyzed 15-19 yr of photoelectric photometry, obtained manually and with automated telescopes, of the chromospherically active binaries lambda And, sigma Gem, II Peg, and V711 Tau. These observations let us identify individual dark starspots on the stellar surfaces from periodic dimming of the starlight, follow the evolution of these spots, and search for long-term cyclic changes in the properties of these starspots that might reveal magnetic cycles analogous to the Sun's 11 yr sunspot cycle. We developed a computer code to fit a simple two-spot model to our observed light curves that allows us to extract the most …

It has been a puzzle why this chromospherically active, strong-dynamo K2 IV-III star is not known to have the large starspots characteristic of other such stars. Published individual radial velocities, which had never been analyzed, are used to derive an orbital solution. Combined with the one older existing orbital solution, this yields an improved orbital ephemeris: time of conjunction (K star behind) = JD 2445255.47 +/- 0.11 days and period = 17.75346 +/- 0.00016 days. All available photoelectric photometry, from 1970.9 to 1992.5, is collected A cos 2 theta fit of the ellipticity effect yields JD 2445255.60 +/- 0.06 days …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

HD 30957 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 44.395 days and a modest eccentricity of 0.09. The spectral types of the components are K2-3 V and K5 V. The measured v sin i for both components is less than or equal to 3 km/s and the orbital inclination is estimated to be 69 deg. The system is relatively nearby with a parallax of 0.025 sec or a distance of 40 pc. Space motions of the system indicate that it does not belong to any of the known moving groups. Absolute surface fluxes of the Ca II H …

ADS 11060 C is a double lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 25.7631 days and an eccentricity of 0.565. Spectral types of the two stars are estimated as K7 V and MO V with a magnitude difference of about 0.55 mag in V. The stars appear to be somewhat metal rich with respect to the Sun. Despite the relatively large masses of 0.53 and 0.51 solar mass, our photometric observations find no evidence for eclipses and we estimate an inclination of 77 deg plus or minus 11 deg. ADS 11060 C is, however, photometrically variable with a period of …

Optical Variability In The Unusual K5 V Infrared-Excess Star Hd 98800, Gregory W. Henry, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The dusty infrared-excess star HD 98800 (K5 V) was observed for several weeks in the spring of 1993 by the Vanderbilt/Tennessee State 0.4 m automatic photoelectric telescope. It was found to be a variable star with an amplitude of 0.07 mag in V and a period of 14.7 days. We show, by comparison with other chromospherically active variable stars and constant stars with good observational histories, that the Rossby number for HD 98800, determined to be 0.30, places it well within the regime of stars whose convective envelopes and rotation rates combine to drive a magnetic dynamo strong enough to …

HR 6469 consists of an evolved G star and a close pair of stars, believed to be on the main sequence, the brighter of which is an early F star. Shallow eclipses have been detected in the close pair and the components of the wide system have been resolved over most of the orbit by speckle interferometry (McAlister & Hartkopf, Second Catalog of Interferometric Observations of Binary Stars, Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy, Contribution No. 2 (CHARA), 1988). This paper presents radial velocities, obtained at the David Dunlap, McDonald, Kitt Peak and Dominion Astrophysical Observatories, for the G star …

We present a time-dependent spot modeling analysis of 15 consecutive years of V-band photometry of the long-period (Porb = 28.6 days) RS CVn binary HR 7275. This baseline in time is one of the longest, uninterrupted intervals a spotted star has been observed. The spot modeling analysis yields a total of 20 different spots throughout the time span of our observations. The distribution of the observed spot migration rates is consistent with solar-type differential rotation and suggests a lower limit of the differential-rotation coefficient of 0.022 +/-0.004. The observed, maximum lifetime of a single spot (or spot group) is 4.5 …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xi. Giants With Compact Hot Companions And The Barium Star Scenario, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Michael R. Busby, Joseph J. Eitter

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have determined spectroscopic orbits for three chromsopherically active giants that have hot compact companions. They are HD 160538 (KO III + wd, P = 904 days), HD 165141 (G8 III + wd, P approximately 5200 days), and HD 185510 (KO III + sdB, P = 20.6619 days). By fitting an IUE spectrum with theoretical models, we find the white dwarf companion of HD 165141 has a temperature of about 35,000 K. Spectral types and rotational velocities have been determined for the three giants and distances have been estimated. These three systems and 39 Ceti are compared with the barium …

Extremely Active Long-Period Rs Cvn Binary Hd 12545, Bernard W. Bopp, Francis C. Fekel, Jason P. Aufdenberg, Robert C. Dempsey, Virgiljus Dadonas

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The active-chromosphere giant HD 12545 is noteworthy for its remarkable 1990 photmetric amplitude of 0.6 mag in V, which implies that nearly half the visible hemisphere of the star was covered by cool spots. We report the results of a spectroscopic study of HD 12545, showing it to be an active-chromosphere binary with an orbital period of 23.97 days. We establish the spectral type as KO III, and measure v sin i = 17 +/- 2 km/s. The various indicators of activity in the optical and ultraviolet suggest that HD 12545 is one of the most active RS CVn systems …

Optical Spectroscopy Of The Dusty K5 V Star Hd 98800, Francis C. Fekel, Bernard W. Bopp

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

High-resolution CCD spectra of the red region of the dusty K5 V star HD 98800, which may contain a protoplanetary disk, have been obtained at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The spectra verify the dwarf spectral type and show rotationally broadened photospheric lines, Hα emission, and a very strong Li Ι λ6707 absorption line, all of which confirm the star as a very young object. The overall spectrum of HD 98800 closely resembles that of the young, chromospherically active, single BY Dra star HD 82558 (=LQ Hya). The measured Li Ι equivalent width of 0.39 Å implies an abundance log N …

Spot On Rs Cvn From Spectroscopy And Photometry, Joel A. Eaton, Gregory W. Henry, Coretta Bell, Albert Okorogu

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have used contemporaneous spectra and V light curves to form spot models for RS CVn in 1991 and 1992. More than two spots are needed to fit all the properties of the observations. In fact, moderately small spots (22 x 28 deg in latitude and longitude) having only a slight effect on the rotational light curve were eclipsed in both years, and we find that a collection of 6-8 such moderate spots is required to fit the line profiles in each year. These groups of spots also account naturally for a difference in level of light between the two …

The Spectroscopic Orbit Of Gamma Geminorum And A Search For Its Secondary, Francis C. Fekel, Jocelyn Tomkin

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New spectroscopic observations of Gamma Geminorum, a bright, 'normal' A1 IV star have resulted in an improved spectroscopic orbit. The orbital period is 12.632 +/- 0.002 yr, the eccentricity is 0.893 +/-0.002, and the orbital parallax is 0.0291 +/-0.0024 arcsec, or a distance of 34 pc. We determine a v sin i of 8 +/-1 km/s for the A star, which confirms that it is a slow rotator. Near-infrared spectroscopic observations at 8806 A, obtained through the brief nodal passage, have resulted in the probable detection of the secondary. The masses are 2.8 and 1.07 solar mass and the Delta …

The system HD 212280 is a chromospherically active double lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 45.284 days and an eccentricity of 0.50. The spectrum is composite with spectral types of G8 IV and F5-8 V for the components. An estimated inclination of 78 +/- 8 deg results in masses of 1.7 and 1.4 solar mass for the G subgiant and mid-F star, respectively. The distance to the system is estimated to be 112 pc. Photometric observations obtained between 1987 November and 1992 June reveal that HD 212280 is a newly identified variable star with a V amplitude of …

Observations Of The Ca Ii Infrared Triplet In Chromospherically Active Single And Binary Stars, Robert C. Dempsey, Bernard W. Bopp, Gregory W. Henry, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Spectroscopic observations of the Ca II infrared triplet (8498, 8542, 8662 A) have been obtained for 45 stars which are known or suspected to be chromospherically active. The sample includes both single and binary stars of spectral types from F2 to M5 spanning luminosity classes III, IV, and V. Several different types of activity diagnostics were measured, and their relative merits are discussed. Dependence of chromospheric emission upon rotation period, luminosity, temperature, and duplicity are analyzed. Synchronous binaries show a slight trend of increased emission with decreasing period while the asynchronous binaries show abnormally high activity levels for their rotation …

The Triple Symbiotic System Ch Cygni, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Francis C. Fekel, Diana S. Johnson, Werner W.G. Scharlach

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Analysis of high-resolution IR spectra of CH Cygni shows that the star is a triple system with a short period orbit of just over 2 yrs. The period ratio of seven for CH Cyg is the smallest known for a triple system. The symbiotic pair is the short-period system. An eccentric and a circular orbit solution are determined for the short-period pair, and the circular orbit solution is found to be more appropriate. The observed eccentricity appears to be due to phase-dependent line asymmetries resulting from the irradiation of the M giant by the white dwarf. The system does not …

Lithium And Rapid Rotation In Chromospherically Active Single Giants, Francis C. Fekel, Suchitra C. Balachandran

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The rotational velocities presently obtained via spectroscopic observations of a group of moderately rapidly rotating, chomospherically active single giants indicate that Gray's (1989) rotostat hypothesis requires modification. Their rapid rotation appears to be due to high Li abundances, and results in increased chromospheric activity. A scenario is projected in which the surface convection zone reaches the rapidly rotating core just as a star begins its first ascent of the giant branch, and dredges both high angular momentum material and freshly synthesized Li to the surface.

Two New Spotted Variables-Hd 191262 And Hd 191011, Douglas S. Hall, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New 1988-1990 photometry in V and B with a 16 inch automatic telescope shows that both HD 191262, a previously known chromospherically active binary, and its comparison star HD 191011 are variable, with starspots judged to be the mechanism in both. In HD 191262 and 191011, respectively, spot rotation periods of 5d.4 < P < 5d.7 and 1 7d.4 < P < 23d.0 were found and differential rotation coefficients of k=0.054 and 0.28 were estimated. HD 191011, shown to be a KS giant about 475 parsecs away, had eight different spots present during the 2.5 years of observation.

A powerful, new probe of chromospheric activity, cross-correlation, has been developed and applied to a variety of stars. In this particular application, an entire CCD spectrum of an active star is correlated with the spectrum of a narrow-line, inactive star of similar spectral type and luminosity class. Using a number of strong lines in this manner enables the detection of absorption profile asymmetries at moderate resolution (lambda/Delta lambda about 40,000) and S/N 150:1. This technique has been applied to 14 systems mostly RS CVn's, with 10 not greater than nu sin i not greater than 50 km/s and P not …
