Riemann Tensor Of The Ambient Universe, The Dilaton, And Newton’S Constant, Rossen Ivanov, Emil Prodanov Jan 2004

Riemann Tensor Of The Ambient Universe, The Dilaton, And Newton’S Constant, Rossen Ivanov, Emil Prodanov

Articles

We investigate a four-dimensional world, embedded into a five-dimensional spacetime, and find the five-dimensional Riemann tensor via generalisation of the Gauss (--Codacci) equations. We then derive the generalised equations of the four-dimensional world and also show that the square of the dilaton field is equal to the Newton's constant. We find plausable constant and non-constant solutions for the dilaton. Comment: 5 pages, revtex

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies: Spectroscopic Data, G. Wegner, M. Bernardi, C. N. A. Willmer, L. N. Da Costa Nov 2003

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies: Spectroscopic Data, G. Wegner, M. Bernardi, C. N. A. Willmer, L. N. Da Costa

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present central velocity dispersions and Mg2 line indices for an all-sky sample of ~1178 elliptical and S0 galaxies, of which 984 had no previous measures. This sample contains the largest set of homogeneous spectroscopic data for a uniform sample of elliptical galaxies in the nearby universe. These galaxies were observed as part of the ENEAR project, designed to study the peculiar motions and internal properties of the local early-type galaxies. Using 523 repeated observations of 317 galaxies obtained during different runs, the data are brought to a common zero point. These multiple observations, taken during the many runs …

Gauge-Invariant Initial Conditions And Early Time Perturbations In Quintessence Universes, Michael Doran, Christian M. Müller, Gregor Schäfer, Christof Wetterich Sep 2003

Gauge-Invariant Initial Conditions And Early Time Perturbations In Quintessence Universes, Michael Doran, Christian M. Müller, Gregor Schäfer, Christof Wetterich

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a systematic treatment of the initial conditions and evolution of cosmological perturbations in a universe containing photons, baryons, neutrinos, cold dark matter, and a scalar quintessence field. By formulating the evolution in terms of a differential equation involving a matrix acting on a vector comprised of the perturbation variables, we can use the familiar language of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. As the largest eigenvalue of the evolution matrix is fourfold degenerate, it follows that there are four dominant modes with a nondiverging gravitational potential at early times, corresponding to adiabatic, cold dark matter isocurvature, baryon isocurvature and neutrino isocurvature …

Complex Multiplication Symmetry Of Black Hole Attractors, Monika Lynker, Vipul Periwal, Rolf Schimmrigk Sep 2003

Complex Multiplication Symmetry Of Black Hole Attractors, Monika Lynker, Vipul Periwal, Rolf Schimmrigk

Faculty Articles

We show how Moore’s observation, in the context of toroidal compactifications in type IIB string theory, concerning the complex multiplication structure of black hole attractor varieties, can be generalized to Calabi-Yau compactifications with finite fundamental groups. This generalization leads to an alternative general framework in terms of motives associated to a Calabi-Yau variety in which it is possible to address the arithmetic nature of the attractor varieties in a universal way via Deligne’s period conjecture.

Phantom Energy: Dark Energy With W < − 1 Causes A Cosmic Doomsday, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski, Nevin N. Weinberg Aug 2003

Phantom Energy: Dark Energy With W < − 1 Causes A Cosmic Doomsday, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski, Nevin N. Weinberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

We explore the consequences that follow if the dark energy is phantom energy, in which the sum of the pressure and energy density is negative. The positive phantom-energy density becomes infinite in finite time, overcoming all other forms of matter, such that the gravitational repulsion rapidly brings our brief epoch of cosmic structure to a close. The phantom energy rips apart the Milky Way, solar system, Earth, and ultimately the molecules, atoms, nuclei, and nucleons of which we are composed, before the death of the Universe in a “big rip.”

Black Hole Attractor Varieties And Complex Multiplication, Monika Lynker, Vipul Periwal, Rolf Schimmrigk Jun 2003

Black Hole Attractor Varieties And Complex Multiplication, Monika Lynker, Vipul Periwal, Rolf Schimmrigk

Faculty Articles

Black holes in string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau varieties a priori might be expected to have moduli dependent features. For example the entropy of the black hole might be expected to depend on the complex structure of the manifold. This would be inconsistent with known properties of black holes. Supersymmetric black holes appear to evade this inconsistency by having moduli fields that flow to fixed points in the moduli space that depend only on the charges of the black hole. Moore observed in the case of compactifications with elliptic curve factors that these fixed points are arithmetic, corresponding to curves …

Effects Of The Sound Speed Of Quintessence On The Microwave Background And Large Scale Structure, Simon Dedeo, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt May 2003

Effects Of The Sound Speed Of Quintessence On The Microwave Background And Large Scale Structure, Simon Dedeo, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt

Dartmouth Scholarship

We consider how quintessence models in which the sound speed differs from the speed of light and varies with time affect the cosmic microwave background and the fluctuation power spectrum. Significant modifications occur on length scales related to the Hubble radius during epochs in which the sound speed is near zero and the quintessence contributes a non-negligible fraction of the total energy density. For the microwave background, we find that the usual enhancement of the lowest multipole moments by the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect can be modified, resulting in suppression or bumps instead. Also, the sound speed can produce oscillations and …

Observational Constraints On General Relativistic Energy Conditions, Cosmic Matter Density And Dark Energy From X-Ray Clusters Of Galaxies And Type-La Supernovae, P. Schuecker, R. R. Caldwell, H. Böhringer, C. A. Collins Feb 2003

Observational Constraints On General Relativistic Energy Conditions, Cosmic Matter Density And Dark Energy From X-Ray Clusters Of Galaxies And Type-La Supernovae, P. Schuecker, R. R. Caldwell, H. Böhringer, C. A. Collins

Dartmouth Scholarship

New observational constraints on the cosmic matter density Ωm and an effectively redshift-independent equation

of state parameter wx of the dark energy are obtained while simultaneously testing the strong and null energy conditions of

general relativity on macroscopic scales. The combination of REFLEX X-ray cluster and type-Ia supernova data shows that

for a flat Universe the strong energy condition might presently be violated whereas the null energy condition seems to be

fulfilled. This provides another observational argument for the present accelerated cosmic expansion and the absence of exotic

physical phenomena related to a broken null energy condition. The marginalization of …

E/B Decomposition Of Finite Pixelized Cmb Maps, Emory F. Bunn, Matias Zaldarriaga, Max Tegmark, Angelica De Oliveira-Costa Jan 2003

E/B Decomposition Of Finite Pixelized Cmb Maps, Emory F. Bunn, Matias Zaldarriaga, Max Tegmark, Angelica De Oliveira-Costa

Physics Faculty Publications

Separation of the E and B components of a microwave background polarization map or a weak lensing map is an essential step in extracting science from it, but when the map covers only part of the sky and/or is pixelized, this decomposition cannot be done perfectly. We present a method for decomposing an arbitrary sky map into a sum of three orthogonal components that we term ‘‘pure E,’’ ‘‘pure B,’’ and ‘‘ambiguous.’’ The fluctuations in the pure E and B maps are due only to the E and B power spectra, respectively, whereas the source of those in …

Lisa, Binary Stars, And The Mass Of The Graviton, Curt Cutler, William A. Hiscock, Shane L. Larson

All Physics Faculty Publications

We extend and improve earlier estimates of the ability of the proposed LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) gravitational wave detector to place upper bounds on the graviton mass mg by comparing the arrival times of gravitational and electromagnetic signals from binary star systems. We show that the best possible limit on mg obtainable this way is ∼50 times better than the current limit set by solar system measurements. Among currently known, well-understood binaries, 4U1820-30 is the best for this purpose; LISA observations of 4U1820-30 should yield a limit ≈3-4 times better than the present solar system bound. AM …

Lisa Data Analysis: Source Identification And Subtraction, Neil J. Cornish, Shane L. Larson Jan 2003

Lisa Data Analysis: Source Identification And Subtraction, Neil J. Cornish, Shane L. Larson

All Physics Faculty Publications

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna will operate as an AM-FM receiver for gravitational waves. For binary systems, the source location, orientation and orbital phase are encoded in the amplitude and frequency modulation. The same modulations spread a monochromatic signal over a range of frequencies, making it difficult to identify individual sources. We present a method for detecting and subtracting individual binary signals from a data stream with many overlapping signals.

Spintessence! New Models For Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Latham A. Boyle, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski Oct 2002

Spintessence! New Models For Dark Matter And Dark Energy, Latham A. Boyle, Robert R. Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate a class of models for dark matter and/or negative-pressure, dynamical dark energy consisting of “spintessence”, a complex scalar field φ spinning in a U(1)-symmetric potential V(φ)=V(|φ|). As the Universe expands, the field spirals slowly toward the origin. The internal angular momentum plays an important role in the cosmic evolution and fluctuation dynamics. We outline the constraints on a cosmic spintessence field, describing the properties of the potential necessary to sustain a viable dark energy model, making connections with quintessence and self-interacting and fuzzy cold dark matter. Possible implications for the …

Sensitivity Of The Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy To Initial Conditions In Quintessence Cosmology, Rahul Dave, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt Jul 2002

Sensitivity Of The Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy To Initial Conditions In Quintessence Cosmology, Rahul Dave, R. R. Caldwell, Paul J. Steinhardt

Dartmouth Scholarship

We analyze the evolution of energy density fluctuations in cosmological scenarios with a mixture of cold dark matter and quintessence, in which the quintessence field is modeled by a constant equation of state. We obtain analytic expressions for the time evolution of the quintessence perturbations in models with light fields. The fluctuations behave analogously to a driven harmonic oscillator, where the driving term arises from the inhomogeneities in the surrounding cosmological fluid. We demonstrate that the homogeneous solution, determined by the initial conditions, is completely subdominant to the inhomogeneous solution for physically realistic scenarios. Thus we show that the cosmic …

Modeling The Galactic Center Nonthermal Filaments As Magnetized Wakes, Russell B. Dahlburg, Giorgio Einaudi, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore Mar 2002

Modeling The Galactic Center Nonthermal Filaments As Magnetized Wakes, Russell B. Dahlburg, Giorgio Einaudi, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore

Faculty Articles

We simulate the Galactic center nonthermal laments as magnetized wakes formed dynamically from amplification of a weak ( tens of l G) global magnetic field through the interaction of molecular clouds with a Galactic center wind. One of the key issues in this cometary model is the stability of the lament against dynamical disruption. Here we show two-dimensional MHD simulations for interstellar conditions that are appropriate for the Galactic center. The structures eventually disrupt through a shear-driven nonlinear instability but maintain coherence for lengths up to 100 times their width as observed. The final instability, which destroys the lament through …

Nested Bars In Disk Galaxies : No Offset Dust Lanes In Secondary Nuclear Bars, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller Feb 2002

Nested Bars In Disk Galaxies : No Offset Dust Lanes In Secondary Nuclear Bars, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Under certain conditions, subkiloparsec nuclear bars form inside large-scale stellar bars of disk galaxies. These secondary bars spend a fraction of their lifetime in a dynamically decoupled state, tumbling in the gravitational field of the outer bars. We analyze the flow pattern in such nested-bar systems under the conditions of negligible self-gravity and find that secondary bars differ fundamentally from their large-scale counterparts in gas flow pattern and other dynamical properties. In particular, the gas flow across the bar-bar interface in these systems can be more chaotic or more regular in nature and, contrary to predictions, has no difficulty in …

Unequal Arm Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Shane L. Larson, Ronald W. Hellings, William A. Hiscock Jan 2002

Unequal Arm Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Shane L. Larson, Ronald W. Hellings, William A. Hiscock

All Physics Faculty Publications

Unlike ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors, large space-based systems will not be rigid structures. When the end stations of the laser interferometer are freely flying spacecraft, the armlengths will change due to variations in the spacecraft positions along their orbital trajectories, so the precise equality of the arms that is required in a laboratory interferometer to cancel laser phase noise is not possible. However, using a method discovered by Tinto and Armstrong, a signal can be constructed in which laser phase noise exactly cancels out, even in an unequal arm interferometer. We examine the case where the ratio of the …

Bouncing Branes, Emil Prodanov Jan 2002

Bouncing Branes, Emil Prodanov

Articles

Two classical scalar fields are minimally coupled to gravity in the Kachru-Shulz-Silverstein scenario with a rolling fifth radius. A Tolman wormhole solution is found for a R x S^3 brane with Lorentz metric and for a R x AdS_3 brane with positive definite metric.

Navigating The Starless Night: Strategies For Understanding Autobiogeography, Matthew Wolf-Meyer, Davin Heckman Jan 2002

Navigating The Starless Night: Strategies For Understanding Autobiogeography, Matthew Wolf-Meyer, Davin Heckman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Ancient mapmakers relied upon the presence of celestial bodies for their conceptualization of the world, for their external knowledge-making tools, as if a far-off body could help to make sense of our terrestrial life/as if it couldn't. Cosmology, as a practice, relied on the construction of an external body of knowledge that the local meaning-maker could situate him- or herself into, and more broadly, their entire society and culture -- the interior is determined by its relationship to the exterior (or the exteriorized). For the ancient Greeks then, the font of Western culture, this cosmology works at once …

Fine-Tuning Solution For Hybrid Inflation In Dissipative Chaotic Dynamics, Rudnei O. Ramos Nov 2001

Fine-Tuning Solution For Hybrid Inflation In Dissipative Chaotic Dynamics, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study the presence of chaotic behavior in phase space in the preinflationary stage of hybrid inflation models. This is closely related to the problem of initial conditions associated with these inflationary types of model. We then show how an expected dissipative dynamics of fields just before the onset of inflation can solve or ease considerably the problem of initial conditions, driving the system naturally toward inflation. The chaotic behavior of the corresponding dynamical system is studied by computation of the fractal dimension of the boundary in phase space separating inflationary from noninflationary trajectories. The fractal dimension for this boundary …

Comparing The Sfi Peculiar Velocities With The Pscz Gravity Field: A Velmod Analysis, E. Branchini, W. Freudling, L. N. Da Costa, C. S. Frenk, R. Giovanelli, M. P. Haynes, J. J. Salzer, G. Wegner, I. Zehavi Sep 2001

Comparing The Sfi Peculiar Velocities With The Pscz Gravity Field: A Velmod Analysis, E. Branchini, W. Freudling, L. N. Da Costa, C. S. Frenk, R. Giovanelli, M. P. Haynes, J. J. Salzer, G. Wegner, I. Zehavi

Dartmouth Scholarship

We compare the peculiar velocities derived from the I-band Tully–Fisher (TF) relation for 989 field spiral galaxies in the SFI catalogue with the predicted velocity field derived from the IRAS PSCz galaxy redshift survey. We assume linear gravitational instability theory and apply the maximum likelihood technique, VELMOD to SFI galaxies within a redshift cz LG =6000 km s−1. The resulting calibration of the TF relation is consistent with a previous, independent calibration for a similar sample of spirals residing in clusters. Our analysis provides an accurate estimate of the quantity βI ≡ Ωm0.6 …

Large-Scale Power Spectrum And Structures From The Enear Galaxy Peculiar Velocity Catalogue, S. Zaroubi, M. Bernardi, L. N. Da Costa, Y. Hoffman, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner Sep 2001

Large-Scale Power Spectrum And Structures From The Enear Galaxy Peculiar Velocity Catalogue, S. Zaroubi, M. Bernardi, L. N. Da Costa, Y. Hoffman, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We estimate the mass density fluctuations power spectrum (PS) on large scales by applying a maximum likelihood technique to the peculiar velocity data of the recently completed redshift—distance survey of early-type galaxies (hereafter ENEAR). Parametric cold dark matter (CDM)-like models for the PS are assumed, and the best-fitting parameters are determined by maximizing the probability of the model given the measured peculiar velocities of the galaxies, their distances and estimated errors. The method has been applied to CDM models with and without COBE normalization. The general results are in agreement with the high-amplitude power spectra found from similar analyses of …

Shortcuts In The Fifth Dimension, Robert Caldwell, David Langlois Jul 2001

Shortcuts In The Fifth Dimension, Robert Caldwell, David Langlois

Dartmouth Scholarship

If our Universe is a three-brane embedded in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, in which matter is confined to the brane and gravity inhabits an infinite bulk space, then the causal propagation of luminous and gravitational signals is in general different. A gravitational signal traveling between two points on the brane can take a “shortcut” through the bulk, and appear quicker than a photon traveling between the same two points along a geodesic on the brane. Similarly, in a given time interval, a gravitational signal can propagate farther than a luminous signal. We quantify this effect, and analyze the impact …

Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos Apr 2001

Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

The zero-temperature effective equation of motion is derived for a scalar field interacting with other fields. For a broad range of cases, involving interaction with as few as one or two fields, dissipative regimes are found for the scalar field system. The zero-temperature limit constitutes a baseline effect that will be prevalent in any general statistical state. Thus, the results found here provide strong evidence that dissipation is the norm not the exception for an interacting scalar field system. For application to inflationary cosmology, this provides convincing evidence that warm inflation could be a natural dynamics once proper treatment of …

Multi-Phase Transport Study Of Relativistic Nuclear Collisions, Bin Zhang, C. M. Ko, Bao-An Li, Ziwei Lin, Subrata Pal Jan 2001

Multi-Phase Transport Study Of Relativistic Nuclear Collisions, Bin Zhang, C. M. Ko, Bao-An Li, Ziwei Lin, Subrata Pal

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A multi-phase transport model (AMPT) is developed for the study of hot and dense matter produced in relativistic nuclear collisions. This model includes both initial partonic and final hadronic scattering. Using the AMPT model, we study the momentum distributions of charged particles such as protons, antiprotons, pions, and kaons in central heavy ion collisions at Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies. The results are consistent with experimental data at these energies. They indicate a significant nuclear shadowing but a relative weak jet quenching in the initial dense matter. Antiproton to proton ratio at mid-rapidity increases …

Comparison Of The Enear Peculiar Velocities With The Pscz Gravity Field, A Nusser, L. N. Da Costa, E Branchini, M. Bernardi, M V. Alonso, G Wegner Jan 2001

Comparison Of The Enear Peculiar Velocities With The Pscz Gravity Field, A Nusser, L. N. Da Costa, E Branchini, M. Bernardi, M V. Alonso, G Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a comparison between the peculiar velocity field measured from the ENEAR all-sky Dn−σ catalogue and that derived from the galaxy distribution of the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey (PSCz). The analysis is based on a modal expansion of these data in redshift space by means of spherical harmonics and Bessel functions. The effective smoothing scale of the expansion is almost linear with redshift reaching 1500kms−1 at 3000kms−1. The general flow patterns in the filtered ENEAR and PSCz velocity fields agree well within 6000kms−1, assuming a linear biasing relation between the mass and …

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies: Dipole Of The Velocity Field, L. N. Da Costa, M. Bernardi, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We use the recently completed redshift-distance survey of nearby early-type galaxies (ENEAR) to measure the dipole component of the peculiar velocity field to a depth of cz ~ 6000 km s-1. The sample consists of 1145 galaxies brighter than mB = 14.5 and with cz ≤ 7000 km s-1, uniformly distributed over the whole sky, and 129 fainter cluster galaxies within the same volume. Most of the Dn-σ distances were obtained from new spectroscopic and photometric observations conducted by this project, ensuring the homogeneity of the data over the whole sky. These 1274 galaxies are objectively assigned …

Enear Redshift-Distance Survey: Cosmological Constraints, Stefano Borgani, Mariangela Bernardi, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an analysis of the ENEAR sample of peculiar velocities of field and cluster elliptical galaxies, obtained with Dn-σ distances. We use the velocity correlation function ψ1(r) to analyze the statistics of the field object's velocities, while the analysis of the cluster data is based on the estimate of their rms peculiar velocity Vrms. The results are compared with predictions from cosmological models using linear theory. The statistics of the model velocity field is parameterized by the amplitude η8 = σ8Ω and by the shape parameter Γ of the cold dark matter-like power spectrum. …

A Spectroscopic Redshift For The Cl 0024+16 Multiple Arc System: Implications For The Central Mass Distribution, Tom Broadhurst, Xiaosheng Huang, Brenda Frye, Richard Ellis

Physics and Astronomy

We present a spectroscopic redshift of z = 1.675 for the well-known multiply lensed system of arcs seen in the z = 0.39 cluster Cl 0024+16. In contrast to earlier work, we find that the lensed images are accurately reproduced by a projected mass distribution which traces the locations of the brightest cluster elliptical galaxies, suggesting that the most significant minima of the cluster potential are not dynamically erased. The averaged mass profile is shallow and consistent with predictions of recent numerical simulations. The source redshift enables us to determine an enclosed cluster mass of M(<100 kpc h-1) = …

Using Binary Star Observations To Bound The Mass Of The Graviton, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock Jan 2000

Using Binary Star Observations To Bound The Mass Of The Graviton, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock

All Physics Faculty Publications

Interacting white dwarf binary star systems, including helium cataclysmic variable (HeCV) systems, are expected to be strong sources of gravitational radiation, and should be detectable by proposed space-based laser interferometer gravitational wave observatories such as LISA. Several HeCV star systems are presently known and can be studied optically, which will allow electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations to be correlated. Comparisons of the phases of a gravitational wave signal and the orbital light curve from an interacting binary white dwarf star system can be used to bound the mass of the graviton. Observations of typical HeCV systems by LISA could potentially …
