The study of both Be and Li gives useful clues about stellar internal structure. Of particular interest is the study of these light elements in open clusters, which have a known age and metallicity. In this paper we present a study of Be abundances in 10 F-type stars in Praesepe and a comprehensive discussion about Be abundances in other open clusters: Hyades, Pleiades, Per, Coma, and UMa. We have made observations of the doublet of Be ii around 3130 A˚ in Praesepe stars, using the Keck I telescope and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES). Beryllium abundances were derived from …

12C/13C Ratio In Planetary Nebulae From The Iue Archives, R. H. Rubin, Gary J. Ferland, E. E. Chollet, R. Horstmeyer

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigated the abundance ratio of 12C/13C in planetary nebulae by examining emission lines arising from C III 2s2p3Po2,1,0 → 2s21S0. Spectra were retrieved from the International Ultraviolet Explorer archives, and multiple spectra of the same object were co-added to achieve improved signal-to-noise ratio. The 13C hyperfine structure line at 1909.6 Å was detected in NGC 2440. The 12C/13C ratio was found to be ~4.4+/-1.2. In all other objects, we provide an upper limit for the flux of the 1910 Å line. For 23 …

Xmm-Newton Observations Of The Bl Lac Ms 0205.7+3509: A Dense, Low-Metallicity Absorber, Niall Smith, Et. Al.

Blackrock Castle Observatory Publications

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lac, MS 0205.7+3509 was observed twice with XMM-Newton. Both X-ray spectra are synchrotron-dominated, with mean 0.2–10 keV fluxes of and  erg cm-2 s-1. The X-ray spectra are well fit by a power-law with absorption above the Galactic value, however no absorption edges are detected, implying a low metallicity absorber () or an absorber with redshift above one (best-fit for an absorber with solar abundances). In either case the absorbing column density must be  cm-2. A new optical spectrum is presented, with a absorption doublet detected at , but no other significant …

Publications

Data from the four spacecraft Cluster mission during a high altitude cusp crossing on 13 February 2001 are presented. The spacecraft configuration has one leading spacecraft, with the three trailing spacecraft lying in a plane that corresponds roughly to the nominal magnetopause surface. The typical spacecraft separation is approximately 600 km. The encounter occurs under conditions of strong and steady southward Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). The cusp is identified as a seven-minute long depression in the magnetic field, associated with ion heating and a high abundance of He+. Cusp entry involves passage through a magnetopause boundary that has undergone very …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xxii. Hd 18955, A Massive K Dwarf Binary, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Frank M. Alston

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

HD 18955 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 43.3214 days and a high eccentricity of 0.761. The spectral types of the components are K0 V and K2-K3 V. The secondary is a typical early K dwarf, although its minimum mass is greater than canonical values. However, this larger mass is consistent with other early K dwarf, spectroscopic binary results. The primary is anomalous, being substantially underluminous for its radius and mass, which are equal to or slightly greater than solar values. A lack of lithium argues that the components are not pre-main-sequence stars. The large minimum masses …

The Effects Of Low-Temperature Dielectronic Recombination On The Relative Populations Of The Fe M-Shell States, S. B. Kraemer, Gary J. Ferland, J. R. Gabel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We examine the effects of low-temperature, or Δn=0, dielectronic recombination (DR) on the ionization balance of the Fe M shell (Fe IX-Fe XVI). Since Δn=0 rates are not available for these ions, we have derived estimates based on the existing rates for the first four ionization states of the CNO sequence and newly calculated rates for L-shell ions of third-row elements and Fe. For a range of ionization parameter and column density applicable to the intrinsic absorbers detected in ASCA, Chandra, and XMM-Newton observations of Seyfert galaxies, we generated two grids of photoionization models, with and …

Neutron Star Electromagnetic Field Structure, Hugh O. Thurman Iii Apr 2004

Neutron Star Electromagnetic Field Structure, Hugh O. Thurman Iii

Physics Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the neutron star magnetic field from generation to radiation production. We have investigated the spontaneous magnetization process to explain the magnetic field generation. This magnetization is then applied to determine the electromagnetic field structure of the neutron star. As an application of these two calculations, we briefly investigate several radiation mechanisms that are closely related to stellar magnetic fields.

Neutron star magnetic field generation is studied through the spontaneous magnetization process. This process was studied in the non-relativistic, ultra-relativistic, and rigorous relativistic dispersion regimes for the neutrons. Both analytical and numerical approaches show that a phase transition …

Observations Of Solar Cyclical Variations In Geocoronal Hα Column Emission Intensities, S. M. Nossal, F. L. Roesler, E. J. Mierkiewicz, R. J. Reynolds

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Observations of thermospheric + exospheric Hα column emissions by the Wisconsin Hα Mapper (WHAM) Fabry-Perot (Kitt Peak, Arizona) over the 1997–2001 rise in solar cycle 23 show a statistically significant solar cyclical variation. The higher signal-to-noise WHAM observations corroborate suggestions of a solar cycle trend in the Hα emissions seen in Wisconsin observations over solar cycle 22. Here we compare WHAM 1997 and 2000–2001 winter solstice geocoronal Hα observations toward regions of the sky with low galactic emission. The observed variation in geocoronal hydrogen column emission intensities over the solar cycle is small compared with variations in hydrogen exobase densities. …

Microsecond Spin-Flip Times In N-Gaas Measured By Time-Resolved Polarization Of Photoluminescence, John S. Colton, T. A. Kennedy, A. S. Bracker, D. Gammon Mar 2004

Microsecond Spin-Flip Times In N-Gaas Measured By Time-Resolved Polarization Of Photoluminescence, John S. Colton, T. A. Kennedy, A. S. Bracker, D. Gammon

Faculty Publications

We have observed microsecond spin-flip times in lightly doped n-GaAs, by measuring the photoluminescence polarization in the time domain with pump and probe pulses. Times up to 1.4 μs have been measured. Our results as a function of magnetic field indicated three regions governing the spin relaxation: a low field region, where spin-flip times increase due to suppression of the nuclear hyperfine interaction for localized electrons, a medium field region where spin-flip times increase due to narrowing of the hyperfine relaxation for interacting electrons, and a high field region where spin-flip times begin to level off due to the increasing …

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density In A Mock Tractor Cab, Benjamin Mahonri Faber Mar 2004

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density In A Mock Tractor Cab, Benjamin Mahonri Faber

Theses and Dissertations

An active noise control (ANC) system has been applied to the problem of attenuating low-frequency tonal noise inside small enclosures. The intended target application of the system was the reduction of the engine firing frequency inside heavy equipment cabins. The ANC system was based on a version of the filtered-x LMS adaptive algorithm, modified for the minimization of acoustic energy density (ED), rather than the more traditional minimization of squared acoustic pressure (SP). Three loudspeakers produced control signals within a mock cabin composed of a steel frame with plywood sides and a Plexiglas® front. An energy density sensor, capable of …

Searching For Planets In The Hyades. Iii. The Quest For Short-Period Planets, Diane B. Paulson, Steven H. Saar, William D. Cochran, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have been using the Keck I High Resolution Spectrograph to search for planetary companions in the Hyades cluster. We selected four stars from this sample that showed significant radial velocity variability on short timescales to search for short-period planetary companions. The radial velocities of these four stars were monitored regularly with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope for approximately 2 months, while sparse data were also taken over ∼4 months: we also obtained near-simultaneous photometric observations with one of the automatic photoelectric telescopes at Fairborn Observatory. For three of the stars, we detect photometric variability with the same period present in the …

Hd 207651: A Triple System With Δ Scuti And Ellipsoidal Variations But No Γ Doradus Pulsations, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Stephen M. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We examine HD 207651 as a possible example of a star exhibiting both γ Doradus and δ Scuti type pulsations. We find photometric periods of 0.06479 and 0.06337 days with peak-to-peak amplitudes in Johnson B of 21 and 13 mmag, respectively, clearly indicating δ Scuti pulsations. Additional light variation with a period of 0.73540 days and an even larger amplitude of 31 mmag is within the range of γ Doradus pulsation periods but results instead from the ellipticity effect. HD 207651 has a composite spectrum with a weak, narrow absorption line superposed near the center of each broad metal line. …

Constraints On The Very High Energy Emission From Bl Lacertae Objects, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Mar 2004

Constraints On The Very High Energy Emission From Bl Lacertae Objects, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We present results from observations of 29 BL Lacertae objects, taken with the Whipple Observatory 10 m gamma-ray telescope between 1995 and 2000. The observed objects are mostly at low redshift (z < 0.2), but observations of objects of up to z = 0.444 are also reported. Five of the objects are EGRET sources and two are unconfirmed TeV sources. Three of the confirmed sources of extragalactic TeV gamma rays were originally observed as part of this survey and have been reported elsewhere. No significant excesses are detected from any of the other objects observed, on timescales of days, months, or years. We report 99.9% confidence level flux upper limits for the objects for each observing season. The flux upper limits are typically 20% of the Crab flux, although for some sources, limits as sensitive as 6% of the Crab flux were derived. The results are consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton model predictions considered in this work.

Energy levels and the corresponding transition probabilities for allowed and forbidden transitions among the levels of the ground configuration and first 23 excited configurations of fluorine-like Fe XVIII have been calculated using the multiconfigurational Dirac-Fock GRASP code. A total of 379 lowest bound levels of Fe XVIII is presented, and the energy levels are identified in spectroscopic notations. Transition probabilities, oscillator strengths and line strengths for electric dipole (E1), electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) transitions among these 379 levels are also presented. The calculated energy levels and transition probabilities are compared with experimental data.

Ongoing assembly and maintenance activities at the International Space Station (ISS) require much more extravehicular activity (EVA) than did the earlier U.S. Space Shuttle missions. It is thus desirable to determine and analyze, and possibly foresee, as accurately as possible what radiation exposures crew members involved in EVAs will experience in order to minimize risks and to establish exposure limits that must not to be exceeded. A detailed CAD model of the U.S. Space Shuttle EVA Spacesuit, developed at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), is used to represent the directional shielding of an astronaut; it has detailed helmet and backpack …

Observations Of White Dwarfs In The Solar Neighborhood, Adela Kawka, Stphane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

High proper motion surveys are still adding much to our understanding of the local white dwarf population and, possibly, to the Galactic halo membership of some objects. As part of our study of white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood we have observed seven white dwarfs from the revised New Luyten Two Tenths (NLTT) catalog of Salim & Gould. We found four DA white dwarfs (NLTT 529, 49985, 53468, 55932), one DZ white dwarf (NLTT 40607) that shows a close resemblance to the unusual DZ white dwarf G165-7, and two DC white dwarfs (NLTT 19138, NLTT 52404). The white dwarf candidates …

The Intrinsic Intensity Modulation Of Psr B1937+21 At 1410 Mhz, Fredrick A. Jenet, Janusz Gil Feb 2004

The Intrinsic Intensity Modulation Of Psr B1937+21 At 1410 Mhz, Fredrick A. Jenet, Janusz Gil

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The single-pulse properties of the millisecond radio pulsar PSR B1937+21 are studied at 1410 MHz. The nongiant pulse emission regions appear to be remarkably stable, showing no pulse-to-pulse fluctuations other then those induced by the interstellar medium. This type of behavior has not been seen in any other pulsar, although it was seen in previous 430 MHz observations of this source. The stability of this source is interpreted in the context of the sparking gap model of radio pulsar emission, and a model-dependent upper bound is placed on the Lorentz factor of the outflowing plasma.

Oxygen In Open Cluster Dwarfs: Pleiades And M34, Simon C. Schuler, Jeremy R. King, L M. Hobbs, Marc H. Pinsonneault

Publications

We analyze the high-excitation O I lambda7774 triplet in high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 15 Pleiades and eight M34 open cluster dwarfs over the effective temperature range of 5048-6172 K. Relative O abundances have been derived using model atmospheres interpolated from four different sets of ATLAS9 grids. In contrast to existing non-LTE (NLTE) predictions, a dramatic increase in the O I triplet abundance with decreasing temperature is seen for both clusters, regardless of the atmospheric model. S I abundances of three Pleiades stars derived from the high-excitation lambda6053 feature mimic the O I abundance behavior. O abundances have also …

Dedicated Polarimeter Design For Hard X-Ray And Soft Gamma-Ray Astronomy, Mark L. Mcconnell, J Ledoux, John R. Macri, James M. Ryan

Space Science Center

We have developed a modular design for a hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray polrimeter that we call GRAPE (Gamma RAy Polarimeter Experiment). Optimized for the energy range of 50-300 keV, the GRAPE design is a Compton polarimeter based on the use of an array of plastic scintillator scattering elements in conjunction with a centrally positioned high-Z calorimeter detector. Here we shall review the results from a laboratory model of the baseline GRAPE design. The baseline design uses a 5-inch diameter position sensitive PMT (PSPMT) for readout of the plastic scintillator array and a small array of CsI detectors for measurement …

Boron Alloying In Gan, Gus L. W. Hart, Laurian Escalanti

Faculty Publications

Using first-principles calculations in the local density approximation, we studied effects of adding up to 6% boron to zinc-blende GaN. We found that the band gap increases monotonically with boron incorporation, in agreement with experiment. A composition-independent band-gap bowing parameter of 4.30 eV was determined, and proved to be large compared to bowing for other mixed cation systems. The formation enthalpy of mixing, ΔH, was determined for BxGa1-xN, BxGa1-xAs, and GaAs1-xNx. A comparison of enthalpies indicates that the production of BxGa1-xN films with boron concentrations of at least 5% may be possible.

Influence Of The Hall Term On Kh Instability And Reconnection Inside Kh Vortices, K. Nykyri, A. Otto Feb 2004

Influence Of The Hall Term On Kh Instability And Reconnection Inside Kh Vortices, K. Nykyri, A. Otto

Publications

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in its nonlinear stage can develop small-scale filamentary field and current structures at the flank boundaries of the magnetosphere. It has been shown previously with MHD simulations that magnetic reconnection can occur inside these narrow current layers, resulting in plasma transport from the solar wind into the magnetosphere. During periods of northward IMF, this transport is sufficient to generate a cold, dense plasma sheet on time scales consistent with satellite observations. However, when the length scales of these narrow current layers approach the ion inertia scale, the MHD approximation is not valid anymore and the Hall …

Derivation Of Moving-Coil Loudspeaker Parameters Using Plane Wave Tube Techniques, Brian Eric Anderson Jan 2004

Derivation Of Moving-Coil Loudspeaker Parameters Using Plane Wave Tube Techniques, Brian Eric Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Small-signal moving-coil loudspeaker driver parameters are traditionally derived through electrical impedance measurement techniques. These parameters are commonly called Thiele/Small parameters, after Neville Thiele and Richard Small who are credited with developing industry-standard loudspeaker modeling techniques. However, because loudspeaker drivers are electro-mechano-acoustical transducers, it should be possible to measure their parameters in physical domains other than the electrical domain. A method of measuring loudspeaker parameters from the acoustical domain will be developed. The technique uses a plane wave tube to measure acoustical properties of a baffled driver under test. Quantities such as the transmission loss through the driver are measured for …

We present results from observations taken with the Whipple 10 m very high energy γ-ray telescope with maximal sensitivity at 400 GeV during 39 hr between 2000 and 2003 in the direction of the giant radio galaxy M87. Using the entire data set, we derive a 99% confidence level upper limit on the flux of γ-ray emission above 400 GeV from M87 to be ≤6.9 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1. This suggests variability at the 90% confidence level when compared to the flux measured by the HEGRA collaboration in 1999 if the differential spectrum is steeper than a power law of …

We present K-band (2.2 mum) imaging polarimetry that resolves 19 T Tauri binary and multiple systems in the Taurus-Auriga and Scorpius-Ophiuchus star-forming regions. We observed systems with projected separations 1."5 - 7."2 (similar to200 - 1000 AU) in order to determine the relative orientation of the circumstellar disks in each binary system. Scattered light from these disks is polarized, allowing us to deduce the position angle of the disk on the sky from the position angle of polarization even though our observations do not resolve the disks themselves. We detected measurable polarization ( typically 0.5% - 2%, with typical uncertainty …

gamma Cas is the prototypical classical B0.5e star and is now known to be the primary in a wide binary system. It has long been famous for its unique hard X-ray characteristics, among which are variations that correlate with changes in a number of optical light and UV line and continuum properties. These peculiarities have led to a picture in which processes on or near the Be star produce the observed X-ray emission. In this paper we report on a 53 ks Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observation of this target. An inspection of our spectrum shows that it …

We critique the hypothesisthat the first starswere very massive stars(VMSs; M > 140 M).We review the twomajor lines of evidencefor the existence ofVMSs: (1) that therelative metal abundances ofextremely metal-poor Galactic halostars show evidence ofVMS enrichment and (2)that the high electron-scatteringoptical depth (e) tothe cosmic microwave backgroundfound by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe(WMAP) requires VMSs forreionization in a concordanceCDM cosmology. The yieldpatterns of VMSs explodingas pair-instability supernovae areincompatible with the Fe-peakand r-process abundances inhalo stars. Be Star Spectroscopy Using The Uca Fiber-Fed Spectrograph, Scott Austin

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Beginning in June 2003, undergraduate students and the author have spectroscopically monitored bright Be stars using a custom built fiber-fed spectrograph attached to the UCA Observatory 11-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. We have obtained 0.8 Angstrom/pixel resolution spectra of the H-alpha line for over forty Be-Stars. Some have been observed on multiple dates in order to detect any temporal changes. Line profiles, velocities, and observed variations for some of these stars will be presented.
