Possible Identification Of A Metal-Rich Old Moving Group: High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Candidate Members, Abigail R. Daane, Jeremy R. King, Simon C. Schuler

Using new high-resolution spectroscopic observations from both the McDonald Observatory 2.7 m and Kitt Peak National Observatory 4 m telescopes, we observed four candidate members of the Ursa Major moving group previously suggested to instead belong to a significantly older kinematic assemblage. The Fe abundances we measure strongly suggest that these stars are not UMa members but form a more metal-rich group of stars (+0.10 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ +0.18) with an age near 3 Gyr. Our [Ca/H] determinations corroborate this result. The apparent similarities in metallicity and previously discovered UVW space motions lend credence to prior suggestions that these stars …

Initial Mass Function Effects On The Colour Evolution Of Disk Galaxies, P. Westera, M. Samland, Stefan Kautsch, R. Buser, K. Ammon
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles
Aims. In this work, we want to find out if the IMF can be determined from colour images, integrated colours, or mass-to-light ratios, especially at high redshift, where galaxies cannot be resolved into individual stars, which would enable us to investigate dependencies of the IMF on cosmological epoch.
Methods. We use chemo-dynamical models to investigate the influence of the Initial Mass Function (IMF) on the evolution of a Milky Way-type disk galaxy, in particular of its colours.
Results. We find that the effect of the IMF on the internal gas absorption is larger than its effect on …

We present the first high-resolution, ground-based observations of HCN and C2H2 toward the T Tauri binary star system GV Tau. We detected strong absorption due to HCN nu3 and weak C2H2 [nu3 and nu2+(nu4+nu5)0+] absorption toward the primary (GV Tau S) but not the infrared companion. We also report CO column densities and rotational temperatures, and present abundances relative to CO of HCN/CO~0.6% and C2H/CO~1.2% and an upper limit for CH4/CO

The southwestern (SW) part of the Galactic H II region M17 contains an obscured ionization front that is most easily seen at infrared and radio wavelengths. It is nearly edge-on, thus offering an excellent opportunity to study the way in which the gas changes from fully ionized to molecular as radiation from the ionizing stars penetrates into the gas. M17 is also one of the very few H II regions for which the magnetic field strength can be measured in the photodissociation region ( PDR) that forms the interface between the ionized and molecular gas. Here we model an observed …
A Three‐Dimensional Numerical Method For Modelling Weakly Ionized Plasmas, Stephen O'Sullivan, Turlough Downes
A Three‐Dimensional Numerical Method For Modelling Weakly Ionized Plasmas, Stephen O'Sullivan, Turlough Downes
Articles
Astrophysical fluids under the influence of magnetic fields are often subjected to single- or two-fluid approximations. In the case of weakly ionized plasmas, however, this can be inappropriate due to distinct responses from the multiple constituent species to both collisional and non-collisional forces. As a result, in dense molecular clouds and protostellar accretion discs, for instance, the conductivity of the plasma may be highly anisotropic leading to phenomena such as Hall and ambipolar diffusion strongly influencing the dynamics.
An Isotropic Metric, Joseph D. Rudmin
An Isotropic Metric, Joseph D. Rudmin
Virginia Journal of Science
An isotropic metric for a black hole and a better vacuum condition \nabla^2 V_G =0 are presented which yield distinct terms for the energy densities of ordinary matter and gravitational fields in the Einstein tensor (G^44 =-g^2 (2\nabla^2 V_G +(\nabla V_G)^2)). This model resolves an inconsistency between electromagnetism and gravity in the calculation of field energy. Resolution of this inconsistency suggests a slight modification of the Einstein equation to gG^\mu\nu = 8\pi G T^\mu\nu.
Butterfly Diagram And Activity Cycles In Hr 1099, Svetlana Berdyugina, Gregory W. Henry
Butterfly Diagram And Activity Cycles In Hr 1099, Svetlana Berdyugina, Gregory W. Henry
Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications
We analyze photometric data of the active RS CVn-type star HR 1099 for the years 1975-2006 with an inversion technique and reveal the nature of two activity cycles of 15-16 yr and 5.3 ± 0.1 yr duration. The 16 yr cycle is related to variations of the total spot area and is coupled with the differential rotation, while the 5.3 yr cycle is caused by the symmetric redistribution of the spotted area between the opposite stellar hemispheres (flip-flop cycle). We recover long-lived active regions comprising two active longitudes that migrate in the orbital reference frame with a variable rate because …

The Chemical Distribution In A Subluminous Type Ia Supernova: Hubble Space Telescope Images Of The Sn 1885 Remnant, Robert A. Fesen, Peter A. Hoflich, Andrew J. S. Hamilton, Molly C. Hammell
Dartmouth Scholarship
SN 1885 was a probable subluminous SN Ia that occurred in the bulge of the Andromeda galaxy, M31, at a projected location 16'' from the nucleus. Here we present and analyze Hubble Space Telescope images of the SN 1885 remnant seen in absorption against the M31 bulge via the resonance lines of Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, and Fe II. Viewed in Ca II H and K line absorption, the remnant appears as a nearly black circular spot with an outermost angular radius of 0.40'' ± 0.025'', implying a maximum linear radius of 1.52 ± 0.15 pc at M31's …
New Techniques To Determine Ages Of Open Clusters Using White Dwarfs, E. J. Jeffery, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.
New Techniques To Determine Ages Of Open Clusters Using White Dwarfs, E. J. Jeffery, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.
Publications
Currently there are two main techniques for independently determining the ages of stellar populations: main-sequence evolution theory (via cluster isochrones) and white dwarf cooling theory. Open clusters provide the ideal environment for the calibration of these two clocks. Because current techniques to derive cluster ages from white dwarfs are observationally challenging, we discuss the feasibility of determining white dwarf ages from the brighter white dwarfs alone. This would eliminate the requirement of observing the coolest (i.e., faintest) white dwarfs. We discuss our method for testing this new idea, as well as the required photometric precision and prior constraints on metallicity, …

The Distribution Of Activity On The Rs Cvn–Type Star Sz Piscium, Joel A. Eaton, Gregory W. Henry

We use contemporaneous spectra and BV light curves to derive a model of the distribution of spots and active regions on the cooler component of SZ Psc for the 1993–1994 season. For that epoch, both spots and active regions were visible at all rotational phases of this chromospherically active star. The lack of large distortions of Doppler profiles of optical lines argues for ≳15 spots with angular radii of ≲8°–10°. Transition region emission was constant to within ±12% over the orbit, nor was it eclipsed appreciably. This leads us to estimate that there are at least 20 active regions, perhaps …

We present photometry of HD 189733 during eight transits of its close-in giant planet, and out-of-transit photometry spanning 2 yr. Using the transit photometry, we determine the stellar and planetary radii and the photometric ephemeris. Outside of transits, there are quasi-periodic flux variations with a 13.4 day period that we attribute to stellar rotation. In combination with previous results, we derive upper limits on the orbital eccentricity and on the true angle between the stellar rotation axis and planetary orbit (as opposed to the angle between the projections of those axes on the sky).

We present the first results of a large Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) survey of Galactic globular clusters. This Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury project is designed to obtain photometry with S/N (signal-to-noise ratio) 10 for main-sequence stars with masses 0.2 M⊙ in a sample of globulars using the ACS Wide Field Channel. Here we focus on clusters without previous HST imaging data. These include NGC 5466, NGC 6779, NGC 5053, NGC 6144, Palomar 2, E3, Lyngå 7, Palomar 1, and NGC 6366. Our color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) extend reliably from the horizontal branch to as much as …

Grating Lobe Reduction In Transducer Arrays Through Structural Filtering Of Supercritical Plates, Brian E. Anderson, Stephen A. Hambric, Jack W. Hughes
Faculty Publications
The effect of placing a structural acoustic filter between water and the transducer elements of an array to help reduce undesirable grating lobes is investigated. A supercritical plate is mounted to transducer elements with a thin decoupling polyurethane layer between the transducers and the plate. The plate acts as a radiation/incidence angle filter to pass energy at angles near normal incidence, but suppress energy at large incidence angles. Grating lobe reduction is achieved at the expense of limiting the available steering of the main lobe. Within this steer angle limitation, the main lobe can be steered as normal while the …
Development Of An H-Alpha Index For The Detection Of Pms Candidates In Young Open Clusters, Liberty Rae Evanko
Development Of An H-Alpha Index For The Detection Of Pms Candidates In Young Open Clusters, Liberty Rae Evanko
Theses and Dissertations
One phase of formation of medium- and low-mass stars is the optically visible phase known as the pre-main-sequence or PMS phase. In order to further the understanding of this phase, more of these PMS objects need to be identified and classified. Previous techniques have used photometry to identify possible PMS objects by their characteristic Hα emission. Once identified these objects can be studied spectroscopically yielding complete PMS classification. This study develops a method to locate these emission objects that overcomes two limitations of previous techniques. The first limitation is the need for the creation of reddening maps. It is eliminated …

Large Merger Recoils And Spin Flips From Generic Black Hole Binaries, Manuela Campanelli, Carlos O. Lousto, Y. Zlochower, David Merritt
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report the first results from the evolution of generic black hole binaries, i.e., binaries containing unequal-mass black holes with misaligned spins. Our configuration, which has a mass ratio of 2 : 1, consists of an initially nonspinning hole orbiting a larger, rapidly spinning hole (specific spin a/m = 0.885), with the spin direction oriented -45° with respect to the orbital plane. We track the inspiral and merger for ~2 orbits and find that the remnant receives a substantial kick of 454 km s-1, more than twice as large as the maximum kick from nonspinning binaries. The remnant …

We present 426 epochs of optical monitoring data spanning 1000 days from 2003 December to 2006 June for the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J1004+4112. The time delay between the A and B images is tBA . 38: 42: 0 days (2 . 4) in the expected sense that B leads A and the overall time ordering is C-B-A-D-E. The measured delay invalidates all published models. The models probably failed because they neglected the perturbations from cluster member galaxies. Models including the galaxies can fit the data well, but conclusions about the clustermass distribution should await themeasurement of the longer, and …

He I Emission In The Orion Nebula And Implications For Primordial Helium Abundance, R. L. Porter, Gary J. Ferland, K. B. Macadam
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We apply a recently developed theoretical model of helium emission to observations of both the Orion Nebula and a sample of extragalactic H II regions. In the Orion analysis, we eliminate some weak and blended lines and compare theory and observation for our reduced line list. With our best theoretical model we find an average difference between theoretical and observed intensities (Ipred/Iobs-1)=6.5%. We argue that both the red and blue ends of the spectrum may have been inadequately corrected for reddening. For the 22 highest quality lines, with 3499 Å≤λ≤6678 Å, our best model …

V838 Her and V4160 Sgr were two of the fastest classical novae ever observed, exhibiting light curve declines of 2 mag in less than 2 days. Both novae also showed strong neon emission lines, indicative of an outburst occurring on an oxygen-neon-magnesium white dwarf. Being the brighter of the two, V838 Her has an extensive set of X-ray to radio observations obtained during its first year after outburst. V4160 Sgr has a more modest set of ultraviolet and optical spectra, which show it to be similar to V838 Her, not just in its light curve evolution but also in its …

Bounds And Conditions: A Kolob In Our Solar System?, David D. Allred
Faculty Publications
In 2003, Dialogue ran adjacent essays by two scientists, David Tolman and David Allred. The two Davids had been students together at Princeton, attending the same student ward. Decades after Princeton, Tolman had left Mormonism and Allred had stayed. Their essays are a fascinating juxtaposition. In the course of his piece, David Allred ventured for a few paragraphs into a discussion of the planet Jupiter and its role as a governor and protector in our solar system—a type of Kolob. Although the other author dismissed the topic as “fanciful physics,” my own interest was piqued. I asked Dr. Allred, who …
Induced Nested Galactic Bars Inside Assembling Dark Matter Halos, Clayton Heller, Isaac Shlosman, Evangelie Athanassoula
Induced Nested Galactic Bars Inside Assembling Dark Matter Halos, Clayton Heller, Isaac Shlosman, Evangelie Athanassoula
Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We investigate the formation and evolution of nested bar systems in disk galaxies in a cosmological setting by following the development of an isolated dark matter (DM) and baryon density perturbation. The disks form within the assembling triaxial DM halos, and the feedback from the stellar evolution is accounted for in terms of supernovae and OB stellar winds. Focusing on a representative model, we show the formation of an oval disk and of a first generation of nested bars with characteristic subkiloparsec sizes and a few kiloparsec sizes. The system evolves through successive dynamical couplings and decouplings, forcing the gas …

Photometry And Spectroscopy Of 11 Γ Doradus Stars, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Stephen M. Henry
Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications
We have used precise photometric and high-dispersion spectroscopic observations to study 11 γ Doradus stars, 10 of them newly confirmed. Only five of these 11 γ Doradus stars appear to be single; two are primaries of double-lined spectroscopic binaries, one is the secondary of a double-lined binary, two are primaries of visual binaries and, in the case of the double-lined binary (HD 86371), either or both components could be a pulsating γ Doradus star. We have determined a preliminary orbital period of 5.32 days for the double-lined binary HD 41547. Several of the stars show spectroscopic line-profile and low-amplitude radial …

The Effect Of Cluster Environment On Galaxy Evolution In The Pegasus I Cluster, Lorenza Levy, James A. Rose, Jacqueline H. Van Gorkom, Brian Chaboyer
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present neutral hydrogen observations of 54 galaxies in the Pegasus Cluster. The observations include single-dish H I measurements, obtained with the Arecibo telescope for all 54 galaxies in the sample, as well as H I images obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) for 10 of these. The Arecibo profiles reveal an overall H I deficiency in the cluster, with similar to 40% of the galaxies in the core of the cluster showing modest deficiencies of typically a factor of 2-3. The HI morphology of so me galaxies shows that the HI disk is smaller than the optical disk …

The Metallicity Distribution Of Intracluster Stars In Virgo, Benjamin F. Willaims, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.
Publications
We have used the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to detect and measure ~5300 stars in a single intracluster field in the Virgo Cluster. By performing F606W and F814W photometry on these stars, we have determined their metallicity distribution function and constrained the types of stars present in this portion of Virgo's intracluster space. Based on the small number of stars detected that were brighter than the red giant branch (RGB) tip, we suggest that in this region, Virgo's intracluster stars are mostly old (10 Gyr). Through analysis of the RGB stars themselves, we determine that …

The Resolved Stellar Populations Of A Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy In The Virgo Cluster, Patrick R. Durell, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.
Publications
We report on the discovery of a faint (MV ~ -10.6 ± 0.2) dwarf spheroidal galaxy on deep F606W and F814W Hubble Space Telescope images of a Virgo intracluster field. The galaxy is easily resolved in our images, as our color magnitude diagram (CMD) extends 1 magnitude beyond the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). Thus, it is the deepest CMD for a small dwarf galaxy inside a cluster environment. Using the colors of the RGB stars, we derive a metal abundance for the dwarf of [M/H] = -2.3 ± 0.3 and show that the metallicity dispersion …

We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of four G-K dwarfs, namely HD 166, epsilon Eri, χ1 Ori, and κ1 Cet. In three cases, we find a clear spatial association between photospheric and chromospheric active regions. For χ1 Ori we do not find appreciable variations of photospheric temperature or chromospheric Hα emission. We applied a spot/plage model to the observed rotational modulation of temperature and flux to derive spot/plage parameters and to reconstruct a rough "three-dimensional" map of the outer atmosphere of κ1 Cet, HD 166, and epsilon Eri.

A sample of 196 AGNs and ULIRGs observed by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer is analyzed to study the distribution of the strength of the 9.7 μm silicate feature. Average spectra are derived for quasars, Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 AGNs, and ULIRGs. We find that quasars are characterized by silicate features in emission and Seyfert 1s equally by emission or weak absorption. Seyfert 2s are dominated by weak silicate absorption, and ULIRGs are characterized by strong silicate absorption (mean apparent optical depth about 1.5). Luminosity distributions show that luminosities at rest frame 5.5 μm are similar …

We present models that reproduce the observed double-shell structure of the Homunculus Nebula around η Carinae, including the stratification of infrared H2 and [Fe II] emission seen in data obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on Gemini South, as well as the corresponding stratified grain temperature seen in thermal-infrared data. Tuning the model to match the observed shell thickness allows us to determine the threshold density that permits survival of H2. An average density of nH~=(0.5-1)×107 cm-3 in the outer zone is required to allow H2 to exist at all latitudes in the …

Ultraviolet spectra of α Tau (K5 III) obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) show many emission lines affected by broad absorption from the strong wind of this red giant star. For the Mg II h and k lines there is also a narrow absorption feature in the midst of the wind absorption that has been interpreted as being from α Tau's wind-interstellar medium (ISM) interaction region (i.e., its "astrosphere"). We try to reproduce this absorption using hydrodynamic models of the α Tau astrosphere, which show that stellar wind material heated, compressed, and decelerated at the wind's termination …

We present new observations with the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope of the solid-CO2 absorption feature near 15 μm in the spectra of eight field stars behind the Taurus complex of dark clouds. Solid CO2 is detected in six lines of sight. New results are combined with previous data to investigate the correlation of CO2 column density with those of other major ice constituents (H2O and CO) and with extinction. CO2 is shown to display a "threshold extinction" effect, i.e., a minimum extinction (A0 = 4.3 ± 1.0 mag) required for detection, behavior similar to that previously …

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations at very high energies (VHE; E > 100 GeV) can impose tight constraints on some GRB emission models. Many GRB afterglow models predict a VHE component similar to that seen in blazars and plerions, in which the GRB spectral energy distribution has a double-peaked shape extending into the VHE regime. VHE emission coincident with delayed X-ray flare emission has also been predicted. GRB follow-up observations have had high priority in the observing program at the Whipple 10 m gamma-ray telescope, and GRBs will continue to be high-priority targets as the next-generation observatory, VERITAS, comes online. Upper limits …
