A comprehensive data set is reported for the two-body photodisintegration cross section of 3He using mono-energetic photon beams at eleven energies between 7.0 and 16.0 MeV. A 3He + Xe high-pressure gas scintillator served as target and detector. Although our data are in much better agreement with our state-of-the-art theoretical calculations than the majority of the previous data, these calculations underpredict the new data by about 10%. This disagreement suggests an incomplete understanding of the dynamics of the three-nucleon system and its response to electromagnetic probes.

We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of 11 regions south-east (SE) of the Bright Bar in the Orion Nebula, along a radial from the exciting star θ1 Ori C, extending from 2.6 to 12.1 arcmin. Our Cycle 5 programme obtained deep spectra with matching Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) short-high (SH) and long-high (LH) aperture grid patterns. Most previous IR missions observed only the inner few arcmin (the ‘Huygens’ Region). The extreme sensitivity of Spitzer in the 10–37 μm spectral range permitted us to measure many lines of interest to much larger distances from θ1 Ori C. Orion is the …

We report a detection (3.5 × 1037± 5.6 × 1036 erg s−1) of the optical coronal emission line [Fe X] λ6374 and upper limits of four other coronal lines using high-resolution VIMOS spectra centred on NGC 4696, the brightest cluster galaxy in the Centaurus cluster. Emission from these lines is indicative of gas at temperatures between 1 × 106−5 × 106 K, so traces the interstellar gas in NGC 4696. The rate of cooling derived from the upper limits is consistent with the cooling rate from X-ray observations (∼10 M⊙ yr …

The emission spectra of YH and YD molecules have been investigated in the 3600–12 000 cm−1 region using a Fourier transform spectrometer. Molecules were formed in an yttrium hollow cathode lamp operated with a continuous flow of a mixture of Ne and Ar gases, and YH and YD were observed together in the same spectra. A group of bands observed near 1 μm have been identified as 0-0 and 1-1 bands of the A1Δ-X1Σ+ and B1Π-X1Σ+ transitions of YH and the 0-0 bands of the same two transitions …

Superluminal Neutrinos At Opera Confront Pion Decay Kinematics, Ramanath Cowsick, Shmuel Nussinov, Utpal Sarkar
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Violation of Lorentz invariance (VLI) has been suggested as an explanation of the superluminal velocities of muon neutrinos reported by OPERA. In this Letter, we show that the amount of VLI required to explain this result poses severe difficulties with the kinematics of the pion decay, extending its lifetime and reducing the momentum carried away by the neutrinos. We show that the OPERA experiment limits alpha = (upsilon(v) - c)/c < 4 x 10(-6). We then take recourse to cosmic-ray data on the spectrum of muons and neutrinos generated in Earth's atmosphere to provide a stronger bound on VLI: (upsilon - c)/c < 10(-12).

Hydrogenation Of Magnesium Nanoblades: The Effect Of Concentration Dependent Hydrogen Diffusion, Bo Yang, Yuping He, Yiping Zhao
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
By assuming the H diffusion coefficient and H adsorption rate to be exponentially and linearly dependent on concentration, a physical model is developed to predict the hydrogenation process of Mg nanoblades. The predicted H uptake curves agree well with the experimental data from V-coated Mg nanoblades. The obtained H diffusion coefficients in MgHx between Mg and MgH2 have nearly three orders of magnitude variation. The characteristic time of H surface adsorption is longer than that of H diffusion in Mg but shorter than that in MgH2 for 100 nm thick nanoblades. A hydride shell is not formed during the hydrogenation.
Flux Variation Of Cosmic Muons, N. Ramesh, M. Hawron, C. Martin, A. Bachri
Flux Variation Of Cosmic Muons, N. Ramesh, M. Hawron, C. Martin, A. Bachri
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In the current paper, we analyzed the variation of cosmic radiation flux with elevation, time of the year and ambient temperature with the help of a portable cosmic muon detector, the construction of which was completed by a team from Southern Arkansas University (SAU) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Cosmic muons and gamma rays traverse two synchronized scintillators connected to two photomultiplier tubes (PMT) via light guides, and generate electronic pulses which we counted using a Data Acquisition Board (DAQ). Because muons are the product of collisions between high-energy cosmic rays and atmospheric nuclei, and therefore shower onto earth, …

The Core Collapse Supernova Rate In The Sdss-Ii Supernova Survey, Matthew Frederick Taylor
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey II Supernova Survey (SDSS-II SN), though designed as a type Ia supernova search for cosmology, also discovered a large sample of core collapse supernovae (CCSN). I use the SDSS-II SN data to measure the volumetric CCSN rate in the redshift range (0.03 < z < 0.09), finding a volume-averaged rate of 0.98±0.18 ×10⊃−4⊃h⊂70⊂⊃3⊃yr⊃−1⊃Mpc⊃−3⊃. The CCSN luminosity function is also extracted from the data, and its implications on the cosmic star formation history are considered.
Balloon Borne Mars Research Platforms, Sean Michael Hancock
Balloon Borne Mars Research Platforms, Sean Michael Hancock
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Aerial platforms can fill a measurement gap between orbiters and rovers, providing planetary scale high resolution in situ measurements, access to scientifically interesting terrain that is either inaccessible or hazardous to rovers, and serve as a planet-wide delivery platforms to deploy surface probes and rovers to areas inaccessible given existing entry, descent, and landing systems. A permanent robotic outpost on the Martian surface can utilize locally-derived hydrogen as a lifting gas for balloon systems deployed from Mars. That approach can simplify the inflation and launch of aerial vehicles while allowing for a long duration deployment campaign that is not constrained …

Context. After the launch of the Swift satellite, the gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical light-curve smoothness paradigm has been questioned thanks to the faster and better sampled optical follow-up, which has unveiled a very complex behaviour. This complexity is triggering the interest of the whole GRB community. The GROND multi-channel imager is used to study optical and near-infrared (NIR) afterglows of GRBs with unprecedented optical and near-infrared temporal and spectral resolution. The GRB 081029 has a very prominent optical rebrightening event and is an outstanding example of the application of the multi-channel imager to GRB afterglows. Aims. Here we exploit the …

Variable High-Order Overset Grid Methods For Mixed Steady And Unsteady Multiscale Viscous Hypersonic Nonequilibrium Flows, A. Lani, Bjorn Sjögreen, Helen Yee, W, D. Henshaw
United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications
The objective of the current paper † is a further validation of the overset grid capability for high-speed chemical nonequilibrium flows. The current investigation, which is a follow-up on previous work by (Sj¨ogreen & Yee 2009b), (Lani et al. 2010a), (Wang et al. 2009), (Wang et al. 2010), (Lani et al. 2010b), extends the use of variable order methods for both inviscid and viscous chemical nonequilibrium flows with strong shocks on 2D and 3D multiblock overlapping grids. A 5-species and one-temperature air model in chemical nonequilibrium is considered in all cases. Second-order TVD, fifth- or higher-order WENO schemes are applied …

Fine-Scale Structures In Saturn's Rings Waves, Wakes And Ghosts, Kevin Baille
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Cassini mission provided wonderful tools to explore Saturn, its satellites and its rings system. The UVIS instrument allowed stellar occultation observations of structures in the rings with the best resolution available (around 10 meters depending on geometry and navigation), bringing our understanding of the physics of the rings to the next level. In particular, we have been able to observe, dissect, model and test the interactions between the satellites and the rings. We first looked at kilometer-wide structures generated by resonances with satellites orbiting outside the main rings. The observation of structures in the C ring and their association …

We present a global analysis of kinematics and metallicity in the nearest S0 galaxy, NGC 3115, along with implications for its assembly history. The data include high-quality wide-field imaging from Suprime-Cam on the Subaru telescope, and multi-slit spectra of the field stars and globular clusters (GCs) obtained using Keck-DEIMOS/LRIS and Magellan-IMACS. Within two effective radii, the bulge (as traced by the stars and metal-rich GCs) is flattened and rotates rapidly (v/σ gsim 1.5). At larger radii, the rotation declines dramatically to v/σ ~ 0.7, but remains well aligned with the inner regions. The radial decrease in characteristic metallicity of both …

We analyze our accurate kinematical data for the old clusters in the inner regions of M31. These velocities are based on high signal-to-noise Hectospec data. The data are well suited for analysis of M31's inner regions because we took particular care to correct for contamination by unresolved field stars from the disk and bulge in the fibers. The metal-poor clusters show kinematics that are compatible with a pressure-supported spheroid. The kinematics of metal-rich clusters, however, argue for a disk population. In particular the innermost region (inside 2 kpc) shows the kinematics of the x 2 family of bar periodic orbits, …

Here we present the colours of individual globular clusters (GCs) around the massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1407 out to a projected galactocentric radius of 140 kpc or 17 galaxy effective radii (Re). Such data are a proxy for the halo metallicity. We find steep, and similar, metallicity gradients of ∼−0.4 dex dex−1 for both the blue (metal poor) and red (metal rich) GC subpopulations within 5–8.5 Re (40–70 kpc). At larger radii the mean GC colours (metallicity) are constant. A similar behaviour is seen in a wide-field study of M87's GC system, and in our own Galaxy. We interpret these …

Context. Some galaxy clusters exhibit shallow or even cored dark matter density profiles in their central regions rather than the predicted steep or cuspy profiles, conflicting with the standard understanding of dark matter. NGC 3311 is the central cD galaxy of the Hydra I cluster (Abell 1060). Aims. We use globular clusters around NGC 3311, combined with kinematical data of the galaxy itself, to investigate the dark matter distribution in the central region of Hydra I. Methods. Radial velocities of 118 bright globular clusters, based on VLT/VIMOS mask spectroscopy, are used to calculate velocity dispersions which are well defined out …
Problems In Classical Potential Theory With Applications To Mathematical Physics, Erik Lundberg
Problems In Classical Potential Theory With Applications To Mathematical Physics, Erik Lundberg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis we are interested in some problems regarding harmonic functions. The topics are divided into three chapters.
Chapter 2 concerns singularities developed by solutions of the Cauchy problem for a holomorphic elliptic equation, especially Laplace's equation. The principal motivation is to locate the singularities of the Schwarz potential. The results have direct applications to Laplacian growth (or the Hele-Shaw problem).
Chapter 3 concerns the Dirichlet problem when the boundary is an algebraic set and the data is a polynomial or a real-analytic function. We pursue some questions related to the Khavinson-Shapiro conjecture. A main topic of interest is …
