We have cross-matched the LAMOST DR3 with the Gaia DR1 TGAS catalogs and obtained a sample of 166,827 stars with reliable kinematics. A technique based on the wavelet transform was applied to detect significant overdensities in velocity space among five subsamples divided by spatial position. In total, 16 significant overdensities of stars with very similar kinematics were identified. Among these, four are new stream candidates and the rest are previously known groups. Both the U–V velocity and metallicity distributions of the local sample show a clear gap between the Hercules structure and the Hyades–Pleiades structure. The U– …

We report the discovery of KELT J041621-620046, a moderately bright (J ~ 10.2) M-dwarf eclipsing binary system at a distance of 39 ± 3 pc. KELT J041621-620046 was first identified as an eclipsing binary using observations from the Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope (KELT) survey. The system has a short orbital period of ~1.11 days and consists of components with and in nearly circular orbits. The radii of the two stars are and . Full system and orbital properties were determined (to ∼10% error) by conducting an EBOP (Eclipsing Binary Orbit Program) global modeling of the high precision photometric and spectroscopic …

We report the detection of CO(2–1) emission coincident with the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of the high- redshift galaxy cluster SpARCS1049+56, with the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR) on the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT). We confirm a spectroscopic redshift for the gas of z = 1.7091 ± 0.0004, which is consistent with the systemic redshift of the cluster galaxies of z = 1.709. The line is well fit by a single-component Gaussian with an RSR-resolution-corrected FWHM of 569 ± 63kms−1. We see no evidence for multiple velocity components in the gas, as might be expected from the multiple image components seen …
Accelerator Based Fusion Reactor, Keh-Fei Liu, Alexander Wu Chao
Accelerator Based Fusion Reactor, Keh-Fei Liu, Alexander Wu Chao
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
A feasibility study of fusion reactors based on accelerators is carried out. We consider a novel scheme where a beam from the accelerator hits the target plasma on the resonance of the fusion reaction and establish characteristic criteria for a workable reactor. We consider the reactions d+t→n+α, d+3He→p+α and p+11B→3α in this study. The critical temperature of the plasma is determined from overcoming the stopping power of the beam with the fusion energy gain. The needed plasma lifetime is determined …
An Upper Limit On The Tightening Of Galactic Spiral Arm Pitch Angle In Cosmic Time, Douglas William Shields
An Upper Limit On The Tightening Of Galactic Spiral Arm Pitch Angle In Cosmic Time, Douglas William Shields
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
We present Spirality, a novel method of measuring pitch angle by fitting galaxy images to spiral templates of known pitch. Using this algorithm in concert with 2-dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (2DFFT), we determined that the pitch angle of the redshift 2.011 galaxy GZ5001 (J2000 RA 189.14811 degrees, Dec 62.24002 degrees) is approximately (16.2 +/- 2.6) degrees. The redshift 2.3219 galaxy GS21 (J2000 RA 53.14863 degrees, Dec -27.95469 degrees), which is believed to be the most distant galaxy with visible spiral structure yet measured, has a pitch of approximately (-10.6 +/- 1.6) degrees. Using a large sample of galaxies from the …

Growth And Survivability Of Microorganisms At Martian Temperatures And Pressures, Rebecca Lynne Mickol
Growth And Survivability Of Microorganisms At Martian Temperatures And Pressures, Rebecca Lynne Mickol
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The discovery of methane in the martian atmosphere via numerous ground- and space-based sources has prompted the study of methanogens as models for life on Mars. Methanogens are microorganisms within the domain Archaea, many of which utilize carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen to produce methane. The non-photosynthetic nature of methanogens indicates that they could exist in sub-surface environments, protected from harmful UV and ionizing radiation on the surface of Mars. These organisms also do not require organics, which are sparse on the planet.
Additionally, the wide variety of environments we find life in on Earth, as well as evidence for …
Understanding Progenitors Of Gamma Ray Bursts With Multi-Wavelength Properties, Ye Li
Understanding Progenitors Of Gamma Ray Bursts With Multi-Wavelength Properties, Ye Li
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the most brilliant explosions in the universe, named for their intense, seconds-duration $\gamma$-ray emission. They are generally classified into two categories according to the durations of their $\gamma$-ray emission: the long-duration GRBs (LGRBs) with durations more than 2 seconds, and the short-duration GRBs (SGRBs) with durations less than 2 seconds. Most SGRBs are believed to originate from mergers of compact stars (e.g., neutron star-neutron star and neutron star-black hole; also known as Type I GRBs by their physical mechanism), while the LGRBs are thought to originate from core-collapse of massive stars (Type II). In addition …
Secular Resonances During Main-Sequence And Post-Main-Sequence Planetary System Dynamics, Jeremy L. Smallwood
Secular Resonances During Main-Sequence And Post-Main-Sequence Planetary System Dynamics, Jeremy L. Smallwood
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
We investigate gravitational perturbations of an asteroid belt by secular resonances. We ap- ply analytic and numerical models to main–sequence and post–main–sequence planetary systems. First, we investigate how the asteroid impact rate on the Earth is affected by the architecture of the planetary system. We find that the nu6 resonance plays an important role in the asteroid collision rate with the Earth. Compared to exoplanetary systems, the solar system is somewhat special in its lack of a super–Earth mass planet in the inner solar system. We therefore consider the effects of the presence of a super–Earth in the terrestrial planet …
The Formation And Dynamics Of Clouds In The Environment Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Timothy Waters
The Formation And Dynamics Of Clouds In The Environment Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Timothy Waters
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most luminous objects in the universe and are known to be powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies. AGN clouds are prominent components of successful models that attempt to unify the diversity of AGN. These clouds are often hypothesized to be the source of the broad and narrow line emission features seen in AGN spectra. Moreover, the high column densities of gas needed to account for broad absorption lines has been attributed to the same population of clouds, while the motion of AGN clouds has been invoked to …

Stellar activity observed as large surface spots, radio flares, or emission lines is often found in binary systems. UX Arietis exhibits these signs of activity, originating on the K0 subgiant primary component. Our aim is to resolve the binary, measure the orbital motion, and provide accurate stellar parameters such as masses and luminosities to aid in the interpretation of the observed phenomena. Using the CHARA six-telescope optical long-baseline array on Mount Wilson, California, we obtained amplitudes and phases of the interferometric visibility on baselines up to 330 m in length, resolving the two components of the binary. We reanalyzed archival …
Quantum Physics And Relativity In Lovecraft's Fiction, Garrison Mccammon
Quantum Physics And Relativity In Lovecraft's Fiction, Garrison Mccammon
English and Creative Writing Summer Fellows
The early twentieth century brought about some of the best and most influential horror or weird tales ever written in the English speaking world. The most impressive and most lauded author of the group composed of such figures as Algernon Blackwood, M. R. James, Arthur Machen, Clark A. Smith, and Robert E. Howard was H. P. Lovecraft. Posthumously declared the literary successor to Edgar Allan Poe, Lovecraft’s fiction and tales of terror have cast such a huge shadow that every significant author in weird writing since his passing has claimed him as a literary heir. Lovecraft’s works were a landmark …

The Extended Baryonic Halo Of Ngc 3923, Stacy S. Mcgaugh, J. Christopher Mihos
Faculty Scholarship
Galaxy halos and their globular cluster systems build up over time by the accretion of small satellites. We can learn about this process in detail by observing systems with ongoing accretion events and comparing the data with simulations. Elliptical shell galaxies are systems that are thought to be due to ongoing or recent minor mergers. We present preliminary results of an investigation of the baryonic halo-light profile, globular clusters, and shells/streams-of the shell galaxy NGC 3923 from deep Dark Energy Camera (DECam) g and i-band imaging. We present the 2D and radial distributions of the globular cluster candidates out to …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The Advanced LIGO observatories detected gravitational waves from two binary black hole mergers during their first observation run (O1). We present a high-energy neutrino follow-up search for the second gravitational wave event, GW151226, as well as for gravitational wave candidate LVT151012. We find two and four neutrino candidates detected by IceCube, and one and zero detected by Antares, within ±500 s around the respective gravitational wave signals, consistent with the expected background rate. None of these neutrino candidates are found to be directionally coincident with GW151226 or LVT151012. We use nondetection to constrain isotropic-equivalent high-energy neutrino emission from GW151226, adopting …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
During their first observational run, the two Advanced LIGO detectors attained an unprecedented sensitivity, resulting in the first direct detections of gravitational-wave signals produced by stellar-mass binary black hole systems. This paper reports on an all-sky search for gravitational waves (GWs) from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHBs). The combined results from two independent search techniques were used in this study: the first employs a matched-filter algorithm that uses a bank of filters covering the GW signal parameter space, while the second is a generic search for GW transients (bursts). No GWs from IMBHBs were detected; therefore, we constrain …

Milky Way Tomography With K And M Dwarf Stars: The Vertical Structure Of The Galactic Disk, Deborah Ferguson, Susan Gardner, Brian Yanny
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We use the number density distributions of K and M dwarf stars with vertical height from the Galactic disk, determined using observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to probe the structure of the Milky Way disk across the survey's footprint. Using photometric parallax as a distance estimator we analyze a sample of several million disk stars in matching footprints above and below the Galactic plane, and we determine the location and extent of vertical asymmetries in the number counts in a variety of thin- and thick-disk subsamples in regions of some 200 square degrees within 2 kpc in vertical …

The Validity Of 21 Cm Spin Temperature As A Kinetic Temperature Indicator In Atomic And Molecular Gas, Gargi Shaw, Gary J. Ferland, I. Hubeny
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The gas kinetic temperature (TK) of various interstellar environments is often inferred from observations that can deduce level populations of atoms, ions, or molecules using spectral line observations; H I 21 cm is perhaps the most widely used, and has a long history. Usually the H I 21 cm line is assumed to be in thermal equilibrium and the populations are given by the Boltzmann distribution. A variety of processes, many involving Lyα, can affect the 21 cm line. Here we show how this is treated in the spectral simulation code Cloudy, and present numerical …

Photoelectric Magnitude Measurements Of The Lunar Eclipses On May 16, 2003 And Oct. 28, 2004, Richard W. Schmude Jr.
Georgia Journal of Science
The Moon's brightness dropped by 10.73 ± 0.07 and 10.61 ± 0.15 magnitudes during the total lunar eclipses on May 16, 2003 and Oct. 28, 2004 respectively. These magnitude drops are close to the corresponding value for the Jan., 2000 total lunar eclipse and indicate that not much change in the transparency of the atmosphere has occurred in the last 4 years.

Shakespeare, A Supernova, And A Little Green Man Walk Into A Mathematics Classroom, Sheila Kirstin Miller
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Creativity amidst constraints is a hallmark of the STEM researcher. It is precisely what is required to see what has never been seen. It is also at the core of creative mathematics, more commonly called “research”. We in the 21st century tell ourselves that science and story are separate enterprises. One goal of this article is to tell parts of the human story—featuring Shakespeare, Tycho Brahe, visiting stars, Little Green Men, and modern astrophysics—that might erode belief in that duality and illustrate why dissolving the artificial barriers between talents within individuals is to the benefit of ourselves, our students, …

We report the direct virtual photon invariant yields in the transverse momentum ranges 1 < pT < 3 GeV/c and 5 < pT < 10 GeV/c at mid-rapidity derived from the dielectron invariant mass continuum region 0.10 < Mee < 0.28 GeV/c2 for 0–80% minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. A clear excess in the invariant yield compared to the nuclear overlap function TAA scaled p + p reference is observed in the pT range 1 < pT < 3 GeV/c. For pT > 6 GeV/c the production follows TAA scaling. Model calculations with contributions from thermal radiation …

Oxygen Isotope Composition Of Water In Martian Meteorites, Oleg Vitalivich Maltsev
Oxygen Isotope Composition Of Water In Martian Meteorites, Oleg Vitalivich Maltsev
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The oxygen isotope composition of water extracted from Martian meteorites appears not to be in isotopic equilibrium with the silicate portion of the meteorites. This disequilibrium suggests the existence of multiple distinct oxygen isotope reservoirs on planet Mars. Here we present oxygen isotope measurements of waters extracted from Martian shergottites Tissint, Zagami and NWA-7042 and from nakhlite NWA-10153. These waters were extracted by stepwise heating to preserve segregation between low temperature adsorbed waters, intermediate temperature mineral waters and the high temperature mineral structural OH groups. The results of our study, analyzed cooperatively with previous work by Karlsson et al., (1992) …

We use globular cluster kinematics data, primarily from the SAGES Legacy Unifying Globulars and GalaxieS (SLUGGS) survey, to measure the dark matter fraction (fDM) and the average dark matter density (〈ρDM〉) within the inner 5 effective radii (Re) for 32 nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar mass log (M*/M⊙) ranging from 10.1 to 11.8. We compare our results with a simple galaxy model based on scaling relations as well as with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations where the dark matter profile has been modified through various physical processes. We find a high fDM (≥0.6) within 5 Re in most of our sample, …

Using Advanced Psf Subtraction Techniques On Archival Data Of Herbig Ae/Be Stars To Search For New Candidate Companions, Emily Diane Safsten
Theses and Dissertations
Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars are intermediate mass (2-10 solar mass) pre-main sequence stars with circumstellar disks. Observing planets within these young disks would greatly aid in understanding planet formation processes and timescales particularly around massive stars. So far, only one planet, HD 100546 b, has been confirmed to orbit a HAeBe star. With over 250 HAeBe stars known, and several observed to have disks with structures thought to be related to planet formation, it seems likely that there are as yet undiscovered planetary companions within the circumstellar disks of some of these young stars. Direct detection of a low-luminosity companion …

This paper evaluates key functional data parameters that must be considered for suborbital spaceflight participants wearing pressurized suits for intravehicular activity (IVA). Data parameters of an analog spacesuit worn in an analog flight environment were obtained from 40 civilian participants using the Suborbital Space Flight Simulator (SSFS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) while donning Final Frontier Design’s (FFD) fully pressurized third-generation spacesuit as part of their training for Project PoSSUM (the Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere Project). The physiological data collected included: blood pressure, electrocardiograms, heart rate, grip strength, and skin temperature. These parameters were measured using a …

Ionic thermoelectric materials, for example, polyelectrolytes such as polystyrene sulfonate sodium (PSSNa), constitute a new class of materials which are attracting interest because of their large Seebeck coefficient and the possibility that they could be used in ionic thermoelectric SCs (ITESCs) and field effect transistors. However, pure polyelectrolyte membranes are not robust or flexible. In this paper, the preparation of ionic thermoelectric paper using a simple, scalable and cost-effective method is described. After a composite was fabricated with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), the resulting NFC–PSSNa paper is flexible and mechanically robust, which is desirable if it is to be used in …

We describe the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV), a project encompassing three major spectroscopic programs. The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) is observing hundreds of thousands of Milky Way stars at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratios in the near-infrared. The Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey is obtaining spatially resolved spectroscopy for thousands of nearby galaxies (median z ~ 0.03). The extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) is mapping the galaxy, quasar, and neutral gas distributions between z ~ 0.6 and 3.5 to constrain cosmology using baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions, …

The writer made 45 brightness measurements of Saturn + rings between Nov. 28, 2007 and April 24, 2008. The selected B(1,0), V(1,0), R(1,0) and I(1,0) values for Saturn + rings for b = 7° are: -8.10 ± 0.01, -9.14 ± 0.01, -9.77 ± 0.01 and -9.87 ± 0.02 respectively. The selected solar phase angle coefficients (in magnitudes/degree) are: 0.041 ± 0.006, 0.034 ± 0.005, 0.022 ± 0.007 and 0.027 ± 0.007 respectively. It is concluded that the angle between the ring plane and the Sun (B') has as much affect on the results as the angle between the ring plane …
