© 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration have cataloged eleven confidently detected gravitational-wave events during the first two observing runs of the advanced detector era. All eleven events were consistent with being from well-modeled mergers between compact stellar-mass objects: black holes or neutron stars. The data around the time of each of these events have been made publicly available through the gravitational-wave open science center. The entirety of the gravitational-wave strain data from the first and second observing runs have also now been made publicly available. There is considerable interest among the broad scientific …

Expectation Values Of Coherent States For Su(2) Lattice Gauge Theories, Klaus Liegener, Ernst-Albrecht Zwicknagel Feb 2020

Expectation Values Of Coherent States For Su(2) Lattice Gauge Theories, Klaus Liegener, Ernst-Albrecht Zwicknagel

Faculty Publications

This article investigates properties of semiclassical Gauge Field Theory Coherent States for general quantum gauge theories. Useful, e.g., for the canonical formulation of Lattice Gauge Theories these states are labelled by a point in the classical phase space and constructed such that the expectation values of the canonical operators are sharply peaked on said phase space point. For the case of the non-abelian gauge group SU(2), we will explicitly compute the expectation value of general polynomials including the first order quantum corrections. This allows asking more precise questions about the quantum fluctuations of any given semiclassical system.

Effects Of Opacity Temperature Dependence On Radiatively Accelerated Clouds, Sergei Dyda, Daniel Proga, Christopher S. Reynolds Feb 2020

Effects Of Opacity Temperature Dependence On Radiatively Accelerated Clouds, Sergei Dyda, Daniel Proga, Christopher S. Reynolds

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

We study how different opacity–temperature scalings affect the dynamical evolution of irradiated gas clouds using time-dependent radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. When clouds are optically thick, the bright side heats up and expands, accelerating the cloud via the rocket effect. Clouds that become more optically thick as they heat accelerate ∼35 per cent faster than clouds that become optically thin. An enhancement of ∼85 per cent in the acceleration can be achieved by having a broken power-law opacity profile, which allows the evaporating gas driving the cloud to become optically thin and not attenuate the driving radiation flux. We find that up to …

We present the first polarimetric detection of the inner disk component around the pre-main-sequence B9.5 star HD 141569A. Gemini Planet Imager H-band (1.65 μm) polarimetric differential imaging reveals the highest signal-to-noise ratio detection of this ring yet attained and traces structure inward to 0.″25 (28 au at a distance of 111 pc). The radial polarized intensity image shows the east side of the disk, peaking in intensity at 0.″40 (44 au) and extending out to 0.″9 (100 au). There is a spiral arm-like enhancement to the south, reminiscent of the known spiral structures on the outer rings of the disk. …

We present new observations of the planet β Pictoris b from 2018 with the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), the first GPI observations following conjunction. Based on these new measurements, we perform a joint orbit fit to the available relative astrometry from ground-based imaging, the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD), and the Gaia DR2 position, and demonstrate how to incorporate the IAD into direct imaging orbit fits. We find a mass consistent with predictions of hot-start evolutionary models and previous works following similar methods, though with larger uncertainties: 12.8+5.3-3.2 M Jup. Our eccentricity determination of disfavors circular orbits. We consider orbit …

We use data from the GAMA and GALEX surveys to demonstrate that the UV upturn, an unexpected excess of ultraviolet flux from a hot stellar component, seen in the spectra of many early-type galaxies, arises from processes internal to individual galaxies with no measurable influence from the galaxies' larger environment. We first define a clean sample of passive galaxies without a significant contribution to their UV flux from low-level star formation. We confirm that galaxies with the optical colours of red sequence galaxies often have signs of residual star formation, which, without other information, would prevent a convincing demonstration of …

The SABER instrument on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Thermosphere‐Ionosphere‐Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics satellite continues to provide a long‐term record of Earth's stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere. The SABER data are being used to examine long‐term changes and trends in temperature, water vapor, and carbon dioxide. A tacit, central assumption of these analyses is that the SABER instrument radiometric calibration is not changing with time; that is, the instrument is stable. SABER stratospheric temperatures and those derived from Global Positioning System Radio Occultation measurements are compared to examine SABER's stability. Global Positioning System Radio Occultation measurements are inherently stable …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

FU Orionis objects are low-mass pre-main sequence stars characterized by dramatic outbursts several magnitudes in brightness. These outbursts are linked to episodic accretion events in which stars gain a significant portion of their mass. The physical processes behind these accretion events are not yet well understood. The archetypal FU Ori system, FU Orionis, is composed of two young stars with detected gas and dust emission. The continuum emitting regions have not been resolved until now. Here, we present 1.3 mm observations of the FU Ori binary system using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The disks are resolved at 40 mas …

Calibration Transients In Ligo Detectors, Thomas Daniel Abbott Jan 2020

Calibration Transients In Ligo Detectors, Thomas Daniel Abbott

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes a novel method of analyzing fluctuations in the time-dependent calibration models of the LIGO interferometers to estimate their effect on strain reconstruction for gravitational-wave detections. The time-dependence of the calibration model of each detector is tracked with a set of parameters which are continuously measured while the interferometers are operating. These parameters track slow variations in the sensing function of the detectors as well as the actuators that hold the detectors in an operational state. The time-dependent parameter data during the second observation run (O2 [November 30, 2016 16:00 UTC to August 25, 2017 22:00:00 UTC]) and …

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, TESS, is currently carrying out an all-sky search for small planets transiting bright stars. In the first year of the TESS survey, a steady progress was made in achieving the mission’s primary science goal of establishing bulk densities for 50 planets smaller than Neptune. During that year, the TESS’s observations were focused on the southern ecliptic hemisphere, resulting in the discovery of three mini-Neptunes orbiting the star TOI-125, a V = 11.0 K0 dwarf. We present intensive HARPS radial velocity observations, yielding precise mass measurements for TOI-125b, TOI-125c, and TOI-125d. TOI-125b has an orbital period …

We present a method to derive the dynamical mass of face-on galaxy disks using their neutral hydrogen (H i) velocity dispersion (σ H i). We have applied the method to nearby, gas-rich galaxies that have extended H i gas disks and have low inclinations. The galaxy sample includes four large disk galaxies, NGC 628, NGC 6496, NGC 3184, and NGC 4214, and three dwarf galaxies, DDO 46, DDO 63, and DDO 187. We have used archival H i data from The H i Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) and the LITTLE THINGS survey to derive the H i gas distributions and …

Here we present the analysis of multi-epoch secondary eclipse observations of HD 189733b and HD 209458b as a probe of temporal variability in the planetary climate using both Spitzer channels 1 and 2 (3.6 and 4.5 μm). We expect hot-Jupiter atmospheres to be dynamic environments exhibiting time varying weather. However, it is uncertain to what extent temporal variability will be observable when considering disk integrated observations. We do not detect statistically significant variability and are able to place useful upper limits on the infrared variability amplitudes in these atmospheres. There are very few planets with multi-epoch observations at the required …

© 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. GW170817 is the very first observation of gravitational waves originating from the coalescence of two compact objects in the mass range of neutron stars, accompanied by electromagnetic counterparts, and offers an opportunity to directly probe the internal structure of neutron stars. We perform Bayesian model selection on a wide range of theoretical predictions for the neutron star equation of state. For the binary neutron star hypothesis, we find that we cannot rule out the majority of theoretical models considered. In addition, the gravitational-wave data alone does not rule out the possibility that one or both …

While we completely understood that a binary dwarf companion of the Sun has not been accepted by majority of astronomers, allow us to present some new arguments, along with our own serendipitous encounter with such a binary companion of the Sun. We hope that the present note will be found useful for further investigations, in relation to Planet Nine and such a dwarf star companion of the Sun (sometimes dubbed as Nemesis). Nonetheless, this article is not an exhaustive review of such dwarf companion star theories.

We model the circumstellar disk of δ Sco using the 3-dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code HDUST in order to quantify the large scale changes in the disk through the years 2000 to 2018, and to see if these changes can be attributed to the secondary star affecting the disk throughout its orbit. We determine our best-fitting models through matching simulated observations to actual Hα spectroscopy and V-band photometric observations. Our modelling results confirm previous findings that the disk of δ Sco was forming early in the century. We also find a period of disk dissipation when the companion is …

Stellar Nucleosynthesis: Direct Measurement Of The Neutron-Capture Cross Sections Of Stable Germanium Isotopes And Design Of A Next Generation Ion Trap For The Study Of Beta-Delayed Neutron Emission, Alexander Laminack

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Knowledge of stellar nuclear reaction rates is critical to understanding the cosmic origins of the abundances of elements. In order to determine these reaction rates, accurate measurements of nuclear cross sections are needed. This thesis presents the results of an experiment to directly measure the neutron capture cross sections of 70-Ge, 72-Ge, 74-Ge, and 76-Ge. These measurements were performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science CEnter (LANSCE) using the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE). This is the first direct measurement for many of these isotopes across the neutron energy spectrum of 10 eV to 1 MeV using the …

With a selected sample of neutron star (NS) equations of state (EOSs) that are consistent with the current observations and have a range of maximum masses, we investigate the relations between NS gravitational mass Mg and baryonic mass Mb, and the relations between the maximum NS mass supported through uniform rotation (Mmax) and that of nonrotating NSs (MTOV). We find that for an EOS-independent quadratic, universal transformation formula (Mb=Mg+A×M2g)(Mb=Mg+A×Mg2), the best-fit A value is 0.080 for non-rotating NSs, 0.064 for maximally rotating NSs, and 0.073 when NSs with arbitrary rotation are considered. The residual error of the transformation is ∼ …

Reflection And Reverberation In Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries, Benjamin Coughenour Jan 2020

Reflection And Reverberation In Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries, Benjamin Coughenour

Wayne State University Dissertations

Neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS LMXBs) are systems which consist of a NS and a low-mass companion star. They are naturally variable on a variety of timescales, and are even classified by their X-ray spectral variability on the timescales of hours to days. The most luminous NS LMXB sources are known as ‘Z’ sources, because they trace out a characteristic ‘Z’ shape when plotted on a color-color or hardness-intensity diagram. The physical mechanisms causing this variability are not well understood. To try to address this, we model spectra taken from different positions on a hardness-intensity diagram of two Z …

A Spectropolarimetric Study Of Southern Wr + O Binaries, Andrew G. Fullard Jan 2020

A Spectropolarimetric Study Of Southern Wr + O Binaries, Andrew G. Fullard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The classical Wolf-Rayet (WR) state is the evolved stage of a massive star, post main-sequence. They are characterized by their strong emission line spectra and stellar winds that are often more than 10 times denser than that of their progenitor O-type stars, which have mass loss rates of 10-6 MΘyr-1. The evolution of WR stars and their connection to specific types of supernovae (SNe) is an open question. Current theory suggests that rapidly rotating massive stars may be the progenitors of SNe that produce long-duration gamma-ray bursts. The interaction between WR stars and their companion …

Using Mesa To Test Our Theory Of Contact Binary Star Evolution, Lauren Henderson, Anneke Avery, Gia Mien Le, Larry A. Molnar

Summer Research

A contact binary star system consists of two stars orbiting each other so closely that they share a common atmosphere (Figure 1). Nearly 1% of stars like our sun are contact binaries, yet there is not a comprehensive model of their lives. Our goal is to understand the formation, life, and explosive demise of these objects. This summer we used MESA, a stellar modeling program, paired with a Python program to model the lives of contact binary stars.

Gaia16aye was a binary microlensing event discovered in the direction towards the northern Galactic disc and was one of the first microlensing events detected and alerted to by the Gaia space mission. Its light curve exhibited five distinct brightening episodes, reaching up to I = 12 mag, and it was covered in great detail with almost 25 000 data points gathered by a network of telescopes. We present the photometric and spectroscopic follow-up covering 500 days of the event evolution. We employed a full Keplerian binary orbit microlensing model combined with the motion of Earth and Gaia around the Sun …

We report the discovery of the 1.008-d, ultrashort period (USP) super-Earth HD 213885b (TOI-141b) orbiting the bright (V = 7.9) star HD 213885 (TOI-141, TIC 403224672), detected using photometry from the recently launched TESS mission. Using FEROS, HARPS, and CORALIE radial velocities, we measure a precise mass of 8.8 ± 0.6 M⊕ for this 1.74 ± 0.05 R⊕ exoplanet, which provides enough information to constrain its bulk composition – similar to Earth’s but enriched in iron. The radius, mass, and stellar irradiation of HD 213885b are, given our data, very similar to 55 Cancri e, making this exoplanet a good …

Lambert W Function Methods In Double Square Well And Waveguide Problems, Narola Harsh Bharatbhai, P C Deshmukh, Robert B. Scott, Ken Roberts, Sree Ram Valluri

Physics and Astronomy Publications

Using methods related to the Lambert W function, we present solutions of two apparently different problems: (1) The one-dimensional double square well potential in quantum mechanics and (2) The transverse electric and magnetic modes for a step-index electromagnetic waveguide. The solution techniques provide insight into the bound energy states for the single and double square well problems and the allowed modes of propagation in a waveguide with varying refractive indices. The solutions can be viewed in either of two related complex plane representations. Comparison of the solution geometries suggests that interesting applications may be possible in nanostructures and devices which …

A Numerical Approach To Modeling Submoons And Investigating Stability Regions, Josephine Spiegelberg

Honors Program Theses

The recent discovery of the Neptune-sized exomoon candidate Kepler-1625bi (Teachey et al. 2018) has prompted a wave of research into the possibility of such a large satellite hosting its own moons, or submoons. These submoons have a lot in common with moons, and lessons from moon stability calculations can help to understand submoon behavior and stability. Past submoon research has focused on determining stability regions for these submoons using simplified models of the body’s tidal evolution (Reid 1973, Conrad 1985, Kollmeier and Raymond 2019). In order to provide a more detailed understanding of submoon behavior, a Fortran N-Body code was …
