Anomalous Dimensions From Yukawa Couplings In Smneft: Four-Fermion Operators, Alakabha Datta, Jacky Kumar, Hongkai Liu, Danny Marfatia

Faculty and Student Publications

The Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with right-handed neutrinos. Building on our previous work, arXiv:2010.12109, we calculate the Yukawa coupling contributions to the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the 11 dimension-six four-fermion SMNEFT operators. We also present the new contributions to the anomalous dimension matrix for the 14 four-fermion SMEFT operators that mix with the SMNEFT operators through the Yukawa couplings of the right-handed neutrinos.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We present a uniform analysis of six examples of embedded wind shock (EWS) O star X-ray sources observed at high resolution with the Chandra grating spectrometers. By modelling both the hot plasma emission and the continuum absorption of the soft X-rays by the cool, partially ionized bulk of the wind we derive the temperature distribution of the shock-heated plasma and the wind mass-loss rate of each star. We find a similar temperature distribution for each star’s hot wind plasma, consistent with a power-law differential emission measure, dlogEMdlogT, with a slope a little steeper than −2, up to temperatures of only …

The Sdss-Rm Project: Uv/Optical Accretion Disk Measurements For Supermassive Black Holes With Hubble Space Telescope, Megan Sturm May 2021

The Sdss-Rm Project: Uv/Optical Accretion Disk Measurements For Supermassive Black Holes With Hubble Space Telescope, Megan Sturm

University Scholar Projects

We report accretion-disk structure measurements for eight rapidly accreting supermassive black holes selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project sample. Reverberation mapping uses light echoes to measure disk size from the time lag between variability in the inner/hotter and outer/cooler disk emission. We use Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet observations coordinated with optical monitoring from the Liverpool Telescope and Las Cumbres Observatory. We find ten significant UV/optical lags for five out of the eight total targets. Through these time lags, we study the accretion disk as a function of disk size, temperature profile and radiative efficiency. We find …

Distant Stars Become Future Homes: The Close Relationship Of Interstellar Between Hard Science-Fiction And Spectacle, Gabriel Davis May 2021

Distant Stars Become Future Homes: The Close Relationship Of Interstellar Between Hard Science-Fiction And Spectacle, Gabriel Davis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hard Science-fiction shares a close relationship with the element of spectacle. This is especially apparent in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014), a film based in realistic science and emotional appeal. Nolan makes use of creating a team comprised of creative minds with different backgrounds. This includes theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, co-writer Jonathan Nolan, and composer Hans Zimmer. Together, the four develop a film that focuses on three main facets of science: time dilation, black holes, and dimensions. Incorporating these elements based in the historical world gives Interstellar its classification as hard science-fiction, a genre based more solidly in realistic science than …

We present the systematic spectral analyses of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor during its first ten years of operation. This catalog contains two types of spectra: time-integrated spectral fits and spectral fits at the brightest time bin, from 2297 GRBs, resulting in a compendium of over 18,000 spectra. The four different spectral models used for fitting the spectra were selected based on their empirical importance to the shape of many GRBs. We describe in detail our procedure and criteria for the analyses, and present the bulk results in the form of parameter distributions both in …

Systematical Uncertainties In The Measurement Of A Gamma-Ray Burst’S Isotropic Equivalent Energy, Kimberly Zoldak May 2021

Systematical Uncertainties In The Measurement Of A Gamma-Ray Burst’S Isotropic Equivalent Energy, Kimberly Zoldak

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic and luminous explosions in the Universe since the Big Bang, enabling them to be observed out to extremely large redshifts (z~9). Consequently, this makes them a promising cosmological standard candle candidate. Unfortunately, however, they have proven to be quite challenging to standardize. The GRB community has worked tirelessly at this task, and to date, has put forth several luminosity-distance relations, some more propitious than others. The most prevailing problem with these relations is in their sizable amount of scatter, likely due to measurement inconsistencies and errors in the variables they employ. This arises …

Image Analysis Of Charged Bimodal Colloidal Systems In Microgravity., Adam J. Cecil May 2021

Image Analysis Of Charged Bimodal Colloidal Systems In Microgravity., Adam J. Cecil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colloids are suspensions of two or more phases and have been topics of research for advanced, tunable materials for decades. Stabilization of colloids is typically attributed to thermodynamic mechanisms; however, recent studies have identified transport or entropic mechanisms that can potentially stabilize a thermodynamically unstable colloidal system. In this study, suspensions of silsesquioxane microparticles and zirconia nanoparticles were dispersed in a nitric acid solution and allowed to aggregate for 8-12 days in microgravity aboard the International Space Station. The suspensions were subsequently imaged periodically at 2.5x magnification. Due to the inadequacy of existing image analysis programs, the python package “Colloidspy” …

Absolute Power Measurements For Advanced Ligo Photon Calibrator, Francisco Llamas Villarreal May 2021

Absolute Power Measurements For Advanced Ligo Photon Calibrator, Francisco Llamas Villarreal

Theses and Dissertations

Since its first detection in 2015, the Light Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory has been notably recognized for the successful measurement of gravitational waves. The successful detection of gravitational-waves comes from the effort of more than a thousand scientist working in collaboration. To characterize the change in displacement of the ETMs, LIGO uses several methods of calibration. The Photon Calibrator has gained significance to the point of becoming the primary calibration tool for the Advanced LIGO detectors. Relying on photon radiation pressure to calibrate the interferometer, the photon calibrator measures the change in displacement of the ETM in relation to the power …

Enhanced Detection Efficiencies And Reduced False Alarms In Searching For Gravitational Waves From Core Collapse Supernovae, Gaukhar Nurbek May 2021

Enhanced Detection Efficiencies And Reduced False Alarms In Searching For Gravitational Waves From Core Collapse Supernovae, Gaukhar Nurbek

Theses and Dissertations

A supernova is a star that flares up very suddenly and then slowly returns to its former luminosity or, explodes violently with energy $10^{52}$ erg. There are stars which are 10 times or more massive than the Sun, which usually end their lives going supernova. When there is no longer enough fuel for the fusion process in the core of the star and inward gravitational pull of the star’s great mass takes place, the star starts to explode. A series of nuclear reactions starts taking place after the star begins shrinking due to gravity. In the final phase of this …

Discovering Kepler’S Third Law From Planetary Data, Boyan Kostadinov, Satyanand Singh May 2021

Discovering Kepler’S Third Law From Planetary Data, Boyan Kostadinov, Satyanand Singh

Publications and Research

In this data-inspired project, we illustrate how Kepler’s Third Law of Planetary Motion can be discovered from fitting a power model to real planetary data obtained from NASA, using regression modeling. The power model can be linearized, thus we can use linear regression to fit the model parameters to the data, but we also show how a non-linear regression can be implemented, using the R programming language. Our work also illustrates how the linear least squares used for fitting the power model can be implemented in Desmos, which could serve as the computational foundation for this project at a lower …

Timing Properties Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Evan Arnold Smith May 2021

Timing Properties Of Active Galactic Nuclei, Evan Arnold Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Timing properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are investigated primarily using archival data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite collected between 1996 and 2011. The main emphasis is to search for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). This search was motivated by the uniqueness of the RXTE AGN database, which contains a gold-mine of information on the long-term light curves of AGN, as well as the fact that QPOs are a common feature in the light curves of stellar mass black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) X-ray Binaries (XRBs).In stellar mass systems, QPOs have been used as strong diagnostics about …

Variable Nature Of Accretion Disk Outflows Around Supermassive Black Holes In Active Galaxies, Mary Ogborn May 2021

Variable Nature Of Accretion Disk Outflows Around Supermassive Black Holes In Active Galaxies, Mary Ogborn

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Seyfert galaxies are a sub-class of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in which outflows are ubiquitously observed and thought to be produced from accretion disks surrounding supermassive black holes (SMBHs). These outflows manifest themselves as blueshifted absorption features in their X-Ray spectra (aka. warm absorbers (WAs)), allowing for spectroscopic analysis to examine the physical conditions of the constituent plasma as well as the AGN itself. In the context of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), we utilize a magnetically-driven disk-wind model that describes the behavior within the disk and to study 3 exemplary Seyfert 1 AGNs in an effort to constrain the strength of the …

Spectroscopic Analysis Of Potential Astromolecules Via Quantum Chemical Quartic Force Fields, Mason Gardner May 2021

Spectroscopic Analysis Of Potential Astromolecules Via Quantum Chemical Quartic Force Fields, Mason Gardner

Honors Theses

Astrochemistry has been substantially aided by computational techniques, particularly through the use of Quartic Force Field (QFF) analysis. Several methods have proven useful at correlating computed spectroscopic data with experimental observations. The F12-TZ QFF correlated well with experimental data for silicon oxide compounds, particularly those potentially involved in development from rocky bodies to planetary masses [27]. Compared to argon matrix experimental data, the vibrational frequencies for the molecules SiO2, SiO3, Si2O3, and Si2O4 become less accurate as the complexity of the molecules increases but should still be predictive of infrared characteristics of silicon oxides as they form clusters in space …

Automated Identification Of Lines In Data From Gravitational Wave Detectors, Thomas A. Cruz May 2021

Automated Identification Of Lines In Data From Gravitational Wave Detectors, Thomas A. Cruz

Theses and Dissertations

On the frontier of gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, the LIGO detectors record vast quantities of data that need to be analyzed constantly for rare and transient GW signals. A foundational problem in LIGO data analysis is the identification of spectral line features in the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the data. Such line features correspond to high power terrestrial or instrumental signals that must be removed from the data before any search for GW signals can take place. In this study the method developed aims to automate the extraction of the frequencies and bandwidths of the lines, treated as sharp …

Point Absorbers In Advanced Ligo, Aidan F. Brooks, Gabriele Vajente, Hiro Yamamoto, R. Abbott, C. Adams, R. Adhikari, A. Ananyeva, S. Appert, K. Arai, Karla E. Ramirez

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Small, highly absorbing points are randomly present on the surfaces of the main interferometer optics in Advanced LIGO. The resulting nanometer scale thermo-elastic deformations and substrate lenses from these micronscale absorbers significantly reduce the sensitivity of the interferometer directly though a reduction in the power-recycling gain and indirect interactions with the feedback control system. We review the expected surface deformation from point absorbers and provide a pedagogical description of the impact on power buildup in second generation gravitational wave detectors (dual-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers). This analysis predicts that the power-dependent reduction in interferometer performance will significantly degrade maximum stored power …

Testing Spiral Density-Wave Theory In Disk Galaxies Using Multi-Wavelength Image Data, Star Formation History Maps And Spatially Resolved Stellar Clusters, Mohamed Shameer Abdeen May 2021

Testing Spiral Density-Wave Theory In Disk Galaxies Using Multi-Wavelength Image Data, Star Formation History Maps And Spatially Resolved Stellar Clusters, Mohamed Shameer Abdeen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Studying galaxy structures using different wavebands enables us to observe a varietyof intrinsic galactic features and to test the validity of underlying theories in detail. Density wave theory, originally proposed by C.C. Lin and F. Shu (Lin & Shu 1964), explains the nature of the spiral arm patterns in disk galaxies as density waves that propagate through the galactic disk. From spiral galaxies to the rings of Saturn, density wave theory has had success in providing qualitative explanations of disk dynamics. However, it is now widely believed that galactic disks are dissipative systems which raises the question of whether they …

Orbital Dynamics And Stability Of Circumbinary Planetary Systems And Small Bodies In The Solar System, Cheng Chen May 2021

Orbital Dynamics And Stability Of Circumbinary Planetary Systems And Small Bodies In The Solar System, Cheng Chen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

My main research focuses on the dynamics and stability of circumbinary planetary systems and of small bodies in the solar system. Unlike the two-body problem, the three-body problem is more complex as there are stronger interactions with two massive bodies in the system. In the outer solar system, the apsidal precession secular resonance with Neptune makes comets in the Kuiper belt unstable in the early stages of the solar system. This resonance a likely origin for the nitrogen-delivering comets that impacted the Earth bringing some of the nitrogen in the Earth’s atmosphere today. Beyond the solar system, we have observed …

Accretion And Debris Disc Dynamics Around Single And Higher-Order Star Systems, Jeremy L. Smallwood May 2021

Accretion And Debris Disc Dynamics Around Single And Higher-Order Star Systems, Jeremy L. Smallwood

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

My research deals with highly topical areas of astrophysics, such as planet habitability, stellar evolution, the origin of fast radio bursts, the evolution of debris discs, and the dynamics of accretion discs in binary and higher-order star systems. Accretion discs around binary star systems are ubiquitous in the galaxy and planet formation is thought to occur within these discs. Circumbinary discs are commonly observed to be misaligned with respect to the binary orbital plane. A misaligned circumbinary disc eventually evolve to a stable orientation, either coplanar or polar with the binary orbital plane. The process of disc alignment has important …

Snore: An Intuitive Algorithm For Accurately Simulating N-Body Orbits, Connor L. Nance Apr 2021

Snore: An Intuitive Algorithm For Accurately Simulating N-Body Orbits, Connor L. Nance

Honors College Theses

We present SnOrE (Simple n-body Orbital Engine), a Python package which aims to simulate n-body orbital systems while simultaneously overcoming early educational barriers of computational astrodynamics for undergraduate physics students. SnOrE exploits rudimentary syntax and commonly-understood Python libraries to accurately simulate orbits of systems, given initial position and momentum conditions of each body in the system. As the n-body problem is as of yet unsolvable theoretically for n ≥ 3, having a numerical perspective on complicated orbits is of great importance to potentially understanding the processes of star and planet formation. Especially significant examples of this research …

Gresh, Matt Grau, Kevin C. Cossel, Kia Boon Ng, Yuval Shagam, Yan Zhou, Victor V. Flambaum, Konrad W. Lehnert, Jun Ye, Eric A. Cornell

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

We use our recent electric dipole moment (EDM) measurement data to constrain the possibility that the HfF+ EDM oscillates in time due to interactions with candidate dark matter axionlike particles (ALPs). We employ a Bayesian analysis method which accounts for both the look-elsewhere effect and the uncertainties associated with stochastic density fluctuations in the ALP field. We find no evidence of an oscillating EDM over a range spanning from 27 nHz to 400 mHz, and we use this result to constrain the ALP-gluon coupling over the mass range 10-22-10-15 eV. This is the first laboratory constraint on the ALP-gluon coupling …

On The Role Of Resonances In Polluting White Dwarfs By Asteroids, Jeremy L. Smallwood, Rebecca G. Martin, Mario Livio, Dimitri Veras

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

Pollution of white dwarf atmospheres may be caused by asteroids that originate from the locations of secular and mean-motion resonances in planetary systems. Asteroids in these locations experience increased eccentricity, leading to tidal disruption by the white dwarf. We examine how the ν6 secular resonance shifts outwards into a previously stable region of the asteroid belt, as the star evolves to a white dwarf. Analytic secular models require a planet to be engulfed in order to shift the resonance. We show with numerical simulations that as a planet gets engulfed by the evolving star, the secular resonance shifts and the …

382— Wiyn Open Cluster Study: Ubvri Photometry Of Ngc 2204, Kylie Snyder, Dante Scarazzini

GREAT Day Posters

The purpose of this project was to study the open star cluster NGC2204 using images taken at Kitt Peak National Observatory using the WIYN 0.9m telescope. These images were analyzed photometrically with the intention of determining the reddening, metallicity, age, and distance modulus of the star cluster. Each image was analyzed using software that determined the point spread function and applied that function to determine the magnitude of each star in that image. These magnitudes were taken for each filter, UBVRI, and then combined and averaged to create a single catalog. Standard stars, taken on the same night, were used …

029— Calculating Gravitational Waves In A Black Hole Binary System, Nami Nishimura Apr 2021

029— Calculating Gravitational Waves In A Black Hole Binary System, Nami Nishimura

GREAT Day Posters

Our ultimate goal is to compute the gravitational waves in an extreme mass-ratio binary system. Since gravitational perturbations are difficult to calculate, we model the compact object as a point carrying a scalar charge q and moving around a spinning black holes.

In this project, we take advantage of symmetry under rotation around the spin axis in order to separate φ variables and leverage the periodicity of the source to separate t variable with a Fourier series. The remaining differential equations will be solved numerically with an appropriate discretization considering a grid of points in r-θ plane

287— The X-Ray Afterglows Of Short Gamma-Ray Bursts, Sarah Popp

GREAT Day Posters

Light curves of the X-ray afterglow from 81 short gamma-ray bursts, from 2005 to 2018, were obtained from the Swift/XRT catalog. The light curves were fit with single power-law and double-power law models using the emcee library in Python and sorted into three groups: bursts well fit by a single power-law, bursts well fit by a double power-law, and bursts not well fit by either. Filters were applied to each category to identify bursts with a steep decay or a plateau. Once these unusual bursts were identified, their properties (duration, flux, fluence, and hardness) were compared to those of the …

Spectral Singularities With Directional Sensitivity, Hamidreza Ramezani Apr 2021

Spectral Singularities With Directional Sensitivity, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We propose a class of spectral singularities that are sensitive to the direction of excitation and arise in nonlinear systems with broken parity symmetry. These spectral singularities are sensitive to the direction of the incident beam and result in diverging transmission and reflection for the left (right) incident, while the transmission and reflection of the right (left) side of the system remain finite. For the pedagogical reason, first we review the scattering formalism in nonlinear systems using an abstract δ-function model. Then, using a parity symmetry broken nonlinear system consisting of two δ functions, one linear and the other nonlinear, …

Fitting An Analytic Magnetic Field To A Prestellar Core, Gianfranco Bino, Shantanu Basu Apr 2021

Fitting An Analytic Magnetic Field To A Prestellar Core, Gianfranco Bino, Shantanu Basu

Physics and Astronomy Publications

We deploy and demonstrate the capabilities of the magnetic field model developed by Ewertowski & Basu by fitting observed polarimetry data of the prestellar core FeSt 1-457. The analytic hourglass magnetic field function derived directly from Maxwell's equations yields a central-to-surface magnetic field strength ratio in the equatorial plane, as well as magnetic field directions with relative magnitudes throughout the core. This fit emerges from a comparison of a single plane of the model with the polarization map that results from the integrated properties of the magnetic field and dust throughout the core. Importantly, our fit is independent of any …

Groups Of Narrow Bipolar Events Within Thunderstorms, Sampath Bandara, Thomas Marshall, Sumedhe Karunarathne, Maribeth Stolzenburg

Faculty and Student Publications

This investigation is focused on groups of Narrow Bipolar Events (NBEs), defined as NBEs that occurred within 10 km horizontally and ±660 ms of a located, large-amplitude NBE from a dataset of positive NBEs that occurred in Mississippi thunderstorms. In two months only 15 groups were found, with a total of 31 positive and 4 negative NBEs. Each group had 2 to 5 NBEs; four groups had both positive and negative polarity NBEs. About half of the NBEs had typical values for range-normalized fast antenna (FA) electric field change magnitudes (4–15 V/m) and typical VHF powers (1000–45,000 W), but 17 …
