Elastic scattering of photons from 12C has been investigated using quasimonoenergetic tagged photons with energies in the range 65–115 MeV at laboratory angles of 60∘, 120∘, and 150∘ at the Tagged-Photon Facility at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. A phenomenological model was employed to provide an estimate of the sensitivity of the 12C(γ,γ)12C cross section to the bound-nucleon polarizabilities.

Revealing Interaction Of Organic Adsorbates With Semiconductor Surfaces Using Chemically Enhanced Raman, Andrew K. Kuhlman, Alexey T. Zayak

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is frequently associated with "chemical enhancement" (CE), which is an effect of the chemical coupling between reporting molecules and surfaces. While SERS technique is mainly attributed to the studies of metallic surfaces, chemical coupling must be present on semiconductor surfaces as well. Here, we examine binding of trans-1,2-two(4-pyridyl) ethylene (BPE) to various crystallographic facets of PbSe semiconductor. The calculated off-resonant Raman spectra vary significantly on different crystallographic facets of PbSe, correlating with the electronic structure of each type of semiconductor surface. We distinguish situations when the charge transfer is present and when it is not, …

Secular Damping Of Stellar Bars In Spinning Dark Matter Halos, Stacy Long, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller Feb 2014

Secular Damping Of Stellar Bars In Spinning Dark Matter Halos, Stacy Long, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We demonstrate using numerical simulations of isolated galaxies that growth of stellar bars in spinning dark matter halos is heavily suppressed in the secular phase of evolution. In a representative set of models, we show that for values of the cosmological spin parameter λ ≳ 0.03, bar growth (in strength and size) becomes increasingly quenched. Furthermore, the slowdown of the bar pattern speed weakens considerably with increasing λ until it ceases completely. The terminal structure of the bars is affected as well, including extent and shape of their boxy/peanut bulges. The essence of this effect lies in the modified angular …

The reaction mechanisms of the two-neutron transfer reaction 12C(6He,4He) have been studied at Elab=30 MeV at the TRIUMF ISAC-II facility using the Silicon Highly-segmented Array for Reactions and Coulex (SHARC) charged-particle detector array. Optical potential parameters have been extracted from the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution. The new potential has been applied to the study of the transfer angular distribution to the 2+2 8.32 MeV state in 14C, using a realistic three-body 6He model and advanced shell-model calculations for the carbon structure, allowing to calculate the relative contributions …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have used a combination of resonant magnetic x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the properties of the doped spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2Ir1−xRhxO4 (0.07 ≤ x ≤ 0.70). We show that Sr2Ir1−xRhxO4 represents a unique model system for the study of dilute magnetism in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, and provide evidence of a doping-induced change in magnetic structure and a suppression of magnetic order at xc ∼ 0.17. We demonstrate that Rh-doping introduces Rh3+/Ir5+ ions which …

Novel Magnetism Of Ir5+(5D4) Ions In The Double Perovskite Sr2Yiro6, Gang Cao, Tongfei Qi, Li Li, Jsaminka Terzic, Shujuan Yuan, Lance E. De Long, Ganpathy Murthy, Ribhu K. Kaul Feb 2014

Novel Magnetism Of Ir5+(5D4) Ions In The Double Perovskite Sr2Yiro6, Gang Cao, Tongfei Qi, Li Li, Jsaminka Terzic, Shujuan Yuan, Lance E. De Long, Ganpathy Murthy, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We synthesize and study single crystals of a new double-perovskite Sr2YIrO6. Despite two strongly unfavorable conditions for magnetic order, namely, pentavalent Ir5+(5d4) ions which are anticipated to have Jeff=0 singlet ground states in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit and geometric frustration in a face-centered cubic structure formed by the Ir5+ ions, we observe this iridate to undergo a novel magnetic transition at temperatures below 1.3 K. We provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence that the origin of magnetism is in an unusual interplay between strong noncubic crystal …

Light-By-Light Scattering Nonlogarithmic Corrections To Hyperfine Splitting In Muonium, Michael I. Eides, Valery A. Shelyuto Jan 2014

Light-By-Light Scattering Nonlogarithmic Corrections To Hyperfine Splitting In Muonium, Michael I. Eides, Valery A. Shelyuto

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We consider three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant set of diagrams with a virtual light-by-light scattering block. These diagrams produce both recoil and nonrecoil contributions to hyperfine splitting. Recoil corrections are enhanced by large logarithms of the muon-electron mass ratio. Both nonrecoil and logarithmically enhanced radiative-recoil corrections were calculated some time ago. Here we calculate nonlogarithmic radiative-recoil corrections generated by the insertions of the light-by-light scattering block.

We report the beam energy(√8NN = 7.7-200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4<ρτ<0.8  GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the quantum chromodynamic phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσ and κσ2, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense …

Interpreting The Ionization Sequence In Agn Emission-Line Spectra, Chris T. Richardson, James T. Allen, Jack A. Baldwin, Paul C. Hewett, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We investigate the physical cause of the great range in the ionization level seen in the spectra of narrow-lined active galactic nuclei (AGN). We used a recently developed technique called mean field independent component analysis to identify examples of individual Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies whose spectra are not dominated by emission due to star formation (SF), which we therefore designate as AGN. We assembled high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) composite spectra of a sequence of these AGN defined by the ionization level of their narrow-line regions (NLR), and extending down to very low ionization cases. We then used a local …

The differential cross section and spin asymmetries for neutral pions produced within the intermediate pseudorapidity range 0.8<ηpT/c and is found to agree with a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL is measured in the same pseudorapidity range and spans a range of Bjorken-x down to x≈0.01. The measured ALL is consistent with model predictions for varying degrees of gluon polarization. The parity-violating asymmetry AL is also measured and found to be consistent with zero. The transverse single-spin asymmetry AN is measured over a previously unexplored kinematic range in …

Energy Dependence Of The (E,2E) Recoil Peak To Binary Peak Ratio Across He (2P2)1D And (2S2P)1P Autoionizing Levels, B. A. Deharak, K. Bartschat, Nicholas L. S. Martin Jan 2014

Energy Dependence Of The (E,2E) Recoil Peak To Binary Peak Ratio Across He (2P2)1D And (2S2P)1P Autoionizing Levels, B. A. Deharak, K. Bartschat, Nicholas L. S. Martin

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The (e,2e) recoil peak to binary peak ratio as a function of the ejected-electron energy is reported for helium autoionizing levels (2p2)1D and (2s2p)1P. A special out-of-plane geometry is used where the ejected electrons are detected in a plane that includes the momentum transfer axis but is perpendicular to the scattering plane. The measured recoil peak to binary peak ratio is a dimensionless quantity that can be directly compared with calculations. A second-order model in the projectile-target interaction correctly reproduces the observed energy dependence …

A Transition Mass For Black Holes To Show Broad Emission Lines, Susmita Chakravorty, Martin Elvis, Gary J. Ferland Jan 2014

A Transition Mass For Black Holes To Show Broad Emission Lines, Susmita Chakravorty, Martin Elvis, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Although the supermassive (AGN) and stellar mass (BHBs) black holes have many properties in common, the broad emission lines (BELs) are exclusively signatures of the active galactic nuclei (AGN). Based on the detection of these lines from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data bases, there seems to be no AGN with mass MBH ≲ 105 M⊙. In this paper, we investigate if such low-mass black holes are really non-existent or they are undetected because the BELs in them are not produced efficiently. Using the ionizing spectral energy distribution for a wide range of black hole mass, …

We present multifrequency observations of the radio galaxy Hydra-A (3C218) located in the core of a massive, X-ray luminous galaxy cluster. Integral field unit spectroscopy is used to trace the kinematics of the ionized and warm molecular hydrogen which are consistent with an ∼5 kpc rotating disc. Broad, double-peaked lines of CO(2–1), [C II] 157 μm and [O I] 63 μm are detected. We estimate the mass of the cold gas within the disc to be Mgas = 2.3 ± 0.3 × 109 M⊙. These observations demonstrate that the complex line profiles found in the cold …

Molecular Hydrogen Regulated Star Formation In Cosmological Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations, Robert Thompson, Kentaro Nagamine, Jason Jaacks, Jun-Hwan Choi

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Some observations have shown that star formation (SF) correlates tightly with the presence of molecular hydrogen (H2); therefore, it is important to investigate its implication on galaxy formation in a cosmological context. In the present work, we implement a sub-grid model (hereafter H2-SF model) that tracks the H2 mass fraction within our cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics code GADGET-3 by using an equilibrium analytic model of Krumholz et al. This model allows us to regulate the SF in our simulation by the local abundance of H2 rather than the total cold gas density, which naturally …

Absorption-line spectroscopy is a powerful tool used to estimate element abundances in both the nearby and distant universe. The accuracy of the abundances thus derived is naturally limited by the accuracy of the atomic data assumed for the spectral lines. We have recently started a project to perform new extensive atomic data calculations used for optical/UV spectral lines in the plasma modeling code Cloudy using state of the art quantal calculations. Here, we demonstrate our approach by focussing on S II, an ion used to estimate metallicities for Milky Way interstellar clouds as well as distant damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) and …

We use GOODS and CANDELS images to identify progenitors of massive (M > 1010 M ☉) compact early-type galaxies (ETGs) at z ~ 1.6. Because merging and accretion increase the size of the stellar component of galaxies, if the progenitors are among known star-forming galaxies, these must be compact themselves. We select candidate progenitors among compact Lyman-break galaxies at z ~ 3 on the basis of their mass, star-formation rate (SFR), and central stellar density, and we find that these account for a large fraction of, and possibly all, compact ETGs at z ~ 1.6. We find that …

Effects Of External Radiation Fields On Line Emission—Application To Star-Forming Regions, Marios Chatzikos, Gary J. Ferland, R. J. R. Williams, Ryan Porter, P. A. M. Vanhoof

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A variety of astronomical environments contain clouds irradiated by a combination of isotropic and beamed radiation fields. For example, molecular clouds may be irradiated by the isotropic cosmic microwave background, as well as by a nearby active galactic nucleus. These radiation fields excite atoms and molecules and produce emission in different ways. We revisit the escape probability theorem and derive a novel expression that accounts for the presence of external radiation fields. We show that when the field is isotropic the escape probability is reduced relative to that in the absence of external radiation. This is in agreement with previous …

Detecting The Rapidly Expanding Outer Shell Of The Crab Nebula: Where To Look, Xiang Wang, Gary J. Ferland, J. A. Baldwin, E. D. Loh, C. T. Richardson

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a range of steady-state photoionization simulations, corresponding to different assumed shell geometries and compositions, of the unseen postulated rapidly expanding outer shell to the Crab Nebula. The properties of the shell are constrained by the mass that must lie within it, and by limits to the intensities of hydrogen recombination lines. In all cases the photoionization models predict very strong emissions from high ionization lines that will not be emitted by the Crab's filaments, alleviating problems with detecting these lines in the presence of light scattered from brighter parts of the Crab. The near-NIR [Ne VI] λ7.652 μ …

We use numerical simulations to explore whether direct collapse can lead to the formation of supermassive black hole (SMBH) seeds at high redshifts. Using the adaptive mesh refinement code ENZO, we follow the evolution of gas within slowly tumbling dark matter (DM) halos of Mvir ~ 2 × 108 M☉ and Rvir ~ 1 kpc. For our idealized simulations, we adopt cosmologically motivated DM and baryon density profiles and angular momentum distributions. Our principal goal is to understand how the collapsing flow overcomes the centrifugal barrier and whether it is subject to fragmentation which can potentially …

Long-Term Spectral Evolution Of Tidal Disruption Candidates Selected By Strong Coronal Lines, Chen-Wei Yang, Ting-Gui Wang, Gary J. Ferland, Weimin Yuan, Hong-Yan Zhou, Peng Jiang

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present results of follow-up optical spectroscopic Multi-Mirror Telescope (MMT) observations of seven rare, extreme coronal line-emitting galaxies reported by Wang et al. Large variations in coronal lines are found in four objects, making them strong candidates for tidal disruption events (TDEs). For the four TDE candidates, all the coronal lines with ionization states higher than [Fe VII] disappear within 5-9 yr. The [Fe VII] line faded by a factor of about five in one object (J0952+2143) within 4 yr, whereas the line emerged in another two objects that previously did not show the line. A strong increment in the …

We report the results of a full-Stokes survey of all four 18 cm OH lines in 77 OH megamasers (OHMs) using the Arecibo Observatory. This is the first survey of OHMs that included observations of the OH satellite lines; only four of the 77 OHMs have existing satellite line observations in the literature. Satellite line emission is detected in five sources, three of which are redetections of previously published sources. The two sources with new detections of satellite line emission are IRAS F10173+0829, which was detected at 1720 MHz, and IRAS F15107+0724, for which both the 1612 MHz and 1720 …

One of the key challenges facing the realization of functional nanocrystal devices concerns the development of techniques for depositing colloidal nanocrystals into electrically coupled nanoparticle solids. This work compares several alternative strategies for the assembly of such films using an all-optical approach to the characterization of electron transport phenomena. By measuring excited carrier lifetimes in either ligand-linked or matrix-encapsulated PbS nanocrystal films containing a tunable fraction of insulating ZnS domains, we uniquely distinguish the dynamics of charge scattering on defects from other processes of exciton dissociation. The measured times are subsequently used to estimate the diffusion length and the carrier …

In this paper we present a detailed study of the structures and morphologies of a sample of 1188 massive galaxies with M* ≥ 1010 M⊙between redshifts z = 1 and 3 within the Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) region of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) field. Using this sample we determine how galaxy structure and morphology evolve with time, and investigate the nature of galaxy structure at high redshift. We visually classify our sample into discs, ellipticals and peculiar systems and correct for redshift effects on these classifications through simulations. We find significant …

Interstellar H2O Masers From J Shocks, David Hollenbach, Moshe Elitzur, Christopher F. Mckee

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a model in which the 22 GHz H2O masers observed in star-forming regions occur behind shocks propagating in dense regions (preshock density n 0 ~ 106-108 cm–3). We focus on high-velocity (vs ≳ 30 km s–1) dissociative J shocks in which the heat of H2 re-formation maintains a large column of ~300-400 K gas; at these temperatures the chemistry drives a considerable fraction of the oxygen not in CO to form H2O. The H2O column densities, the hydrogen densities, and the warm …

Recent independent results from numerical simulations and observations have shown that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) have increased their stellar mass by a factor of almost 2 between z ∼ 0.9 and z ∼ 0.2. The numerical simulations further suggest that more than half this mass is accreted through major mergers. Using a sample of 18 distant galaxy clusters with over 600 spectroscopically confirmed cluster members between them, we search for observational evidence that major mergers do play a significant role. We find a major merger rate of 0.38 ± 0.14 mergers per Gyr at z ∼ 1. While the uncertainties, …

An optically and geometrically thick torus obscures the central engine of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from some lines of sight. From a magnetohydrodynamical framework, the torus can be considered to be a particular region of clouds surrounding the central engine where the clouds are dusty and optically thick. In this framework, the magnetic field plays an important role in the creation, morphology and evolution of the torus. If the dust grains within the clouds are assumed to be aligned by paramagnetic alignment, then the ratio of the intrinsic polarization and visual extinction, P(per cent)/Av, is a …

We present the results of Chandra and Suzaku X-ray observations of nine moderate-redshift (0.16 < z < 0.42) clusters discovered via the Red-sequence Cluster Survey (RCS). Surface brightness profiles are fitted to β-models, gas masses are determined, integrated spectra are extracted within R2500, and X-ray temperatures and luminosities are inferred. TheLX–TX relationship expected from self-similar evolution is tested by comparing this sample to our previous X-ray investigation of nine high-redshift (0.6 < z < 1.0) optically selected clusters. We find that optically selected clusters are systematically less luminous than X-ray selected clusters of similar X-ray temperature at both moderate and high z. We are unable to constrain evolution in the LX–TX relation with these data, but find it consistent with no evolution, within relatively large uncertainties. To investigate selection effects, we compare the X-ray properties of our sample to those of clusters in the …

We have been able to compare with astrometric precision AstroDrizzle processed images of NGC 6720 (the Ring Nebula) made using two cameras on the Hubble Space Telescope. The time difference of the observations was 12.925 yr. This large time base allowed the determination of tangential velocities of features within this classic planetary nebula. Individual features were measured in [N II] images as were the dark knots seen in silhouette against background nebular [O III] emission. An image magnification and matching technique was also used to test the accuracy of the usual assumption of homologous expansion. We found that homologous …
