Fundamental Plane Distances To Early-Type Field Galaxies In The South Equatorial Strip. I. The Spectroscopic Data, K. R. Müller, G. Wegner, S. Raychaudhury, W. Freudling

Dartmouth Scholarship

Radial velocities and central velocity dispersions are derived for 238 E/S0 galaxies from medium-resolution spectroscopy. New spectroscopic data have been obtained as part of a study of the Fundamental Plane distances and peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in three selected directions of the South Equatorial Strip, undertaken in order to investigate the reality of large-scale streaming motion; results of this study have been reported in M\"uller $et$ $al.$ (1998). The new APM South Equatorial Strip Catalog (−17.5 < δ < +2.5) was used to select the sample of field galaxies in three directions: (1) 15h10 – 16h10; (2) 20h30 – 21h50; (3) 00h10 – 01h30. The spectra obtained have a median S/N per ̊A of 23, an in- strumental resolution (FWHM) of ∼ 4 ̊A, and the spectro- graph resolution (dispersion) is ∼ 100 km s−1. The Fourier cross-correlation method was used to derive the radial ve- locities and velocity dispersions. The velocity dispersions have been corrected for the size of the aperture and for the galaxy effective radius. Comparisons of the derived radial velocities with data from the literature show that our values are accurate to 40 km s−1. A comparison with results from Jørgensen et al. (1995) shows that the derived central velocity dispersion have an rms scatter of 0.036 in log σ. There is no offset relative to the velocity dispersions of Davies et al. (1987).

Peculiar Velocities Of Nonlinear Structure: Voids In Mcvittie Spacetime, Sakai, Nobuyuki, Haines, Paul Dec 1999

Peculiar Velocities Of Nonlinear Structure: Voids In Mcvittie Spacetime, Sakai, Nobuyuki, Haines, Paul

Dartmouth Scholarship

As a study of peculiar velocities of nonlinear structure, we analyze the model of a relativistic thin-shell void in the expanding universe. (1) Adopting McVittie (MV) spacetime as a background universe, we investigate the dynamics of an uncompensated void with negative MV mass. Although the motion itself is quite different from that of a compensated void, as shown by Haines & Harris (1993), the present peculiar velocities are not affected by MV mass. (2) We discuss how precisely the formula in the linear perturbation theory applies to nonlinear relativistic voids, using the results in (1) as well as the previous …

The Pulsation Properties Of Procyon A, Brian Chaboyer, P. Demarque, D. B. Guenther Nov 1999

The Pulsation Properties Of Procyon A, Brian Chaboyer, P. Demarque, D. B. Guenther

Dartmouth Scholarship

A grid of stellar evolution models for Procyon A has been calculated. These models include the best physics available to us (including the latest opacities and equation of state) and are based on the revised astrometric mass of Girard et al. Models were calculated with helium diffusion and with the combined effects of helium and heavy-element diffusion. Oscillation frequencies for l = 0, 1, 2, and 3 p-modes and the characteristic period spacing for the g-modes were calculated for these models. We find that g-modes are sensitive to model parameters that effect the structure of the core, …

Stellar Masses, Kinematics, And White Dwarf Composition For Three Close Da+Dme Binaries, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Elisha F. Polomski Sep 1999

Stellar Masses, Kinematics, And White Dwarf Composition For Three Close Da+Dme Binaries, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Elisha F. Polomski

Dartmouth Scholarship

We determine the mass functions and mass ratios for three close white dwarf plus red dwarf binaries (EUVE J0720-317, 1016-053, and 2013+400). Hubble Space Telescope Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph spectra of the He II λ1640 and C IV λ1550 spectral lines trace the white dwarf orbital motion, and Hamilton Spectrograph echelle spectra (Lick Observatory) and lower dispersion spectra trace the red dwarf orbital motion. The data sets allow us to measure orbital periods and velocities, as well as the white dwarf gravitational redshifts. The red dwarf and white dwarf mass estimates obtained from a combination of independent mass measurements for the …

Large‐Scale Power Spectrum And Cosmological Parameters From Sfi Peculiar Velocities, Wolfram Freudling, Idit Zehavi, Luiz N. Da Costa, Avishai Dekel, Amiram Eldar, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner, Saleem Zaroubi Sep 1999

Large‐Scale Power Spectrum And Cosmological Parameters From Sfi Peculiar Velocities, Wolfram Freudling, Idit Zehavi, Luiz N. Da Costa, Avishai Dekel, Amiram Eldar, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner, Saleem Zaroubi

Dartmouth Scholarship

We estimate the power spectrum of mass density fluctuations from peculiar velocities of galaxies by applying an improved maximum likelihood technique to the new all-sky SFI catalog. Parametric models are used for the power spectrum and the errors, and the free parameters are determined by assuming Gaussian velocity fields and errors and maximizing the probability of the data given the model. It has been applied to generalized cold dark matter (CDM) models with and without COBE normalization. The method has been carefully tested using artificial SFI catalogs. The most likely distance errors are found to be similar to the original …

A First Principles Warm Inflation Model That Solves The Cosmological Horizon And Flatness Problems, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos Jul 1999

A First Principles Warm Inflation Model That Solves The Cosmological Horizon And Flatness Problems, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

A quantum field theory warm inflation model is presented that solves the horizon and flatness problems. The model obtains, from the elementary dynamics of particle physics, cosmological scale factor trajectories that begin in a radiation dominated regime, enter an inflationary regime, and then smoothly exit back into a radiation dominated regime, with non-negligible radiation throughout the evolution.

An Ultraviolet Fe Ii Image Of Sn 1885 In M31, Andrew Js Hamilton, Robert A. Fesen Jul 1999

An Ultraviolet Fe Ii Image Of Sn 1885 In M31, Andrew Js Hamilton, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ultraviolet imaging of the remnant of Supernova 1885 in M31 with the Hubble Space Telescope using the F255W filter on the WFPC2 reveals a dark spot of Fe II absorption at the remnant’s known position′′ ′′in the bulge of M31. The diameter of the absorbing spot is 0. 55 ± 0. 15, slightly smaller than, but′′ ′′consistent with, the 0. 70 ± 0. 05 diameter measured in the higher quality WFPC2 Ca II absorption image previously reported by us. The measured ratio of flux inside to outside SNR 1885 in the Fe IIimage is 0.24 ± 0.17, consistent with the …

The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Rregions — Ii. The Spectroscopic Data, Gary Wegner, Matthew Colless, R. P. Saglia, Robert K. Mcmahan

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the spectroscopic data for the galaxies studied in the EFAR project, which is designed to measure the properties and peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in two distant regions. We have obtained 1319 spectra of 714 early-type galaxies over 33 observing runs on 10 different telescopes. We describe the observations and data reductions used to measure redshifts, velocity dispersions and the Mgb and Mg2 Lick linestrength indices. Detailed simulations and intercomparison of the large number of repeat observations lead to reliable error estimates for all quantities. The measurements from different observing runs are calibrated to a common …

The I-Band Tully-Fisher Relation For Sc Galaxies: 21 Centimeter H I Line Data, Martha P. Haynes, Riccardo Giovanelli, Pierre Chamaraux, Luiz N. Da Costa, Wolfram Freudling, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner May 1999

The I-Band Tully-Fisher Relation For Sc Galaxies: 21 Centimeter H I Line Data, Martha P. Haynes, Riccardo Giovanelli, Pierre Chamaraux, Luiz N. Da Costa, Wolfram Freudling, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

A compilation of 21 cm line spectral parameters specifically designed for application of the Tully-Fisher (TF) distance method is presented for 1201 spiral galaxies, primarily field Sc galaxies, for which optical I-band photometric imaging is also available. New H I line spectra have been obtained for 881 galaxies. For an additional 320 galaxies, spectra available in a digital archive have been reexamined to allow application of a single algorithm for the derivation of the TF velocity width parameter. A velocity width algorithm is used that provides a robust measurement of rotational velocity and permits an estimate of the error …

The I-Band Tully-Fisher Relation For Sc Galaxies: Optical Imaging Data, Martha P. Haynes, Riccardo Giovanelli, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner Apr 1999

The I-Band Tully-Fisher Relation For Sc Galaxies: Optical Imaging Data, Martha P. Haynes, Riccardo Giovanelli, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Properties derived from the analysis of photometric I-band imaging observations are presented for 1727 inclined spiral galaxies, mostly of types Sbc and Sc. The reduction, parameter extraction, and error estimation procedures are discussed in detail. The asymptotic behavior of the magnitude curve of growth and the radial variation in ellipticity and position angle are used in combination with the linearity of the surface brightness falloff to fit the disk portion of the profile. Total I-band magnitudes are calculated by extrapolating the detected surface brightness profile to a radius of eight disk scale lengths. Errors in the magnitudes, typically …

The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Regions -- V. The Mg-- Relation, Age And Metallicity, M. Colless, D. Burstein, R. L. Davies, R. K. Mcmahan, R. P. Saglia, G. Wegner Mar 1999

The Peculiar Motions Of Early-Type Galaxies In Two Distant Regions -- V. The Mg-- Relation, Age And Metallicity, M. Colless, D. Burstein, R. L. Davies, R. K. Mcmahan, R. P. Saglia, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have examined the Mg—σ relation for early-type galaxies in the EFAR sample and its dependence on cluster properties. A comprehensive maximum likelihood treatment of the sample selection and measurement errors gives fits to the global Mg—σ relation of Mg b′=0.131 log σ −0.131 and Mg2=0.257 log σ −0.305. The slope of these relations is 25 per cent steeper than that obtained by most other authors owing to the reduced bias of our fitting method. The intrinsic scatter in the global Mg— σ relation is estimated to be 0.016 mag in Mg b′ and 0.023 …

The Post–Common Envelope And Pre–Cataclysmic Binary Pg 1224+309, Jerome A. Orosz, Richard A. Wade, Jason J. B. Harlow, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor, Michael Eracleous Mar 1999

The Post–Common Envelope And Pre–Cataclysmic Binary Pg 1224+309, Jerome A. Orosz, Richard A. Wade, Jason J. B. Harlow, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor, Michael Eracleous

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have made extensive spectroscopic and photometric observations of PG 1224+309, a close binary containing a DA white dwarf primary and an M4+ secondary. The Hα line is in emission due to irradiation of the M star by the hot white dwarf and is seen to vary around the orbit. From the radial velocities of the Hα line we derive a period of P = 0.258689 ± 0.000004 days and a semiamplitude of KHα = 160 ± 8 km s-1. We estimate a correction ΔK = 21 ± 2 km s-1, where KM …

Stellar Kinematics Of The Double Nucleus Of M31, Thomas S. Statler, Ivan R. King, Philippe Crane, Robert I. Jedrzejewski Feb 1999

Stellar Kinematics Of The Double Nucleus Of M31, Thomas S. Statler, Ivan R. King, Philippe Crane, Robert I. Jedrzejewski

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report observations of the double nucleus of M31 with the f/48 long-slit spectrograph of the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Camera. We obtain a total exposure of 19,000 s over seven orbits, with the 0063-wide slit along the line between the two brightness peaks (P.A. 42°). Careful correction of the raw data for detector backgrounds and geometric distortion is essential. A spectrum of Jupiter obtained with the same instrument is used as a spectral template to extract rotation and velocity dispersion profiles by cross-correlation. The rotation curve is resolved and reaches a maximum amplitude of ~250 km s-1 roughly …

The Steep Spectrum Quasar Pg1404+ 226 With Asca, Hst And Rosat, Marie-Helene Ulrich, Andrea Comastri, Stefanie Komossa, Phil Crane

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present and discuss our observations of the Narrow Line quasar PG1404+226 (zem = 0.098) with ASCA and HST, and a re-analysis of our earlier observa- tions with ROSAT. The soft X-ray spectrum is very steep and displays an absorption feature (edge or line at ∼ 1.1 keV). We have applied a variety of models to the ASCA and ROSAT spectra without finding a completely satis- factory fit, and the identification of the edge remains un- certain. A satisfactory fit of the ASCA spectrum assuming that the edge is produced by highly ionized iron (using the code absori in XSPEC) …

A low-dispersion Keck I spectrum of SN 1980K taken in 1995 August (t = 14.8 yr after explosion) and a spectrum taken in 1997 November (t = 17.0 yr) at the MDM Observatory show broad 5500 km s-1 emission lines of Hα, [O I] 6300, 6364 Å, and [O II] 7319, 7330 Å. Weaker but similarly broad lines detected include [Fe II] 7155 Å, [S II] 4068, 4072 Å, and a blend of [Fe II] lines at 5050–5400 Å. The presence of strong [S II] 4068, 4072 Å emission but a lack of [S II] 6716, 6731 …

Gravitational Waves From Collapsing Vacuum Domains, Marcelo Gleiser, Ronald Roberts Dec 1998

Gravitational Waves From Collapsing Vacuum Domains, Marcelo Gleiser, Ronald Roberts

Dartmouth Scholarship

The breaking of an approximate discrete symmetry, the final stages of a first order phase transition, or a postinflationary biased probability distribution for scalar fields are possible cosmological scenarios characterized by the presence of unstable domain wall networks. Combining analytical and numerical techniques, we show that the nonspherical collapse of these domains can be a powerful source of gravitational waves. We compute their contribution to the stochastic background of gravitational radiation and explore their observability by present and future gravitational wave detectors.

The Motions Of Clusters Of Galaxies And The Dipoles Of The Peculiar Velocity Field, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner Dec 1998

The Motions Of Clusters Of Galaxies And The Dipoles Of The Peculiar Velocity Field, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

In preceding papers of this series, TF relations for galaxies in 24 clusters with radial velocities between 1000 and 9200 km s-1 (SCI sample) were obtained, a Tully-Fisher (TF) template relation was constructed, and mean offsets of each cluster with respect to the template were obtained. Here, an estimate of the line-of-sight peculiar velocities of the clusters and their associated errors are given. It is found that cluster peculiar velocities in the cosmic microwave background reference frame do not exceed 600 km s-1 and that their distribution has a line-of-sight dispersion of 300 km s-1, suggesting …

Cluster Versus Field Elliptical Galaxies And Clues On Their Formation, Mariangela Bernardi, Alvio Renzini, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner Dec 1998

Cluster Versus Field Elliptical Galaxies And Clues On Their Formation, Mariangela Bernardi, Alvio Renzini, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Using new observations for a sample of 931 early-type galaxies, we investigate whether the Mg2-σ0 relation shows any dependence on the local environment. The galaxies have been assigned to three different environments depending on the local overdensity (clusters, groups, and field); we used our complete redshift database to guide the assignment of galaxies. It is found that cluster, group, and field early-type galaxies follow almost identical Mg2-σ0 relations, with the largest Mg2 zero-point difference (clusters minus field) being only 0.007±0.002 mag. No correlation of the residuals is found with the morphological type or …

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos Nov 1998

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study the conditions under which an overdamped regime can be attained in the dynamic evolution of a quantum field configuration. Using a real-time formulation of finite temperature field theory, we compute the effective evolution equation of a scalar field configuration, quadratically interacting with a given set of other scalar fields. We then show that, in the overdamped regime, the dissipative kernel in the field equation of motion is closely related to the shear viscosity coefficient, as computed in scalar field theory at finite temperature. The effective dynamics is equivalent to a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau description of the approach to equilibrium …

Flows On Scales Of 150 Mpc?, K. R. Müller, W. Freudling, R. Watkins, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

In order to investigate the reality of large-scale streaming motion on scales of up to 150 Mpc, we have studied the peculiar motions of ~200 early-type galaxies in three directions of the South Equatorial Strip at distances out to ~20,000 km s-1. The new Automatic Plate Measuring Facility South Equatorial Strip Catalog (-175<δ<+25) was used to select the sample of field galaxies in three directions: (1) 15h10m-16h10m; (2) 20h30m-21h50m; (3) 00h10m-01h30m. New R-band CCD photometry and spectroscopic data for the galaxies are used. The fundamental plane distance-indicator …

A Photometric And Kinematic Study Of Awm 7, Daniel M. Koranyi, Margaret Geller, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary Wegner Nov 1998

A Photometric And Kinematic Study Of Awm 7, Daniel M. Koranyi, Margaret Geller, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have measured redshifts and Kron-Cousins R-band magnitudes for a sample of galaxies in the poor cluster AWM 7. We have measured redshifts for 172 galaxies; 106 of these are cluster members. We determine the luminosity function (LF) from a photometric survey of the central 1.2 × 1.2 h-1 Mpc. The LF has a bump at the bright end and a faint-end slope of α = -1.37 ± 0.16, populated almost exclusively by absorption-line galaxies. The cluster velocity dispersion is lower in the core (~530 km s-1) than at the outskirts (~680 km s-1), …

Peculiar Velocity Dipoles Of Field Galaxies, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Wolfram Freudling, Luiz N. Da Costa, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner Oct 1998

Peculiar Velocity Dipoles Of Field Galaxies, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Wolfram Freudling, Luiz N. Da Costa, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Tully-Fisher (TF) relation is applied to obtain peculiar velocities of field spiral galaxies and to calculate dipoles of the peculiar velocity field to cz8000 km s-1. The field galaxy sample is spatially coextensive with and completely independent of a cluster sample, for which dipole characteristics are given in a separate paper. Dipoles of the peculiar velocity field are obtained separately by applying (1) an inverse version of the TF relation and selecting galaxies by redshift windowing and (2) a direct TF relation, with velocities corrected for the inhomogeneous Malmquist bias and windowing galaxies by TF distance. …

Hubble Space Telescope Images And Spectra Of The Remnant Of Sn 1885 In M31, Robert A. Fesen, Christopher L. Gerardy, Kevin M. Mclin, Andrew J. S. Hamilton Oct 1998

Hubble Space Telescope Images And Spectra Of The Remnant Of Sn 1885 In M31, Robert A. Fesen, Christopher L. Gerardy, Kevin M. Mclin, Andrew J. S. Hamilton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Near-UV Hubble Space Telescope images of the remnant of SN 1885 (S And) in M31 show a 070±005 diameter absorption disk silhouetted against M31's central bulge, at SN 1885's historically reported position. The disk's size corresponds to a linear diameter of 2.5±0.4 pc at a distance of 725±70 kpc, implying an average expansion velocity of 11,000±2000 km s-1 over 110 yr. Low-dispersion Faint Object Spectrograph spectra over 3200-4800 Å reveal that the absorption arises principally from Ca II H and K (equivalent width 215 Å), with weaker absorption features of Ca I 4227 Å and Fe I 3720 Å. The …

Comparison Of The Sfi Peculiar Velocities With The Iras 1.2-Jy Gravity Field, L. N. Da Costa, A. Nusser, W. Freudling, R. Giovanelli, M. P. Haynes, J J. Salzer, G. Wegner Sep 1998

Comparison Of The Sfi Peculiar Velocities With The Iras 1.2-Jy Gravity Field, L. N. Da Costa, A. Nusser, W. Freudling, R. Giovanelli, M. P. Haynes, J J. Salzer, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a comparison between the peculiar velocity fields measured from a recently completed I-band Tully-Fisher survey of field spirals (SFI) and that derived from the IRAS 1.2-Jy redshift survey galaxy distribution. The analysis is based on the expansion of these data in redshift space using smooth orthonormal functions, and is performed using low- and high-resolution expansions, with an effective smoothing scale which increases almost linearly with redshift. The effective smoothing scales at 3000 km s−1 are 1500 and 1000 km s−1 for the low- and high-resolution filters. The agreement between the high- and low-resolution SFI velocity …

Hot White Dwarfs In The Extreme ‐ Ultraviolet Explorer Survey. Iv. Da White Dwarfs With Bright Companions, Stephane Vennes, Damian J. Christian, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an analysis of optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray spectral properties of a sample of 13 hot hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs, each paired with a luminous unresolved companion. Using low-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra, ROSAT photometry, and Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer photometry and spectroscopy, we estimate the effective temperature, mass, and distance of the white dwarfs. Additionally, we examine the question of their atmospheric composition. We establish orbital properties for most binaries by means of high-dispersion optical spectroscopy obtained with the Hamilton echelle spectrograph at Lick Observatory; the same data help uncover evidence of activity in some of the secondary …

A V And I Ccd Mosaic Survey Of The Ursa Minor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy, J. T. Kleyna, M. J. Geller, S. J. Kenyon, M. J. Kurtz, J. R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We discuss a Johnson-Cousins V- and I-band CCD mosaic survey of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) to V ~ 22. We covered UMi with 27 105 × 105 overlapping CCD frames, each frame consisting of two 300 s exposures in each of V and I. We also observed several regions ~3° from UMi to obtain an estimate of contamination by galaxies and Galactic stars. We report the first H-R diagram of an entire dSph. Separation of dwarf stars from foreground stars by color allows a robust estimation of the structural parameters of UMi. We examine …

Aquila X-1: A Low-Inclination Soft X-Ray Transient, T. Shahbaz, J. R. Thorstensen, P. A. Charles, N. D. Sherman

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have obtained I-band photometry of the neutron star X-ray transient Aql X-1 during quiescence. We find a periodicity at 2.487 cycles d−1, which we interpret as twice the orbital frequency (19.30±0.05 h). Folding the data on the orbital period, we model the light-curve variations as the ellipsoidal modulation of the secondary star. We determine the binary inclination to be 20°–30° (90 per cent confidence) and also determine the 95 per cent upper limits to the radial velocity semi-amplitude and rotational broadening of the secondary star to be 117 and 50 km s−1, respectively.

Pg 1002+506: A Be Star Apparently At Z > +10 Kiloparsecs, F. A. Ringwald, W. R. J. Rolleston, R. A. Saffer, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

PG 1002+506 is found to be a Be star, one of three found so far by the Palomar-Green survey. Its spectrum is classified as a B5 ± 1 Ve, with Teff = 14,900 ± 1200, log g = 4.2 ± 0.2, and v sin i = 340 ± 50 km s-1. At b = +51°, its height above the Galactic plane would therefore be z = +10.8 kpc, putting this apparently young, rapidly rotating star well into the Galactic halo. Its heliocentric radial velocity is found to be -2 ± 15 km s-1, consistent with …

Semilocal String Formation In Two Dimensions, Ana Achúcarro, Julian Borrill, Andrew R. Liddle Mar 1998

Semilocal String Formation In Two Dimensions, Ana Achúcarro, Julian Borrill, Andrew R. Liddle

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a toy model for the investigation of the formation of semilocal strings, where a planar symmetry is employed to reduce the system to two dimensions. We approximate the symmetry breaking using an extension of the Vachaspati-Vilenkin algorithm, where we throw down random phases for the scalar fields and then find the gauge field configuration which minimizes gradient energy in this fixed scalar background. We show this procedure reproduces the standard estimate for the formation rate of cosmic strings. For semilocal strings the configurations generated by this method are ambiguous, and we numerically evolve the configurations forward in time …

How To Count Kinks. From The Continuum To The Lattice And Back, Marcelo Gleiser, Hans-Reinhard Muller

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the matching between (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear field theories coupled to an external stochastic environment and their lattice simulations. In particular, we focus on how to obtain numerical results which are lattice-spacing independent, and on how to extract the correct effective potential which emerges from the simulations. As an application, we study the thermal production of kink-antikink pairs, obtaining a number density of pairs which is lattice-spacing independent and the
