The Expansion Center And Dynamical Age Of The Galactic Supernova Remnant Cassiopeia A, John R. Thorstensen, Robert A. Fesen, Sidney Van Den Bergh
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present proper motions for 21 bright main shell and 17 faint, higher velocity, outer ejecta knots in the Cas A supernova remnant and use them to derive new estimates for the remnant's expansion center and age. Our study included 1951–1976 Palomar 5 m prime focus plates, 1988–1999 CCD images from the KPNO 4 m and MDM 2.4 m telescopes, and 1999 HST WFPC2 images. Measurable positions covered a 23 to 41 yr time span for most knots, with a few outer knots followed for almost 48 yr. We derive an expansion center of α(J2000) = 23h23m …

Dartmouth Scholarship
The EFAR project is designed to measure the properties and peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in two distant regions. Here we describe the maximum-likelihood algorithm we developed to investigate the correlations between the parameters of the EFAR data base. One-, two- and three-dimensional Gaussian models are constructed to determine the mean value and intrinsic spread of the parameters, and the slopes and intrinsic parallel and orthogonal spread of the Mg2–Mgb′,Mg2–σ,Mgb′–σ relations, and the Fundamental Plane. In the latter case, the cluster peculiar velocities are also determined. We show that this method is superior to …

We present peculiar velocities for 85 clusters of galaxies in two large volumes at distances between 6000 and 15 000 km s−1 in the directions of Hercules-Corona Borealis and Perseus-Pisces-Cetus (the EFAR sample). These velocities are based on Fundamental Plane (FP) distance estimates for early-type galaxies in each cluster. We fit the FP using a maximum likelihood algorithm which accounts for both selection effects and measurement errors, and yields FP parameters with smaller bias and variance than other fitting procedures. We obtain a best-fitting FP with coefficients consistent with the best existing determinations. We measure the bulk motions of …
Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos
Affinity For Scalar Fields To Dissipate, Arjun Berera, Rudnei O. Ramos
Dartmouth Scholarship
The zero-temperature effective equation of motion is derived for a scalar field interacting with other fields. For a broad range of cases, involving interaction with as few as one or two fields, dissipative regimes are found for the scalar field system. The zero-temperature limit constitutes a baseline effect that will be prevalent in any general statistical state. Thus, the results found here provide strong evidence that dissipation is the norm not the exception for an interacting scalar field system. For application to inflationary cosmology, this provides convincing evidence that warm inflation could be a natural dynamics once proper treatment of …

A Search For Previously Unrecognized Metal-Poor Subdwarfs In The Hipparcos Astrometric Catalogue, I. N. Reid, F. Van Wyk, F. Marang, G. Roberts, D. Kilkenny, S. Mahoney
Dartmouth Scholarship
We have identified 317 stars included in the Hipparcos astrometric catalogue that have parallaxes measured to a precision of better than 15 per cent, and the location of which in the (MV,(B−V)T) diagram implies a metallicity comparable to or less than that of the intermediate‐abundance globular cluster M5. We have undertaken an extensive literature search to locate Strömgren, Johnson/Cousins and Walraven photometry for over 120 stars. In addition, we present new UBV(RI)C photometry of 201 of these candidate halo stars, together with similar data for a further 14 known metal‐poor subdwarfs. These …

Hubble Space Telescope Images Of The Ultraluminous Supernova Remnant Complex In Ngc 6946, William P. Blair, Robert A. Fesen, Eric M. Schlegel
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) narrow-passband Hα and [S II] images and broadband continuum images of the region around an extremely luminous optical and X-ray supernova remnant complex in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946. These images, obtained with the PC1 CCD of the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, show a circular, limb-brightened shell of diameter 035 [9 d/(5.1 Mpc) pc] superposed on the edge of a larger, lower surface brightness elliptical shell (14 × 08, or 34 pc × 20 pc). The HST images allow us to see that the [S II] : Hα ratio remains …

An Optical Survey Of Outlying Ejecta In Cassiopeia A: Evidence For A Turbulent, Asymmetric Explosion, Robert A. Fesen
Dartmouth Scholarship
A deep optical survey of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant has revealed dozens of new emissionline ejecta knots out beyond the remnantÏs bright nebular shell. Most of the newly detected knots exhibit a 4500È 7500 A. spectrum dominated by [N II ] jj 6548,6583 line emissions. After accounting for possible decelerations, the estimated space velocities for about four dozen of these [N II ] knots suggest a nearly isotropic ^ 10,000 km s~1 ejection velocity. However, a small group along the southwestern limb show signi‹cantly higher velocities of up to 12,000 km s~1 . Over 20 outlying O] S emission …

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Of The Cassiopeia A And Kepler Supernova Remnants, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Near-infrared spectra (0.95 – 2.4 μm) of the Cassiopeia A and Kepler supernova remnants (SNRs) are presented. Low-dispersion (R ≈ 700) spectra were obtained for five bright fast-moving ejecta knots (FMKs) at two locations on the main shell and for three bright circumstellar knots (QSFs) near the southwest rim of Cas A. The main shell FMKs in Cas A exhibit a sparse near- infrared spectrum dominated by [S II] 1.03 μm emission with a handful of other, fainter emission lines. Among these are two high-ionization silicon lines, [Si VI] 1.96 μm and [Si X] 1.43 μm, which have been detected …

Starbursts Versus Truncated Star Formation In Nearby Clusters Of Galaxies, James A. Rose, Alejandro E. E. Gaba, Nelson Caldwell, Brian Chaboyer
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present long-slit spectroscopy, B - and R -bandpass imaging, and 21 cm observations of a sample of early-type galaxies in nearby clusters, which are known to be either in a star-forming phase or to have had star formation that recently terminated. From the long-slit spectra, obtained with the Blanco 4 m telescope, we ‹nd that emission lines in the star-forming cluster galaxies are signi‹cantly more centrally concentrated than in a sample of ‹eld galaxies. The broadband imaging reveals that two currently starforming early-type galaxies in the Pegasus I cluster have blue nuclei, again indicating that recent star formation has …

The Long-Period Orbit Of The Dwarf Nova V630 Cassiopeiae, J. A. Orosz, J. R. Thorstensen, R. K. Honeycutt
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present extensive spectroscopy and photometry of the dwarf nova V630 Cassiopeiae. A late-type (K4-5) absorption spectrum is easily detectable, from which we derive the orbital parameters. We find a spectroscopic period of P=2.56387 +/- (4 times 10^{-5}) days and a semiamplitude of K_2=132.9 +/- 4.0 km/s. The resulting mass function, which is a firm lower limit on the mass of the white dwarf, is then f(M)=0.624 +/- 0.056 solar masses. The secondary star is a ``stripped giant'', and using relations between the core mass and the luminosity and the core mass and the radius we derive a lower limit …

Comparison Of The Enear Peculiar Velocities With The Pscz Gravity Field, A Nusser, L. N. Da Costa, E Branchini, M. Bernardi, M V. Alonso, G Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present a comparison between the peculiar velocity field measured from the ENEAR all-sky Dn−σ catalogue and that derived from the galaxy distribution of the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey (PSCz). The analysis is based on a modal expansion of these data in redshift space by means of spherical harmonics and Bessel functions. The effective smoothing scale of the expansion is almost linear with redshift reaching 1500kms−1 at 3000kms−1. The general flow patterns in the filtered ENEAR and PSCz velocity fields agree well within 6000kms−1, assuming a linear biasing relation between the mass and …
The Relative Age Of The Thin And Thick Galactic Disks, Wilson M. Liu, Brian Chaboyer
The Relative Age Of The Thin And Thick Galactic Disks, Wilson M. Liu, Brian Chaboyer
Dartmouth Scholarship
We determine the relative ages of the open cluster NGC 188 and selected Hipparcos field stars by isochrone fitting and compare them to the age of the thick-disk globular cluster 47 Tuc. The best-fit age for NGC 188 was determined to be 6.5 ± 1.0 Gyr. The solar-metallicity Hipparcos field stars yielded a slightly older thin-disk age, 7.5 ± 0.7 Gyr. Two slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -0.22) field stars whose kinematic and orbital parameters indicate that they are members of the thin disk were found to have an age of 9.7 ± 0.6 Gyr. The age for 47 Tuc was …

Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph Observations Of The Hot White Dwarf In The Close Binary Feige 24, Stephane Vennes, Elisha F. Polomski, Thierry Lanz, John R. Thorstensen
Dartmouth Scholarship
We obtained and analyzed two Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph spectra of the white dwarf in the DA plus dMe binary Feige 24. The spectra, obtained at orbital quadratures, provide new estimates of the white dwarf motion and gravitational redshift resulting in revised white dwarf parameters. An analysis of interstellar absorption lines reveals the presence of two clouds (+3.1 km s-1, +17.6 km s-1) in the line of sight toward Feige 24; one of these clouds (+17.6 km s-1) is identified with the "local cloud." A study of the Lyα H I and D I interstellar medium lines shows that …

The Infall Region Of Abell 576: Independent Mass And Light Profiles, Kenneth Rines, Margaret J. Geller, Antonaldo Diaferio, Joseph J. Mohr, Gary A. Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
We describe observations of the nearby (cz = 11,487 km s-1) cluster of galaxies Abell 576 beyond the virial radius and into the infall region where galaxies are on their first or second pass through the cluster. Using 1057 redshifts, we use the infall pattern in redshift space to determine the mass profile of A576 to a radius of ~4 h-1 Mpc. This mass estimation technique makes no assumptions about the equilibrium state of the cluster. Within ~1 h-1 Mpc, the mass profile we derive exceeds that determined from X-ray observations by a factor of …

Low-Mass Spectroscopic Binaries In The Hyades: A Candidate Brown Dwarf Companion, I. Neill Reid, S. Mahoney
Dartmouth Scholarship
We have used the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope to obtain high-resolution spectroscopy of 51 late-type M dwarfs in the Hyades cluster. Cross-correlating the calibrated data against spectra of white dwarfs allows us to determine heliocentric velocities with an accuracy of ±0.3 km s−1. 27 stars were observed at two epochs in 1997; two stars, RHy 42 and RHy 403, are confirmed spectroscopic binaries. RHy 42 is a double-lined, equal-mass system; RHy 403 is a single-lined, short-period binary, P∼1.275 d. RHy 403A has an absolute magnitude of MI=10.85, consistent with a mass …

Rosat Hri And Asca Observations Of The Spiral Galaxy Ngc 6946 And Its Northeast Complex Of Luminous Supernova Remnants, Eric M. Schlegel, William P. Blair, Robert A. Fesen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Analysis of 80 ks ASCA and 60 ks ROSAT HRI observations of the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946 are presented. The ASCA image is the first observation of this galaxy above ~2 keV. Diffuse emission may be present in the inner ~4' extending to energies above ~2–3 keV. In the HRI data, 14 pointlike sources are detected, the brightest two being a source very close to the nucleus and a source to the northeast that corresponds to a luminous complex of interacting supernova remnants (SNRs). We detect a point source that lies ~30'' west of the SNR complex but with …

Dartmouth Scholarship
We present a measurement of the cluster X-ray luminosity-temperature (L-T) relation out to high redshift (z∼0.8). Combined ROSAT PSPC spectra of 91 galaxy clusters detected in the Wide Angle ROSAT Pointed Survey (WARPS) are simultaneously fitted in redshift and luminosity bins. The resulting temperature and luminosity measurements of these bins, which occupy a region of the high-redshift L-T relation not previously sampled, are compared with existing measurements at low redshift in order to constrain the evolution of the L-T relation. We find the best fit to low-redshift (z<0.2) cluster data, at T …0.2)>

Orbital Period Of The Low‐Inclination Sw Sextantis Star V442 Ophiuchi, D. W. Hoard, John R. Thorstensen, Paula Szkody
Dartmouth Scholarship
V442 Ophiuchi is a low-inclination (noneclipsing) nova-like cataclysmic variable. We have obtained medium resolution (1-3.5 Å), time-resolved optical spectroscopy of this interacting binary star spanning an interval of 4 yr, from 1995 August to 1999 June. Using an Hα radial velocity curve constructed from our combined spectroscopic data sets, we have determined that Porb = 0.1243 days for V442 Oph, breaking the long-standing 1 day alias ambiguity in its orbital period. V442 Oph shares many of the characteristics of the group of cataclysmic variables known as the SW Sextantis stars. Its Doppler tomograms and orbital phase-dependent emission-line behavior, including …

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies: Dipole Of The Velocity Field, L. N. Da Costa, M. Bernardi, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
We use the recently completed redshift-distance survey of nearby early-type galaxies (ENEAR) to measure the dipole component of the peculiar velocity field to a depth of cz ~ 6000 km s-1. The sample consists of 1145 galaxies brighter than mB = 14.5 and with cz ≤ 7000 km s-1, uniformly distributed over the whole sky, and 129 fainter cluster galaxies within the same volume. Most of the Dn-σ distances were obtained from new spectroscopic and photometric observations conducted by this project, ensuring the homogeneity of the data over the whole sky. These 1274 galaxies are objectively assigned …

Redshift-Distance Survey Of Early-Type Galaxies. I. Sample Selection, Properties, And Completeness, L. N. Da Costa, M. Bernardi, M. V. Alonso, G. Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
This is the first in a series of papers describing the recently completed all-sky redshift-distance survey of Early-type NEARby galaxies (ENEAR) carried out for peculiar velocity analysis. The sample is divided into two parts and consists of 1607 elliptical and lenticular galaxies with cz ≤ 7000 km s-1 and with blue magnitudes brighter than mB = 14.5 (ENEARm) and of galaxies in clusters (ENEARc). Galaxy distances based on the Dn-σ and fundamental plane (FP) relations are now available for 1359 and 1107 ENEARm galaxies, respectively, with roughly 80% based on new data gathered by …

Enear Redshift-Distance Survey: Cosmological Constraints, Stefano Borgani, Mariangela Bernardi, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present an analysis of the ENEAR sample of peculiar velocities of field and cluster elliptical galaxies, obtained with Dn-σ distances. We use the velocity correlation function ψ1(r) to analyze the statistics of the field object's velocities, while the analysis of the cluster data is based on the estimate of their rms peculiar velocity Vrms. The results are compared with predictions from cosmological models using linear theory. The statistics of the model velocity field is parameterized by the amplitude η8 = σ8Ω and by the shape parameter Γ of the cold dark matter-like power spectrum. …

The optical light curve of the energetic γ-ray burst GRB 991216 is consistent with jetlike behavior in which a power-law decay steepens from t-1.22+-0.04 at early times to t-1.53 +- 0.05 in a gradual transition at around 2 days. The derivation of the late-time decay slope takes into account the constant contribution of a host or intervening galaxy, which was measured 110 days after the event at R = 24.56 +- 0.14, although the light curve deviates from a single power law whether or not a constant term is included. The early-time spectral energy distribution of the afterglow …

SN 1997ef has been recognized as a peculiar supernova from its light curve and spectral properties. The object was classified as a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) because its spectra were dominated by broad absorption lines of oxygen and iron, lacking any clear signs of hydrogen or helium line features. The light curve is very different from that of previously known SNe Ic, showing a very broad peak and a slow tail. The strikingly broad line features in the spectra of SN 1997ef, which were also seen in the hypernova SN 1998bw, suggest the interesting possibility that SN 1997ef may …

The Wide Angle ROSAT Pointed Survey team reviews the properties and history of the discovery of Cl J0152.7-1357, an X-ray luminous, rich cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z = 0.833. At LX = 8 × 1044h ergs s-1 (0.5-2.0 keV) Cl J0152.7-1357 is the most X-ray luminous cluster known at redshifts z > 0.55. The high X-ray luminosity of the system suggests that massive clusters may begin to form at redshifts considerably greater than unity. This scenario is supported by the high degree of optical and X-ray substructure in Cl J0152.7-1357, which is similarly complex as that …

Spectroscopy And Orbital Periods Of The Old Novae V533 Herculis, V446 Herculis And X Serpentis, J. R. Thorstensen, C. J. Taylor
Dartmouth Scholarship
We report spectroscopic orbital periods of 0.147 d (= 3.53 h) for V533 Her, 0.207 d (= 4.97 h) for V446 Her and 1.478 d for X Ser. V533 Her (Nova Herculis 1963) shows absorption features in its He i and Balmer lines which appear only in a limited range of orbital phase, suggesting that it is a low-inclination SW Sextantis star. V446 Her is unusual in that it has started normal dwarf nova eruptions after a nova outburst, but we find nothing else unusual about it — in particular, a distance estimate based on its dwarf nova outbursts agrees …

We present long slit spectra for a magnitude limited sample of 35 E and S0 galaxies of the Coma cluster. The high quality of the data allowed us to derive spatially resolved spectra for a substantial sample of Coma galaxies for the first time. From these spectra we obtained rota- tion curves, the velocity dispersion profiles and the H3 and H4 coefficients of the Hermite decomposition of the line of sight velocity distribution. Moreover, we derive the radial line index profiles of Mg, Fe and Hβ line indices out to R ≈ 1re − 3re with high signal-to-noise ratio. We …

We present results of a statistical analysis of the SFI catalog of peculiar velocities, a recently completed survey of spiral field galaxies with I-band Tully-Fisher distances. The velocity field statistic utilized is the velocity correlation function, ψ1(r), originally introduced by Górski et al. The analysis is performed in redshift space so as to circumvent potential ambiguities connected with inhomogeneous Malmquist bias corrections. The results from the SFI sample are compared with linear-theory predictions for a class of cosmological models. We generate a large set of mock samples, extracted from N-body simulations, which are used …

Near-infrared spectra (0.95 – 2.4 μ m) of the peculiar Type IIn supernova 1998S in NGC 3877 from 95 to 355 days after maximum light are presented. K -band data taken at days 95 and 225 show the presence of the first overtone of CO emission near 2.3 μ m, which is gone by day 355. An apparent extended blue wing on the CO profile in the day 95 spectrum could indicate a large CO expansion velocity (≈ 2000 – 3000 km s − 1). This is the third detection of infrared CO emission in nearly as many Type II …
