Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper we obtain sufficient conditions for the asymptotic properties of solutions of two dimensional neutral difference systems. Our result extends some existing results in the literature. An example is given to illustrate the result.
A New Approach To The Numerical Solution Of Fractional Order Optimal Control Problems, T. Akbarian, M. Keyanpour
A New Approach To The Numerical Solution Of Fractional Order Optimal Control Problems, T. Akbarian, M. Keyanpour
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article, a new numerical method is proposed for solving a class of fractional order optimal control problems. The fractional derivative is considered in the Caputo sense. This approach is based on a combination of the perturbation homotopy and parameterization methods. The control function u(t) is approximated by polynomial functions with unknown coefficients. This method converts the fractional order optimal control problem to an optimization problem. Numerical results are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the method.

Some New Sequence Spaces, Kuldip Raj, Sunil K. Sharma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In the present paper we introduce some new sequence spaces defined by a Musielak-Orlicz function on semi normed spaces. We make an effort to study some topological properties and inclusion relations between these spaces. The study of sequence spaces over n -normed spaces has also been initiated in this paper.
Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation, Ben C. Nolting
Random Search Models Of Foraging Behavior: Theory, Simulation, And Observation, Ben C. Nolting
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Many organisms, from bacteria to primates, use stochastic movement patterns to find food. These movement patterns, known as search strategies, have recently be- come a focus of ecologists interested in identifying universal properties of optimal foraging behavior. In this dissertation, I describe three contributions to this field. First, I propose a way to extend Charnov's Marginal Value Theorem to the spatially explicit framework of stochastic search strategies. Next, I describe simulations that compare the efficiencies of sensory and memory-based composite search strategies, which involve switching between different behavioral modes. Finally, I explain a new behavioral analysis protocol for identifying the …

Some Geometric Properties Of A New Type Metric Space, Muhammed Çınar, Murat Karakaş, Mikail Et
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we define a metric on our new space and then show that this linear metric space is k-nearly uniform convex and has property beta where p = pk is a bounded sequence of positive real numbers. Finally, we give a result about property (H) by using k-nearly uniform convexity.
Leslie Matrices For Logistic Population Modeling, Bruce Kessler
Leslie Matrices For Logistic Population Modeling, Bruce Kessler
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Leslie matrices are taught as a method of modeling populations in a discrete-time fashion with more detail in the tracking of age groups within the population. Leslie matrices have limited use in the actual modeling of populations, since when the age groups are summed, it is basically equivalent to discrete-time modeling assuming exponential population growth. The logistic model of population growth is more realistic, since it takes into account a carrying capacity for the environment of the population. This talk will describe an adjustment to the Leslie matrix approach for population modeling that is both takes into account the carrying …
Modeling And Control Of Nanoparticle Bloodstream Concentration For Cancer Therapies, Scarlett S. Bracey
Modeling And Control Of Nanoparticle Bloodstream Concentration For Cancer Therapies, Scarlett S. Bracey
Doctoral Dissertations
Currently, the most commonly used treatments for cancerous tumors (chemotherapy, radiation, etc.) have almost no method of monitoring the administration of the treatment for adverse effects in real time. Without any real time feedback or control, treatment becomes a "guess and check" method with no way of predicting the effects of the drugs based on the actual bioavailability to the patient's body. One particular drug may be effective for one patient, yet provide no benefit to another. Doctors and scientists do not routinely attempt to quantifiably explain this discrepancy. In this work, mathematical modeling and analysis techniques are joined together …

On The Performance Of A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm In Dynamic Environments, Quan Yuan, Zhixin Yang
On The Performance Of A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm In Dynamic Environments, Quan Yuan, Zhixin Yang
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
The ability to track the optimum of dynamic environments is important in many practical applications. In this paper, the capability of a hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) to track the optimum in some dynamic environments is investigated for different functional dimensions, update frequencies, and displacement strengths in different types of dynamic environments. Experimental results are reported by using the HGA and some other existing evolutionary algorithms in the literature. The results show that the HGA has better capability to track the dynamic optimum than some other existing algorithms.
Characterization Of The Drilling Via The Vibration Augmenter Of Rotary-Drills And Sound Signal Processing Of Impacted Pipe As A Potential Water Height Assessment Tool, Nicholas Morris
STAR Program Research Presentations
The focus of the internship has been on two topics: a) Characterize the drilling performance of a novel percussive augmenter – this drill was developed by the JPL’s Advanced Technologies Group and its performance was characterized; and b) Examine the feasibility of striking a pipe as a means of assessing the water height inside the pipe. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the possibility of using a simple method of applying impacts to a pipe wall and determining the water height from the sonic characteristic differences including damping, resonance frequencies, etc. Due to multiple variables that are relevant …

Packings And Coverings Of Complete Graphs With A Hole With The 4-Cycle With A Pendant Edge, Yan Xia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we consider packings and coverings of various complete graphs with the 4-cycle with a pendant edge. We consider both restricted and unrestricted coverings. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for such structures for (1) complete graphs Kv, (2) complete bipartite graphs Km,n, and (3) complete graphs with a hole K(v,w).
Juxtaposing Nasa’S Aeronet Aod With Carb Pm Data Over The San Joaquin Valley To Facilitate Multi-Angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (Misr) Pm Pollution Research, John Kanemoto
STAR Program Research Presentations
Airborne particulate matter (PM) has been shown to increase the risk for asthma, chronic bronchitis, cardiopulmonary complications, and respiratory cell membrane damage/infection/leakage. PM levels are currently analyzed from two perspectives: stationary land-based monitoring (LBM) sites and total Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) atmospheric column measurements. Both perspectives often leave miles of space between measuring locations and will have a continually increasing cost from introducing/maintaining sites. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) satellite team hopes to begin investigating/archiving PM levels comprehensively via inputting MISR AOD measurements into a function/model which predicts the amount of ground level PM.
In the future, multivariable spatial correlations …
Stochastic Dea With A Perfect Object And Its Application To Analysis Of Environmental Efficiency, Alexander Vaninsky
Stochastic Dea With A Perfect Object And Its Application To Analysis Of Environmental Efficiency, Alexander Vaninsky
Publications and Research
The paper introduces stochastic DEA with a Perfect Object (SDEA PO). The Perfect Object (PO) is a virtual Decision Making Unit (DMU) that has the smallest inputs and greatest outputs. Including the PO in a collection of actual objects yields an explicit formula of the efficiency index. Given the distributions of DEA inputs and outputs, this formula allows us to derive the probability distribution of the efficiency score, to find its mathematical expectation, and to deliver common (group–related) and partial (object-related) efficiency components. We apply this approach to a prospective analysis of environmental efficiency of the major national and regional …
A Mathematical Model And Numerical Method For Thermoelectric Dna Sequencing, Liwei Shi
A Mathematical Model And Numerical Method For Thermoelectric Dna Sequencing, Liwei Shi
Doctoral Dissertations
DNA sequencing is the process of determining the precise order of nucleotide bases, adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine within a DNA molecule. It includes any method or technology that is used to determine the order of the four bases in a strand of DNA. The advent of rapid DNA sequencing methods has greatly accelerated biological and medical research and discovery. Thermoelectric DNA sequencing is a novel method to sequence DNA by measuring the heat that is released when DNA polymerase inserts a deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate into a growing DNA strand. The thermoelectric device for this project is composed of four parts: …
Generalized Finite-Difference Time-Domain Schemes For Solving Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Frederick Ira Moxley Iii
Generalized Finite-Difference Time-Domain Schemes For Solving Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Frederick Ira Moxley Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is one of the most widely applicable equations in physical science, and characterizes nonlinear dispersive waves, optics, water waves, and the dynamics of molecules. The NLSE satisfies many mathematical conservation laws. Moreover, due to the nonlinearity, the NLSE often requires a numerical solution, which also satisfies the conservation laws. Some of the more popular numerical methods for solving the NLSE include the finite difference, finite element, and spectral methods such as the pseudospectral, split-step with Fourier transform, and integrating factor coupled with a Fourier transform. With regard to the finite difference and finite element methods, …
Eradicating Malaria: Improving A Multiple-Timestep Optimization Model Of Malarial Intervention Policy, Taryn M. Ohashi
Eradicating Malaria: Improving A Multiple-Timestep Optimization Model Of Malarial Intervention Policy, Taryn M. Ohashi
Scripps Senior Theses
Malaria is a preventable and treatable blood-borne disease whose complications can be fatal. Although many interventions exist in order to reduce the impacts of malaria, the optimal method of distributing these interventions in a geographical area with limited resources must be determined. This thesis refines a model that uses an integer linear program and a compartmental model of epidemiology called an SIR model of ordinary differential equations. The objective of the model is to find an intervention strategy over multiple time steps and multiple geographic regions that minimizes the number of days people spend infected with malaria. In this paper, …
Structured Matrices And The Algebra Of Displacement Operators, Ryan Takahashi
Structured Matrices And The Algebra Of Displacement Operators, Ryan Takahashi
HMC Senior Theses
Matrix calculations underlie countless problems in science, mathematics, and engineering. When the involved matrices are highly structured, displacement operators can be used to accelerate fundamental operations such as matrix-vector multiplication. In this thesis, we provide an introduction to the theory of displacement operators and study the interplay between displacement and natural matrix constructions involving direct sums, Kronecker products, and blocking. We also investigate the algebraic behavior of displacement operators, developing results about invertibility and kernels.
Near-Optimal Compressed Sensing Guarantees For Anisotropic And Isotropic Total Variation Minimization, Deanna Needell, Rachel Ward
Near-Optimal Compressed Sensing Guarantees For Anisotropic And Isotropic Total Variation Minimization, Deanna Needell, Rachel Ward
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
Consider the problem of reconstructing a multidimensional signal from partial information, as in the setting of compressed sensing. Without any additional assumptions, this problem is ill-posed. However, for signals such as natural images or movies, the minimal total variation estimate consistent with the measurements often produces a good approximation to the underlying signal, even if the number of measurements is far smaller than the ambient dimensionality. Recently, guarantees for two-dimensional images were established. This paper extends these theoretical results to signals of arbitrary dimension and to both the anisotropic and isotropic total variation problems. To be precise, we show that …

This appendix summarises a commissioned specialist report on the spatial and archaeoastronomical features of the enclosure.
Invisibility: A Mathematical Perspective, Austin G. Gomez
Invisibility: A Mathematical Perspective, Austin G. Gomez
CMC Senior Theses
The concept of rendering an object invisible, once considered unfathomable, can now be deemed achievable using artificial metamaterials. The ability for these advanced structures to refract waves in the negative direction has sparked creativity for future applications. Manipulating electromagnetic waves of all frequencies around an object requires precise and unique parameters, which are calculated from various mathemat- ical laws and equations. We explore the possible interpretations of these parameters and how they are implemented towards the construction of a suitable metamaterial. If carried out correctly, the wave will exit the metamaterial exhibiting the same behavior as when it had entered. …
Clustering Methods And Their Applications To Adolescent Healthcare Data, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen
Clustering Methods And Their Applications To Adolescent Healthcare Data, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen
Scripps Senior Theses
Clustering is a mathematical method of data analysis which identifies trends in data by efficiently separating data into a specified number of clusters so is incredibly useful and widely applicable for questions of interrelatedness of data. Two methods of clustering are considered here. K-means clustering defines clusters in relation to the centroid, or center, of a cluster. Spectral clustering establishes connections between all of the data points to be clustered, then eliminates those connections that link dissimilar points. This is represented as an eigenvector problem where the solution is given by the eigenvectors of the Normalized Graph Laplacian. Spectral clustering …
Applications Of Fourier Analysis To Audio Signal Processing: An Investigation Of Chord Detection Algorithms, Nathan Lenssen
Applications Of Fourier Analysis To Audio Signal Processing: An Investigation Of Chord Detection Algorithms, Nathan Lenssen
CMC Senior Theses
The discrete Fourier transform has become an essential tool in the analysis of digital signals. Applications have become widespread since the discovery of the Fast Fourier Transform and the rise of personal computers. The field of digital signal processing is an exciting intersection of mathematics, statistics, and electrical engineering. In this study we aim to gain understanding of the mathematics behind algorithms that can extract chord information from recorded music. We investigate basic music theory, introduce and derive the discrete Fourier transform, and apply Fourier analysis to audio files to extract spectral data.
